In the ILC (International Linear Collider) main linac, low emittance preservation is the most important issue for beam dynamics study. As the main sources of emittance dilution, the dispersive and wakefield effects were studied in this paper. The theoretical calculations and numerical simulations of these two effects on single-bunch emittance dilution, without any misalignment errors, are presented in detail.  相似文献

An investigation is made to determine how inaccuracies in mounting the quadrupole lenses influence the dilution of the transverse emittance of the beam. The study is made for two specific designs of 500 GeV linear colliders, thermal and superconducting. The analytical prediction is compared with the results of numerical calculations on the averaging of the beam emittance dilution effects for various sets of random deviations of the lenses from the accelerator axis. Measurements of the beam emittance during bunch compression in the CLIC Test Facility (CTF-II) are described. The measurements were made with different beam charges and different energy correlations versus the bunch compressor settings which were varied from no compression through the point of full compression and to overcompression. Significant increases in the beam emittance were observed with the maximum emittance occurring near the point of full (maximal) compression. Finally, evaluation of possible emittance dilution mechanisms indicates that coherent synchrotron radiation was the most likely cause.  相似文献

The high current and short bunch of the electron beam in the BEPCII injector linac cause the wakefield effects on the beam performance dilution. These wakefield effects on longitudinal and transverse beam dynamics are systematically studied with analysis and numerical beam modeling, including the single bunch short-range wake effects and the multi-bunch long-range wake effects on beam energy, energy spread, emittance, orbit offset and primary electron beam spot size on the positron production target. The emittance growth induced by Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) is an important issue when electron bunches with short bunch length and high peak current are transported in a bending magnet. In this paper, a single kick method is introduced that could give the same result as the R-matrix method, but is much easier to use. Then, with this method, an optics design technique is introduced that could minimize the emittance dilution within a single achromatic cell.  相似文献

Beam emittance plays an important role in any accelerator, and it is a main parameter to judge the performance of an accelerator. Emittance optimization is an indispensable part in conditioning and operation of the facility. For a laser-driven high brightness injector, different time structure of the laser pulse has different effects on transverse emittance. In order to compare Gaussian and flat-top laser pulse, systematic simulations of 500 pC have been done. From the simulation results, one can see that flat-top pulse laser will yield smaller minimal transverse beam size and transverse beam emittance than Gaussian pulse laser.  相似文献

I describe a scheme for selectively isolating high density low longitudinal emittance beam particles in a storage ring from the rest of the beam without emittance dilution. I discuss the general principle of the method, called longitudinal momentum mining, beam dynamics simulations and results of beam experiments. Multi-particle beam dynamics simulations applied to the Fermilab 8 GeV Recycler (a storage ring) convincingly validate the concepts and feasibility of the method, which I have demonstrated with beam experiments in the Recycler. We show that pronounced collective nonlinear behavior is present in a beam with linear coupling and space charge as described by the complete second order moment equations. The collective effects result in a shifted and broadened resonance condition as well as saturation effects in the emittance transfer. For slow stop-band crossing either the beam evolves along a skewed matched solution with full emittance exchange or the exchange is hindered by collective space charge effects, depending on the emittance ratio and direction of crossing.  相似文献

Based on the multi-slit method, a new method is introduced to measure the non linear force caused emittance growth in a RF photoinjector. It is possible to reconstruct the phase space of a beam under some conditions by the multi-slit method. Based on the reconstructed phase space, besides the emittance, the emittance growth from the distortion of the phase space can also be measured. The emittance growth results from the effects of nonlinear force acting on electron, which is very important for the high quality beam in a RF photoinjector.  相似文献

Electron beams with the lowest, normalized transverse emittance recorded so far were produced and confirmed in single-bunch-mode operation of the Accelerator Test Facility at KEK. We established a tuning method of the damping ring which achieves a small vertical dispersion and small x-y orbit coupling. The vertical emittance was less than 1% of the horizontal emittance. At the zero-intensity limit, the vertical normalized emittance was less than 2.8 x 10(-8) rad m at beam energy 1.3 GeV. At high intensity, strong effects of intrabeam scattering were observed, which had been expected in view of the extremely high particle density due to the small transverse emittance.  相似文献

In this paper, we have found a new set of parameters for the short two-stage ILC bunch compres-sors. The RF sections are both in the accelerating phase rather than the decelerating phase to improve the accelerating efficiency. We have also studied the CSR related issues. The results show that the microbunch instability exists extensively in the second bunch compressor, but the emittance dilution is small due to the relatively long bunch.  相似文献

Brightness is an important parameter for 3rd generation light source. Correcting the emittance coupling is a realistic way to increase brightness without any additional equipment in a machine under operation. The main sources of emittance coupling are betatron coupling and vertical dispersion. At the SSRF storage ring, tune split and LOCO are used to measure the respective betatron and emittance coupling. Both of these sources can be corrected by skew quadrupoles. By measuring the skew quadrupole-coupling response matrix, betatron coupling can be changed from 0.014% to 2%. But the vertical dispersion changes at the same time. LOCO can find the suitable setting to correct simultaneously the betatron coupling and vertical dispersion. The emittance coupling can be reduced to 0.17% by this method. More simulations show the potential for smaller emittance coupling if more skew quadrupoles are employed.  相似文献

A new SSC(Separated Sector Cyclotron)-Linac is being designed to serve as an injector for the SSC at the HIRFL(Heavy Ion Research Facility Lanzhou).The beam intensity at the LEBT(Low Energy Beam Transport)for the heavy ions after the selection is typically low and the space charge effects are inconspicuous.The space charge effects become obvious when the beam current increases to a few hundred microamperes.The emittance growth deriving from the space charge effects may be particularly troublesome for the following linac and cyclotron.An optical system containing three solenoids has been designed for the LEBT to limit the beam emittance and to avoid the unnecessary beam loss in the cyclotron,as well as for the purpose of immunizing the LEBT emittance growth due to the space charge effects.The results of the PIC(Particle-In-Cell)mode simulation illustrate that this channel could limit the beam emittance growth and increase the beam brightness.  相似文献
