It is well known that the ratio bound is an upper bound on the stability number α(G) of a regular graph G. In this note it is proved that, if G is a graph whose edge is a union of classes of a symmetric association scheme, the Delsarte’s linear programming bound can alternatively be stated as the minimum of a set of ratio bounds. This result follows from a recently established relationship between a set of convex quadratic bounds on α(G) and the number ?′(G), a well known variant of the Lovász theta number, which was introduced independently by Schrijver [A. Schrijver, A comparison of the Delsarte and Lovász bounds, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 25 (1979) 425-429] and McEliece et al. [R.J. McEliece, E.R. Rodemich, H.C. Rumsey Jr, The Lovász bound and some generalizations, J. Combin. Inform. System Sci. 3 (1978) 134-152].  相似文献

Erd?s and Lovász conjectured in 1968 that for every graph G with χ(G)>ω(G) and any two integers s,t≥2 with s+t=χ(G)+1, there is a partition (S,T) of the vertex set V(G) such that χ(G[S])≥s and χ(G[T])≥t. Except for a few cases, this conjecture is still unsolved. In this note we prove the conjecture for quasi-line graphs and for graphs with independence number 2.  相似文献

In 1976, Stahl [14] defined the m-tuple coloring of a graph G and formulated a conjecture on the multichromatic number of Kneser graphs. For m=1 this conjecture is Kneser’s conjecture, which was proved by Lovász in 1978 [10]. Here we show that Lovász’s topological lower bound given in this way cannot be used to prove Stahl’s conjecture. We obtain that the strongest index bound only gives the trivial mω(G) lower bound if m≥|V(G)|. On the other hand, the connectivity bound for Kneser graphs is constant if m is sufficiently large. These findings provide new examples of graphs showing that the gaps between the chromatic number, the index bound and the connectivity bound can be arbitrarily large.  相似文献

A graph G=(V,E) is said to be 6-mixed-connected if GUD is connected for all sets UV and DE which satisfy 2|U|+|D|≤5. In this note we prove that 6-mixed-connected graphs are (redundantly globally) rigid in the plane. This improves on a previous result of Lovász and Yemini.  相似文献

We show that every cubic bridgeless graph G has at least 2|V(G)|/3656 perfect matchings. This confirms an old conjecture of Lovász and Plummer.  相似文献

Non-Separating Paths in 4-Connected Graphs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In 1975, Lovász conjectured that for any positive integer k, there exists a minimum positive integer f(k) such that, for any two vertices x, y in any f(k)-connected graph G, there is a path P from x to y in G such that GV(P) is k-connected. A result of Tutte implies f(1) = 3. Recently, f(2) = 5 was shown by Chen et al. and, independently, by Kriesell. In this paper, we show that f(2) = 4 except for double wheels.Received October 17, 2003  相似文献

A reflexive graph is a simple undirected graph where a loop has been added at each vertex. If G and H are reflexive graphs and UV(H), then a vertex map f:UV(G) is called nonexpansive if for every two vertices x,yU, the distance between f(x) and f(y) in G is at most that between x and y in H. A reflexive graph G is said to have the extension property (EP) if for every reflexive graph H, every UV(H) and every nonexpansive vertex map f:UV(G), there is a graph homomorphism φf:HG that agrees with f on U. Characterizations of EP-graphs are well known in the mathematics and computer science literature. In this article we determine when exactly, for a given “sink”-vertex sV(G), we can obtain such an extension φf;s that maps each vertex of H closest to the vertex s among all such existing homomorphisms φf. A reflexive graph G satisfying this is then said to have the sink extension property (SEP). We then characterize the reflexive graphs with the unique sink extension property (USEP), where each such sink extensions φf;s is unique.  相似文献

A function f:V(G)→{-1,0,1} defined on the vertices of a graph G is a minus total dominating function (MTDF) if the sum of its function values over any open neighborhood is at least one. An MTDF f is minimal if there does not exist an MTDF g:V(G)→{-1,0,1}, fg, for which g(v)?f(v) for every vV(G). The weight of an MTDF is the sum of its function values over all vertices. The minus total domination number of G is the minimum weight of an MTDF on G, while the upper minus domination number of G is the maximum weight of a minimal MTDF on G. In this paper we present upper bounds on the upper minus total domination number of a cubic graph and a 4-regular graph and characterize the regular graphs attaining these upper bounds.  相似文献

For a graph G, the neighborhood complex N[G] is the simplicial complex having all subsets of vertices with a common neighbor as its faces. It is a well-known result of Lovász that if ‖N[G]‖ is k-connected, then the chromatic number of G is at least k+3.We prove that the connectivity of the neighborhood complex of a random graph is tightly concentrated, almost always between 1/2 and 2/3 of the expected clique number. We also show that the number of dimensions of nontrivial homology is almost always small, O(logd), compared to the expected dimension d of the complex itself.  相似文献

A Roman dominating function of a graph G=(V,E) is a function f:V→{0,1,2} such that every vertex x with f(x)=0 is adjacent to at least one vertex y with f(y)=2. The weight of a Roman dominating function is defined to be f(V)=∑xVf(x), and the minimum weight of a Roman dominating function on a graph G is called the Roman domination number of G. In this paper we first answer an open question mentioned in [E.J. Cockayne, P.A. Dreyer Jr., S.M. Hedetniemi, S.T. Hedetniemi, Roman domination in graphs, Discrete Math. 278 (2004) 11-22] by showing that the Roman domination number of an interval graph can be computed in linear time. We then show that the Roman domination number of a cograph (and a graph with bounded cliquewidth) can be computed in linear time. As a by-product, we give a characterization of Roman cographs. It leads to a linear-time algorithm for recognizing Roman cographs. Finally, we show that there are polynomial-time algorithms for computing the Roman domination numbers of -free graphs and graphs with a d-octopus.  相似文献

A balanced vertex-coloring of a graph G is a function c from V(G) to {−1,0,1} such that ∑{c(v):vV(G)}=0. A subset U of V(G) is called a balanced set if U induces a connected subgraph and ∑{c(v):vU}=0. A decomposition V(G)=V1∪?∪Vr is called a balanced decomposition if Vi is a balanced set for 1≤ir.In this paper, the balanced decomposition number f(G) of G is introduced; f(G) is the smallest integer s such that for any balanced vertex-coloring c of G, there exists a balanced decomposition V(G)=V1∪?∪Vr with |Vi|≤s for 1≤ir. Balanced decomposition numbers of some basic families of graphs such as complete graphs, trees, complete bipartite graphs, cycles, 2-connected graphs are studied.  相似文献

In this paper we define the vertex-cover polynomial Ψ(G,τ) for a graph G. The coefficient of τr in this polynomial is the number of vertex covers V′ of G with |V′|=r. We develop a method to calculate Ψ(G,τ). Motivated by a problem in biological systematics, we also consider the mappings f from {1, 2,…,m} into the vertex set V(G) of a graph G, subject to f−1(x)f−1(y)≠ for every edge xy in G. Let F(G,m) be the number of such mappings f. We show that F(G,m) can be determined from Ψ(G,τ).  相似文献

We establish for which weighted graphs H homomorphism functions from multigraphs G to H are specializations of the Tutte polynomial of G, answering a question of Freedman, Lovász and Schrijver. We introduce a new property of graphs called “q-state Potts uniqueness” and relate it to chromatic and Tutte uniqueness, and also to “chromatic–flow uniqueness”, recently studied by Duan, Wu and Yu.  相似文献

Let G=(V,E) be a graph. A function f:V→{−1,+1} defined on the vertices of G is a signed total dominating function if the sum of its function values over any open neighborhood is at least one. A signed total dominating function f is minimal if there does not exist a signed total dominating function g, fg, for which g(v)≤f(v) for every vV. The weight of a signed total dominating function is the sum of its function values over all vertices of G. The upper signed total domination number of G is the maximum weight of a minimal signed total dominating function on G. In this paper we present a sharp upper bound on the upper signed total domination number of an arbitrary graph. This result generalizes previous results for regular graphs and nearly regular graphs.  相似文献

The neighbourhood-width of a graph G=(V,E) is introduced in [F. Gurski, Linear layouts measuring neighbourhoods in graphs, Discrete Math. 306 (15) (2006) 1637-1650.] as the smallest integer k such that there is a linear layout ?:V→{1,…,|V|} such that for every 1?i<|V| the vertices u with ?(u)?i can be divided into at most k subsets each members having the same neighbours with respect to the vertices v with ?(v)>i.In this paper we show first bounds for the neighbourhood-width of general graphs, caterpillars, trees and grid graphs and give applications of the layout parameter neighbourhood-width in graph drawing and VLSI design.  相似文献

We prove there exists a function f(k) such that for every f(k)-connected graph G and for every edge eE(G), there exists an induced cycle C containing e such that GE(C) is k-connected. This proves a weakening of a conjecture of Lovász due to Kriesell.  相似文献
