We reveal the existence of stable dissipative soliton complexes with curvilinear motion of their center of mass. This type of motion results from the field distribution asymmetry and is well pronounced for asymmetric complexes of laser solitons with strong coupling. We present results of numerical simulations of such complexes in a model of wide-aperture lasers or laser amplifiers with saturable gain and absorption. The complex consists of a pair of strongly coupled vortex solitons weakly coupled with a number of other vortex solitons. Similar complexes are expected to exist in different spatially distributed nonlinear dissipative systems, including schemes with discrete dissipative solitons.  相似文献

We discover that a spatially localized gain supports stable vortex solitons in media with cubic nonlinearity and two-photon absorption. The interplay between nonlinear losses and gain in amplifying rings results in the suppression of otherwise ubiquitous azimuthal modulation instabilities of radially symmetric vortex solitons. We find that the topology of the gain profile imposes restrictions on the maximal possible charge of vortex solitons. Symmetry breaking occurs at high gain levels, resulting in the formation of necklace vortex solitons composed of asymmetric bright spots.  相似文献

We present a study of the effect of finite relaxation rates of media on the stability of dissipative solitons in single-mode fibers with longitudinal Bragg grating and nonlinear gain created by one active medium, and absorption created by one passive medium that gives the stability to solitons. The system of Maxwell–Bloch equations for this model is introduced. Based on the analysis of this system, it is shown that dissipative Bragg solitons are stable in the case when the active medium has greater relaxation rates than the passive medium.  相似文献

We show that localized gain supports the existence of dissipative vortex solitons in periodic Kerr media with strong two-photon absorption. Vortex solitons exist in both focusing and defocusing media, with their propagation constants emerging from semi-infinite or finite gaps in the lattice spectrum. Coincidence of the discrete rotational symmetries of the gain landscape and refractive index distribution is a necessary condition for exciting vortex solitons, which otherwise transform into stable dissipative multipoles.  相似文献

We present a comparative review of two classes of optical solitons—conservative and dissipative solitons—propagating in single-mode optical fibers in which refractive-index gratings are induced such that their period is comparable with the radiation wavelength. Fibers that have the Kerr nonlinearity and negligibly small losses and that do not gain radiation (conservative system) are described by traditional equations of the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes, and effects caused by the nonlinearity of the medium, such as nonlinear switching, optical bistability, and formation of conservative Bragg solitons are considered. It is shown that the passage beyond the scope of the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes makes it possible to describe new important effects, including localization of soliton centers near maxima of the refractive-index grating. Bright and dark conservative solitons are demonstrated, which are formed when the Kerr nonlinearity is replaced by the nonlinearity of two-level atomic systems. The properties of conservative solitons in resonance semiconductor Bragg structures with quantum wells are considered. Results of experimental studies of nonlinear effects in fibers with Bragg gratings are presented. For an active single-mode fiber with a Bragg refractive-index grating and nonlinear gain and absorption, dissipative solitons are described using the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes and inertialess nonlinearity. It is shown that the dissipative factors qualitatively change the properties of solitons compared to the conservative case. Using the Maxwell-Bloch equations, it is demonstrated that the ratio between the gain and absorption relaxation times significantly affects the stability of localized structures. The interaction of dissipative optical Bragg solitons is described. It is shown that, beyond the scope of the approximation of slowly varying amplitudes, the average velocity of propagating dissipative Bragg solitons acquires only discrete values, and formation of pairs of solitons with two values of the phase difference becomes possible. For a birefringent fiber, dissipative vector optical Bragg solitons are demonstrated.  相似文献

A family of exact temporal solitary-wave solutions (dissipative solitons) to the equations governing second-harmonic generation in quadratically nonlinear optical waveguides, in the presence of linear bandwidth-limited gain at the fundamental harmonic and linear loss at the second harmonic, is found, and the existence domain for the solutions is delineated. Direct numerical simulations of the solitons demonstrate that, as well as the classical pulse solutions to the cubic Ginzburg-Landau equation, the dissipative solitons can propagate robustly over a considerable distance before the model's intrinsic instability leads to onset of "turbulence." Two-soliton bound states are also predicted and then found in the direct simulations. We estimate real values of the physical parameters necessary for the existence of the solitons predicted, and conclude that they can be observed experimentally. A promising application for the solitons is their use in closed-loop cavities.  相似文献

We investigate the stability and collision dynamics of dissipative matter-wave solitons formed in a quasi-onedimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with linear gain and three-body recombination loss perturbed by a weak optical lattice. It is shown that the linear gain can modify the stability of the single dissipative soliton moving in the optical lattice. The collision dynamics of two individual dissipative matter-wave solitons explicitly depend on the linear gain parameter, and they display different dynamical behaviors in both the in-phase and out-of-phase interaction regimes.  相似文献

We address vortex solitons supported by optical lattices featuring modulation of both the linear and nonlinear refractive indices. We find that when the modulation is out of phase the competition between both effects results in remarkable shape transformations of the solitons that profoundly affect their properties and stability. Nonlinear refractive index modulation is found to impose restrictions on the maximal power of off-site solitons, which are shown to be stable only below a maximum nonlinearity modulation depth.  相似文献

A comparative theoretical analysis of properties of conservative and dissipative optical solitons in media with a periodic spatial modulation of optical characteristics is performed. It is shown that, in the case of modulation in the longitudinal (with respect to the axis of predominant propagation) direction, the mechanism of decay of conservative solitons because of the delocalization of their Fourier harmonics takes place, whereas, for dissipative solitons, this mechanism is absent. In the case of modulation in the transverse direction, the presence of discrete dissipative solitons in a set of optical fibers with nonlinear (saturable) amplification and absorption is shown, which, to a considerable extent, are similar to conservative discrete solitons.  相似文献

Reverse saturable absorption is essential for the realization of dissipative solitons. In this paper, we introduce reverse saturable absorption by using nonlinear multimode interference (NL-MMI), for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, and obtain a stable dissipative soliton operation. By adjusting the coupling efficiency from multimode fiber to single mode fiber, the absorption properties of NL-MMI can be switched between saturation and reverse saturation. The dissipative soliton can be obtained with pulse width of 975 fs in the experiment, the 3-dB bandwidth at 1555 nm is 16 nm, and the maximum output power is 11.48 mW. The nonlinear absorption optical modulation and high damage threshold characteristics of the NL-MMI based ultrafast optical switch provide a new idea for realizing dissipative solitons.  相似文献

A brief overview of recent theoretical results in the area of three-dimensional dissipative optical solitons is given. A systematic analysis demonstrates the existence and stability of both fundamental (spinless) and spinning three-dimensional dissipative solitons in both normal and anomalous group-velocity regimes. Direct numerical simulations of the evolution of stationary solitons of the three-dimensional cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation show full agreement with the predictions based on computation of the instability eigenvalues from the linearized equations for small perturbations. It is shown that the diffusivity in the transverse plane is necessary for the stability of vortex solitons against azimuthal perturbations, while fundamental (zero-vorticity) solitons may be stable in the absence of diffusivity. It has also been found that, at values of the nonlinear gain above the upper border of the soliton existence domain, the three-dimensional dissipative solitons either develop intrinsic pulsations or start to expand in the temporal (longitudinal) direction keeping their structure in the transverse spatial plane. In this paper, we consider the existence, stability and dynamical evolution of dark vortex states in the two-dimensional defocusing discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model, a model of interest both to atomic physics and to nonlinear optics. Our considerations are chiefly based on initializing such vortex configurations at the anti-continuum limit of zero coupling between adjacent sites, and continuing them to finite values of the coupling. Systematic tools are developed for such continuations based on amplitude-phase decompositions and explicit solvability conditions enforcing the vortex phase structure. Regarding the linear stability of such nonlinear waves, we find that in a way reminiscent of their 1d analogs, i.e., of discrete dark solitons, the discrete defocusing vortices become unstable past a critical coupling strength and, subsequently feature a cascade of alternating stabilization-destabilization windows for any finite lattice. Although the results are mainly geared towards the uniform case, we also consider the effect of harmonic trapping potentials often present in experimental atomic physics settings.  相似文献

A new class of clusters of three-dimensional dissipative inphase-and antiphase-coupled solitons is numerically found in a laser system with a saturable absorber. The orientation of clusters and their motion depend on the symmetry of spatiotemporal characteristic of the system and on the symmetry of arrangement of solitons in the cluster. An example of a nonplanar (spiral-like) trajectory of the center of a seven-soliton cluster possessing no symmetry elements is demonstrated. Collisions of moving soliton clusters, including those accompanied by exchange of solitons between clusters, are studied. Experimentally, three-dimensional dissipative optical solitons can be realized in a laser amplifier with a saturable absorber or in an extended resonator filled with a medium with nonlinear gain and absorption.  相似文献

The nonlinear lattice — a new and nonlinear class of periodic potentials — was recently introduced to generate various nonlinear localized modes. Several attempts failed to stabilize two-dimensional (2D) solitons against their intrinsic critical collapse in Kerr media. Here, we provide a possibility for supporting 2D matter-wave solitons and vortices in an extended setting — the cubic and quintic model — by introducing another nonlinear lattice whose period is controllable and can be different from its cubic counterpart, to its quintic nonlinearity, therefore making a fully “nonlinear quasi-crystal”.A variational approximation based on Gaussian ansatz is developed for the fundamental solitons and in particular, their stability exactly follows the inverted Vakhitov–Kolokolov stability criterion, whereas the vortex solitons are only studied by means of numerical methods. Stability regions for two types of localized mode — the fundamental and vortex solitons — are provided. A noteworthy feature of the localized solutions is that the vortex solitons are stable only when the period of the quintic nonlinear lattice is the same as the cubic one or when the quintic nonlinearity is constant, while the stable fundamental solitons can be created under looser conditions. Our physical setting (cubic-quintic model) is in the framework of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation or nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the predicted localized modes thus may be implemented in Bose–Einstein condensates and nonlinear optical media with tunable cubic and quintic nonlinearities.  相似文献

We investigate the existence and stability of different families of spatial solitons in optical waveguide arrays whose amplitudes obey a disordered distribution. The competition between focusing nonlinearity and linearly disordered refractive index modulation results in the formation of spatial localized nonlinear states. Solitons originating from Anderson modes with few nodes are robust during propagation. While multi-peaked solitons with in-phase neighboring components are completely unstable, multipole-mode solitons whose neighboring components are out-of-phase can propagate stably in wide parameter regions provided that their power exceeds a critical value. Our findings, thus, provide the first example of stable higher-order nonlinear states in disordered systems.  相似文献

We show that ringlike localized gain landscapes imprinted in focusing cubic (Kerr) nonlinear media with strong two-photon absorption support new types of stable higher-order vortex solitons containing multiple phase singularities nested inside a single core. The phase singularities are found to rotate around the center of the gain landscape, with the rotation period being determined by the strength of the gain and the nonlinear absorption.  相似文献

Stable ring-profile vortex solitons in bessel optical lattices   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Stable ring-profile vortex solitons, featuring a bright shape, appear to be very rare in nature. However, here we show that they exist and can be made dynamically stable in defocusing cubic nonlinear media with an imprinted Bessel optical lattice. We find the families of vortex solitons and reveal their salient properties, including the conditions required for their stability. We show that the higher the soliton topological charge, the deeper the lattice modulation necessary for stabilization.  相似文献

Conditions for the existence of completely localized three-dimensional dissipative laser solitons—“laser bullets” in a medium with nonlinear amplification and absorption and frequency dispersion are studied. Solitons with different profiles are considered and the regions of their stable existence are found. The stability of spherical solitons is studied as a function of frequency mismatch of amplification and absorption lines by the method of direct numerical simulation.  相似文献
