Optical Tamm states localized at the edges of a photonic crystal bounded from one or both sides by a nanocomposite have been studied. The nanocomposite consists of metallic nanoinclusions, which have a spherical or orientationally ordered spheroidal shape and are dispersed in a transparent matrix, and is characterized by the resonant effective permittivity. The transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra have been calculated for waves with longitudinal and transverse polarizations in such structures at the normal incidence of light. The spectral manifestation of Tamm states that is due to the existence of negative values of the real part of the effective permittivity has been analyzed for the visible spectral range. It has been established that the characteristics of Tamm states localized at the edge of the photonic crystal depend strongly both on the concentration of nanoballs in the nanocomposite film and on its thickness. Modes formed by two coupled Tamm plasmon polaritons localized at the edges of the photonic crystal adjacent to two nanocomposite layers have been examined. It has been shown that, in the case of the anisotropic nanocomposite layer adjacent to the photonic crystal, each of two orthogonal polarizations of the incident wave corresponds to a specific frequency of the Tamm state localized at the edge; owing to this property, the transmission spectra of such a structure are polarization sensitive. 相似文献

The spectral response of the lateral optical anisotropy of periodic undoped type-II ZnSe/BeTe heterostructures with nonequivalent interfaces was studied by ellipsometry. The spectra revealed two types of features corresponding to optical transitions with energies lying in the bandgap. The position of features of the first type does not depend on the heterostructure period. Features of the second type shift toward lower energies with decreasing period of the heterostructure. This behavior is explained in terms of a model taking into account the existence of electronic and hole interface states and of a mixed-type interface state. 相似文献

The nanocomposite consists of nanoparticles with a dielectric core and a metal shell, which are dispersed in a transparent matrix. The theory of modification of surface Tamm states on fractal surfaces is developed, and manifestations of such phenomena are analyzed. The obtained results suggest that the fractality of free and inner surfaces of nanoobjects affects their electronic spectrum, which may lead to modification of the physical and chemical properties of nanostructures. 相似文献

The fine structure of the π-electron spectrum of semi-infinite carbotubulenes (cylindrical graphene tubes) is investigated.
Together with closed short-diameter tubelenes, open nanotubes whose terminal fragments contain heteroatoms are studied. Algebraic
equations are obtained for the one-electron energy levels corresponding to wave functions localized on a terminal fragment.
It is shown that Tamm energy levels, lying in either the band gaps or the continuous spectrum (resonance states), can exist
in the systems studied.

We report the observation of photovoltage oscillations in back-gated two-dimensional electron systems when tuning the density under incident microwaves and in the absence of a magnetic field. The oscillations are periodic in the inverse of the square root of the density. They originate from the interference of screened bulk plasmons with a linear dispersion. This phenomenon can be exploited to devise a spectrometer-on-a-chip for millimeter waves. The influence of a perpendicular magnetic field is investigated and reveals a transformation of screened bulk plasmons waves into screened edge magnetoplasmons. 相似文献

We have demonstrated theoretically that it is possible to use the resonant coupling of exciton-polaritons in a planar microcavity and Tamm plasmons at a metal film on the surface of the structure to provide lateral spatial control of the exciton-polaritons within the cavity. The resonant coupling of the Tamm plasmons to cavity exciton-polaritons results in a triplet of hybrid plasmon–exciton-polariton modes with the lowest at a significantly lower energy than that of the unperturbed exciton-polaritons. Further, a patterned metal film on the structure surface can provide a sufficiently large lateral modulation of the excitation energy that localization of the exciton-polaritons within chosen regions of the cavity is possible. We show how the approach opens the way to a practical demonstration of polariton channels, traps, and devices, including logic gates. 相似文献

We demonstrate the existence of a spectrally narrow localized surface state, the so-called optical Tamm state, at the interface between one-dimensional magnetophotonic and nonmagnetic photonic crystals. The state is spectrally located inside the photonic band gaps of each of the photonic crystals comprising this magnetophotonic structure. This state is associated with a sharp transmission peak through the sample and is responsible for the substantial enhancement of the Faraday rotation for the corresponding wavelength. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions. 相似文献

We study the electronic surface waves (the so-called Tamm states) localized at the interface between a graphene-based superlattice and a homogeneous graphene by applying suitable electrodes on a graphene sheet. The magnitude as well as the sign of the slope of the Tamm dispersive curve can be flexibly tuned just by varying the external voltage. Particularly, in addition to the conventional forward Tamm states, backward Tamm states in which the wave vector of the electronic surface wave is antiparallel with the group velocity can be realized. 相似文献

We discuss the energy levels at the surface of a one-dimensional semi-infinite crystal which Aerts calculated via the scattering matrix method. He found that the number of possible surface states in the first forbidden gap is two, one or zero. Normal incidence electroreflectance spectra of Ag and Au single crystal electrodes in aqueous electrolytes reveal pronounced structural features, which can be assigned to optical transitions involving empty surface states. The transition energies show a marked dependence on the electrode potential as predicted by the calculation of Ho, Harmon and Liu. It is demonstrated that electroreflectance of metal electrodes in the double layer charging region is a sensitive tool for studying metallic surface states. 相似文献

A survey is given of the study of surface states at metal-electrolyte interfaces, which comprises both crystal-induced and image-potential-induced states. Because the energetic position varies with electrode potential, surface states can be conveniently investigated in an electrochemical cell by electroreflectance spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that crystal-induced surface states can act as a probe for the potential gradient inside the electric double layer and hence can yield valuable information on interfacial properties. Furthermore, the influence of anion adsorption on surface states, the appearance of surface states in thin metal overlayers with increasing film thickness and the monitoring of surface reconstruction by surface states are briefly discussed. 相似文献

Effective optical constants of stratified metal-dielectric metameterial are presented. The effective constants are determined by the two-complex reflectivity method (TCRM). The TCRM reveals the full components of the effective permittivity and permeability tensors and indicates the remarkable anisotropy of metallic and dielectric components below the effective plasma frequency. On the other hand, above the plasma frequency, one of the effective refractive indices takes a positive value less than unity and is associated with small loss. The photonic states are confirmed by the distribution of electromagnetic fields. 相似文献

The transmission spectra of two-period metal-dielectric structure are studied through the transfer matrix method. When the dielectric is nonlinear material, an optical bistability has been found. The upper threshold value is insensitive to incident frequency, while the lower threshold value increases with the incident frequency decreasing. The reflection and transmission spectra of a finite thickness 2D photonic crystal slab (PCS) based on macroporous silicon are investigated. Periodic photonic crystal region is separated from air by homogeneous silicon interfacial layers. These interfacial layers at the silicon/air boundary being defects of the photonic crystal lattice, define the properties of surface Tamm states in the photonic stop‐bands (PSBs). It is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically that the reflection spectra of a structure with different thicknesses of the interfacial layers on both sides of the PCS depend on the illuminated side. At the same time, the transmission spectra are identical for both light directions in agreement with the reciprocity principle. All-optical bistable switching is proposed to realize by using an optical Tamm cavity in which a Kerr medium is sandwiched between a metal layer and a Bragg mirror. Results show that the excitation of clockwise and counterclockwise bistable switching under the control of external optical injection is due to the presence of optical Tamm states. In addition, the bistable characteristics of optical Tamm cavities are found to be sensitive to the polarization of external optical injection. 相似文献
