The transitions from or to strange nonchaotic attractors are investigated by recurrence plot-based methods. The techniques used here take into account the recurrence times and the fact that trajectories on strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) synchronize. The performance of these techniques is shown for the Heagy-Hammel transition to SNAs and for the fractalization transition to SNAs for which other usual nonlinear analysis tools are not successful.   相似文献

Whether Wada basins of strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) can exist has been an open problem. Here we verify the existence of Wada basin for SNAs in a quasiperiodically forced Duffing map. We show that the SNAs? basins are full Wada for a set of parameters of positive measure. We identify two types of SNAs? Wada basins by the basin cell method. It suggests that SNAs cannot be predicted reliably for the specific initial conditions.  相似文献

Whether strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) can occur typically in dynamical systems other than quasiperiodically driven systems has long been an open question. Here we show, based on a physical analysis and numerical evidence, that robust SNAs can be induced by small noise in autonomous discrete-time maps and in periodically driven continuous-time systems. These attractors, which are relevant to physical and biological applications, can thus be expected to occur more commonly in dynamical systems than previously thought.  相似文献

A variety of different dynamical regimes involving strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) can be observed in a quasiperiodically forced delayed system. We describe some numerical experiments giving evidences of intertwined basin boundaries (smooth, non-Wada fractal and Wada property) for SNAs. In particular, we show that Wada property, fractality and smoothness can be intertwined on arbitrarily fine scales. This suggests that SNAs can exhibit the final state sensitivity and unpredictable behaviors. An interesting dynamical transition of SNAs together with associated mechanisms from non-Wada fractal to Wada intertwined basin boundaries is examined. A scaling exponent is used to characterize the intertwined basin boundaries.  相似文献

Iterations on R given by quasiperiodic displacement are closely linked with the quasiperiodic forcing of an oscillator. We begin by recalling how these problems are related. It enables us to predict the possibility of appearance of strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) for simple increasing maps of the real line with quasiperiodic displacement. Chaos is not possible in this case (Lyapounov exponents cannot be positive). Studying this model of iterations on R for larger variations, beyond critical values where it is no longer invertible, we can get chaotic motions. In this situation we can get a lot of strange attractors because we are able to smoothly adjust the value of the Lyapounov exponent. The SNAs obtained can be viewed as the result of pasting pieces of trajectories, some of which having positive local Lyapounov exponents and others having negative ones. This leads us to think that the distinction between these SNAs and chaotic attractors is rather weak.  相似文献

We study three critical curves in a quasiperiodically driven system with time delays, where occurrence of symmetry-breaking and symmetry-recovering phenomena can be observed. Typical dynamical tongues involving strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) can be distinguished. A striking phenomenon that can be discovered is multistability and coexisting attractors in some tongues surrounding by critical curves. The blowout bifurcation accompanying with on-off intermittency can also be observed. We show that collision of attractors at a symmetric invariant subspace can lead to the appearance of symmetry-breaking.  相似文献

Numerous studies have shown that strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) can be observed generally in quasiperiodically forced systems. These systems could be one- or high-dimensional maps, continuous-time systems, or experimental models. Recently introduced measures of complexity based on recurrence plots can detect the transitions from quasiperiodic to chaotic motion via SNAs in the previously cited systems. We study here the case of continuous-time systems and experimental models. In particular, we show the performance of the recurrence measures in detecting transitions to SNAs in quasiperiodically forced excitable systems and experimental time series.  相似文献

We discuss strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) in addition to chaotic and regular attractors in a quasiperiodically driven system with time delays. A route and the associated mechanism are described for a special type of attractor called strange-nonchaotic-attractor-like (SNA-like) through T2 torus bifurcation. The type of attractor can be observed in large parameter domains and it is easily mistaken for a true SNA judging merely from the phase portrait, power spectrum and the largest Lyapunov exponent. SNA-like attractor is not strange and has no phase sensitivity. Conditions for Neimark-Sacker bifurcation are obtained by theoretical analysis for the unforced system. Complicated and interesting dynamical transitions are investigated among the different tongues.  相似文献

This Letter presents a new three-dimensional autonomous system with four quadratic terms. The system with five equilibrium points has complex chaotic dynamics behaviors. It can generate many different single chaotic attractors and double coexisting chaotic attractors over a large range of parameters. We observe that these chaotic attractors were rarely reported in previous work. The complex dynamical behaviors of the system are further investigated by means of phase portraits, Lyapunov exponents spectrum, Lyapunov dimension, dissipativeness of system, bifurcation diagram and Poincaré map. The physical circuit experimental results of the chaotic attractors show agreement with numerical simulations. More importantly, the analysis of frequency spectrum shows that the novel system has a broad frequency bandwidth, which is very desirable for engineering applications such as secure communications.  相似文献

Unstable attractors are a novel type of attractor with local unstable dynamics, but with positive measures of basins. Here, we introduce local contracting dynamics by slightly modifying the function which mediates the interactions among the oscillators. Thus, the property of unstable attractors can be controlled through the cooperation of expanding and contracting dynamics. We demonstrate that one certain type of unstable attractor is successfully controlled through this simple modification. Specifically, the staying time for unstable attractors can be prolonged, and we can even turn the unstable attractors into stable attractors with predictable basin sizes. As an application, we demonstrate how to realize the switching dynamics that is only sensitive to the finite size perturbations.  相似文献

We experimentally show that computing with attractors leads to fast adaptive behavior in which dynamical associations can be made between different inputs which initially produce sharply distinct outputs. We do so by first defining a set of simple local procedures which allow a computing array to change its state in time so as to produce classical Pavlovian conditioning. We then examine the dynamics of coalescence and dissociation of attractors with a number of quantitative experiments. We also show how such arrays exhibit generalization and differentiation of inputs in their behavior.  相似文献

We study a multimode semiconductor laser subject to a moderate optical feedback. The steady state is destabilized by either a simple Hopf bifurcation leading to in phase dynamics or by a degenerate Hopf bifurcation leading to antiphase dynamics. The degenerate bifurcation is also a source of multiple coexisting attractors. We show that a simple interpretation of the low frequency fluctuations in the multimode regime is provided by a chaotic itinerancy among the many coexisting unstable attractors produced by the degenerate Hopf bifurcation.  相似文献

The dynamics of a three-block mechanical system is investigated: each block is pulled by a belt and is subjected to linear elastic and nonlinear frictional forces which induce oscillations in the system. The study of the full dynamics of the system is partially reduced to the study of a two-dimensional map; its attractors, their basins of attraction and their Lyapunov exponents provide a powerful tool to understand the dynamic behaviour of the full mechanical system which possesses rich dynamics characterised by periodic, quasi-periodic, chaotic and hyper-chaotic attractors.  相似文献

Recently we have used a cellular automata model which describes the dynamics of a multi-connected network to reproduce the refractory behavior and aging effects obtained in immunization experiments performed with mice when subjected to multiple perturbations. In this paper we investigate the similarities between the aging dynamics observed in this multi-connected network and the one observed in glassy systems, by using the usual tools applied to analyze the latter. An interesting feature we show here, is that the model reproduces the biological aspects observed in the experiments during the long transient time it takes to reach the stationary state. Depending on the initial conditions, and without any perturbation, the system may reach one of a family of long-period attractors. The perturbations may drive the system from its natural attractor to other attractors of the same family. We discuss the different roles played by the small random perturbations ("noise") and by the large periodic perturbations ("immunizations").Received: 7 May 2003, Published online: 23 July 2003PACS: 87.18.Hf Spatiotemporal pattern formation in cellular populations - 87.10.+e General theory and mathematical aspects - 61.43.Fs GlassesD.A. The properties of Hadamard matrices are used to construct suitable sets of prototype vectors for storage in Hopfield-like networks. Maximal sets ofp=N of such vectors are defined leading to sharp minima on the energy surface which act as attractors for the dynamics. A natural limit for such sets turns out to be <1/2. Dynamics are based on the flips of spinpairs of opposite sign, maintaining zero magnetization (zero bias) for all states under consideration. The flow to attractors in dynamics is discussed and the low-lying excitations from the ground states are calculated.  相似文献

The dynamical attractors are thought to underlie many biological functions of recurrent neural networks. Here we show that stable periodic spike sequences with precise timings are the attractors of the spiking dynamics of recurrent neural networks with global inhibition. Almost all spike sequences converge within a finite number of transient spikes to these attractors. The convergence is fast, especially when the global inhibition is strong. These results support the possibility that precise spatiotemporal sequences of spikes are useful for information encoding and processing in biological neural networks.  相似文献

Common experience suggests that attracting invariant sets in nonlinear dynamical systems are generally stable. Contrary to this intuition, we present a dynamical system, a network of pulse-coupled oscillators, in which unstable attractors arise naturally. From random initial conditions, groups of synchronized oscillators (clusters) are formed that send pulses alternately, resulting in a periodic dynamics of the network. Under the influence of arbitrarily weak noise, this synchronization is followed by a desynchronization of clusters, a phenomenon induced by attractors that are unstable. Perpetual synchronization and desynchronization lead to a switching among attractors. This is explained by the geometrical fact, that these unstable attractors are surrounded by basins of attraction of other attractors, whereas the full measure of their own basin is located remote from the attractor. Unstable attractors do not only exist in these systems, but moreover dominate the dynamics for large networks and a wide range of parameters.  相似文献

We study a deterministic dynamics with two time scales in a continuous state attractor network. To the usual (fast) relaxation dynamics towards point attractors (“patterns”) we add a slow coupling dynamics that makes the visited patterns lose stability, leading to an itinerant behavior in the form of punctuated equilibria. One finds that the transition frequency matrix for transitions between patterns shows non-trivial statistical properties in the chaotic itinerant regime. We show that mixture input patterns can be temporally segmented by the itinerant dynamics. The viability of a combinatorial spatio-temporal neural code is also demonstrated.  相似文献

We study new phenomena associated with the dynamics of higher dimensional non-invertible, hyperbolic maps f on basic sets of saddle type; the dynamics in this case presents important differences from the case of diffeomorphisms or expanding maps. We show that the stable dimension (i.e. the Hausdorff dimension of the intersection between local stable manifolds and the basic set) and the unstable dimension (similar definition) give a lot of information about the dynamical/ergodic properties of endomorphisms on folded basic sets. We prove a geometric flattening phenomenon associated to the stable dimension, i.e. we show that if the stable dimension is zero at a point, then the fractal Λ must be contained in a submanifold and f is expanding on Λ. We characterize folded attractors and folded repellers, as those basic sets with full unstable dimension, respectively with full stable dimension. We classify possible dynamical behaviors, and establish when is the system (Λ,f,μ) 1-sided or 2-sided Bernoulli for certain equilibrium measures μ on folded basic sets, for a class of perturbation maps.  相似文献

We study non-elastic billiard dynamics in an equilateral triangular table. In such dynamics, collisions with the walls of the table are not elastic, as in standard billiards; rather, the outgoing angle of the trajectory with the normal vector to the boundary at the point of collision is a uniform factor λ < 1 smaller than the incoming angle. This leads to contraction in phase space for the discrete-time dynamics between consecutive collisions, and hence to attractors of zero Lebesgue measure, which are almost always fractal strange attractors with chaotic dynamics, due to the presence of an expansion mechanism. We study the structure of these strange attractors and their evolution as the contraction parameter λ is varied. For λ∈(0,1/3), we prove rigorously that the attractor has the structure of a Cantor set times an interval, whereas for larger values of λ gaps arise in the Cantor structure. For λ close to 1, the attractor splits into three transitive components, whose basins of attraction have fractal boundaries.  相似文献
