The censored single-index model provides a flexible way for modelling the association between a response and a set of predictor variables when the response variable is randomly censored and the link function is unknown. It presents a technique for “dimension reduction” in semiparametric censored regression models and generalizes the existing accelerated failure time models for survival analysis. This paper proposes two methods for estimation of single-index models with randomly censored samples. We first transform the censored data into synthetic data or pseudo-responses unbiasedly, then obtain estimates of the index coefficients by the rOPG or rMAVE procedures of Xia (2006) [1]. Finally, we estimate the unknown nonparametric link function using techniques for univariate censored nonparametric regression. The estimators for the index coefficients are shown to be root-n consistent and asymptotically normal. In addition, the estimator for the unknown regression function is a local linear kernel regression estimator and can be estimated with the same efficiency as the parameters are known. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to illustrate the proposed methodologies.

In this paper, we consider the issue of variable selection in partial linear single-index models under the assumption that the vector of regression coefficients is sparse. We apply penalized spline to estimate the nonparametric function and SCAD penalty to achieve sparse estimates of regression parameters in both the linear and single-index parts of the model. Under some mild conditions, it is shown that the penalized estimators have oracle property, in the sense that it is asymptotically normal with the same mean and covariance that they would have if zero coefficients are known in advance. Our model owns a least square representation, therefore standard least square programming algorithms can be implemented without extra programming efforts. In the meantime, parametric estimation, variable selection and nonparametric estimation can be realized in one step, which incredibly increases computational stability. The finite sample performance of the penalized estimators is evaluated through Monte Carlo studies and illustrated with a real data set.

Semi-parametric estimation of partially linear single-index models
One of the most difficult problems in applications of semi-parametric partially linear single-index models (PLSIM) is the choice of pilot estimators and complexity parameters which may result in radically different estimators. Pilot estimators are often assumed to be root-n consistent, although they are not given in a constructible way. Complexity parameters, such as a smoothing bandwidth are constrained to a certain speed, which is rarely determinable in practical situations. In this paper, efficient, constructible and practicable estimators of PLSIMs are designed with applications to time series. The proposed technique answers two questions from Carroll et al. [Generalized partially linear single-index models, J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 92 (1997) 477-489]: no root-n pilot estimator for the single-index part of the model is needed and complexity parameters can be selected at the optimal smoothing rate. The asymptotic distribution is derived and the corresponding algorithm is easily implemented. Examples from real data sets (credit-scoring and environmental statistics) illustrate the technique and the proposed methodology of minimum average variance estimation (MAVE).

In this paper, the functional-coefficient partially linear regression (FCPLR) model is proposed by combining nonparametric and functional-coefficient regression (FCR) model. It includes the FCR model and the nonparametric regression (NPR) model as its special cases. It is also a generalization of the partially linear regression (PLR) model obtained by replacing the parameters in the PLR model with some functions of the covariates. The local linear technique and the integrated method are employed to give initial estimators of all functions in the FCPLR model. These initial estimators are asymptotically normal. The initial estimator of the constant part function shares the same bias as the local linear estimator of this function in the univariate nonparametric model, but the variance of the former is bigger than that of the latter. Similarly, initial estimators of every coefficient function share the same bias as the local linear estimates in the univariate FCR model, but the variance of the former is bigger than that of the latter. To decrease the variance of the initial estimates, a one-step back-fitting technique is used to obtain the improved estimators of all functions. The improved estimator of the constant part function has the same asymptotic normality property as the local linear nonparametric regression for univariate data. The improved estimators of the coefficient functions have the same asymptotic normality properties as the local linear estimates in FCR model. The bandwidths and the smoothing variables are selected by a data-driven method. Both simulated and real data examples related to nonlinear time series modeling are used to illustrate the applications of the FCPLR model.

In this article we study a semiparametric generalized partially linear model when the covariates are missing at random. We propose combining local linear regression with the local quasilikelihood technique and weighted estimating equation to estimate the parameters and nonparameters when the missing probability is known or unknown. We establish normality of the estimators of the parameter and asymptotic expansion for the estimators of the nonparametric part. We apply the proposed models and methods to a study of the relation between virologic and immunologic responses in AIDS clinical trials, in which virologic response is classified into binary variables. We also give simulation results to illustrate our approach.

This article deals with the inference on a right-censored partially linear single-index model (RCPLSIM). The main focus is the local empirical likelihood-based inference on the nonparametric part in RCPLSIM. With a synthetic data approach, an empirical log-likelihood ratio statistic for the nonparametric part is defined and it is shown that its limiting distribution is not a central chi-squared distribution. To increase the accuracy of the confidence interval, we also propose a corrected empirical log-likelihood ratio statistic for the nonparametric function. The resulting statistic is proved to follow a standard chi-squared limiting distribution. Simulation studies are undertaken to assess the finite sample performance of the proposed confidence intervals. A real example is also considered.

We consider a panel data semiparametric partially linear regression model with an unknown vector β of regression coefficients, an unknown nonparametric function g(·) for nonlinear component, and unobservable serially correlated errors. The correlated errors are modeled by a vector autoregressive process which involves a constant intraclass correlation. Applying the pilot estimators of β and g(·), we construct estimators of the autoregressive coefficients, the intraclass correlation and the error variance, and investigate their asymptotic properties. Fitting the error structure results in a new semiparametric two-step estimator of β, which is shown to be asymptotically more efficient than the usual semiparametric least squares estimator in terms of asymptotic covariance matrix. Asymptotic normality of this new estimator is established, and a consistent estimator of its asymptotic covariance matrix is presented. Furthermore, a corresponding estimator of g(·) is also provided. These results can be used to make asymptotically efficient statistical inference. Some simulation studies are conducted to illustrate the finite sample performances of these proposed estimators.

This article is concerned with the estimating problem of semiparametric varyingcoefficient partially linear regression models. By combining the local polynomial and least squares procedures Fan and Huang (2005) proposed a profile least squares estimator for the parametric component and established its asymptotic normality. We further show that the profile least squares estimator can achieve the law of iterated logarithm. Moreover, we study the estimators of the functions characterizing the non-linear part as well as the error variance. The strong convergence rate and the law of iterated logarithm are derived for them, respectively.

In this paper, we consider the statistical inference for the partially liner varying coefficient model with measurement error in the nonparametric part when some prior information about the parametric part is available. The prior information is expressed in the form of exact linear restrictions. Two types of local bias-corrected restricted profile least squares estimators of the parametric component and nonparametric component are conducted, and their asymptotic properties are also studied under some regularity conditions. Moreover, we compare the efficiency of the two kinds of parameter estimators under the criterion of Lo?ner ordering. Finally, we develop a linear hypothesis test for the parametric component. Some simulation studies are conducted to examine the finite sample performance for the proposed method. A real dataset is analyzed for illustration.

The partially linear additive hazards model has been proposed to study the interaction between some covariates and an exposure variable. In this paper, we extend it to the partially varying coefficient single-index additive hazard model where the high dimension covariates are collapsed to a single index, due to practical needs. Two sets of estimating equations were proposed to estimate the varying coefficient functions in the linear components: the link function for the single index and the single-index parameter vector separately. It was shown that the proposed local and global estimators are asymptotically normal. Simulation studies were conducted to examine the finite-sample performance of our method to compare the relative performance of our method with existing ones. A real data analysis was used to illustrate the proposed methods.

The missing response problem in single-index models is studied, and a bias-correction method to infer the index coefficients is developed. Two weighted empirical log-likelihood ratios with asymptotic chisquare are derived, and the corresponding empirical likelihood confidence regions for the index coefficients are constructed. In addition, the estimators of the index coefficients and the link function are defined, and their asymptotic normalities are proved. A simulation study is conducted to compare the empirical likelihood and the normal approximation based method in terms of coverage probabilities and average lengths of confidence intervals. A real example illustrates our methods.

This article considers a semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear binary regression model. The semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear regression binary model which is a generalization of binary regression model and varying-coefficient regression model that allows one to explore the possibly nonlinear effect of a certain covariate on the response variable. A Sieve maximum likelihood estimation method is proposed and the asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are discussed. One of our main objects is to estimate nonparametric component and the unknowen parameters simultaneously. It is easier to compute, and the required computation burden is much less than that of the existing two-stage estimation method. Under some mild conditions, the estimators are shown to be strongly consistent. The convergence rate of the estimator for the unknown smooth function is obtained, and the estimator for the unknown parameter is shown to be asymptotically efficient and normally distributed. Simulation studies are carried out to investigate the performance of the proposed method.

This paper focuses on the variable selections for semiparametric varying coefficient partially linear models when the covariates in the parametric and nonparametric components are all measured with errors. A bias-corrected variable selection procedure is proposed by combining basis function approximations with shrinkage estimations. With appropriate selection of the tuning parameters, the consistency of the variable selection procedure and the oracle property of the regularized estimators are established. A simulation study and a real data application are undertaken to evaluate the finite sample performance of the proposed method.

This article mainly considers the recurrent event process with independent censoring mechanism through a more flexible varying-coefficient model. The smoothing estimators for the varying-coefficient functions are also proposed via maximizing the kernel weight version of the log-partial likelihood function with respect to the coefficients at each time point. For the selection of appropriate bandwidths and the construction of confidence intervals, the consistent empirical smoothing estimators for the covariance functions of the estimators and a bias correction method are considered. As for the baseline effect function of recurrent events in the population, two different smoothing estimation methods are suggested and investigated. In this study, the asymptotic properties of the proposed smoothing estimators are derived. The finite sample properties of our methods are examined through a Monte Carlo simulation. Moreover, the procedures are applied to a recurrent sample of AIDS link to intravenous experiences (ALIVE) cohort study.

This paper develops a robust profile estimation method for the parametric and nonparametric components of a single-index model when the errors have a strongly unimodal density with unknown nuisance parameter. We derive consistency results for the link function estimators as well as consistency and asymptotic distribution results for the single-index parameter estimators. Under a log-Gamma model, the sensitivity to anomalous observations is studied using the empirical influence curve. We also discuss a robust K-fold cross-validation procedure to select the smoothing parameters. A numerical study carried on with errors following a log-Gamma model and for contaminated schemes shows the good robustness properties of the proposed estimators and the advantages of considering a robust approach instead of the classical one. A real data set illustrates the use of our proposal.
