We report the synthesis of platinum telluride nanoparticles (Pt(3)Te(4) NPs) in the solution phase at room temperature using a template-assisted method. The dendrimeric aggregates formed are composed of several small units of Pt(3)Te(4) NPs of ~4 nm diameter. Tellurium nanowires (Te NWs) are used as the template and the reducing agent in the growth of NPs which occurs due to the galvanic replacement reaction between Te NWs and PtCl(6)(2-). Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the dispersed Pt(3)Te(4) NPs was studied using crystal violet (CV) as the analyte. SERS sensitivity up to 10(-8) M of CV was observed. The Raman enhancement factor (EF) of adsorbed CV on NP aggregates was calculated to be 1.74 × 10(5). The catalytic ability of the as-synthesized Pt(3)Te(4) NPs for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) was studied.

The synthesis and characterization of the first air-stable tellurium-containing ligand-protected gold nanoparticles (NPs) are reported. Although the synthesis largely followed the well-known Brust two-phase approach, the starting ligand was dioctyl ditelluride rather than alkanetellurol, which is an analogue of the widely used alkanethiol. Dioctyl ditelluride was used because alkanetellurol is unstable. The 1H and 13C NMR spectra, as well as infrared spectra (IR) of the formed Au NPs, indicated that the Te-Te bond in the starting ligand was broken but the octyl group was intact. This was further corroborated by the solid-state 125Te NMR spectrum that displayed a very broad and significantly downfield-shifted peak, indicating that tellurium was directly bound to the Au core. Furthermore, the O 1s and Te 3d XPS spectra of the Au NPs indicated that the capping ligands were octanetelluroxide. An average particle size of 2.7 nm diameter as measured by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) corresponded to an Au607 core. A two-step weight loss of approximately 22.2% in total was observed in the thermogravimetric analysis, which indicated about 53% ligand monolayer coverage (i.e., Au607(Te(=O)C8H17)133). Additionally, dioctyl ditelluride demonstrated an intriguing reductive power that led to a more sophisticated chemistry of forming the air-stable octanetelluroxide-protected gold NPs. It has been found that (1) when the ratio of Au to Te was about 1.5 a colorless intermediate state similar to Au(I)-SR (the intermediate state widely accepted in the synthesis of thiolate-protected Au NPs) could be obtained and (2) this kind of intermediate state played a key role in the formation of stable Au NPs.

Here we describe the synthesis of Ag nanorods (NRs) (aspect ratio <20) and nanowires (NWs) (aspect ratio > or =20) directly on surfaces by seed-mediated growth. The procedure involves attaching gold seed nanoparticles (Au NPs) to 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS)-functionalized silicon or glass surfaces and growing them into NRs/NWs by placing the substrates into a solution containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), silver nitrate, and ascorbic acid with the pH ranging from 7 to 12. Under our conditions, Ag NRs/NWs grow optimally at pH 10.6 with a 3% yield, where spherical, triangular, and hexagonal nanostructures represent the other byproducts. The length of Ag NRs/NWs ranges from 50 nm to more than 10 microm, the aspect ratio (AR) ranges from 1.4 to >300, and the average diameter is approximately 35 nm. Approximately 40% of the 1D structures are NRs, and 60% are NWs as defined by their ARs. We also report the alignment of Ag NRs/NWs directly on surfaces by growing the structures on amine-functionalized Si(100) surfaces after an amidation reaction with acetic acid and a method to improve the percentage of Ag NRs/NWs on the surface by removing structures of other shapes with adhesive tape. Surface-grown Ag NRs/NWs also react with salts of palladium, platinum, and gold via galvanic exchange reactions to form high-surface-area 1D structures of the corresponding metal. The combination of the seed-mediated growth of Ag on Au NRs followed by the galvanic exchange of Ag with Pd leads to interesting core/shell NRs grown directly on surfaces. We used scanning electron microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize the surface-grown nanostructures.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used for extra-cellular biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Consequently, Au NPs were formed due to reduction of gold ion by bacterial cell supernatant of P. aeruginosa ATCC 90271, P. aeruginosa (2) and P. aeruginosa (1). The UV-vis and fluorescence spectra of the bacterial as well as chemical prepared Au NPs were recorded. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrograph showed the formation of well-dispersed gold nanoparticles in the range of 15-30 nm. The process of reduction being extra-cellular and may lead to the development of an easy bioprocess for synthesis of Au NPs.

The efficiency of the glutathione monolayer-protected gold nanocluster (NC) Au(25) (1.2 nm metal core diameter (d)) in quenching the emission of dyes intercalated into DNA is compared to that of 2 and 4 nm gold nanoparticles (NPs). In all cases, the DNA/dye moieties and the gold particles are not covalently attached but rather form non-covalent ground state complexes. Under these conditions, steady-state measurements reveal that the quenching efficiency of Au(25) is a factor of 10 lower than that of plasmonic 4 nm gold NPs but comparable to that of 2 nm particles which do not show a distinct plasmon band. Nonetheless, significant emission quenching is observed even at very low (nM) concentrations of Au(25). The quenching efficiency of the 4 nm NPs is significantly higher for dyes emitting near the wavelength of the plasmon peak whereas that of the 2 nm gold NPs is well described by the nano-surface energy transfer (NSET) model proposed by the Strouse group (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 127, 3115 2005). Interestingly, for Au(25) the maximum quenching efficiency occurs for dyes emitting in the same wavelength range as that of the 2 and 4 nm NPs (490-560 nm), where it shows no discrete absorption features, rather than for wavelengths coincident with its HOMO-LUMO, intra-band or inter-band transitions. The fluorescence quenching properties of Au(25) NCs are therefore found to be distinct from those of larger NCs and NPs but do not appear to conform to theoretical predictions advanced thus far.

A Pep-1 peptide-modified liposomal (Pep1-Lipo) carrier system was investigated to increase the intracellular delivery of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Au NPs with a mean diameter of 13 nm were successfully encapsulated into the inner aqueous compartment of the novel carrier using an ethanol injection technique, reserving the distinctive optical characteristics of the surface plasmon resonance peak around 530 nm. The Au NP-loaded liposomal carrier was physically characterized as 150-170 nm in size and 45 mV in zeta potential. Dark field microscopic observation demonstrated that in vitro cellular association and/or translocation of the nanoprobes into the cells was increased by Pep1-Lipo carriers compared to bare Au NPs. In conclusion, this novel liposomal formulation is a promising platform for the intracellular delivery of metallic nanoprobes including Au NPs.

Cu(2)O-Au nanocomposites (NCs) with tunable coverage of Au were prepared by a facile method of mixing gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with copper(I) oxide nanowires (Cu(2)O NWs) in various ratios. These Cu(2)O-Au NCs display tunable optical properties, and their photocatalytic properties were dependent on the coverage density of Au NPs. The photocatalytic activity of Cu(2)O-Au NCs was examined by photodegradation of methylene blue. The presence of Au NPs enhanced the photodegradation efficiency of Cu(2)O NCs. The photocatalytic efficiency of Cu(2)O-Au NCs initially increased with the increasing coverage density of Au NPs and then decreased as the surface of Cu(2)O became densely covered by Au NPs. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency was ascribed to enhanced light absorption (by the surface plasmon resonance) and the electron sink effect of the Au NPs.

A simple spectrophotocolorimetric method devoted to the measurement of gold content in nanoparticles (NPs) was developed. It includes two steps: (i) metal gold NPs (Au NPs) are oxidized into the AuCl4 anion using a 5 × 10−2 M HCl-1.5 × 10−2 M NaCl-7 × 10−4 M Br2 solution, next (ii) AuCl4 concentration is measured using a spectrophotometric assay based on the reaction of AuCl4 with the cationic form of Rhodamine B to give a violet ion pair complex. This latter is extracted with diisopropyl ether and the absorbance of the organic complex is measured at 565 nm. The method is linear in the range 6-29 μM of AuCl4 with a limit of detection of 4.5 μM.The analytical method was optimized with respect of bromine excess to obtain complete Au NPs oxidation. The method was applied to two types of Au NPs currently under investigation: citrate-stabilized Au NPs and Au NPs capped with dihydrolipoic acid (Au@DHLA). Both the gold content of Au NPs and the concentration of NPs (using NP diameter measured by transmission electron microscopy) have been calculated.

Straight ultrathin Au nanowires (NWs) with diameters less than 2 nm were synthesized using the lamellar structure of C18AA in an organogel and its selective adsorption for specific gold surfaces. In addition, the potential to form a bilayer structure with interdigitated hydrocarbon chains enabled the production of water-dispersible Au NWs without morphological change.

Networks of pristine single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) grown by catalysed chemical vapour deposition (cCVD) on an insulating surface and arranged in an ultramicroelectrode (UME) format are insensitive to the electro-oxidation of hydrazine (HZ) in aqueous solution, indicating a negligible metallic nanoparticle content. Sensitisation of the network towards HZ oxidation is promoted by the deliberate and controlled electrodeposition of "naked" gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs). By controlling the deposition conditions (potential, time) it is possible to control the size and spacing of the Au NPs on the underlying SWNT network. Two different cases are considered: Au NPs at a number density of 250 ± 13 NPs μm(-2) and height 24 nm ± 5 (effective surface coverage, θ = 92%) and (ii) Au NPs of number density ~ 22 ± 3 NPs μm(-2) and height 43 nm ± 8 nm (θ = 35%). For both morphologies the HZ oxidation half-wave potential (E(1/2)) is shifted significantly negative by ca. 200 mV, compared to a gold disc UME of the same geometric area, indicating significantly more facile electron transfer kinetics. E(1/2) for HZ oxidation for the higher density Au NP-SWNT structure is shifted slightly more negative (by ~25 mV) than E(1/2) for the lower density Au NP electrode. This is attributed to the lower flux of HZ at NPs in the higher number density arrangement (smaller kinetic demand). Importantly, using this approach, the calculated HZ oxidation current density sensitivities for the Au NP-SWNT electrodes reported here are higher than for many other metal NP functionalised carbon nanotube electrodes.

Colloidal Au/Ag multilayer films were prepared by alternate assembly of Au nanoparticles with a size of 5 +/- 1.2 nm and Ag nanoparticles with a size of 10 +/- 2.4 nm by using 1,5-pentanedithiol as cross-linker. Nanoporous gold films with a ligament size of 26.7 +/- 4.6 nm were then prepared by selective dissolution of sacrificial templates of silver particles in colloidal Au/Ag multilayers. The complete dissolution of Ag particles in colloidal Au/Ag multilayers in a mixture solution of 3.0 mM HAuCl(4) and 3 M NaCl took place at room temperature without damage of the colloidal Au film. This method to prepare nanoporous gold films was further extended to the preparation of nanoporous gold nanotubes by depositing colloidal Au/Ag film on the inner wall of anodic aluminum oxides (AAO) followed by dissolution of colloidal Ag and removal of AAO templates.

Stable, water-soluble gold nanoparticles, Au NPs, having an average diameter of ca. 4 nm, were prepared using place exchange reactions. The nanoparticles, capped with novel zwitterionic disulfide ligands, showed remarkable stability in saline media with salt concentrations as high as 3.0 M. Similarly, the Au NPs did not precipitate out of solution when charged polyelectrolytes or biopolymers were added, indicating the absence of nonspecific interactions. The stability and degree of association of Au NPs were characterized using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, quasi-elastic light scattering, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

In this study, the galvanic displacement reaction between silver and AuCl4 was carried out to synthesize a series of silver nanowire (Ag NW) @ gold nanoparticle (Au NP) hybrid nanowires. The influence of Ag NW @ Au NP hybrid nanowires on the fluorescence properties of the poly (3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was investigated. The particle sizes of Au NPs on the hybrid nanowires could be adjusted by varying the reaction time and the concentration of the HAuCl4 solution. Furthermore, steady‐state fluorescence measurements showed that the fluorescence intensity of the P3HT films was higher on various Ag NW @ Au NP hybrid nanowires compared to that on a bare silicon substrate. This was due to the increase in the intensity of electromagnetic field by the localized surface plasmon resonances of Au NPs and surface plasmon polaritons of Ag NWs from the hybrid nanowires. The results were further confirmed by the Raman spectra of the P3HT films on different substrates.

Here we describe a very efficient method to produce well-defined amphiphilic gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with an equal number of hydrophobic and hydrophilic arms which are distributed along the surface of a 2-nm gold core in an alternating fashion. The strategy involves direct coupling of V-shaped block copolymer amphiphile 2 with a carboxylic group at its junction point to mercaptophenol-terminated Au NPs. The reaction proceeds under mild esterification conditions and yields the product with a molecular weight of 40 kDa, high grafting density (2.9 chains/nm2), and extremely low polydispersity (1.07). The big advantage of this approach is the opportunity to avoid the use of expensive and often inaccessible polymeric thiols. The method described here is applicable to any carboxyl-terminated molecules and can be used for the preparation of complex, yet well-defined, macromolecular hybrid structures such as 1 (Au(PB-PEG)n). The new product, which was characterized by a combination of SEC, NMR, UV-vis, DLS, and TEM, represents a unique example of gold nanoparticles soluble in any conventional solvent.

In the present work, 2.4 nm gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are uniformly dispersed on mesoporous titania thin films which are structurally tuned by controlling the calcination temperature. The gold content of the catalyst is as high as 27.8 wt %. To our knowledge, such a high loading of Au NPs with good dispersity has not been reported until now. Furthermore, the reaction rate of the gold particles is enhanced by one order of magnitude when supported on mesoporous titania compared to non‐porous titania. This significant improvement can be explained by an increase in the diffusivity of the substrate due to the presence of mesopores, the resistance to agglomeration, and improved oxygen activation.

The preparation and the properties of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) protected by perfluorinated amphiphiles are described. The thiols were devised to form a perfluorinated region close to the gold surface and to have a hydrophilic portion in contact with the bulk solvent to impart solubility in water. The monolayer protected clusters were prepared, in an homogeneous phase using sodium thiolates because of the low nucleophilicity of the alpha-perfluorinated thiols, and fully characterized with (1)H, (19)F NMR spectrometry, IR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Au NPs with core diameters ranging from 1.6 to 2.9 nm, depending on the reaction conditions, were obtained. Water-soluble NPs (MPC-F8-PEGs) were obtained with the thiol HS-F8-PEG ending with a short poly(ethylene glycol) unit (PEG-OMe 550), whereas thiols with shorter PEG chains give rise to NPs insoluble in water. MPC-F8-PEGs undergo an exchange reaction with amphiphilic alkyl thiols. ESR investigations, using a hydrophobic radical probe, indicate that the MPC-F8-PEG monolayer shows a greater hydrophobicity compared to the analogous hydrogenated monolayer.

As shown in the literature, gold nanoparticles (NPs) were popularly used in the fields of catalyst and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In this work, size-controllable Au NPs coated on TiO(2) are synthesized by adjusting the pH of solutions based on sonoelectrochemical methods. The size-controlled Au NPs on TiO(2), ranging from 2 to 80 nm in diameter, can be obtained by varying the pH of solutions from 3 to 7 and placing the sample for 3 h before sonoelectrochemical reductions. The optimal particle sizes of Au NPs on TiO(2) to obtain the strongest SERS effects under an irradiation of 785 nm for probe molecules of adsorbed Rhodamine 6G (R6G) and deposited polypyrrole (PPy) are all ca. 60 nm.

Nanostructures with concave surfaces are not common, and their synthesis is still challenging. In this paper, we have successfully synthesized two kinds of five-fold-twinned Au decahedra and dodecagonal plates by changing the reaction conditions. 40 high-index {221} facets were observed in the concave decahedron. The truncated decahedral gold nanocrystals (NCs) with a large size of 250-350 nm were obtained for the first time, which breaks the assumption that the truncated five-fold-twinned Au nanoparticles (NPs) can only be obtained with a size below 5 nm. The growth mechanism and the evolution process of the gold nanostructures were discussed. This work provides a facile way to synthesize concave decahedra, truncated decahedra and dodecagonal plates with controlled nanostructures.
