In this paper, we establish formulas for the configuration of a special class of irreducible representations of the Cuntz algebra , . These irreducible representations arise as subrepresentations of naturally occurring representations of acting in and arise from consideration of multiresolution wavelet filters.

The algebra of all matrices over a field has a natural -grading . In this paper graded identities of the -graded algebra over a field of characteristic zero are studied. It is shown that all the -graded polynomial identities of follow from the following:

A mapping between Banach spaces is said to be polynomially continuous if its restriction to any bounded set is uniformly continuous for the weak polynomial topology. A Banach space has property (RP) if given two bounded sequences , we have that for every polynomial on whenever for every polynomial on ; i.e., the restriction of every polynomial on to each bounded set is uniformly sequentially continuous for the weak polynomial topology. We show that property (RP) does not imply that every scalar valued polynomial on must be polynomially continuous.

An algorithm is given for computing the Hausdorff dimension of the set(s) of real numbers with representations , where each , a finite set of ``digits', and is a Pisot number. The Hausdorff dimension is shown to be , where is the top eigenvalue of a finite 0-1 matrix , and a simple algorithm for generating from the data is given.

In this paper we analyze the localization of , the fiber of the double suspension map , with respect to . If four cells at the bottom of , the th extended power spectrum of the Moore spectrum, are collapsed to a point, then one obtains a spectrum . Let be the James-Hopf map followed by the collapse map. Then we show that the secondary suspension map has a lifting to the fiber of and this lifting is shown to be a -periodic equivalence, hence an -equivalence.

Let be a smooth involution on a closed -dimensional manifold such that all Stiefel-Whitney classes of the tangent bundle to each component of the fixed point set of vanish in positive dimension. In this paper, we estimate the least possible lower bound of dim if does not bound.

If and are positive integers with and , then the equation of the title possesses at most one solution in positive integers and , with the possible exceptions of satisfying , and . The proof of this result relies on a variety of diophantine approximation techniques including those of rational approximation to hypergeometric functions, the theory of linear forms in logarithms and recent computational methods related to lattice-basis reduction. Additionally, we compare and contrast a number of these last mentioned techniques.

One of the purposes of this note is to correct the proof of a recent result of Y. Guo & M. Le on the equation . Moreover, we prove that the diophantine equation , , , , , gcd, , has only finitely many solutions, all of which satisfying .

It is shown that the suspension order of the -fold cartesian product of real projective -space is less than or equal to the suspension order of the -fold symmetric product of and greater than or equal to , where and satisfy and . In particular has suspension order , and for fixed the suspension orders of the spaces are unbounded while their stable suspension orders are constant and equal to .

Let be the finite field with elements and let denote the ring of polynomials in one variable with coefficients in . Let be a monic polynomial irreducible in . We obtain a bound for the least degree of a monic polynomial irreducible in ( odd) which is a quadratic non-residue modulo . We also find a bound for the least degree of a monic polynomial irreducible in which is a primitive root modulo .

Given a -linear operator from a product of spaces into a Banach space , our main result proves the equivalence between being completely continuous, having an -valued separately continuous extension to the product of the biduals and having a regular associated polymeasure. It is well known that, in the linear case, these are also equivalent to being weakly compact, and that, for , being weakly compact implies the conditions above but the converse fails.

The Donald-Flanigan conjecture asserts that the integral group ring of a finite group can be deformed to an algebra over the power series ring with underlying module such that if is any prime dividing then is a direct sum of total matric algebras whose blocks are in natural bijection with and of the same dimensions as those of We prove this for using the natural representation of its Hecke algebra by quantum Yang-Baxter matrices to show that over localized at the multiplicatively closed set generated by and all , the Hecke algebra becomes a direct sum of total matric algebras. The corresponding ``canonical" primitive idempotents are distinct from Wenzl's and in the classical case (), from those of Young.

We determine all simple perfect dissections of rectangles into at most twelve rectangular elements. A computer search shows there are only eight such dissections, two of order 10, three of order 11, and three of order 12.
