Complete active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations with a (14,11) active space and density functional theory calculations followed by Car-Parrinello molecular dynamic simulations are reported for the p-hydroxyphenacyl acetate, diethyl phosphate, and diphenyl phosphate phototrigger compounds. These calculations considered the explicit hydrogen bonding of water molecules to the phototrigger compound and help reveal the role of water in promoting the photodeprotection and subsequent rearrangement reactions for the p-hydroxyphenacyl caged phototrigger compounds experimentally observed in the presence of appreciable amounts of water but not observed in neat nonproton solvents like acetonitrile. The 267 nm excitation of the phototrigger compounds leads to an instantaneous population of the S3(1pipi*) state Franck-Condon region, which is followed by an internal conversion deactivation route to the S1(1npi*) state via a 1pipi*/1npi* vibronic coupling. The shorter lifetime of the S1(1npi*) state (approximately 1 ps) starting from the FC geometry is terminated by a fast intersystem crossing at a 3pipi*/3npi* intersection with a structure of mixed pipi*/npi* excitation in the triplet state. The deprotection reaction is triggered by a proton (or hydrogen atom) transfer assisted by water bridges and emanates from this pipi*/npi* triplet state intersection. With the departure of the leaving group, the reaction evolves into a water-mediated post-deprotection phase where the spin inversion of pQM (X, 3A) leads to a spiroketone in the ground state by a cyclization process that is followed by an attack of water to produce a 1,1'-di-hydroxyl-spiroketone. Finally, the H atom of the hydroxyl in 1,1'-di-hydroxyl-spiroketon transfers back to the p-O atom aided by water molecules to generate the p-hydroxyphenyl-acetic acid final rearrangement product.  相似文献

Photoisomerization and thermal isomerization behaviors of an extensive series of arylazoimidazoles are investigated. Absorption spectra are characterized by a structured pipi* absorption band around 330-400 nm with a tail on the lower energy side extending to 500 nm corresponding to an npi* transition. The trans-to-cis photoisomerization occurs on excitation into these absorption bands. The quantum yields are dependent on the excitation wavelength, as observed for azobenzene derivatives, but are generally larger than those of azobenzene. The thermal cis-to-trans isomerization rates are also generally larger than that of azobenzene and are comparable to those of 4-N,N-dimethylaminoazobenzene and 4-nitroazobenzene. Arylazoimidazoles with no substituent on the imidazole nitrogen are unique in that the quantum yield for the trans-to-cis photoisomerization and the rate of thermal cis-to-trans isomerization are particularly large. It is proposed that the fast thermal isomerization is due to an involvement of self-catalyzed and protic molecule-assisted tautomerization to a hydrazone form.  相似文献

The mechanisms which are responsible for the radiationless deactivation of the npi* and pipi* excited singlet states of thymine have been investigated with multireference ab initio methods (the complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) method and second-order perturbation theory with respect to the CASSCF reference (CASPT2)) as well as with the CC2 (approximated singles and doubles coupled-cluster) method. The vertical excitation energies, the equilibrium geometries of the 1npi*and 1pipi* states, as well as their adiabatic excitation energies have been determined. Three conical intersections of the S1 and S0 energy surfaces have been located. The energy profiles of the excited states and the ground state have been calculated with the CASSCF method along straight-line reaction paths leading from the ground-state equilibrium geometry to the conical intersections. All three conical intersections are characterized by strongly out-of-plane distorted geometries. The lowest-energy conical intersection (CI1) arises from a crossing of the lowest 1pipi* state with the electronic ground state. It is found to be accessible in a barrierless manner from the minimum of the 1pipi* state, providing a direct and fast pathway for the quenching of the population of the lowest optically allowed excited states of thymine. This result explains the complete diffuseness of the absorption spectrum of thymine in supersonic jets. The lowest vibronic levels of the optically nearly dark 1npi* state are predicted to lie below CI1, explaining the experimental observation of a long-lived population of dark excited states in gas-phase thymine.  相似文献

The transcis photoisomerization of azobenzene‐containing materials is key to a number of photomechanical applications, but the actual conversion mechanism in condensed phases is still largely unknown. Herein, we study the ${{\rm{n}}{\rm{,{\rm \pi} ^\ast }}}$ isomerization in a vacuum and in various solvents via a modified molecular dynamics simulation adopting an ab initio torsion–inversion force field in the ground and excited states, while allowing for electronic transitions and a stochastic decay to the fundamental state. We determine the transcis photoisomerization quantum yield and decay times in various solvents (n‐hexane, anisole, toluene, ethanol, and ethylene glycol), and obtain results comparable with experimental ones where available. A profound difference between the isomerization mechanism in vacuum and in solution is found, with the often neglected mixed torsional–inversion pathway being the most important in solvents.  相似文献

Azoheteroarenes are the most recent derivatives targeted to further improve the properties of azo-based photoswitches. Their light-induced mechanism for transcis isomerization is assumed to be very similar to that of the parent azobenzene. As such, they inherited the controversy about the dominant isomerization pathway (rotation vs. inversion) depending on the excited state (nπ* vs. ππ*). Although the controversy seems settled in azobenzene, the extent to which the same conclusions apply to the more structurally diverse family of azoheteroarenes is unclear. Here, by means of non-adiabatic molecular dynamics, the photoisomerization mechanism of three prototypical phenyl-azoheteroarenes with increasing push–pull character is unraveled. The evolution of the rotational and inversion conical intersection energies, the preferred pathway, and the associated kinetics upon both nπ* and ππ* excitations can be linked directly with the push–pull substitution effects. Overall, the working conditions of this family of azo-dyes is clarified and a possibility to exploit push–pull substituents to tune their photoisomerization mechanism is identified, with potential impact on their quantum yield.  相似文献

The phototautomerization mechanism of a model nitro enamine (NEA) chromophore (incorporated in the structure of a highly photolabile pesticide, tetrahydro-2-(nitromethylene)-2H-1,3-thiazine) has been studied using complete active space self-consistent field reaction path computations. The optically accessible 1pipi* excited state of NEA involves separation of charge and correlates diabatically with the ground state of the tautomerized acinitro imine (ANI) form. For optimum photostabilization, the 1pipi* state of NEA should be S1: in this case, the tautomer would be efficiently formed via a diabatic intramolecular proton-transfer pathway passing through an S1/S0 conical intersection, followed by a facile thermal back proton-transfer reaction. However, in NEA itself the lowest excited states correspond to nitro group 1npi* states, and there are additional surface crossings that provide a mechanism for populating the 1npi* manifold. The above results indicate that the high photolability observed for the pesticide [Kleier, D.; Holden, I.; Casida, J. E.; Ruzo, L. O. J. Agric. Food Chem. 1985, 33, 998-1000] has to be ascribed to photochemistry originating on the 1npi* manifold of states, populated indirectly from the 1pipi* state.  相似文献

We investigate the photochemistry and photodissociation dynamics of uracil by two-colour photofragment Doppler spectroscopy and by two-colour slice imaging at excitation wavelengths between 268 and 235 nm. We observe the loss of a hydrogen atom upon excitation into the pipi* state. The angular distribution indicates a statistical process, while the translational energy distribution agrees with a dissociation that takes place on the electronic ground state. The pipi* state most likely deactivates via the lower-lying npi* state. In addition there is evidence for a second pathway: direct decay of the pipi* state to the electronic ground state with subsequent dissociation. Experiments on uracil-1,3-D(2) show that there is no site selectivity in the dissociation process. No evidence was found for the direct dissociation via a pisigma* excited state that seems to be relevant in the photochemistry of adenine and many other heterocyclic molecules. Overall, the photochemistry of uracil is similar to that of thymine.  相似文献

The excited state dynamics of the purine base 9-methyladenine (9Me-Ade) has been investigated by time- and energy-resolved photoelectron imaging spectroscopy and mass-selected ion spectroscopy, in both vacuum and water-cluster environments. The specific probe processes used, namely a careful monitoring of time-resolved photoelectron energy distributions and of photoion fragmentation, together with the excellent temporal resolution achieved, enable us to derive additional information on the nature of the excited states (pipi*, npi*, pisigma*, triplet) involved in the electronic relaxation of adenine. The two-step pathway we propose to account for the double exponential decay observed agrees well with recent theoretical calculations. The near-UV photophysics of 9Me-Ade is dominated by the direct excitation of the pipi* ((1)L(b)) state (lifetime of 100 fs), followed by internal conversion to the npi* state (lifetime in the ps range) via conical intersection. No evidence for the involvement of a pisigma* or a triplet state was found. 9Me-Ade-(H(2)O)(n) clusters have been studied, focusing on the fragmentation of these species after the probe process. A careful analysis of the fragments allowed us to provide evidence for a double exponential decay profile for the hydrates. The very weak second component observed, however, led us to conclude that the photophysics were very different compared with the isolated base, assigned to a competition between (i) a direct one-step decay of the initially excited state (pipi* L(a) and/or L(b), stabilised by hydration) to the ground state and (ii) a modified two-step decay scheme, qualitatively comparable to that occurring in the isolated molecule.  相似文献

The primary photophysical and photochemical processes in the photochemistry of 1-acetoxy-2-methoxyanthraquinone (1a) were studied using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Excitation of 1a at 270 nm results in the population of a set of highly excited singlet states. Internal conversion to the lowest singlet npi* excited state, followed by an intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) process, proceeds with a time constant of 150 +/- 90 fs. The 1npi* excited state undergoes very fast intersystem crossing (ISC, 11 +/- 1 ps) to form the lowest triplet pipi* excited state which contains excess vibrational energy. The vibrational cooling occurs somewhat faster (4 +/- 1 ps) than ISC. The primary photochemical process, migration of acetoxy group, proceeds on the triplet potential energy surface with a time constant of 220 +/- 30 ps. The transient absorption spectra of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states of 1a, as well as the triplet excited state of the product, 9-acetoxy-2-methoxy-1,10-anthraquinone (2a), were detected. The assignments of the transient absorption spectra were supported by time-dependent DFT calculations of the UV-vis spectra of the proposed intermediates. All of the stationary points for acyl group migration on the triplet and ground state singlet potential energy surfaces were localized, and the influence of the acyl group substitution on the rate constants of the photochemical and thermal processes was analyzed.  相似文献

Photo-excited xanthone is known to undergo ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) in the 1 ps time domain. Correspondingly, its fluorescence quantum yield in most solvents is very small ( approximately 10(-4)). Surprisingly, the quantum yield in water is 100 times larger, while ISC is still rapid ( approximately 1 ps), as seen by ultrafast pump probe absorption spectroscopy. Temperature dependent steady state and time resolved fluorescence experiments point to a delayed fluorescence mechanism, where the triplet (3)npi* state primarily accessed by ISC is nearly isoenergetic with the photo-excited (1)pipi* state. The delayed fluorescence of xanthone in water decays with a time constant of 700 ps, apparently by internal conversion between the (3)npi* state and the lowest lying triplet state (3)pipi*.  相似文献

The CASPT2/CASSCF method with the 6-311G basis set and an active space up to (14, 11) was used to explore the ultrafast internal conversion mechanism for excited 9H-adenine. Three minima, two transition states, and seven conical intersections were obtained to build up the two deactivation pathways for the internal conversion mechanism. Special efforts were made to explore the excited-state potential energy surfaces near the Franck-Condon region and determine the various barriers in the processes of deactivation. The barrier required from the 1pipi (1La) state to deactivate nonradiatively is found to be lower than that required from the 1pipi (1Lb) state. On 250 nm excitation, the 1pipi (1La) state is populated, and the transition from 1pipi (1La) to the lowest 1npi state involves very low barriers, which may account for the observed short (<50 fs) lifetime of the 1pipi excited state. The deactivation of the lowest 1npi state is required to overcome a barrier of 3.15 kcal/mol, which should be responsible for the 750 fs lifetime of the npi excited state. On 267 nm excitation, the vibrationally active 1pipi (1Lb) state is populated. Excitation at 277 nm prepares the 1pipi (1Lb) state without much excessive vibrational energy, which may be responsible for the observed >2 ps lifetime.  相似文献

The excited-state dynamics of trans-azobenzene were investigated by femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics. Two near-degenerate pipi* excited states, S2 and S3,4, were identified in a region hitherto associated with only one excited state. These results help to explain contradictory reports about the photoisomerization mechanism and the wavelength dependence of the quantum yield. A new model for the isomerization mechanism is proposed.  相似文献

We have carried out an experimental and computational study on the ground- and excited-state photochemical and photophysical properties of (1-cyclohexenyl)phenyldiazene (CPD), a species formally derived from azobenzene in which one of the phenyl rings is replaced by a 1-cyclohexene substituent. The results show that CPD does substantially behave like azobenzene, but with a higher (approximately 70%) Phi(Z-->E) (npi*) photoisomerization quantum yield, calling for CPD as an effective alternative of azobenzene itself with new functionalization possibilities. By use of state-of-the-art ab initio CASPT2//CASSCF minimum energy path computations, we have identified the most efficient decay and isomerization routes of the absorbing singlet (pipi*), S1 (npi*), T1, and S0 states of CPD. The resulting mechanistic scheme agrees with experimental findings and provides a rationale of the observed photoisomerization quantum yields. Furthermore, this study provides a deep insight on the photophysical and photochemical properties of compounds based on the -N=N- double bond which supplies a general model for the photoreactivity of azobenzene-type compounds in general. This is expected to be a useful guideline for the design of novel photoreactive azo compounds.  相似文献

The DNA base adenine and four monomethylated adenines were studied in solution at room temperature by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Transient absorption at visible probe wavelengths was used to directly observe relaxation of the lowest excited singlet state (S(1) state) populated by a UV pump pulse. In H(2)O, transient absorption signals from adenine decay biexponentially with lifetimes of 0.18 +/- 0.03 ps and 8.8 +/- 1.2 ps. In contrast, signals from monomethylated adenines decay monoexponentially. The S(1) lifetimes of 1-, 3-, and 9-methyladenine are similar to one another and are all below 300 fs, while 7-methyladenine has a significantly longer lifetime (tau = 4.23 +/- 0.13 ps). On this basis, the biexponential signal of adenine is assigned to an equilibrium mixture of the 7H- and 9H-amino tautomers. Excited-state absorption (ESA) by 9-methyladenine is 50% stronger than by 7-methyladenine. Assuming that ESA by the corresponding tautomers of adenine is unchanged, we estimate the population of 7H-adenine in H(2)O at room temperature to be 22 +/- 4% (estimated standard deviation). To understand how the environment affects nonradiative decay, we performed the first solvent-dependent study of nucleobase dynamics on the ultrafast time scale. In acetonitrile, both lowest energy tautomers of adenine are present in roughly similar proportions as in water. The lifetimes of the 9-substituted adenines depend somewhat more sensitively on the solvent than those of the 7-substituted adenines. Transient signals for adenine in H(2)O and D(2)O are identical. These solvent effects strongly suggest that excited-state tautomerization is not an important nonradiative decay pathway. Instead, the data are most consistent with electronic energy relaxation due to state crossings between the optically prepared (1)pipi* state and one or more (1)npi* states and the electronic ground state. The pattern of lifetimes measured for the monomethylated adenines suggests a special role for the (1)npi* state associated with the N7 electron lone pair.  相似文献

A realistic dynamics simulation study is reported for the ultrafast radiationless deactivation of 9H-adenine. The simulation follows two different excitations induced by two 80 fs (fwhm) laser pulses that are different in energy: one has a photon energy of 5.0 eV, and the other has a photon energy of 4.8 eV. The simulation shows that the excited molecule decays to the electronic ground state from the (1)pipi* state in both excitations but through two different radiationless pathways: in the 5.0 eV excitation, the decay channel involves the out-of-plane vibration of the amino group, whereas in the 4.8 eV excitation, the decay strongly associates with the deformation of the pyrimidine at the C 2 atom. The lifetime of the (1) npi* state determined in the simulation study is 630 fs for the 5.0 eV excitation and 1120 fs for the 4.8 eV excitation. These are consistent with the experimental values of 750 and 1000 fs. We conclude that the experimentally observed difference in the lifetime of the (1) npi* state at various excitations results from the different radiationless deactivation pathways of the excited molecule to the electronic ground state.  相似文献

Mechanism of phototriggered isomerization of azobenzene and its derivatives is of broad interest. In this paper, the S(0) and S(1) potential energy surfaces of the ethylene-bridged azobenzene (1) that was recently reported to have highly efficient photoisomerization were determined by ab initio electronic structure calculations at different levels and further investigated by a semiclassical dynamics simulation. Unlike azobenzene, the cis isomer of 1 was found to be more stable than the trans isomer, consistent with the experimental observation. The thermal isomerization between cis and trans isomers proceeds via an inversion mechanism with a high barrier. Interestingly, only one minimum-energy conical intersection was determined between the S(0) and S(1) states (CI) for both cis → trans and trans → cis photoisomerization processes and confirmed to act as the S(1) → S(0) decay funnel. The S(1) state lifetime is ~30 fs for the trans isomer, while that for the cis isomer is much longer, due to a redistribution of the initial excitation energies. The S(1) relaxation dynamics investigated here provides a good account for the higher efficiency observed experimentally for the trans → cis photoisomerization than the reverse process. Once the system decays to the S(0) state via CI, formation of the trans product occurs as the downhill motion on the S(0) surface, while formation of the cis isomer needs to overcome small barriers on the pathways of the azo-moiety isomerization and rotation of the phenyl ring. These features support the larger experimental quantum yield for the cis → trans photoisomerization than the trans → cis process.  相似文献

By employing broadband femtosecond Kerr-gated time-resolved fluorescence (KTRF) and transient absorption (TA) techniques, we report the first (to our knowledge) femtosecond combined time- and wavelength-resolved study on an ultraviolet-excited nucleoside and a single-stranded oligonucleotide (namely adenosine (Ado) and single-stranded adenine oligomer (dA)(20)) in aqueous solution. With the advantages of the ultrafast time resolution, the broad spectral and temporal probe window, and a high sensitivity, our KTRF and TA results enable the real time monitoring and spectral characterization of the excited-state relaxation processes of the Ado nucleoside and (dA)(20) oligonucleotide investigated. The temporal evolution of the 267 nm excited Ado KTRF spectra indicates there are two emitting components with lifetimes of approximately 0.13 ps and approximately 0.45 ps associated with the L(a) and L(b) pipi* excited states, respectively. These Ado results reveal no obvious evidence for the involvement of the npi* state along the irradiative internal conversion pathway. A distinct mechanism involving only the two pipi* states has been proposed for the ultrafast Ado deactivation dynamics in aqueous solution. The time dependence of the 267 nm excited (dA)(20) KTRF and TA spectra reveals temporal evolution from an ultrafast "A-like" state (with a approximately 0.39 ps decay time) to a relatively long-lived E(1) "excimer" (approximately 4.3 ps decay time) and an E(2) "excimer-like" (approximately 182 ps decay time) state. The "A-like" state has a spectral character closely resembling the excited state of Ado. Comparison of the spectral evolution between the results for Ado and (dA)(20) provides unequivocal evidence for the local excitation character of the initially photoexcited (dA)(20). The rapid transformation of the locally excited (dA)(20) component into the delocalized E(1) "excimer" state which then further evolves into the E(2) "excimer-like" state indicates that base stacking has a high ability to modify the excited-state deactivation pathway. This modification appears to occur by suppressing the internal conversion pathway of an individually excited base component where the stacking interaction mediates efficient interbase energy transfer and promotes formation of the collective excited states. This feature of the local excitation that is subsequently followed by rapid energy delocalization into nearby bases may occur in many base multimer systems. Our results provide an important new contribution to better understanding DNA photophysics.  相似文献

Radiationless deactivation pathways of excited gas phase nucleobases were investigated using mass-selected femtosecond resolved pump-probe resonant ionization. By comparison between nucleobases and methylated species, in which tautomerism cannot occur, we can access intrinsic mechanisms at a time resolution never reported so far (80 fs). At this time resolution, and using appropriate substitution, real nuclear motion corresponding to active vibrational modes along deactivation coordinates can actually be probed. We provide evidence for the existence of a two-step decay mechanism, following a 267 nm excitation of the nucleobases. The time resolution achieved together with a careful zero time-delay calibration between lasers allow us to show that the first step does correspond to intrinsic dynamics rather than to a laser cross correlation. For adenine and 9-methyladenine a first decay component of about 100 fs has been measured. This first step is radically increased to 200 fs when the amino group hydrogen atoms of adenine are substituted by methyl groups. Our results could be rationalized according to the effect of the highly localized nature of the excitation combined to the presence of efficient deactivation pathway along both pyrimidine ring and amino group out-of-plane vibrational modes. These nuclear motions play a key role in the vibronic coupling between the initially excited pipi* and the dark npi* states. This seems to be the common mechanism that opens up the earlier phase of the internal conversion pathway which then, in consideration of the rather fast relaxation times observed, would probably proceed via conical intersection between the npi* relay state and high vibrational levels of the ground state.  相似文献

By exciting cyclohexene in the gas phase at 200 nm and probing it by nonresonant multiphoton ionization with mass-selective detection of the ion yields, we found four time constants tau(i) (20, 47, 43, 350 fs). Whereas deuteration lengthens tau2 by a factor of 1.4, the other constants do not change. Tau1-tau3 represent traveling times through observation windows on excited surfaces, whereas tau4 reflects a process in the hot ground state. We assign tau1 (20 fs) to departure from the Franck-Condon regions of the Rydberg and pipi* states, which are both populated at 200 nm, and tau2 (47 fs) to traveling along the pipi* surface and suggest that a [1,3]-sigmatropic H shift begins in this state. This rationalizes the deuterium effect on tau2. To explain why this window is followed by a process not subject to a D effect, we postulate that the pipi surface is crossed late (i.e., at low energy) by the zwitterionic state Z and that formation of a carbene (the known photochemical product, cyclopentylcarbene) begins there. The corresponding 1,2-shift of a CC bond is then (within tau4 = 350 fs) largely reversed on the ground-state surface, while a smaller part of the carbene forms products such as methylenecyclopentane within the same time. Carbene formation is probably accompanied by some cis-trans isomerization. The wavelength dependence of carbene formation is attributed to a memory for the initially excited state, based on momentum conservation. The processes are most likely typical of simple olefins. The fragmentation pattern showed that butadiene is not formed until at least 500 ps. The retro-Diels-Alder reaction, known to take place in the ground state, thus only occurs later.  相似文献

An ab initio theoretical study at the CASPT2 level is reported on minimum energy reaction paths, state minima, transition states, reaction barriers, and conical intersections on the potential energy hypersurfaces of two tautomers of adenine: 9H- and 7H-adenine. The obtained results led to a complete interpretation of the photophysics of adenine and derivatives, both under jet-cooled conditions and in solution, within a three-state model. The ultrafast subpicosecond fluorescence decay measured in adenine is attributed to the low-lying conical intersection (gs/pipi* La)(CI), reached from the initially populated 1(pipi* La) state along a path which is found to be barrierless only in 9H-adenine, while for the 7H tautomer the presence of an intermediate plateau corresponding to an NH2-twisted conformation may explain the absence of ultrafast decay in 7-substituted compounds. A secondary picosecond decay is assigned to a path involving switches towards two other states, 1(pipi* Lb) and 1(npi*), ultimately leading to another conical intersection with the ground state, (gs/npi*), with a perpendicular disposition of the amino group. The topology of the hypersurfaces and the state properties explain the absence of secondary decay in 9-substituted adenines in water in terms of the higher position of the 1(npi*) state and also that the 1(pipi* Lb) state of 7H-adenine is responsible for the observed fluorescence in water. A detailed discussion comparing recent experimental and theoretical findings is given. As for other nucleobases, the predominant role of a pipi*-type state in the ultrafast deactivation of adenine is confirmed.  相似文献
