Spectral-domain intermodal interference is analysed theoretically at the output of a few-mode optical fibre alone and at the output of the optical fibre in a tandem configuration with a Michelson interferometer. The theoretical analysis is performed under general measurement conditions when a light source of a given spectral bandwidth and a spectrometer of a given spectral bandpass are considered and when first- and second-order intermodal dispersion effects in the optical fibre are taken into account. Thus, the effect of a variable spectral bandpass of a low-resolution spectrometer on the spectral fringe visibility functions for a two-mode optical fibre of known intermodal dispersion is specified.  相似文献

Dispersion equalisation of the modes of cylindrically symmetric few-mode optical fibres is investigated using equivalent planar waveguide representations. A numerical analysis based on the Characteristic Matrix Method has identified what we believe to be the first practical three-mode fibre with zero intermodal dispersion. This implies that the group velocities of each of the fibre??s three linearly polarized modes are equivalent. Dispersion equalisation is also confirmed in a power-law profile, as well as a novel two-mode fibre which operates within the third telecommunications windows. These few-mode fibres could potentially be used for long-haul telecommunications data links. In the case where the modes are not distinguished and are equally excited, the few-mode fibres could be used as larger core-radius alternatives to traditional single-mode fibres. If the modes are distinguished, each mode could in theory be considered an independent data channel. All modal data channels would be equivalent for such dispersion-free few-mode fibres, notwithstanding differences in intramodal dispersion and mode crosstalk.  相似文献

We describe in this paper a frequency-domain measurement configuration allowing the determination of intermodal dispersion, differential mode attenuation and mode-coupling effects in graded-index optical fibres. Attention is mainly given to intermodal dispersion which is obtained with a resolution of 5 ps km–1 and a dynamic range of 15dB. Spatial (or modal) resolution is examined from both the theoretical and experimental point of view and the high degree of resolution of the experiment is illustrated. Interpretation of the results for deducing the index profile errors and correcting the preform manufacturing process shows the usefulness of the method for improving fibre quality.  相似文献

The switching dynamics of short pulses propagating in a two-core optical fiber under the effects of intrapulse stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS) and intermodal dispersion is investigated theoretically. We find that, when the input pulses are short and intense enough, ISRS in general reduces the width of the pulses propagating in the launching core of the fiber and, at the same time, slows down the pulses. However, if the two-core fiber contains sufficient intermodal dispersion, the pulse-narrowing effect of ISRS can be weakened. Using typical fiber parameters, we demonstrate with numerical examples how the interaction of ISRS and intermodal dispersion affects the pulse shape. For laser internal therapy in medical applications, optical fibres are required to propagate the laser beam. The far-field pattern of the laser beam at the exit face of the optical fibre is studied using a multimode step-index fibre and a graded index Selfoc fibre. The degree of dispersion, or the output angular distribution, of the beam passing through the Selfoc fibre is much smaller than that passing through the multimode step-index fibre. Consequently, the energy density in the far-field pattern of the beam passing through the Selfoc fibre is very much larger than that for the beam passing through the multimode step-index fibre. It is concluded that the Selfoc fibre is more effective in laser internal therapy.  相似文献

An optical low-coherence interferometry technique has been used to simultaneously resolve the mode profile and to measure the intermodal dispersion of guided modes of a few-mode fiber. Measurements are performed using short samples of fiber (about 50 cm). There is no need for a complex mode-conversion technique to reach a high interference visibility. Four LP mode groups of the few-mode fiber are resolved. Experimental results and numerical simulations show that the ellipticity of the fiber core leads to a distinct splitting of the degenerate high-order modes in group index. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, it has been demonstrated that degenerate LP11 modes are much more sensitive to core shape variations than the fundamental modes and that intermodal dispersion of high-order degenerate modes can be used for characterizing the anisotropy of an optical waveguide.  相似文献

The effects of intermodal dispersion on ultrashort optical pulse propagation through multi-core fibers are analyzed theoretically, which has been ignored in previous studies. A three-core fiber with collinear and triangular configuration and a four-core fiber are considered. We demonstrate with numerical examples that the intermodal dispersion can cause pulse breakup effect in multi-core fibers.  相似文献

The non-linear degradation along a RZ-WDM 40 Gb/s transmission link is shown to be reduced when a spectral direct sequence bipolar phase shift keying (DS/BPSK) encoding format is used. Standard single mode fibre transmission links are studied which use optical phase conjugation for dispersion compensation in the encoded system. For a WDM system with 100 GHz channel spacing, an improvement of 6 dB is found in the link output power margin at a distance of 300 km after five amplification stages.  相似文献

The mesoscopic effect of spectral modulation is used to experimentally investigate the possible effect of a metal-coated SNOM tip on the intermodal dispersion of an optical fiber. Highly regular modulation registered in a fixed spectral region of the broadband light transmitted by a 200 nm SNOM tip yields the value of optical path difference (OPD) in the two-mode model. To investigate the origin of this OPD a series of spectral measurements accompanied with a gradual reduction of the multimode fiber tail length has been performed. The results indicate that the observed OPD consists of two clearly distinguishable contributions: the OPD in the non-coated multimode fiber and the OPD in the metal-coated SNOM tip. The first one is a result of the inherent modal dispersion of an optical fiber. A numerical consideration shows that the second one can be attributed to a mode-dependent contribution of surface plasmon polaritons: one of the two modes couples to plasmons stronger than the other one, resulting in a remarkably slower propagation. This leads to a completely different value of intermodal dispersion, which actually changes its sign in the SNOM tip. Proposed is a logical explanation for such kind of a sign-switching behavior.  相似文献

This paper reports that a 5-cm length birefringent photonic crystal fibre is used to tune the output frequency of unamplified 10-fs Ti:sapphire pulses. The zero dispersion of the fibre is at 823~nm and 800~nm for slow and fast fundamental modes, respectively. It is demonstrated that efficient upshift of the output frequency can be achieved when the pumped radiation is polarized along the slow axis of the fibre. When the average input power reaches 320~mW, about 60% of the output energy is located in one peak at 600~nm and is accompanied by depletion of the pulse inside the anomalous dispersion region.

This paper numerically investigates the effects of dispersion on optical fibre chaotic communication, and proposes a dispersion compensation scheme to improve the performance of optical fibre chaotic communication system. The obtained results show that the transmitter-receiver synchronization progressively degrades and the signal-to-noise ratio of the recovered message deteriorates as the fibre length increases due to the dispersion accumulation. Two segments of 2.5-km dispersion-compensating fibres are symmetrically placed at both ends of a segment of 245-km nonzero dispersionshifted fibre with low dispersion in one compensation period. The numerical results show that the signal-to-noise ratio of the extracted 1 GHz sinusoidal message is improved from -2.92 dB to 15.38 dB by this dispersion compensation for the transmission distance of 500 km.  相似文献

This paper studies the compressional dispersive Alfvén (CDA) waves where Noether symmetries will be calculated from which the corresponding conservation laws will be obtained via Noether's theorem. Furthermore, one case of double reduction is performed via the association of a conserved vector with a Noether symmetry (with zero gauge). The conserved quantities of optical solitons in the presence of intermodal dispersion that is governed by the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger's equation with Kerr law nonlinearity. The invariance-multiplier method is adopted to carry out the analysis, from which the conserved densities are then retrieved. Finally, the conserved quantities are obtained using the 1-soliton solution of the governing equation.  相似文献

A mathematical model of linear dynamic distortions of average signal power in a planar optical waveguide stemming from the intermodal coupling and dispersion of waveguide modes caused by macroscopic bends and irregularities of the optical waveguide surface has been developed on the basis of pulse intermodal scattering matrix. It is shown that the elements of this matrix are determined at a waveguide segment whose length greatly exceeds the correlation scale of the field of irregularities but is much smaller than the normalization length of waveguide modes and are described by rectangular functions with a duration proportional to the relative velocity of the corresponding modes. The dependences of the pulse intermodal scattering matrix on the intensities of absorption, Rayleigh scattering, and optical signal scattering from waveguide irregularities have been established. It is shown that, at waveguide lengths exceeding the normalization length, the optical signal shape becomes almost stable and can be expressed in terms of the pulse characteristic of an integrating circuit. It has been established that irregularities of the film in a bent optical waveguide lead not only to additional attenuation but also to enhancement of multimode distortion. A matrix method is proposed for taking into account these distortions, which is based on the effect of equalization (scrambling) of the signal energy over the spectrum of the bent waveguide modes. The model developed was used to process the experimental data on the dynamics of a signal in a weakly guiding multimode polymer optical fiber in order to estimate the parameters of attenuation and irregularities of the waveguide surface.  相似文献

The conversion of the FM-to-AM effect induced by intermodal interference in the broadband large-mode-area (LMA) fiber laser was first investigated theoretically and experimentally. The numerical simulation results show that the spectrum transfer functions are different at different positions of the LMA fiber end face owing to the intermodal interference, so the output broadband pulses are different. We attain the similar results in the experiment when measuring the output pulse with the single mode fiber sampling oscilloscope. Whereas there is no amplitude modulation for the output pulse when measured by the bulk detector owing to the orthogonal characteristic of the eigenmodes.  相似文献

We propose and analyse numerically a novel dispersion-imbalanced non-linear optical loop mirror (NOLM) scheme allowing simultaneous compression and amplitude noise reduction of chirped ultrashort-pulsed signals. An all-fibre distributed Gires-Tournois etalon (DGTE) made of two uniform fibre Bragg gratings is inserted asymmetrically in the loop, and is used both to dispersion imbalance the NOLM and to compress the pulses. The results show that the output pulses are accompanied by side lobes, which originate from the no-uniformity of the DGTE dispersion spectrum. We analyse the formation of these side lobes and show that, in the case of highly chirped input pulses, side lobes are strongly reduced by the NOLM architecture. In this case, the device operates well even when the signal optical spectrum extends over an entire free spectral range of the DGTE. We believe that this work will be useful for the design of all-optical regeneration schemes for highly chirped data streams in optical transmission systems.  相似文献

This paper comprehensively investigates the properties of self phase modulation based optical delay systems consisting of dispersion compensation fibre and highly nonlinear fibres. It researches into the impacts of power level launched into highly nonlinear fibres, conversion wavelength, dispersion slope, modulation format and optical filter bandwidth on the overall performance of optical delay systems. The results reveal that,if the power launched into highly nonlinear fibres is fixed, the time delay generally varies linearly with the conversion wavelength, but jumps intermittently at some conversion wavelengths. However, the time delay varies semi-periodically with the power launched into highly nonlinear fibres. The dispersion slope of highly nonlinear fibres has significant influence on the time delay, especially for the negative dispersion slope. The time delay differs with modulation formats due to the different combined interaction of nonlinearity and dispersion in fibres. The bandwidth of the optical filters also greatly affects the time delay because it determines the bandwidth of the passed signal in the self phase modulation based time delay systems. The output signal quality of the overall time delay systems depends on the conversion wavelength and input power level. The optimisation of the power level and conversion wavelength to provide the best output signal quality is made at the end of this paper.  相似文献

Here, optical soliton perturbation with quadratic-cubic nonlinearity has been discussed by applying Lie symmetry and group invariants. The perturbation terms include third and fourth order dispersions in addition to self-steepening, intermodal dispersion and higher order dispersion effects. Using presented algorithms, Bright and dark soliton solutions are revealed.  相似文献

Ultra-short pulse compression using photonic crystal fibre   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A short section of photonic crystal fibre has been used for ultra-short pulse compression. The unique optical properties of this novel medium in terms of high non-linearity and relatively small group velocity dispersion are shown to provide an ideal platform for the standard fibre pulse compression technique used directly on the nano-Joule output pulses from a commercial laser system. We report an order of magnitude reduction of the pulse width to 25 fs FWHM but predict a substantially improved performance with a dedicated fibre design. Good agreement is obtained with a simple model for the spectral broadening in the fibre. PACS 42.65.Re; 42.70.Qs; 42.81.Cn  相似文献
