Summary The 25° sorption isotherms of a polyoxyethylated n-dodecanol with 14 ethylene oxide units (C12EO14) on sodium and calcium montmorillonite were determined. Sorption complexes of the two clays were also prepared with C12EO30, n-dodecanol, polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol. X-ray powder diagrams show that the sorbed organic molecules are intercalated with their chains parallel to the montmorillonite lamellae, in layers one or two molecules thick. Sodium montmorillonite sorbs C12 EO14 and C12EO30 in excess of close-packed double layers: the excess detergent is occluded in interstices and absorbs moisture at 85% relative humidity to the same extent as the bulk detergents. The double layer complexes are not swelled by water; the single layer complexes sorb a single layer of water molecules at 85% relative humidity.Apparent densities of the sorbed organic molecules decrease with increasing EO content while bulk densities increase. This is explained in terms of chain flexibility and polarity.
Zusammenfassung Die 25°-Absorptions-Isothermen von polyoxyäthyliertem n-Dodekanol mit 14Äthylenoxyd-Einheiten(C12EO14) an Na- und Ca-Montmorillonit wurden bestimmt. Sorptions-Komplexe der 2 Tone wurden ebenfalls mit nDodekanol, Polyäthylenglykol und Polypropylenglykol präpariert. Pulverdiagramme zeigen, daß die sorbierten organischen Moleküle mit ihren Ketten parallel zu den Montmorillonitlamellen eingelagert sind, in Schichten 1 oder 2 Moleküle dick. Na-Montmorillonit sorbiert C12EO14 und C12EO30 im Überschuß zur dichtgepackten Doppelschicht. Der Überschuß ist in Hohlräumen eingelagert und absorbiert Wasser bei 85° relativer Feuchtigkeit im selben Ausmaß wie die reinen Detergentien. Die Doppelschichtkomplexe werden nicht durch Wasser gequollen. Die Einschichtkomplexe sorbieren eine Monoschicht von Wasser-Molekülen bei 85° relativer Luftfeuchtigkeit.Scheinbare Dichten der sorbierten organischen Moleküle nehmen mit steigendem Äthylenoxydgehalt ab, während die Dichten der reinen Substanz ansteigen. Dies läßt sich auf Grund der Kettenbeweglichkeit und Polarität erklären.

This study applies a novel computational method to study molecular recognition for three sets of synthetic hosts: molecular clips, molecular tweezers, and a synthetic barbiturate receptor. The computed standard free energies of binding for the 12 binding reactions agree closely with experiment and provide insight into the roles of configurational entropy, preorganization, and induced fit in the systems studied. The computed changes in configurational entropy are comparable in magnitude to the changes in mean potential plus solvation energy, and they result primarily from changes in the average width of the energy wells upon binding. A strong correlation is observed between the changes in configurational energy and configurational entropy upon binding, resulting in near-linear compensation analogous to classical entropy-enthalpy compensation.  相似文献

Free energy differences are calculated for a set of two model host molecules, binding acetone and methanol. Two active sites of different characteristics were constructed based on an artificially extended C60 fullerene molecule, possibly functionalised to include polar interactions in an otherwise apolar, spherical cavity. The model host systems minimise the necessary sampling of conformational space while still capturing key aspects of ligand binding. The estimates of the free energies are split up into energetic and entropic contributions, using three different approaches investigating the convergence behaviour. For these systems, a direct calculation of the total energy and entropy is more efficient than calculating the entropy from the temperature dependence of the free energy or from a direct thermodynamic integration formulation. Furthermore, the compensating surrounding–surrounding energies and entropies are split off by calculating reduced ligand-surrounding energies and entropies. These converge much more readily and lead to properties that are more straightforwardly interpreted in terms of molecular interactions and configurations. Even though not experimentally accessible, the reduced thermodynamic properties may prove highly relevant for computational drug design, as they may give direct insights into possibilities to further optimise ligand binding while optimisation in the surrounding–surrounding energy or entropy will exactly cancel and not lead to improved affinity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, the relationship between molecular architecture and the formation of twist-bend phases is reviewed under the context of shape dependency. We conclude that the twist-bend phase is a universal phenomenon, which occurs in a wide variety of materials, for dimers through to main chain polymers. In the process, the chemical information on molecular design is effectively lost or irrelevant, and molecular topology takes precedence over electrostatic interactions in mesophase formation. As a consequence of this macro-scale material, engineering by shape alone becomes a possibility, potentially more phases may be realised, and entropy is anisotropic.  相似文献

Enthalpies of dilution and osmotic coefficients of sodium decylsulfate (NaDeS)-dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO) mixtures in water were determined at 298 and 310 K, respectively. From the enthalpies of dilution, the apparent and then the partial molar relative enthalpies of the surfactant mixtures were calculated. From the osmotic coefficients, calculated at 298 K, the non-ideal free energies were derived. The latter were combined with the partial molar relative enthalpies to obtain the non-ideal entropies. From the apparent molar properties, using a previously reported approach, the excess thermodynamic properties for the surfactant-surfactant mixed micelle formation in water were evaluated as functions of the mixture composition at some total micellized concentration. In the whole range of the mixture composition, the excess free energy is negative, indicating that the mixed micelle formation is favoured with respect to that of pure micelles. This process is governed by the enthalpy and/or the entropy, depending on the mixture composition. The effect of the alkyl chain length was also studied by comparing the present results to those of the sodium dodecylsulfate-DDAO mixture.  相似文献

The uptake of mono-(6--aminoethylamino-6-deoxy)--cyclodextrin (CDen) by Na-, Ca- and Zn-montmorillonites has been examined at 25°C. Each of the first two minerals forms only one intercalated phase in which the CDen molecules are intercalated as a monolayer, while the third yields a mixture of two intercalated phases whose interlayer spaces are occupied by mono- and bilayers of the guest molecules. The ΔG, ΔH and ΔS values of the dissociation of a number of diprotonated diamines were determinated by potentiometric and calorimetric methods, in 1M KNO3, at 25°C. The results are discussed in terms of solvent effects, the theory of Kirkwood and Westheimer, and microscopic constants.  相似文献

The crystal structure and properties of lithium (cryptand[2.1.1]) ceside, Li+ (C211)Cs-, are reported. Li+ (C211)Cs- is the second ceside and third alkalide with a one-dimensional (1D) zigzag chain of alkali metal anions. The distance between adjacent Cs- anions, 6 A, is shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radii, 7 A. Optical, magic angle spinning NMR, two-probe alternating and direct current conductivity, and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements reveal unique physical properties that result from the overlap of adjacent Cs- wave functions in the chain structure. The properties of cesium (cryptand[2.2.2]) ceside, Cs+ (C222)Cs-, were also studied to compare the effects of the subtle geometric changes between the two 1D zigzag chain structures. Li+ (C211)Cs- and Cs+ (C222)Cs- are both low-band-gap semiconductors with anisotropic reflectivities and large paramagnetic 133Cs NMR chemical shifts relative to Cs- (g). An electronic structure model consistent with the experimental data has sp2-hybridized Cs- within the chain and sp-hybridized chain ends. Ab initio multiconfiguration self-consistent field calculations on the ceside trimer, Cs3(3-), support this model and indicate a net bonding interaction between nearest neighbors. The buildup of electron density between adjacent Cs- anions is visualized through an electron density difference map constructed by subtracting the density of three cesium atoms from the short Cs3(3-) fragment.  相似文献

A new relationship between electron correlation energy and Tsallis entropy is presented. This relationship is a generalization of previous equations which correlate the atomic correlation energy and the Shannon entropy. The results, relatively to the atoms with atomic number 2 < Z < 29, put in evidence the crucial role of the p‐parameter in terms of representation of the long‐range interaction contribution in the correlation energy. Moreover, the p‐values, which reproduce the experimental values of the correlation energy, indicate that the atomic wave functions are more localized with respect to those calculated in the limit of p → 1. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We review a recently developed micellization theory, which is based on a free-energy approach and offers several advantages over the conventional one, based on mass action and rate equations. As all the results are derived from a single free-energy expression, one can adapt the theory to different scenarios by merely modifying the initial expression. We present results concerning various features of micellization out of equilibrium, such as the existence of metastable aggregates (premicelles), micellar nucleation and growth, transient aggregates, and final relaxation toward equilibrium. Several predictions that await experimental investigation are discussed.  相似文献

The uptake of -, -, -, hexakis-2,6-di-O-methyl--(DM--), heptakis-2,6-di-O-methyl--(DM--) and heptakis-2,3,6-tri-O-methyl-- (TM--) cyclodextrins (CD's) by Na-, Ca-, and Cu-montmorillonites has been studied at 25°C. Each of -, DM--, DM--, and TM--CD's forms a complex with all of these montmorillonites in which the guest molecules are arranged as a monolayer with their open faces parallel to the silicate sheet of montmorillonite. On the other hand, -CD is intercalated only by the Na form and -CD cannot be taken up by any of the clays used. The interlayer spacing of the -CD complex varies from 18.0 to 21.5 Å with replacement of the interlayer cation, but those of the methylated -and -CD complexes remain unchanged, beingca. 21 and 18 Å, respectively. The different behaviour of the parent and methylated CD's is explained in terms of the structural and physicochemical characteristics of the individual CD's and interlayer cations.  相似文献

Joined with measures of specific heat at low temperature , a calorimetric study of alkali sulphates from ordinary temperature to 1500 K has allowed the calculation of enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy of these salts.
