We investigate properties of subspaces of L2 spanned by subsets of a finite orthonormal system bounded in the L norm. We first prove that there exists an arbitrarily large subset of this orthonormal system on which the L1 and the L2 norms are close, up to a logarithmic factor. Considering for example the Walsh system, we deduce the existence of two orthogonal subspaces of L2n, complementary to each other and each of dimension roughly n/2, spanned by ± 1 vectors (i.e. Kashin’s splitting) and in logarithmic distance to the Euclidean space. The same method applies for p > 2, and, in connection with the Λp problem (solved by Bourgain), we study large subsets of this orthonormal system on which the L2 and the Lp norms are close (again, up to a logarithmic factor). LetT be a complete theory of linear order; the language ofT may contain a finite or a countable set of unary predicates. We prove the following results. (i) The number of nonisomorphic countable models ofT is either finite or 2ω. (ii) If the language ofT is finite then the number of nonisomorphic countable models ofT is either 1 or 2ω. (iii) IfS 1(T) is countable then so isS n(T) for everyn. (iv) In caseS 1(T) is countable we find a relation between the Cantor Bendixon rank ofS 1(T) and the Cantor Bendixon rank ofS n(T). (v) We define a class of modelsL, and show thatS 1(T) is finite iff the models ofT belong toL. We conclude that ifS 1(T) is finite thenT is finitely axiomatizable. (vi) We prove some theorems concerning the existence and the structure of saturated models. Most of the results in this paper appeared in the author’s Master of Science thesis which was prepared at the Hebrew University under the supervision of Professor H. Gaifman.  相似文献

A finite number ofL-functions are associated to every Jacobi cusp form of degreen. TheseL-functions are infinite series constructed with the Fourier coefficients of the form and a variables in ℂn. It is proved that eachL-function has an integral representation, admits a holomorphic continuation to the whole space ℂn, and the row vector formed with them satisfies a particular matrix functional equation.  相似文献

A non-oscillating Paley-Wiener function is a real entire functionf of exponential type belonging toL 2(R) and such that each derivativef (n),n=0, 1, 2,…, has only a finite number of real zeros. It is established that the class of such functions is non-empty and contains functions of arbitrarily fast decay onR allowed by the convergence of the logarithmic integral. It is shown that the Fourier transform of a non-oscillating Paley-Wiener function must be infinitely differentiable outside the origin. We also give close to best possible asymptotic (asn→∞) estimates of the number of real zeros of then-th derivative of a functionf of the class and the size of the smallest interval containing these zeros.  相似文献

We derive conditions on the function c : Rn → R which guarantee that the PDE with p-Laplacian div (❘∇ u❘p-2∇ u ) + c(x)❘u❘p-2u =0, p >1, has no positive solution either in Rn or in the domain Omega_r :={x ∈ Rn : ❘x❘ ≧r} with r arbitrarily large. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We study singularities of Lagrangian mean curvature flow in ℂ n when the initial condition is a zero-Maslov class Lagrangian. We start by showing that, in this setting, singularities are unavoidable. More precisely, we construct Lagrangians with arbitrarily small Lagrangian angle and Lagrangians which are Hamiltonian isotopic to a plane that, nevertheless, develop finite time singularities under mean curvature flow. We then prove two theorems regarding the tangent flow at a singularity when the initial condition is a zero-Maslov class Lagrangian. The first one (Theorem A) states that that the rescaled flow at a singularity converges weakly to a finite union of area-minimizing Lagrangian cones. The second theorem (Theorem B) states that, under the additional assumptions that the initial condition is an almost-calibrated and rational Lagrangian, connected components of the rescaled flow converges to a single area-minimizing Lagrangian cone, as opposed to a possible non-area-minimizing union of area-minimizing Lagrangian cones. The latter condition is dense for Lagrangians with finitely generated H 1(L,ℤ).  相似文献

For a (finite) groupG and some prime powerp n, theH p n -subgroupH pn (G) is defined byH p n (G)=〈xεG|x pn≠1〉. A groupH≠1 is called aH p n -group, if there is a finite groupG such thatH is isomorphic toH p n (G) andH p n (G)≠G. It is known that the Fitting length of a solvableH p n -group cannot be arbitrarily large: Hartley and Rae proved in 1973 that it is bounded by some quadratic function ofn. In the following paper, we show that it is even bounded by some linear function ofn. In view of known examples of solvableH p n -groups having Fitting lengthn, this result is “almost” best possible.  相似文献

We prove that each translation and dilation invariant subspace X ⊂ L p (ℝn), X ≠ L p (ℝn), is contained in a maximal translation and dilation invariant subspace of L p (ℝn). Moreover, we prove that the set of all maximal translation and dilation invariant subspaces of L p (ℝn) has the power of continuum. Let X be a Banach space, (Ω,Σ) a measurable space and let m : Σ → X be a (countably additive) vector measure. Consider the corresponding space of integrable functions L1(m). In this paper we analyze the set of (countably additive) vector measures n satisfying that L1(n) = L1(m). In order to do this we define a (quasi) order relation on this set to obtain under adequate requirements the simplest representation of the space L1(m) associated to downward directed subsets of the set of all the representations. The existence and non-existence of global solutions and theL p blow-up of non-global solutions to the initial value problemu′(t)=Δu(t)+u(t) γ onR n are studied. We consider onlyγ>1. In the casen(γ − 1)/2=1, we present a simple proof that there are no non-trivial global non-negative solutions. Ifn(γ−1)/2≦1, we show under mild technical restrictions that non-negativeL p solutions always blow-up inL p norm in finite time. In the casen(γ−1)/2>1, we give new sufficient conditions on the initial data which guarantee the existence of global solutions. Research partially supported by NSF grant MCS79-03636.  相似文献

We give an explicit AE-axiomatization of the almost sure theories of sparse random graphs G(n, n −α) of Shelah-Spencer. In the process we give a method of constructing extensions of graphs whose ‘relative dimension’ is negative, but arbitrarily small. We describe the existentially closed and locally finite models of the theory and produce types of dimension zero. We offer a useful characterization of forking and generalize results about stability and the Dimensional Order Property (DOP) that were known for graphs to arbitrary relational languages.  Our main result states that for each finite complex L the category TOP of topological spaces possesses a model category structure (in the sense of Quillen) whose weak equivalences are precisely maps which induce isomorphisms of all [L]-homotopy groups. The concept of [L]-homotopy has earlier been introduced by the first author and is based on Dranishnikov’s notion of extension dimension. As a corollary we obtain an algebraic characterization of [L]-homotopy equivalences between [L]-complexes. This result extends two classical theorems of J. H. C. Whitehead. One of them – describing homotopy equivalences between CW-complexes as maps inducing isomorphisms of all homotopy groups – is obtained by letting L = {point}. The other – describing n-homotopy equivalences between at most (n+1)-dimensional CW-complexes as maps inducing isomorphisms of k-dimensional homotopy groups with k ⩽ n – by letting L = S n+1 , n ⩾ 0.  相似文献

For any ample line bundle L on a projective toric variety of dimension n, it is proved that the line bundle L ⊗i is normally generated if i is greater than or equal to n−1, and examples showing that this estimate is best possible are given. Moreover we prove an estimate for the degree of the generators of the ideals defining projective toric varieties. In particular, when L is normally generated, the defining ideal of the variety embedded by the global sections of L has generators of degree at most n+1. When the variety is embedded by the global sections of L ⊗(n−1) , then the defining ideal has generators of degree at most three. Received: 11 July 2001 / Revised version: 17 December 2001  相似文献

LetT be a Markov operator onL 1(X, Σ,m) withT*=P. We connect properties ofP with properties of all productsP ×Q, forQ in a certain class: (a) (Weak mixing theorem)P is ergodic and has no unimodular eigenvalues ≠ 1 ⇔ for everyQ ergodic with finite invariant measureP ×Q is ergodic ⇔ for everyuL 1 with∝ udm=0 and everyfL we haveN −1Σ n ≠1/N |<u, P nf>|→0. (b) For everyuL 1 with∝ udm=0 we have ‖T nu‖1 → 0 ⇔ for every ergodicQ, P ×Q is ergodic. (c)P has a finite invariant measure equivalent tom ⇔ for every conservativeQ, P ×Q is conservative. The recent notion of mild mixing is also treated. Dedicated to the memory of Shlomo Horowitz An erratum to this article is available at .  相似文献

Let S be a compact infinite set in the complex plane with 0∉S, and let R n be the minimal residual polynomial on S, i.e., the minimal polynomial of degree at most n on S with respect to the supremum norm provided that R n (0)=1. For the norm L n (S) of the minimal residual polynomial, the limit k(S):=limn?¥n?{Ln(S)}\kappa(S):=\lim_{n\to\infty}\sqrt[n]{L_{n}(S)} exists. In addition to the well-known and widely referenced inequality L n (S)≥κ(S) n , we derive the sharper inequality L n (S)≥2κ(S) n /(1+κ(S)2n ) in the case that S is the union of a finite number of real intervals. As a consequence, we obtain a slight refinement of the Bernstein–Walsh lemma.  相似文献

We present a uniqueness theorem for time-periodic solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations in unbounded domains. Thus far, results on the uniqueness of time-periodic solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations in unbounded domain, roughly speaking, have only found that a small time-periodic L n -solution is unique within the class of solutions which have sufficiently small L (L n )-norm. In this paper, we show that a small time-periodic L n -solution is unique within the class of all time-periodic L n -solutions, which contains large solutions. We also consider the uniqueness of solutions in weak-L n space. The proof of the present uniqueness theorem is based on the method of dual equations.   相似文献

LetX be a finite set ofn elements and ℓ a family ofk-subsets ofX. Suppose that for a given setL of non-negative integers all the pairwise intersections of members of ℓ have cardinality belonging toL. Letm(n, k, L) denote the maximum possible cardinality of ℓ. This function was investigated by many authors, but to determine its exact value or even its correct order of magnitude appears to be hopeless. In this paper we investigate the case |L|=3. We give necessary and sufficient conditions form(n, k, L)=O(n) andm(n, k, L)≧O(n 2), and show that in some casesm(n, k, L)=O(n 3/2), which is quite surprising.  相似文献

LetE be a bounded Borel subset of ℝn,n≥2, of positive Lebesgue measure andP E the corresponding ‘Pompeiu transform”. We prove thatP E is injective onL p(ℝn) if 1≤p≤2n/(n-1). We explore the connection between this problem and a Wiener-Tauberian type theorem for theM(n) action onL q(ℝn) for various values ofq. We also take up the question of whenP E is injective in caseE is of finite, positive measure, but is not necessarily a bounded set. Finally, we briefly look at these questions in the contexts of symmetric spaces of compact and non-compact type.  相似文献
