Auditory processing appears to include a series of domain-specific filtering operations that include tuning in the audio-frequency domain, followed by tuning in the temporal modulation domain, and perhaps tuning in the spectral modulation domain. To explore the possibility of tuning in the spectral modulation domain, a masking experiment was designed to measure masking patterns in the spectral modulation domain. Spectral modulation transfer functions (SMTFs) were measured for modulation frequencies from 0.25 to 14 cycles/octave superimposed on noise carriers either one octave (800-1600 Hz, 6400-12,800 Hz) or six octaves wide (200-12,800 Hz). The resulting SMTFs showed maximum sensitivity to modulation between 1 and 3 cycles/octave with reduced sensitivity above and below this region. Masked spectral modulation detection thresholds were measured for masker modulation frequencies of 1, 3, and 5 cycles/octave with a fixed modulation depth of 15 dB. The masking patterns obtained for each masker frequency and carrier band revealed tuning (maximum masking) near the masker frequency, which is consistent with the theory that spectral envelope perception is governed by a series of spectral modulation channels tuned to different spectral modulation frequencies.  相似文献

Psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) were obtained in simultaneous and forward masking for a 20-ms, 1000-Hz signal presented at 10 dB SL. The signal was presented at the beginning of, at the temporal center of, at the end of, or immediately following a 400-ms masker. The first experiment was done in quiet; the second experiment was done in the presence of two bands of noise on either side of 1000 Hz. The results were similar in quiet and in noise. In simultaneous masking, the PTCs were broadest for the signal at masker onset, and generally sharpest for the signal at temporal center; the differences were largest on the high-frequency side. In most cases, there was virtually no difference in Q10 between the forward-masking PTC and the simultaneous-masking PTC with the signal temporally centered, although the high-frequency slope was always steeper in forward masking. These results indicate that, at least for brief signals, frequency selectivity measured with simultaneous-masking PTCs and the degree of sharpening revealed in forward-masking PTCs depend upon the temporal position of the signal within the simultaneous masker.  相似文献

Modulation masking: effects of modulation frequency, depth, and phase   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Modulation thresholds were measured for a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) broadband noise in the presence of a SAM broadband background noise with a modulation depth (mm) of 0.00, 0.25, or 0.50, where the condition mm = 0.00 corresponds to standard (unmasked) modulation detection. The modulation frequency of the masker was 4, 16, or 64 Hz; the modulation frequency of the signal ranged from 2-512 Hz. The greatest amount of modulation masking (masked threshold minus unmasked threshold) typically occurred when the signal frequency was near the masker frequency. The modulation masking patterns (amount of modulation masking versus signal frequency) for the 4-Hz masker were low pass, whereas the patterns for the 16- and 64-Hz maskers were somewhat bandpass (although not strictly so). In general, the greater the modulation depth of the masker, the greater the amount of modulation masking (although this trend was reversed for the 4-Hz masker at high signal frequencies). These modulation-masking data suggest that there are channels in the auditory system which are tuned for the detection of modulation frequency, much like there are channels (critical bands or auditory filters) tuned for the detection of spectral frequency.  相似文献

This study investigated the contributions of suppression and excitation to simultaneous masking for a range of masker frequencies both below and above three different signal frequencies (750, 2000, and 4850 Hz). A two-stage experiment was employed. In stage I, the level of each off-frequency simultaneous masker necessary to mask a signal at 10 or 30 dB sensation level was determined. In stage II, three different forward-masking conditions were tested: (1) an on-frequency condition, in which the signals in stage I were used to mask probes of the same frequency; (2) an off-frequency condition, in which the off-frequency maskers (at the levels determined in stage I) were used to mask the probes; and (3) a combined condition, in which the on- and off-frequency maskers were combined to mask the probes. If the off-frequency maskers simultaneously masked the signal via spread of excitation in stage I, then the off-frequency and combined maskers should produce considerable forward masking in stage II. If, on the other hand, they masked via suppression, they should produce little or no forward masking. The contribution of suppression was found to increase with increasing signal frequency; it was absent at 750 Hz, but dominant at 4850 Hz. These results have implications for excitation pattern analyses and are consistent with stronger nonlinear processing at high rather than at low frequencies.  相似文献

The level of a masker necessary to mask a probe fixed in frequency and level was determined as a function of masker frequency using a two-interval forced-choice technique. Both simultaneous- and forward- masking techniques were used. Parameters investigated include the level of the probe tone and the frequency of the probe tone. The general form of the psychophysical tuning curves obtained in this way is quite similar to that of single-neurone tuning curves, when low-level probe tones are used. However, the curves obtained to forward masking generally show sharper tips and steeper slopes than those found in simultaneous masking, and they are also generally sharper than neurophysiological tuning curves. For frequencies of the masker close to that of the probe a simultaneous masker was sometimes less effective than a forward masker. The results are discussed in relation to possible lateral suppression effects in simultaneous masking, and in relation to the observer's use of pitch cues in forward masking. It is concluded that neither the simultaneous-masking curves nor the forward-masking curves are likely to give an accurate representation of human neural tuning curves.  相似文献

When a signal is higher in frequency than a narrow-band masker, thresholds are lower when the masker envelope fluctuates than when it is constant. This article investigates the cues used to achieve the lower thresholds, and the factors that influence the amount of threshold reduction. In experiment I the masker was either a sinusoid (constant envelope) or a pair of equal-amplitude sinusoids (fluctuating envelope) centered at the same frequency as the single sinusoid (250, 1000, 3000, or 5275 Hz). The signal frequency was 1.8 times the masker frequency. At all center frequencies, thresholds were lower for the two-tone masker than for the sinusoidal masker, but the effect was smaller at the highest and lowest frequencies. The reduced effect at high frequencies is attributed to the loss of a cue related to phase locking in the auditory nerve. The reduced effect at low frequencies can be partly explained by reduced slopes of the growth-of-masking functions. In experiment II the masker was a sinusoid amplitude modulated at an 8-Hz rate. Masker and signal frequencies were the same as for the first experiment. Randomizing the modulation depth between the two halves of a forced-choice trial had no effect on thresholds, indicating that changes in modulation depth are not used as a cue for signal detection. Thresholds in the modulated masker were higher than would be predicted if they were determined only by the masker level at minima in the envelope, and the threshold reduction produced by modulating the master envelope was less at 250 Hz than at higher frequencies. Experiments III and IV reveal two factors that contribute to the reduced release from masking at low frequencies: The rate of increase of masked threshold with decreasing duration is greater at 250 Hz than at 1000 Hz; the amount of forward masking, relative to simultaneous masking, is greater at 250 Hz than at 1000 Hz. The results are discussed in terms of the relative importance of across-channel cues and within-channel cues.  相似文献

Modulation thresholds were measured in three subjects for a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) wideband noise (the signal) in the presence of a second amplitude-modulated wideband noise (the masker). In monaural conditions (Mm-Sm) masker and signal were presented to only one ear; in binaural conditions (M0-S pi) the masker was presented diotically while the phase of modulation of the SAM noise signal was inverted in one ear relative to the other. In experiment 1 masker modulation frequency (fm) was fixed at 16 Hz, and signal modulation frequency (fs) was varied from 2-512 Hz. For monaural presentation, masking generally decreased as fs diverged from fm, although there was a secondary increase in masking for very low signal modulation frequencies, as reported previously [Bacon and Grantham, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 85, 2575-2580 (1989)]. The binaural masking patterns did not show this low-frequency upturn: binaural thresholds continued to improve as fs decreased from 16 to 2 Hz. Thus, comparing masked monaural and masked binaural thresholds, there was an average binaural advantage, or masking-level difference (MLD) of 9.4 dB at fs = 2 Hz and 5.3 dB at fs = 4 Hz. In addition, there were positive MLDs for the on-frequency condition (fm = fs = 16 Hz: average MLD = 4.4 dB) and for the highest signal frequency tested (fs = 512 Hz: average MLD = 7.3 dB). In experiment 2 the signal was a SAM noise (fs = 16 Hz), and the masker was a wideband noise, amplitude-modulated by a narrow band of noise centered at fs. There was no effect on monaural or binaural thresholds as masker modulator bandwidth was varied from 4 to 20 Hz (the average MLD remained constant at 8.0 dB), which suggests that the observed "tuning" for modulation may be based on temporal pattern discrimination and not on a critical-band-like filtering mechanism. In a final condition the masker modulator was a 10-Hz-wide band of noise centered at the 64-Hz signal modulation frequency. The average MLD in this case was 7.4 dB. The results are discussed in terms of various binaural capacities that probably play a role in binaural release from modulation masking, including detection of varying interaural intensity differences (IIDs) and discrimination of interaural correlation.  相似文献

Conventional and restricted-listening psychophysical tuning curve paradigms were used to evaluate the masking ability of forward maskers of different envelope characteristics, and the relationship between off-frequency listening effects and the envelope characteristics of both the variable masker and stationary masker used to restrict listening to a narrow region surrounding the probe. Maskers were selected so as to differ widely in the degree of fluctuation in their envelopes. The masker with the largest amplitude fluctuations exhibited greater forward-masking ability than other stimuli; this effect was observed on the high-frequency branch and within the tip region of the tuning curve. It is suggested that differences in masking ability may reflect the use of different signal detection cues. The results are also consistent with previous reports [D. Johnson-Davies and R.D. Patterson, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 65, 756-770 (1979); B.J. O'Loughlin and B.C.J. Moore, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 69, 1119-1125 (1981a)] which suggest that off-frequency listening is a factor contributing to the sharpness of psychophysical tuning curves. This effect is largely dependent, however, on the envelope characteristics of both variable and stationary maskers.  相似文献

A series of four experiments was undertaken to ascertain whether signal threshold in frequency-modulated noise bands is dependent upon the coherence of modulation. The specific goal was to determine whether a masking release could be obtained with frequency modulation (FM), analogous to the comodulation masking release (CMR) phenomenon observed with amplitude modulation (AM). It was hypothesized that an across-frequency grouping process might give rise to such an effect. In experiments 1-3, maskers were composed of three noise bands centered on 1600, 2000, and 2400 Hz; these were either comodulated or noncomodulated with respect to both FM and AM. In experiment 1, the modulation was sinusoidal, and the signal was a 2000-Hz pure tone; in experiment 2, the modulation was random, and the signal was an FM noise band centered on 2000 Hz. The results obtained showed that, given sufficient width of modulation, thresholds were lower in a coherent FM masker than in an incoherent FM masker, regardless of the pattern of AM or signal type. However, thresholds in multiband maskers were usually elevated relative to that in a single-band masker centered on the signal. Experiment 3 demonstrated that coherent FM could be discriminated from incoherent FM. Experiment 4 gave similar patterns of results to the respective conditions of experiments 2 and 3, but for an inharmonic masker with bands centered on 1580, 2000, and 2532 Hz. While within-channel processes could not be entirely excluded from contributing to the present results, the experimental conditions were designed to be minimally conducive to such processes.  相似文献

Psychophysical estimates of compression often assume that the basilar-membrane response to frequencies well below characteristic frequency (CF) is linear. Two techniques for estimating compression are described here that do not depend on this assumption at low CFs. In experiment 1, growth of forward masking was measured for both on- and off-frequency pure-tone maskers for pure-tone signals at 250, 500, and 4000 Hz. The on- and off-frequency masking functions at 250 and 500 Hz were just as shallow as the on-frequency masking function at 4000 Hz. In experiment 2, the forward masker level required to mask a fixed low-level signal was measured as a function of the masker-signal interval. The slopes of these functions did not differ between signal frequencies of 250 and 4000 Hz for the on-frequency maskers. At 250 Hz, the slope for the 150-Hz masker was almost as steep as that for the on-frequency masker, whereas at 4000 Hz the slope for the 2400-Hz masker was much shallower than that for the on-frequency masker. The results suggest that there is substantial compression, of around 0.2-0.3 dB/dB, at low CFs in the human auditory system. Furthermore, the results suggest that at low CFs compression does not vary greatly with stimulation frequency relative to CF.  相似文献

The role of harmonicity in masking was studied by comparing the effect of harmonic and inharmonic maskers on the masked thresholds of noise probes using a three-alternative, forced-choice method. Harmonic maskers were created by selecting sets of partials from a harmonic series with an 88-Hz fundamental and 45 consecutive partials. Inharmonic maskers differed in that the partial frequencies were perturbed to nearby values that were not integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. Average simultaneous-masked thresholds were as much as 10 dB lower with the harmonic masker than with the inharmonic masker, and this difference was unaffected by masker level. It was reduced or eliminated when the harmonic partials were separated by more than 176 Hz, suggesting that the effect is related to the extent to which the harmonics are resolved by auditory filters. The threshold difference was not observed in a forward-masking experiment. Finally, an across-channel mechanism was implicated when the threshold difference was found between a harmonic masker flanked by harmonic bands and a harmonic masker flanked by inharmonic bands. A model developed to explain the observed difference recognizes that an auditory filter output envelope is modulated when the filter passes two or more sinusoids, and that the modulation rate depends on the differences among the input frequencies. For a harmonic masker, the frequency differences of adjacent partials are identical, and all auditory filters have the same dominant modulation rate. For an inharmonic masker, however, the frequency differences are not constant and the envelope modulation rate varies across filters. The model proposes that a lower variability facilitates detection of a probe-induced change in the variability, thus accounting for the masked threshold difference. The model was supported by significantly improved predictions of observed thresholds when the predictor variables included envelope modulation rate variance measured using simulated auditory filters.  相似文献

Upward shifts in the masking pattern with increasing masker intensity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Masking patterns obtained with forward-masking paradigms and relatively intense maskers sometimes have their peaks at the masker frequency and sometimes at a frequency well above it. Here it is shown that which outcome is obtained depends upon certain temporal parameters of the procedure. Specifically, the masking pattern for a 2000-Hz tone showed a gradual shift toward higher frequencies as masker intensity was increased from 65 to 95 dB SPL when long signals (about 50 ms) and long masker-to-signal intervals (about 50 ms) were used, but the effect was absent or smaller when the signals and intervals were short. This shift did not occur with a 750-Hz masker. Upward shifts in the masking pattern with increasing masker intensity are in accord with the view that the peak of displacement of the traveling-wave envelope migrates basally with increasing intensity--an idea that has frequently been suggested as an explanation of the so-called half-octave shift so routinely seen in auditory fatigue experiments.  相似文献

Detection thresholds for a tone in an unfamiliar tonal pattern can be greatly elevated under conditions of masker uncertainty [Neff and Green, Percept. Psychophys. 41, 409-415 (1987); Oh and Lutfi, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 101, 3148 (1997)]. The present experiment was undertaken to determine whether harmonicity of masker tones can reduce the detrimental effect of masker uncertainty. Inharmonic maskers were comprised of m=2-49 frequency components selected at random on each presentation within 100-10000 Hz, excluding frequencies between 920-1080. Harmonic maskers were comprised of frequency components selected at random within this same range, but constrained to have a fundamental frequency of 200 Hz. For inharmonic maskers the signal was a 1000-Hz tone. For harmonic-maskers the signal was a tone whose frequency was either harmonically (1000 Hz) or inharmonically (1047 Hz) related to the masker. In all conditions the amount of masking was greatest for m = 20-40 components. At this point, harmonic maskers with harmonic signal produced an average of 9-12 dB less masking than inharmonic maskers. Harmonic maskers with inharmonic signal produced an average of 16-20 dB less masking.  相似文献

These experiments examine how comodulation masking release (CMR) varies with masker bandwidth, modulator bandwidth, and signal duration. In experiment 1, thresholds were measured for a 400-ms, 2000-Hz signal masked by continuous noise varying in bandwidth from 50-3200 Hz in 1-oct steps. In one condition, using random noise maskers, thresholds increased with increasing bandwidth up to 400 Hz and then remained approximately constant. In another set of conditions, the masker was multiplied (amplitude modulated) by a low-pass noise (bandwidth varied from 12.5-400 Hz in 1-oct steps). This produced correlated envelope fluctuations across frequency. Thresholds were generally lower than for random noise maskers with the same bandwidth. For maskers less than one critical band wide, the release from masking was largest (about 5 dB) for maskers with low rates of modulation (12.5-Hz-wide low-pass modulator). It is argued that this release from masking is not a "true" CMR but results from a within-channel cue. For broadband maskers (greater than 400 Hz), the release from masking increased with increasing masker bandwidth and decreasing modulator bandwidth, reaching an asymptote of 12 dB for a masker bandwidth of 800 Hz and a modulator bandwidth of 50 Hz. Most of this release from masking can be attributed to a CMR. In experiment 2, the modulator bandwidth was fixed at 12.5 Hz and the signal duration was varied. In general, the temporal structure of stimuli must be considered to account for certain observations made in detection and masking experiments in the audio-frequency domain. Two such phenomena are (1) a heightened sensitivity to amplitude increments with a temporal fringe compared to gated level discrimination performance and (2) lower tone-in-noise detection thresholds using a modulated masker compared to those using an unmodulated masker. In the current study, translations of these two experiments were carried out to test the hypothesis that analogous cues might be used in the envelope-frequency domain. Pure-tone carrier amplitude-modulation (AM) depth-discrimination thresholds were found to be similar using both traditional gated stimuli and using a temporally modulated fringe for a fixed standard depth (ms = 0.25) and a range of AM frequencies (4-64 Hz). In a second experiment, masked sinusoidal AM detection thresholds were compared in conditions with and without slow and regular fluctuations imposed on the instantaneous masker AM depth. Release from masking was obtained only for very slow masker fluctuations (less than 2 Hz). A physiologically motivated model that effectively acts as a first-order envelope change detector accounted for several, but not all, of the key aspects of the data.  相似文献

Waveforms that yield comodulation masking release (CMR) when they are presented simultaneously with a signal were used in a standard forward-masking procedure. The signal was a 25-ms sample of a 2500-Hz tone. The masker was a band of noise centered at 2500 Hz, 100 Hz in width, and 200 ms in duration. Presented with the masker were two or four cue bands, each 100 Hz wide and centered at various distances from the masker band. These cue bands either all had the same temporal envelope as the masker band (correlated condition) or their common envelope was different from that of the masker band (uncorrelated condition). In the initial experiments, (1) detectability of the tonal signal was 7-18 dB better when the masker band was accompanied by cue bands than when it was not--an effect that would be expected from past research on lateral suppression--but further, (2) the signal was about 3 dB more detectable in the correlated conditions than in the uncorrelated conditions. In follow-up experiments, these CMR-like differences between the correlated and uncorrelated conditions were substantially reduced (although not eliminated) by presenting a contralateral, wideband noise that was gated synchronously with the masker and/or cue bands. The implications are that the initial results were attributable in part to the "confusion effects" known to exist in certain temporal-masking situations, and that listeners are able to obtain greater information about the temporal extent of a masker band from correlated cue bands than from uncorrelated bands.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Masked thresholds are measured and simulated for bandpass-noise signals ranging in bandwidth from 4 to 256 Hz in the presence of a masking bandpass noise also ranging in bandwidth from 4 to 256 Hz. Signal and masker are centered at 2 kHz. To investigate the role of temporal processing in simultaneous masking, simulations were performed with the modulation-filterbank model by Dau et al. [J. Acoust. Soc Am. 102, 2906-2919 (1997)]. For a fixed masker bandwidth, thresholds are independent of the signal bandwidth as long as the signal bandwidth does not exceed the masker bandwidth and thresholds decrease with increasing masker bandwidth in those conditions. A simple modulation-low-pass filter (energy integrator) would be sufficient to describe the experimental results in those conditions. In contrast, the processing by a modulation filterbank is necessary to account for the conditions of "asymmetry of masking," where thresholds for signals with bandwidths larger than the masker bandwidth are much lower than those for the reversed condition. In those conditions, the modulation-filterbank model is able to use the inherent higher modulation frequencies of the signal as an additional cue.  相似文献

Growth-of-masking (GOM) functions were obtained in three groups of normal-hearing subjects using a simultaneous-masking paradigm. In all cases, the signal frequency (fs) was higher than the masker frequency (fm), either by a certain ratio (1.44) or by a certain distance [3 equivalent rectangular bandwidths (ERBs)]. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of overall frequency on the slope of the steep portion of the GOM function, and to evaluate the change in slope that can occur at high levels. Signal frequency ranged from 400 to 5000 Hz, and masker level ranged from 40 to 95 dB SPL. On average, the slope of the steep portion of the GOM function was about 1.4 for signal frequencies from 400 to 750 Hz, and 2.0 for signal frequencies from 1944 to 5000 Hz. This is consistent with the possibility that the cochlea may behave more linearly at the apical (low-frequency) region than at the basal (high-frequency) region. In addition, for signal frequencies at and above 750 Hz, the slope of the masking function changed from a value much greater than 1.0 to a value of 1.0 at high levels. The change in slope was better correlated with signal sensation level (i.e., amount of masking) than with either signal or masker SPL: the lack of a change at the lower signal frequencies may reflect the smaller amounts of masking there. The change to a linear growth of masking may represent a change in the response to the signal from compressive to linear at high levels.  相似文献

Detectability of a tonal signal added to a tonal masker increases with increasing duration ("temporal integration"), up to some maximum duration. Initially assumed to be some form of energy integration over time, this phenomenon is now often described as the result of a statistical "multiple looks" process. For continuous maskers, listeners may also use a mechanism sensitive to changes in stimulus intensity, possibly a result of inherent sensitivity to amplitude modulation (AM). In order to examine this hypothesis, change detection was investigated in the presence of AM maskers presented at either the same carrier frequency as the target signal or at a distant frequency. The results are compatible with the hypothesis that listeners detect intensity increments by using change-detection mechanisms (modeled here as the outputs of a bank of modulation filters) sensitive to envelope modulation at both low (4-16 Hz) and high (around 100 Hz) rates. AM masking occurred even when the masker was at a carrier frequency more than two octaves above that of the signal to be detected. This finding is also compatible with the hypothesis that similar mechanisms underlie sensitivity to AM (where across-frequency masking is commonly shown) and detection of intensity increments.  相似文献
