The polymerization of acrylamide in mixed micellar solutions of surfactants, initiated by NaHSO3 has been studied at 20 and 3Q° C with time variable method of thermokinetics for 1. 5-order reaction. The results indicate that the mixed micellar systems of cationic or anionic with zwitterionic surfactants (SLS/ CTAB, SLS/ TTAB, SLS/ SDS) and cationic with nonionic surfactants (Brij 357sol; CTAB, Bri-J35/TTAB, Brij35/ DTAB) have catalytic effect on the polymerization in the order, at 20° C. SLS/ SDS SLS/ TTAB SLS/ CTAB Brij35/ CTAB at 30° C SLS/ SDS SLS/ TTAB≈ / CTAB Bri-j35/ DTAB= sBrij35/ TTAB as Brij35/ CTAB, while Brij35/ SDS mixed micellar system has inhibition. These effects are attributed to the effect of the Stern layer of mixed micelles on the step of initiator (HSOT) to form free radical.

The interactions between oppositely charged surfactant-polymer systems have been studied using surface tension and conductivity measurements and the dependence of aggregation phenomenon over the polyelectrolyte concentration and chain length of cationic ATAB surfactants, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB), and dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB) have been investigated. It was observed that cationic surfactants induce cooperative binding with anionic polyelectrolyte at critical aggregation concentration (cac). The cac values of ATAB surfactants in the presence of anionic polyelectrolyte, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (NaCMC), are considerably lower than their critical micelle concentration (cmc). After the complete complexation, free micelles are formed at the apparent critical micelle concentration (acmc), which is slightly higher in polyelectrolyte aqueous solution than in pure water. Among the cationic surfactants (i.e., CTAB, TTAB, and DTAB), DTAB was found to have least interaction with NaCMC. Surfactants with longer tail size strongly favor the interaction, indicating the dependence of aggregation phenomenon on the structure, morphology, and tail length of the surfactant.   相似文献

We have investigated dilute aqueous solutions of an anionic polymer (carboxymethylcellulose) mixed with cationic surfactants of different chain lengths (dodecyl to octadecyl trimethylammonium bromides: DTAB, TTAB, CTAB and OTAB). The structures of the concentrated phases formed above the precipitation threshold were studied by X-ray diffraction. Different body-centred cubic structures with space groups Pm3n were observed in the presence of surfactant with a short aliphatic chain (DTAB), despite the fact that the polymer persistence length is comparable to the repeat distance of the structure (5 nm). For larger surfactant chain lengths (TTAB and CTAB), the structure of the precipitates can be either cubic (Pm3n) or 2D hexagonal depending on the initial surfactant and polymer concentrations. For still larger chain length (OTAB), the structure becomes lamellar. This structural evolution from micellar cubic towards 2D hexagonal and lamellar is attributed to the decrease of the local curvature of the surfactant aggregates, as observed for flexible synthetic polymers and short DNA fragments under similar conditions. Furthermore, the structure of the bulk complexes formed just below the precipitation threshold anticipates the structure seen in the precipitated phases.  相似文献

Mixed micellization behavior of dimeric cationic surfactant ethanediyl-1,2-bis (dimethyldodecylammonium bromide) (12-2-12) with a series of monomeric cationic surfactants dodecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB), and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) has been studied in aqueous and aqueous polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solutions at 298.15, 308.15, and 318.15 K, respectively, using conductometric method. Various thermodynamic parameters like mixed micelle concentration (Cm), micelle mole fraction (X1), interaction parameter (β), and free energy of mixing (ΔGex) of the mixed systems have been determined and analyzed using Rubingh's regular solution theory. The results indicate that in aqueous solutions the binary mixtures of 12-2-12 with DTAB/TTAB behave nonideally with mutual synergism whereas that with CTAB shows almost ideal behavior at 298.15 K. At 318.15 K, all these binary mixtures exhibit antagonistic behavior. The effect of variation in chain length of alkyltrimethyl ammonium bromide surfactants on the interactions with 12-2-12 have also been evaluated and discussed.  相似文献

We study the compaction of genomic DNA by a series of alkyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactants having different hydrocarbon chain lengths n: dodecyl-(DTAB, n=12), tetradecyl-(TTAB, n=14) and hexadecyl-(CTAB, n=16), in the absence and in the presence of negatively charged silica nanoparticles (NPs) with a diameter in the range 15-100 nm. We show that NPs greatly enhance the ability of all cationic surfactants to induce DNA compaction and that this enhancement increases with an increase in NP diameter. In the absence of NP, the ability of cationic surfactants to induce DNA compaction increases with an increase in n. Conversely, in the presence of NPs, the enhancement of DNA compaction increases with a decrease in n. Therefore, although CTAB is the most efficient surfactant to compact DNA, maximal enhancement by NPs is obtained for the largest NP diameter (here, 100 nm) and the smallest surfactant chain length (here, DTAB). We suggest a mechanism where the preaggregation of surfactants on NP surface mediated by electrostatic interactions promotes cooperative binding to DNA and thus enhances the ability of surfactants to compact DNA. We show that the amplitude of enhancement is correlated with the difference between the surfactant concentration corresponding to aggregation on DNA alone and that corresponding to the onset of adsorption on nanoparticles.

The adsorption and condensed film formation on mercury at the negative potential region for binary mixtures of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) is studied in KBr at various temperatures from 5 to 45 °C. The formation of the CTAB condensed film is hindered with the addition of DTAB and TTAB. There are interactions between unlike hydrophobic chains. The strong interactions between the CTAB molecules do not take place when DTAB or TTAB is present above a certain concentration. This hindering is more pronounced in the case of TTAB compared to the same DTAB concentration, i.e. the increase of the chain length hinders the film formation. The initially adsorbed molecules play a templating role in the kinetics of the film formation and in the self-assembling of the molecules. The initial induction time strongly depends on the temperature. The less surface active CTAB can hinder the OTAB film formation in binary mixtures. Also, increased interaction between OTAB and CTAB can be observed, indicating synergy effects in the film formation in some cases. The temperature range that the film is formed can be changed using mixtures of surfactants. Thus, the development of the film can become impossible, more difficult or even easier. Hysteresis phenomena are observed. The capacity versus time curves in the case that condensed film is formed are treated with the Avrami plot formulation, giving values between 1.5 and 2 indicating a progressive one dimensional nucleation with constant growth rate or a decrease of the nucleation rate during the overall film formation. There is generally a marked effect of the chain length of the alkyl chain on the film formation.  相似文献

Aqueous ethylene glycol (ethane 1,2 diol) as a green mobile phase has been used for thin layer chromatographic (TLC) studies of cationic surfactants on alumina layers. Nineteen solvent systems were used to examine the mobility of the surfactants and to discover the best TLC system for the selective separation of dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) from multi-component mixture of other surfactants. Among the TLC systems studied, M3 (ethylene glycol: water, 8:2) was best for achieving the selective separation of DTAB from multi-component mixture of other surfactants because in this mobile phase mobility of all surfactants except DTAB were insignificant. Effect of organic additives in aqueous ethylene glycol mobile phase on the mobility of surfactants was examined. The results obtained on laboratory made alumina TLC plates and commercially available precoated alumina HPTLC plates were compared. The lower limits of detection of DTAB, CPC, CTAB, HDTAC, and TTAB were 0.02, 0.05, 0.04, 0.06, or 0.08 µg per zone respectively. The resolution of mixture of cationic surfactants was also examined in the presence metal cations as an impurity in the analyzed sample.  相似文献

We investigated the interaction between an anionic polyelectrolyte (carboxymethylcellulose) and cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, and CTAB) at the air/water interface, using surface tension, ellipsometry, and Brewster angle microscopy techniques. At low surfactant concentration, a synergistic phenomenon is observed due to the co-adsorption of polyelectrolyte/surfactant complexes at the interface, which decreases the surface tension. When the surfactant critical aggregation concentration (cac) is reached, the adsorption saturates and the thickness of the adsorbed monolayer remains constant until another characteristic surfactant concentration, C0, is reached, at which all the polymer charges are bound to surfactant in bulk. Above C0, the absorbed monolayer becomes much thicker, suggesting adsorption of bulk aggregates, which have become more hydrophobic due to charge neutralization.  相似文献

Understanding the interaction between silicate ions and surfactants is critical for the design and development of mesoporous siliceous materials. We examined the interaction between sodium silicate ions and three different cationic surfactants [namely, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB), and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)] and an anionic surfactant [sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)] in dilute solution at room temperature. From the combination of several techniques, such as conductometric and potentiometric titrations, dynamic light scattering, and isothermal titration calorimetry, the phase behavior of the sodium silicate and CTAB system was determined. We observed that the aggregation behavior of the silicate-CTAB system is similar to that of a polymer-surfactant system. The formation of the silicate-CTAB complex is induced by the adsorption of SiOH and SiO- groups, aided by CTAB unimers. The electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction are the dominant forces controlling the formation of silicate-CTAB complexes. When these complexes are saturated with CTAB unimers, free CTAB micelles are then produced. TEM micrographs revealed that a stable Si-O-Si network is absent within the silicate-CTAB complexes, and surprisingly, stable silicate-CTAB complexes with ordered structure were observed. The present finding is important for understanding the interaction between silicate and surfactant in the synthesis of mesoporous structure in the dilute solution regime.  相似文献

Three alkyltrimethylammonium bromides (i.e., dodecyl-, tetradecyl-, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide or DTAB, TTAB, and CTAB, respectively) were used to remove a blue solvent-based ink from a printed surface of high-density polyethylene bottles. Either an increase in the alkyl chain length or the surfactant concentration was found to increase the deinking efficiency. Complete deinking was achieved at concentrations about 3, 8, and 24 times of the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of CTAB, TTAB, and DTAB, respectively. For CTAB, ink removal started at a concentration close to or less than its CMC and increased appreciably at concentrations greater than its CMC, while for TTAB and DTAB, significant deinking was only achieved at concentrations much greater than their CMCs. Corresponding to the deinking efficiency of CTAB in the CMC region, the zeta potential of ink particles was found to increase with increasing alkyl chain length and concentration of the surfactants, which later leveled off at some higher concentrations. Wettability of the surfactants on an ink surface increased with increasing alkyl chain length and concentration of the surfactants. Lastly, solubilization of ink binder in the surfactant micelles was found to increase with increasing alkyl chain length and surfactant concentration. We conclude that adsorption of surfactant on the ink pigment is crucial to deinking due to modification of wettability, zeta potential, pigment/water interfacial tension, and dispersion stability. Solubilization of binder (epoxy) into micelles is necessary for good deinking because the dissolution of the binder is required before the pigment particles can be released from the polymer surface.  相似文献

The redox reaction between tris(1,10-phenanthroline)iron(II), [Fe(phen)3]2+, and azido-pentacyanocobaltate(III), [Co(CN)5N3]3? was investigated in three cationic surfactants: dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in the presence of 0.1?M NaCl at 35°C. Second-order rate constant in the absence and presence of surfactant, kw and kψ, respectively, were obtained in the concentration ranges DTAB?=?0???4.667?×?10?4?mol?dm?3, TTAB?=?0–9.364?×?10?5?mol?dm?3, CTAB?=?0???6.220?×?10?5?mol?dm?3. Electron transfer rate was inhibited by the surfactants with premicelllar activity. Inhibition factors, kw/kψ followed the trend CTAB?>?TTAB?>?DTAB with respect to the surfactant concentrations used. The magnitudes of the binding constants obtained suggest significant electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Activation parameters ΔH, ΔS, and Ea have larger positive values in the presence of surfactants than in surfactant-free medium. The electron transfer is proposed to proceed via outer-sphere mechanism in the presence of the surfactants.  相似文献

The interaction behavior of DNA with different types of hydroxylated cationic surfactants has been studied. Attention was directed to how the introduction of hydroxyl substituents at the headgroup of the cationic surfactants affects the compaction of DNA. The DNA-cationic surfactant interaction was investigated at different charge ratios by several methods like UV melting, ethidium bromide exclusion, and gel electrophoresis. Studies show that there is a discrete transition in the DNA chain from extended coils (free chain) to a compact form and that this transition does not depend substantially on the architecture of the headgroup. However, the accessibility of DNA to ethidium bromide is preserved to a significantly larger extent for the more hydrophilic surfactants. This was discussed in terms of surfactant packing. Observations are interpreted to reflect that the surfactants with more substituents have a larger headgroup and therefore form smaller micellar aggregates; these higher curvature aggregates lead to a less efficient, "patch-like" coverage of DNA. The more hydrophilic surfactants also presented a significantly lower cytotoxicity, which is important for biotechnological applications.  相似文献

Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) of three cationic surfactants was performed on silica TLC plates with various solvent systems. The mutual separation of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) was achieved on silica TLC plates with ethanol: 1% aqueous ammonium chloride (4:6, v/v) as an eluent. Effects of cations and anions in the mobile phase on mobility and separation of CPC, TTAB and DTAB were examined. The interference due to the presence of metal cations as impurities on the resolution in the mixture of CPC, TTAB and DTAB was also examined. The limits of detection of CPC, TTAB and DTAB estimated were 0.015, 0.031 and 0.062 μg zone−1, respectively. The developed method was utilized to identify these surfactants in different spiked water samples after their preliminary separation.  相似文献

Pseudo‐first‐order rate constants have been determined for the nucleophilic substitution reactions of p‐nitrophenyl acetate with p‐chlorophenoxide (4‐ClC6H4O?) and N‐phenylbenzohydroxamate (C6H5CON(C6H5)O?) ions in phosphate buffer (pH 7.7) at 27°C. The effect of cationic, (CTAB, TTAB, DTAB), anionic (SDS), and nonionic (Brij‐35) surfactants has been studied. The kobs value increases upon addition of CTAB and TTAB. The effect of DTAB and other surfactants on the reaction is not very significant. The micellar catalysis and α‐effect shown by hydroxamate ion have been explained. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We use agarose gel electrophoresis to characterize how the monovalent catioinic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) compacts double-stranded DNA, which is detected as a reduction in electrophoretic DNA velocity. The velocity reaches a plateau at a ratio R = 1.8 of CTAB to DNA-phosphate charges, i.e., above the neutralization point, and the complexes retain a net negative charge at least up to R = 200. Condensation experiments on a mixture of two DNA sizes show that the complexes formed contain only one condensed DNA molecule each. These CTAB-DNA globules were further characterized by time-resolved measurements of their velocity inside the gel, which showed that CTAB does not dissociate during the migration but possibly upon entry into the gel. Using the Ogston-model for electrophoresis of spherical particles, the measured in-gel velocity of the globule is quantitatively consistent with CTAB having two opposite effects, reduction of both the electrophoretic charge and DNA coil size. In the case of CTAB the two effects nearly cancel, which can explain why opposite velocity shifts (globule faster than uncomplexed DNA) have been observed with some catioinic condensation agents. Dissociation of the complexes by addition of anionic surfactants was also studied. The DNA release from the globule was complete at a mixing ratio between anionic and cationic surfactants equal to 1, in agreement with equilibrium studies. Circular DNA retained its supercoiling, and this demonstrates a lack of DNA nicking in the compaction-release cycle which is important in DNA transfection and purification applications.  相似文献

Radiochemical approach for the investigation of partitioning and adsorption of surfactants at water-oil interfaces has been developed. The so-called “scintillation phase method” is based on the introduction of tritium labeled surfactant in an aqueous phase of the water-oil system followed by measuring radioactivity of the whole system. Partition coefficients and the value of adsorption at water-non-polar liquid interfaces of homologous series of alkyltrimethylammonium bromides (DTAB, TTAB and CTAB) have been experimentally determined by means of scintillation phase method. The influence of non-ionic surfactants on TTAB adsorption has also been studied.  相似文献

The interactions of two partially charged ampholytic terpolymers [consisting of acrylamide, sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulphonate, and 2-(methacryloyloxyethyl)trimethylammonium chloride segments with molar compositions 80/12/08 and 80/08/12] and two fully charged ampholytic copolymers (containing only the two latter comonomers with molar compositions of 80/20 and 50/50), with cationic surfactants [tetradecyl- trimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)] and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), are investigated. The studies include phase behaviour (swelling, solubilisation, precipitation), viscometry, electrical conductivity, and potentiometry (bromide ion and surfactant ion-specific electrodes). The 80/08/12 and 80/12/08 polyampholytes swell in water and are solubilised in the presence of cationic or anionic surfactants above a particular surfactant concentration that is proportional to the polymer concentration. The polyampolyte 80/20 is soluble in water but precipitates in the presence of TTAB, whereas 50/50 is insoluble in water and in the presence of TTAB, but is solubilised upon addition of SDS. The results indicate that TTAB binds to 80/12/08 with little or no cooperativity. Solubilisation appears to be the result of the increasing polyelectrolyte character of the polyampholyte upon neutralisation of its charged sites by bound surfactant ions of opposite charge. The binding of TTAB by the 50/50 polyampholyte is very weak and non-cooperative. In contrast, 80/20 binds TTAB cooperatively, much like a true polyelectrolyte-surfactant system of opposing charges. In particular, the binding is characterised by the existence of a critical aggregation concentration. A partial phase diagram for this system has been determined from the TTA+-electrode potential data. The behaviour of true polyelectrolytes and polyampholytes, with respect to their interaction with surfactants, is discussed. Received: 22 July 1998 Accepted: 14 September 1998  相似文献

The interaction between cationic surfactants (hexadecyl and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide) and gelatin was characterized by measuring the circular dichroism. The interaction between the cationic surfactants and gelatin is weak in comparison to that of anionic surfactants. When the concentration of cationic surfactants is sufficiently low, refolding of the gelatin-strands to the triple helical structure by rechilling the solution from 298 K to 283 K is complete. The triple helical content of the solution is affected more strongly by the cationic surfactants in acidic solution than at pHs 7 or 10. The interaction depends on the apolar group of the surfactant and is found to be stronger for DTAB than for CTAB at 298 K. Coagulation of the hydrophobic gelatin-cationic surfactant complexes does not comprise that pan of gelatin which is able to refold the triple helical structure. Therefore, the gelatin-strands of lower molecular weights are thought to react favorably with the surfactant ions.  相似文献
