An adiabatic free-electron laser wiggler for electron beam bunching is described. A free-electron laser naturally bunches an electron beam. When the beam is trapped adiabatically, the emittance of the bunched beam is decreased significantly compared with abrupt trapping. For a 57-period two-meter buncher having poleface magnetic field of 2 T and 10 GW of 100 μm radiation, adiabatic trapping reduces the final emittance by a factor of three  相似文献

The amplification mechanism of the ion-channel laser (ICL) in the low-gain regime is studied. In this concept, a relativistic electron beam is injected into a plasma whose density is comparable to or lower than the beam's density. The head of the electron beam pushes out the plasma electrons, leaving an ion channel. The ion-focusing force causes the electrons to oscillate (betatron oscillations) about the axis and plays a role similar to the magnetic field in a cyclotron autoresonance maser (CARM). Radiation can be produced with wave frequencies from microwaves to X-rays depending on the beam energy and plasma density: ω~2γ3/2ωpe, where γ is the Lorentz factor of the beam and ωpe is the plasma frequency. Transverse (relativistic) bunching and axial (conventional) bunching are the amplification mechanisms in ICLs; only the latter effect operates in free-electron lasers. The competition of these two bunching mechanisms depends on beam velocity ν0z; their dependences on ν0z cancel for the cyclotron autoresonance masers. A linear theory is developed to study the physical mechanisms, and a PIC (particle-in-cell) simulation code is used to verify the theory. 基于高增益自由电子激光饱和状态的统计物理方法,在不同的电子束相空间初始分布下对原有理论进行了发展和推广,借助于多重数值积分技术解决了粒子束一般动量初始分布带来的计算困难,并以更接近实际的高斯动量分布为例进行计算。作为对比验证编写高斯初始动量分布下的直接数值模拟程序,将高斯初始分布同"水袋"两种初始分布的"暖电子束"入射情形下自由电子激光达到饱和时系统的光强、聚束因子和粒子相空间分布均进行相应计算和比较。结果表明:数值模拟和统计计算结果相一致;在目前选取的参数范围内,两种初始分布的相应结果差异并不显著。  相似文献

An electron beam, prebunched at the synchronous free-electron laser frequency and passing through a magnetic undulator, emits coherent (superradiant) synchrotron undulator radiation at the bunching frequency. If an external electromagnetic wave is introduced into the interaction region, at the same frequency and at a proper phase, the radiation process will be stimulated (stimulated prebunched beam radiation). We report first experimental measurements of stimulated superradiant emission in a prebunched free-electron maser. Measurements are in good agreement with theory.  相似文献

A radio-frequency (RF) gun for a race-track microtron-recuperator injector driving the free-electron laser (FEL) (Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics) is being tested at a special stand. Electron bunches of the RF gun have an energy of up to 300 keV and a repetition rate of up to 90 MHz. The average electro-beam current can reach 100 mA in the continuous operation regime. The advantages of the new injector are as follows: long lifetime of the cathode for high average beam current; simple scheme of longitudinal beam bunching, which does not require an additional bunching resonator in the injector; absence of dark-current contamination of the injector beam; and comfortable RF gun operation due to the absence of a high potential of 300 kV at the cathode control circuits. In this study we describe the RF gun design, present the main characteristics of the injector with the RF gun, and give the results of testing.  相似文献

Two-color operation in free-electron laser (FEL) amplifiers is studied using a 3D nonlinear polychromatic simulation. We assume the FEL is seeded at two closely spaced wavelengths within the gain band, and study the growth of the seeds and a discrete spectrum of beat waves that are outside the gain band. The beat waves grow parasitically due to electron bunching in the seeded waves with growth rates higher than the seeded waves. Injection of narrow-band seeds ensures a discrete spectrum. An example is discussed corresponding to an x-ray FEL; however, the physics is applicable to all spectral ranges.  相似文献

A scheme to generate intense coherent light that carries orbital angular momentum (OAM) at the fundamental wavelength of an x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) is described. The OAM light is emitted as the dominant mode of the system until saturation provided that the helical microbunching imposed on the electron beam is larger than the shot-noise bunching that leads to self-amplified emission. Operating at the fundamental, this scheme is more efficient than alternate schemes that rely on harmonic emission, and can be applied to x-ray FELs without using external optical mode conversion elements.  相似文献

为了研制紧凑型自由电子激光装置,开展自由电子激光太赫兹技术研究,需要研制微波电子枪作为高品质电子束源,为此,中国工程物理研究院研制了独立调谐热阴极微波电子枪。在前期进行了初步热测实验的基础上,通过改进实验环境、优化实验参数,进一步开展大量实验,深入研究了热阴极微波电子枪的热测实验结果。实验结果表明:微波电子枪出口处束流强度可超过500 mA,电子反轰效应随着首腔电场的相位和幅度调节发生显著变化。该热阴极微波电子枪已经应用于紧凑型自由电子激光装置。  相似文献

 通过选择适当电子初始的横纵向速度比,并引进坡度磁场的方法,来提高同轴腔电子回旋微波激射器效率。非线性模拟表明,用这种办法可以将德国卡尔斯鲁研究中心研制的同轴腔电子回旋微波激射振荡器的实验效率,从26.7%提高到31.5%。这种效率放大的物理机制是:坡度磁场改变了相对论电子的运动条件,有效地改善了波束互作用过程中电子的群聚状态,使电子束有更多的动能转换为电磁能,从而提高了电子束的换能效率。  相似文献

A re-examination of the traveling wave interaction (in the helix traveling wave tube and the free-electron laser) is performed using three-dimensional linear stability analyses for an idealized annular electron beam model in order to investigate the validity of the well-known scaling laws in which the gain varies as the cube (fourth) root of the current when space-charge effects are negligible (dominant). The results indicate that these scaling laws are simplistic generalizations which break down for broad bandwidth interactions, and that the actual variation of the pain, with the current can be more complex. A three-dimensional nonlinear analysis of a free-electron laser using a more realistic electron beam model is also discussed in which these scaling laws are also shown to break down,  相似文献

Generation of short-wavelength radiation by a free-electron laser using up-frequency conversion of an electron bunch density modulation is currently an area of active research. We propose a new scheme for producing the longitudinal electron bunch density modulation similar to the recently proposed echo-enabled harmonic generation but based on an emittance exchange beam line and a multislit mask. An amplifier based on a high-power free-electron planar laser operating at a wavelength of 4 mm is simulated. The system is built around the U-3 accelerator, which forms a ribbon relativistic electron beam with an energy of up to 1 MeV and a total operating current of up to 2 kA. The simulation uses various approaches, including the direct numerical simulation of the Maxwell equations and particle motion equations by means of the PIC-code KARAT. Analysis is made of a free-electron laser with many optical cavities where the cavities communicate with each other, not optically, but through the electron beam. Analytic analysis is made in a one-dimensional, linear approximation. A general expression is given for the growth rate in the exponential (high current) regime. In the regime where lethargy is important expressions are given in the two opposite limits of small and large numbers of cavities and bunches. Numerical simulation results, still in the one-dimensional approximation, but including nonlinearities, are presented. Three examples of the multi-cavity free-electron laser (MC/FEL) are presented.  相似文献

This Letter reports the first experimental results from the world's first distributed optical-klystron (DOK) free-electron laser (FEL), the DOK-1 FEL, at Duke University. The DOK-1 FEL is a hybrid system, comprised of four wigglers: two horizontal and two helical. With the DOK-1 FEL, we have obtained the highest FEL gain among all storage ring based FELs at 47.8% (+/-2.7%) per pass. We have also demonstrated that the FEL gain can be enhanced by increasing electron bunching using wigglers with a different polarization. Furthermore, we have realized controlled polarization switches of the FEL beam by a nonoptical means through the manipulation of a buncher magnet.  相似文献

通过数值计算及粒子模拟程序, 分析了强流电子束阻抗、电压及电流特性对相对论速调管放大器(relativistic klystron amplifier, RKA)中束流调制、群聚特性的影响, 其中粒子模拟程序中采用 束发射方式以精确控制电子束的阻抗.结果表明, 低阻抗电子束有利于减小群聚距离, 缩短RKA器件的整体长度, 不利于注入微波对电子束的调制, 而高阻抗电子束情况正好相反.在电子束阻抗不变时, 增加电子束加速电压类似于增大电子束阻抗的情况.另外, 用粒子模拟方法确定了不同阻抗电子束对特定输入腔的电子负载电导, 从而可以得到不同阻抗的强流电子束对种子源 功率水平的需求以及对输入腔外观品质因数的要求. 关键词: 相对论速调管放大器 电子束阻抗 群聚距离 输入调制  相似文献

考虑电子束横向发射度和电子β振荡,将2005年国际上提出的单通过高增益自由电子激光饱和状态分析的统计物理方法发展到三维情形。首先建立一种描述电子三维运动的归一化简化模型,推导了一维光场下包含电子横向运动的Vlasov方程。在螺旋型波荡器情形下通过引入横向运动守恒量发展了三维统计物理分析方法,并编写了相应计算程序,计算自由电子激光达到饱和时系统的光强增益、聚束因子。作为对比验证,编写包含N个电子自由电子激光系统的三维直接数值模拟程序,结果表明数值模拟和统计计算结果相一致。对比文献中一维模拟和一维统计理论计算结果,所得结果反映了电子束横向发射度以及电子在波荡器中的横向β振荡对饱和点参数的影响。  相似文献

The interaction of free electrons and free electromagnetic radiation, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, can result in stimulated emission or absorption. We analyze the dynamics of single electrons by solving the classical, relativistic Lorentz force equations of motion in these combined fields. An electron may gain energy from, or lose energy to, the radiation field, depending crucially on the phase and oscillation frequency of the electron's helical motion within the superposed, circularly polarized light wave. To first order in the radiation field strength, electrons in a monoenergetic, uniformly distributed beam become spatially bunched, but there is no net energy change. To second order, however, the beam may experience a gain or loss of energy, corresponding to attenuation or amplification of radiation. We compare the bunching of this laser process to the bunching processes involved in 1) the Stanford free-electron laser and 2) the cyclotron maser, and find significant differences in each case. Our analytic results provide a clear, simple picture of the interaction process, and can be useful in exploring light amplification in astrophysical magnetic fields, the magnetosphere, or in laboratory devices.
