The flow field generated by unventilated two parallel jets has been investigated using LDA. The two nozzles each with an aspect ratio of 24 were separated by 4.25 nozzle widths. Results show that a recirculation zone with sub-atmospheric static pressure was bounded by the inner shear layers of the individual jets and the nozzles plate. It was shown that the two-dimensionality of the flow was greatly enhanced by the installation of side plates and that the flow was independent of Reynolds number between 8300 and 19300. Acoustic excitation introduced at the outer shear layer mode has been shown to reduce the size of the potential core, recirculation zone, merging length and combined length but enhance jet spreading, streamwise velocity decay and volume entrainment. We report flow visualisations and laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) velocity measurements in the near field of two swirling jets. The Reynolds number based on jet diameter and bulk velocity at the nozzle exit is 1.4 × 105. In the first jet, a small recirculation region is formed around the jet axis, while, in the second, the streamwise velocity remains positive and overshoots near the jet centre. In both cases, flow visualisations show that the vortex core of the jets is depleted of seeding particles. By using time-averaged distributions of the streamwise and tangential velocities measured at the nozzle outlet, the dynamics of the particles is simulated, by integrating their simplified equations of motion. The particles trajectory thus computed agrees well with that observed in the flow visualisations. Although the turbulence intensity is substantially different in the core of the two jets, its effect on the seeding concentration is localised near the edge of the core.  相似文献

The flow field of a radial wall jet created by the impingement of a round synthetic jet normal to a flat surface was characterized using hot-wire anemometry. In the synthetic wall jets the width of the outer layer was observed to increase linearly with the radial distance along the wall, while the local maximum velocity varied inversely. The synthetic wall jet exhibits self-similar behavior as distinguished by the collapse of the mean and rms velocity profiles when normalized by the outer layer scaling variables. Increasing the actuator driving amplitude at a fixed frequency (i) increased the growth rate of the outer layer, and (ii) decreased the decay rate of the local velocity maximum. The flow field of the synthetic wall jet was dominated by vortical structures associated with the actuator driving frequency, and harmonics connected with the interaction of the produced vortex structures. For the actuator conditions investigated, neither the classical laminar nor fully turbulent analytical solutions for continuous wall jets were amenable to modeling the synthetic wall jet profile due to the transitional and unsteady nature of the synthetic wall jet.  相似文献

Spatial instability waves associated with lowfrequency noise radiation at shallow polar angles in the chevron jet are investigated and are compared to the round counterpart. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations are solved to obtain the mean flow fields, which serve as the baseflow for linear stability analysis. The chevron jet has more complicated instability waves than the round jet, where three types of instability modes are identified in the vicinity of the nozzle, corresponding to radial shear, azimuthal shear, and their integrated effect of the baseflow, respectively. The most unstable frequency of all chevron modes and round modes in both jets decrease as the axial location moves downstream. Besides, the azimuthal shear effect related modes are more unstable than radial shear effect related modes at low frequencies. Compared to a round jet, a chevron jet reduces the growth rate of the most unstable modes at downstream locations. Moreover, linearized Euler equations are employed to obtain the beam pattern of pressure generated by spatially evolving instability waves at a dominant low frequency St = 0.3, and the acoustic efficiencies of these linear wavepackets are evaluated for both jets. It is found that the acoustic efficiency of linear wavepacket is able to be reduced greatly in the chevron jet, compared to the round jet.  相似文献

High-resolution, reactive Mie scattering laser-sheet visualizations, two-color digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) and thermal anemometry measurements in flows generated by equivalent coaxial circular and square jets are presented. Visualization results were obtained for three square, coaxial configurations, and a reference circular coaxial nozzle, at two Reynolds numbers of the outer jet (19,000 and 29,000) and for inner-to-outer jet velocity ratios of 0.15, 0.22, and 0.3. These indicated that the internal unmixed region diminished with decreasing velocity ratio. Strong evidence of unsteady recirculation and back-flow was observed at the end of the core of the inner jet, for the low velocity ratios. Comparisons between circular and square jet configurations indicated considerable mixing enhancement when square nozzles were used. Low-coherence, organized large-scale structure was evident from the visualizations and DPIV measurements near the origin of the inner mixing-region shear layers, and more so in the core region of the near field. These observations were confirmed by velocity spectra, which displayed peaks corresponding to a free shear-layer instability mode in the inner mixing-region shear layers, and a wake-type mode in the core region where the mean flow has a wake-like character. Although some large-scale structure was observed in the outer mixing layer during the visualizations, this was found to be incoherent on the basis of the DPIV measurements and the velocity spectra. It is noted that no axis-switching phenomena were observed in the square nozzle flows examined here. This is attributed to the absence of an organized structure in the outer shear layer, which was initially highly turbulent, and the weakly coherent nature of the organized structure observed in the inner mixing-region near field. Two methods of mechanically exciting a plane turbulent free jet are described; periodic perturbatin of the nozzle exit velocity, and forced oscillation of a small vane located in the het potential core. Hot-wire measurements obtained by conditional sampling techniques indicated that the flow fields of the two jets are substantially different although they have the same Strouhal number of 0.0032. While the mean flow development of the pulsed jet can be described adequately by a quasi-steady model, the vane-excited jet exhibits unsteady effects which depart significantly from quasi-steady approximations such as increased entrainment, amplification of excitation and non-linear effects in the form of the presence of high harmonics. The constancy of momentum flux has been examined in both the steady and unsteady jets  相似文献

The present study addresses experimental results for investigating the details of the near field flow characteristics produced in an under-expanded, dual, coaxial, swirling jet. The under-expanded swirling jet is discharged from a sonic inner nozzle. An outer annular nozzle produces co- and counter-swirling streams relative to the inner primary swirling jet. The interaction between both the outer annular swirling stream and inner under-expanded swirling jet is quantified by impact and static pressure measurements, and visualized by using the shadowgraph method. Experiments are performed for several different pressure ratios. The results show that the outer secondary co-swirling jet significantly changes the structure of the inner under-expanded swirling jet, such as the shock structures and the recirculation region generated at the jet axis. The effect of the outer secondary stream on the major structures of the inner primary swirling jet is strongly dependent on the pressure ratio of the inner swirling jet, regardless of the swirl direction of the outer stream.Received: 17 May 2004, Accepted: 27 September 2004, Published online: 26 November 2004[/PUBLISHED]H.D. Measurements of mean velocity components, mean flow direction, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stress were made with a split film probe of hot wire anemometer to investigate the flow field generated by two identical jets of air issuing from plane parallel nozzles in a common end wall and mixing with the ambient room air. Due to the sensitivity of the split film probe to the flow direction, the reverse flow in the converging region was detected by the split film probe and observed by flow visualization. The mean velocity approaches self-preservation in both the converging and the combined regions, while the turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stress approach self-preservation in the combined region only. The trajectory of the maximum velocity is almost unchanged by variance of nozzle spacing in the converging region. The distance of the merging point from the nozzle exit increases linearly with nozzle spacing. The spread of the converging jet increases more rapidly than that of the combined jet.  相似文献

An experimental study of particle velocities in micro-abrasive jets by using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique is presented. It has been found that the particle jet flow has a nearly linear expansion downstream. The particle velocities increase with air pressure, and the increasing rate increases with nozzle diameter within the range considered. The instantaneous velocity profile of the particle flow field in terms of the particle velocity distribution along the axial and radial directions of the jets is discussed. For the axial profile in the jet centerline downstream, there exists an extended acceleration stage, a transition stage, and a deceleration stage. For the radial velocity profiles, a relatively flat shape is observed at a jet cross-section near the nozzle exit. Mathematical models for the particle velocities in the air jet are then developed. It is shown that the results from the models agree well with experimental data in both the variation trend and magnitude.  相似文献

An experimental study on inclined coaxial jets using laser-induced fluorescence and particle image velocimetry is presented here. The Reynolds numbers of the inner primary jet and outer secondary jet were Re = 2,500 and between Re = 500 and 2,000 (based on gap size), respectively, which corresponded to secondary-to-primary jet velocity ratios (VR) of VR = 0.5–2.0. The secondary-to-primary jet area ratio was 2.25, and 45° and 60° incline-angles were studied. Flow visualizations show that relatively independent inclined primary and secondary jet vortex roll-ups were formed at VR = 0.5. At VR = 1.0, regular pairings and mergings between primary and secondary jet vortex roll-ups led to large-scale entrainment of secondary jet and ambient fluids into the primary jet column and conferred a “serpentile”-shaped outline upon it. While the “serpentile”-shaped outline continued to exist at VR = 2.0, it was a result of stronger secondary jet inner vortex roll-ups which “pinched” the primary jet column regularly. These flow behaviours are observed to intensify with an increase in the incline-angle used. Velocity measurements demonstrate that inclined coaxial nozzles promoted vectoring of the primary jet momentum towards the longer nozzle lengths when velocity-ratio and/or incline-angle were increased. Lastly, peak velocity and higher turbulence intensity levels due to augmented vortical interactions are also detected along shorter nozzle lengths.  相似文献

A water-air impinging jets atomizer is investigated in this study, which consists of flow visualization using high speed photography and mean droplet size and velocity distribution measurements of the spray using Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA). Topological structures and break up details of the generated spray in the far and near fields are presented with and without air jet and for an impinging angle of 90°. Spray angle increases with the water jet velocity, air flow rate and impinging angle. PDA results indicate that droplet size is smallest in the spray center, with minimum value of Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of 50 µm at the air flow rate of Qm = 13.50 g/min. SMD of droplets increases towards the spray outer region gradually to about 120 µm. The mean droplet velocity component W along the air-jet axis is highest in the spray center and decreases gradually with increasing distance from the spray center. SMD normalized by the air nozzle diameter is found firstly to decrease with gas-to-liquid mass ratio (GLR) and air-to-liquid momentum ratio (ALMR) and then remain almost constant. Its increasing with aerodynamic Weber number indicates an exponential variation. The study sheds light on the performance of water-air impinging jets atomizers providing useful information for future CFD simulation works.  相似文献

The behavior of a non-buoyant circular water jet discharged from a contraction nozzle was experimentally investigated. In this experiment, the Reynolds number of the jet, based on the mean velocity results obtained by particle image velocimetry (PIV), ranged from 177 to 5,142. From the experimental results, we found that the cross-sectional profile of the axial velocity for a laminar flow near the nozzle did not show a top-hat distribution, whereas the profiles with Reynolds number higher than 437 were almost top-hat. The length of the zone of flow establishment (ZFE) was found to decrease with increasing Reynolds number. The measured centerline velocity decayed more rapidly and, consequently, approached the theoretical equation earlier near the nozzle as the Reynolds number increased. The decay constant for the centerline velocity of the turbulent cases was relatively lower than that discovered in theory. It is assumed that this probably resulted from the use of the contraction nozzle. Verifying the similarity of the lateral velocity profiles demonstrated that the Gaussian curve was properly approximated only for the turbulent jets and not for the laminar or transitional flows. The jet half width seldom grew for the laminar or transitional flows, whereas it grew with increasing axial distance for the turbulent flows. The spreading rates for the turbulent flows gradually decreased with increasing Reynolds number. The normalized turbulence intensity along the jet centerline increased more rapidly with the axial distance as the Reynolds number increased, and tended to the constant values proposed by previous investigators. The Reynolds shear stress levels were also found to increase as the Reynolds number increased for the turbulent jets.

The results of a numerical and experimental investigation of the interaction between harmonic disturbances and a turbulent jet are presented. On the basis of large eddy simulation it is established that the narrow-band noise of a supersonic jet considerably increases, when the forcing amplitude amounts to thousandths and more of the total pressure of the flow within the nozzle. An analysis of the results of a laboratory experiment on the measurement of the longitudinal velocity spectra in the core of a low-velocity jet shows that the acoustic disturbances generated by a fan inside the nozzle lead to the generation of intense tonal hydrodynamic disturbances in the low-velocity jet.  相似文献

The objective of the present work is to predict compressible swirl flow in the nozzle of air‐jet spinning using the realizable k–ε turbulence model and discuss the effect of the nozzle pressure. The periodic change of flow patterns can be observed. The recirculation zone near the wall of the injectors upstream increases in size and moves gradually upstream, whereas the vortex breakdown in the injector downstream shifts slowly towards the nozzle outlet during the whole period. A low axial velocity in the core region moves gradually away from the centerline, and the magnitude of the center reverse flow and the area occupied by it increase with axial distance due to the vortex breakdown. From the tangential velocity profile, there is a very small free‐vortex zone. With increasing nozzle pressure, the velocity increases and the location of vortex breakdown is moved slightly downward. However, the increase in the velocity tends to decline at nozzle pressure up to a high level. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The two dimensional impinging circular twin-jet flow with no-cross flow is studied numerically and experimentally. The theoretical predications are carried out through numerical procedure based on finite volume method to solve the governing mass, momentum, turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate. The parameters studied were jet Reynolds number (9.5 × 104  Re  22.4 × 104), nozzle to plate spacing (3  h/d  12), nozzle to nozzle centerline spacing (l/d = 3, 5 and 8) and jet angle (0°  θ  20°). It is concluded that the stagnation primary point moves away in the radial main flow direction by increasing the jet angle. This shift becomes stronger by increasing the nozzle to nozzle centerline spacing (l/d). A secondary stagnation point is set up between two jets. The value of pressure at this point decreases by decreasing Reynolds number and/or increasing the jet angle.

The sub atmospheric region occurs on the impingement plate. It increases strongly by increasing Reynolds number and decreases as the jet angle and/or a nozzle to plate spacing increases. The spreading of jet decreases by increasing nozzle to plate spacing. The intensity of re-circulation zone between two jets decreases by increasing of h/d and jet angle. The increase of turbulence kinetic energy occurs within high gradient velocity.  相似文献

The effect of vortex generators, in the form of small tabs projecting into the flow at the nozzle exit, aided by secondary tabs on either side, on the mixing characteristics of an axisymmetric jet at Mach number 1.7 is investigated. Experimental studies on the basic features of the jet from a nozzle with secondary tabs are conducted to assess the free jet characteristics as well as the momentum and thermal mixing behavior. The secondary tabs were found to increase the jet spread and distort the jet cross-section and were found to cause substantial enhancement of mixing of supersonic jets. Jet structure is observed using flow-visualization techniques. LLS images are employed to obtain cross-sectional views of the jet with the introduction of secondary tabs. The ability of secondary tabs to eliminate the screech noise of the supersonic jet is also observed. Received: 3 February 2000/Accepted: 8 February 2001  相似文献

An optical deflectometry system is used to provide unique space–time correlation measurements at two positions separated by varying axial distances within a high-speed jet shear layer. The measurements were made for both pure air and for helium/air mixture jets at Mach numbers M=0.9 and M=1.5. The jets issue from round nozzles and the sensing volumes at the two measurement positions consist of small light filaments along spanwise lines that are tangential to the annular jet shear layer. Applying this technique to obtain measurements detailing the level of correlation, spectral content, and convection velocity for jet flows in these flow regimes near the end of the potential core is particularly important in the understanding and prediction of jet noise. Measurements near the end of the potential core along the jet lip line exhibit distinct cross-correlation curves for the pure air jet cases. However, helium/air mixture jets display much lower levels of correlation and little evidence of large-scale structure in the measured spectra. It is believed that the thick visual density gradients dominated by smaller scales throughout the shear layer of the helium/air mixture jets effectively mask the large-scale structure, thus, reflecting a limitation of this optical deflectometer. Finally, a decrease in normalized convection velocity with helium addition is observed.  相似文献

Experimental results on the shock structure of dual co-axial jets are presented. The effects of the geometric parameters of the inner nozzle, jet static pressure ratio (ratio of the exit plane static pressures of the inner and outer nozzles) and the ratio of outer to inner nozzle throat area on the shock structure were studied. A superimposed outer and inner jet structure was observed in the schlieren photographs. The inner flow is compressed by the outer flow resulting in the formation of a Mach disc and an exit shock. A parameter incorporating the effect of Mach number of the inner nozzle and jet static pressure ratio was found to correlate the observations regarding the Mach disc location.  相似文献
