We theoretically prove that a conventional Mach-Zehnder modulator can generate an optical frequency comb with excellent spectral flatness. The modulator is asymmetrically dual driven by large amplitude sinusoidal signals with different amplitudes. The driving condition to obtain spectral flatness is analytically derived and optimized, yielding a simple formula. This formula also predicts the conversion efficiency and bandwidth of the generated frequency comb.  相似文献

We generate the duobinary signal by utilizing the intensity modulation characteristic of the electroabsorption modulator and the phase characteristic of phase shifter for the high-speed transmission system. In addition, compared to those commercial 10 Gbps OOK modulators, lower cost, better performances and easier integration can be achieved by using these duobinary modulators.  相似文献

A scheme to generate ultra-flat and stable optical frequency comb (OFC) based on multi-wavelength optical seed source and polarization-modulator-based complementary frequency shifter (PCFS) has been proposed and demonstrated. The OFC generation scheme includes two stages: 5-carrier light source is generated by utilizing a polarization modulator at the first stage, and the light source is then used as the seed light in the PCFS at the second stage. Compared with the previous flat OFC generator based on a recirculation frequency shifter, the proposed scheme can greatly reduce the recirculation times, and such a property makes the accumulated noise of the system enormously decrease. In order to achieve the frequency comb with the best flatness, the optical amplifier gain, filter stop-band attenuation and modulator drive voltage are optimized. Experiment simulations show that high-quality OFC with hundreds of frequency lines and power fluctuation within 2 dB can be achieved without direct-current bias control and wavelength-selective-switch.  相似文献

In two-dimensional (2D) time-spreading/wavelength-hopping optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) systems, employing less coherent broadband optical pulse sources allows lower electrical operating rate and better system performance. An optical gate based scheme for generating weakly coherent(approximately incoherent) broadband optical pulses was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Inthis scheme, the terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer, together with a coherent narrowband controlpulse source, turns an incoherent broadband continuous-wave (CW) light source into the required pulse source.  相似文献

We report about the optical frequency comb generation by means of a bulk type phase modulator with periodic domain inversion. The phase modulator operates as a quasi-velocity-matched electro-optical phase modulator having high modulation efficiency. It is possible to generate a broadband optical frequency comb by using the modulator installed into an Fabry-Perot resonator. In this experiment, we made the quasi-velocity-matched phase modulator and then used it to generate the efficient optical frequency comb. From this result, we could confirm operation characteristics of the optical frequency comb and the utility of the phase modulator respectively.  相似文献

We propose a system that can perform microwave bandpass filtering and phase shifting simultaneously without redundant optical-electrical and electrical-optical conversions. The principle is based on polarization-dependant phase modulation of a broadband optical source and the variable optical carrier time shift method. A single-bandpass microwave photonic filter with a central frequency of 10.8 GHz, a 3-dB bandwidth of 670 MHz, and a 360° phase tuning range is experimentally demonstrated. The capability of our configuration to implement wideband phase shifters is also verified.  相似文献

We demonstrate a method for generating ultrashort pulses from a phase-modulated optical signal by using a dispersion-imbalanced nonlinear loop mirror instead of the traditional linear dispersion medium. The extinction ratio of the pulses is greatly improved at the same time. By controlling the bandwidth of the phase-modulated signal and the dispersion map of the dispersion-imbalanced nonlinear loop mirror, we can control the pulse width from several picoseconds to hundreds of femtoseconds.  相似文献

In the paper, the simple method of laser chirp parameters estimation is presented. It is based on measuring time-domain distortions of chirped signal transmitted through dispersive fiber and finding laser chirp parameters by matching measured distortions to calculated ones. Experiments undertaken with 1.55 μm telecommunication grade distributed feedback (DFB) lasers and standard single-mode fiber are described, together with some practical remarks on measurement setup and main conclusions.  相似文献

We propose an ultrafast optical arbitrary waveform synthesizing/analyzing technique demonstrated with 2 Tbit/s waveforms. An ultrafast waveform was generated by manipulating the amplitude and phase of a 400?GHz optical frequency comb using a newly developed colorless optical synthesizer. The 400?GHz optical frequency comb was generated from a 25?GHz optical frequency comb using a colorless arrayed waveguide grating. This waveform was then analyzed on the frequency axis using a custom heterodyne-detection technique based on the dual-heterodyne mixing method. The phase and amplitude spectra can be observed in parallel using another optical frequency comb as a reference combined with an arrayed waveguide grating. This optical system, named the ultrafast optical frequency comb synthesizer and analyzer, can synthesize and analyze an arbitrary waveform in the THz frequency region.  相似文献

Optical frequency comb generation by using a novel optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and demonstrated with the emphasis placed on self-oscillating operation. In the OEO, a wideband LiNbO3 phase modulator is driven with a large-amplitude radio-frequency (RF) feedback signal to generate a deeply phase-modulated light wave; accordingly, an optical frequency comb with a bandwidth greater than the RF signal is generated by self-oscillation. Although it generates multifrequency components, the OEO exhibits characteristics of a single-mode oscillator. Its operation is stable and self-starting. An optical frequency comb with a 120 GHz bandwidth and 9.95 GHz frequency spacing was successfully generated by self-oscillation at a single frequency.  相似文献

We demonstrate integrated semiconductor optical devices with ultrafast temporal responses based on the plasma-dispersion effect. The geometry of the devices removes the dependence of the modulation time on the free-carrier dynamics. We present the theoretical analysis of the performance of such devices. We show that a silicon-based device with a free-carrier lifetime of 1.4 ns can be modulated on a time scale of only 20 ps. The ultrafast operation is verified experimentally.  相似文献

In this paper, we have theoretically investigated the transmission performance of the optical millimeter (mm)-wave generated by using an external modulator based on optical carrier suppression for the first time. According to our theory, the data signals carried by the optical mm-wave are transmitted in the dispersion fiber without fading but are degraded greatly because of the time shift of the code edges, which still limits the transmission distance. We report on the demonstration of the chirp transform algorithm for the instantaneous optical frequency analysis of wide band radiofrequency signals. The process exploits photon echoes in an Er3+:YSO crystal at 1536 nm. The analysis covers a 1.6 GHz instantaneous bandwidth together with more than 24,000 independent channels. These performances require a frequency agile laser source that is phase-locked in order to take advantage of the tens of μs of coherence time offered by the crystal optical transition.  相似文献

利用分立激光器合成大带宽线性调频步进信号(FSCS)激光信号源以实现高分辨测距。依据FSCS信号测距原理,数值计算了激光器各参数对合成FSCS信号的影响及其误差容限。计算表明,在各激光器参数误差中,起始频率和起始时间误差是引起合成FSCS信号测距分辨力恶化的最主要因素。另外,利用一台中心波长1550 nm、线宽为150 kHz的线性调波长激光器,通过光学斩波方式,模拟产生了合成FSCS信号,进行了高分辨力的测距演示。理论分析与实验结果表明,采用分立激光器合成高分辨力测距FSCS信号是可行的。  相似文献

A novel method of a filterless optical millimeter-wave (MMW) signal generation with frequency octupling via a nested multimode interference (MMI) coupler is proposed for Radio-over-fiber systems. By setting the DC bias voltage applied to the central arms of MMI-b and MMI-c accurately, the optical carrier can be completely suppressed. The OSSR can be as high as about 58 dB without optical filter and the radio frequency spurious suppression ratio (RFSSR) exceeds 32 dB, which is the best result as we know. Simulation results suggest that when the generated optical mm-wave signal is transmitted along the standard single-mode fiber, the eye diagram is still opened after being transmitted over a 50 km fiber.  相似文献

A phase modulation of an optical frequency comb has been applied to measure a fine spectrum in the 1.5 μm wavelength range by the optical heterodyne-detection method. A novel scheme is proposed for frequency sextupling mm-wave generation based on a laser and an integrated dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) without optical filter. Theoretical analysis is presented to suppress the undesired optical sidebands for the high quality generation of frequency sextupling mm-wave signal. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by simulations. Utilizing the integrated MZM consisted of two sub-MZMs with extinction ratio of 30 dB, the optical sideband suppression ratio (OSSR) is as high as 29.9 dB and the radio frequency spurious suppression ratio (RFSSR) exceeds 24 dB without any optical or electrical filter. The impact of the nonideal RF driven voltage and phase difference of RF driven signal applied to two sub-MZMs of the integrated MZM on OSSR and RFSSR is discussed and analyzed. After transmission over fiber, the generated optical mm-wave signal demonstrates good performance. Furthermore, the performance of two cases for the proposed scheme is also compared.  相似文献
