We present an investigation of the spin-Peierls transition atT SP=14.5 K in polycrystalline CuGeO3 through specific-heat and thermal-expansion measurements. Clear second-order phase-transition anomalies are found in both properties atT SP, although only a small entropy of S0.1 Rn2 is released at the transition. Most of the entropy is released atT SP<T<150 K, where the temperature dependence of the magnetic contribution to the specific heat as well as the thermal expansion exhibit extrema atT *40 K. These are caused by one-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations along the Cu chains, possibly accompanied by structural fluctuations. Using Ehrenfest's relation, a hydrostatic pressure coefficient (T SP/p)p0 (0.45±0.06) K/kbar is derived.  相似文献

We report the results of ac-susceptibility and dc-magnetization measurements for HyGd2CuO4 (0y0.54). It is shown thatH doping lowers the weak ferromagnetic component in the material. The distinct hysteresis loops observed atT=77 K for both non- and hydrogenated samples change its shape withy. The magnetic ordering temperatures T N Cu and T N Gd , as determined from the temperature dependencies of ac-susceptibility, remain unchanged with sample's hydrogenation. This result seems to indicate that extra electrons are not doped onto the Cu-O planes of Gd2CuO4. The frequency dependencies ofx(, T) andx(, T) for bothy=0 andy=0.15 samples are analysed., The maximums ofx andx found at about 200K are considered in terms of susceptibility dependence on the spin-lattice relaxation time (). The anomalies in ac-susceptibility found recently in Gd2CuO4 atT a=8 K andT b=9.5 K decrease significantly withy. Results are discussed in the context of available data on 214T-type compounds.  相似文献

A theorem for convolution integrals is proved and then applied to extend the second zero-separation theorem to the bridge functionb(r) and direct-correlation tail functionsd(r). This theorem allows us to exactly relateb(r)/r andd(r)/ratr=0 for the hard-sphere fluid to the contact value of the radial distribution functiong(r) atr= +. From this we obtain immediately the exact values of b(r)/r and d(r)/r atr=0 through second order in number density . Using our results to compare the exact and Percus-Yevick (PY) bridge function, we find that they differ significantly. After obtaining the bridge function and tail function and their derivatives atr=0 andr= through, we suggest new approximations forb(0) andd(0) as well as an analytical integral-equation theory to improve the PY approximation in the pure hard-sphere fluid. The major deficiency of that approximation has been its poor assessment of the cavity function inside the hard-core region. Our theory remedies this defect in a way that yields ay(r) that is self-consistent with respct to the virial and compressibility relations and also the two zero-separation relations involvingy(r) and its spatial derivative atr=0.  相似文献

Real glass transitions, where activated processes are included, are analysed near Whitney fold and cusp singularities. In particular the temperature dependence of the viscosity is studied. For sufficiently strongly coupled systems there is close to a fold singularity located atT=T c , a crossover from an algebraic divergence (TT c ) forT>T c , to an Arrhenius dependence exp(E/k B T) forT<T c . If a parameter vector specifying the system also passes close to a cusp singularity, atT 0<T c , there may be a temperature region where the viscosity also shows Fogel-Fulcher like dependence. The results for the viscosity are intimately connected with the dynamics for the so-called -relaxation process, where relaxation occurs via a fractal time process in the delevant time region.  相似文献

The thickness dependence of the magnetic band structure of ultrathin, epitaxial Ni(111)/W(110) layers has been studied by spin and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The changes of the spin-resolved photoemission intensities upon reducing the layer thickness depend strongly on the wavevector along the -L line of the Brillouin zone. The measured exchange splitting atk 1/3(-L) andk 1/2(-L) is found to be independent of the layer thickness for layers consisting of 3 or more atomic layers, while decreases rapidly with the layer thickness atk2/3(-L). This behavior is very similar to the temperature dependence of the spin-resolved photoemission spectra of bulk Ni(111) at the samek-points.  相似文献

Nonstationary Markov chains and convergence of the annealing algorithm   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We study the asymptotic behavior as timet + of certain nonstationary Markov chains, and prove the convergence of the annealing algorithm in Monte Carlo simulations. We find that in the limitt + , a nonstationary Markov chain may exhibit phase transitions. Nonstationary Markov chains in general, and the annealing algorithm in particular, lead to biased estimators for the expectation values of the process. We compute the leading terms in the bias and the variance of the sample-means estimator. We find that the annealing algorithm converges if the temperatureT(t) goes to zero no faster thanC/log(t/t 0) ast+, with a computable constantC andt 0 the initial time. The bias and the variance of the sample-means estimator in the annealing algorithm go to zero likeO(t1+) for some 0<1, with =0 only in very special circumstances. Our results concerning the convergence of the annealing algorithm, and the rate of convergence to zero of the bias and the variance of the sample-means estimator, provide a rigorous procedure for choosing the optimal annealing schedule. This optimal choice reflects the competition between two physical effects: (a) The adiabatic effect, whereby if the temperature is loweredtoo abruptly the system may end up not in a ground state but in a nearby metastable state, and (b) the super-cooling effect, whereby if the temperature is loweredtoo slowly the system will indeed approach the ground state(s) but may do so extremely slowly.  相似文献

By introducing a specific type of perturbation,A, in the Hamiltonian, we define a class of gently perturbed states, ,A, of a canonical ensemble, . The perturbations are chosen so as to preserve a relationship of the form ,A constant ×. Applications in ergodic theory and phase transitions are described.  相似文献

A variety of rigorous inequalities for critical exponents is proved. Most notable is the low-temperature Josephson inequalitydv +2 2–. Others are 1 1 +v, 1 1 , 1,d 1 + 1/ (for d),dv, 3 + (for d), 4 , and 2m 2m+2 (form 2). The hypotheses vary; all inequalities are true for the spin-1/2 Ising model with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic pair interactions.NSF Predoctoral Fellow (1976–1979). The impurity contribution to the resistivity in zero field (T) of dilute hexagonal single crystals of ZnMn, CdMn and MgMn has been studied in the mK range on samples cut parallel () and perpendicular () to thec-axis, using a SQUID technique for the measurements. Typical spin glass behavior is found in (T) as well as (T) for all alloys, with Kondo like logarithmic increases at higher temperatures and maxima atT m at lower temperatures, indicating the influence of impurity interactions. The differences in the corresponding isotropic resistivity poly(T) between the three systems can qualitatively be understood within the framework of a theoretical model by Larsen, describing (T) as a function of universal quantitiesT/T K and RKKY/T K , where RKKY is the RKKY-interaction strength andT K the Kondo temperature. With respect to the two lattice directions studied, the behavior of (T and (T is anisotropic in the Kondo regime as well as in the range where ordering becomes important. While the anisotropy in the Kondo slope can be understood by an anisotropic unitarity limit, the understanding of the anisotropy in region where impurity interactions are important remains problematic.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. S. The thermodynamic properties of the mean spherical (MSA), Percus-Yevick (PY), and hypernetted-chain (HNC) approximations are derived by a simple and unified approach by considering the RPA free-energy functionalF and employing an Ewald-type identity. It is demonstrated that with decreasing relative contribution of the hard-core insertion to the thermodynamic functions, the MSA changes its nature from PY-like to HNC-like, withF changing its role from excess pressure to excess free energy, respectively. It is found that the condition of continuity of the MSA pair functions is equivalent to a stationarity condition forF and leads to thermodynamic consistency between the virial and energy equations of state for the (thus defined) soft-MSA (SMSA), withF playing the role of the excess free energy. It is shown that the PY-compressibility and virial equations of state forD-dimensional hard spheres may be simply obtained one from the other without knowing any details of the solution of the model. Using this relation we find an indication that the PY approximation for hard spheres becomes less accurate with increasing dimensionality. A general variational formulation is presented for the application of the MSA for soft potentials, and results for the one-component plasma are discussed and extended. On sabbatical leave from the Nuclear Research Center-Negev, P.O. Finite squareL×L Ising lattices with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor interaction are simulated using the Swendsen-Wang cluster algorithm. Both thermal properties (internal energyU, specific heatC, magnetization |M|, susceptibility) and percolation cluster properties relating to the physical clusters, namely the Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters (percolation probability P , percolation susceptibility p, cluster size distributionn l) are evaluated, paying particular attention to finite-size effects. It is shown that thermal properties can be expressed entirely in terms of cluster properties, P being identical to |M| in the thermodynamic limit, while finite-size corrections differ. In contrast, p differs from even in the thermodynamic limit, since a fluctuation in the size of the percolating net contributes to, but not to p. NearT c the cluster size distribution has the scaling properties as hypothesized by earlier phenomenological theories. We also present a generalization of the Swendsen-Wang algorithm allowing one to cross over continuously to the Glauber dynamics.  相似文献

No Heading The uncertainty in the measured fluorescence decay lifetimes of 30 nm particles of YAG:Cc was used to evaluate the predictions of a novel form of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle suggested by de Sabbata and Sivaram, T t h/k. The worst-case uncertainty in temperature of 4.5 °K (as derived from the relationship between temperature and lifetime) and the measured uncertainty in decay lifetime, 0.45 ns, yielded an internal estimate of T t = 2.0 × 10–9 °K s, which is 263 times larger than /k = 7.6 × 10–12 °K s. An external estimate of T t = 4.5 × 1011 °K s (which is = 6 times /k) is derived from the independently measured uncertainty in the temperature of the sample and the experimentally determined uncertainty in lifetime. These results could be low by a factor of 5.6 if signal averaging must be taken into account. If valid, the findings are consistent with the predictions of this version of the uncertainty principle and they imply the existence of a type of thermal quantum limit.  相似文献

By an example of a two-dimensional hydrodynamic system, second-order Langevin equations with two correlated noise sources are investigated. It is shown that the asymptotic expression (t) for the stationary distribution functionP depends on the order in which the limiting transitions;t andN 220 (N 22 is the power of one of the noises) are made. Using the method of local expansions in trigonometric form, approximate expressions are written for the distribution functionP at small but finiteN 22 tending atN 220 to the known exact solution.  相似文献

We present a systematic perturbation calculation up to the 4th order in the interaction for a metallic-glas-model with an anisotropic coupling of the conduction electrons to a local two-level-system. The logarithmic-(infrared-)divergent terms for the electronic lifetime are suppressed by exponentially small prefactors in the region I (ET) whereas in the region II (ET) they survive in the general case of non-commuting elastic and inelastic couplings in the Hamiltonian, whereE denotes the level-splittings of the local-system, the excitation energy of the conduction electrons above the Fermi level, andT the thermal energy.  相似文献

A short review of theoretical and experimental studies concerning the photoexcited florescence and Raman scattering of light for a substance in a space containing small material bodies is presented. Calculations of the radiativetransition probability for atoms (molecules) in the vicinity of bodies with a size much smaller than the light wavelength are performed. The probabilities of the singlephoton and doublephoton transitions are shown to increase by factors of 9 and 81 in the vicinity of a nanosize sphere with dielectric constant ||\ 1. The probability of a radiative transition in the vicinity of the vertex of a conic needle bearing up against a plane (both with || 1) increases by factors of (/R in)2 and (/R in)4 for singlephoton and doublephoton transitions, respectively (R in is the curvature radius for the needle vertex). This theoretical result is suggested as an explanation of the effect of increasing the radiation process intensity in the experiments carried out in the studies cited below.  相似文献

Based on the (relativistic) Maxwell equations with displacement current E/t, the initial-boundary-value problem for the compression of an initially homogeneous magnetic fieldB={0,B(x,t),0} between a fixed liner atx=0 and a detonation-driven liner atx=s(t) is solved analytically. By homogenizing the boundary conditions at the moving boundary, the transient electromagnetic fields are shown to be a superposition of quasistatic elliptic (E/t=0) and hyperbolic (E/t0) wave solutions. The wave equation is solved by a Fourier expansion in time-dependent eigenfunctionsf n =f n [nx/s(t)] for the variable region 0xs(t), where the Fourier amplitudes n (t) are determined by coupled differential equations of second order. It is concluded that the conventional elliptic flux compression theories (E/t=0) hold approximately for nonrelativistic liner speeds , whereas the hyperbolic theory (E/t0) is valid for arbitrary liner speeds .  相似文献

The error probability for a coherent optical heterodyne FSK system with a limiter-discriminator-integrator (LDI) detector is analysed. The analysis includes laser quantum phase noise, the correlated receiver additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), Gaussian narrow-band IF filtering and intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by it. It is shown that, for 1 dBEb/N 0penalty at bit error rate (BER) 10–9, (i) the normalized IF beat spectral linewidth T0.35% for frequency deviation ratioh=0.5(MSK), and T0.5% forh=0.7 (the receiver is insensitive to laser quantum phase noise ath=1.0, if ISI is not included.); (ii) if ISI is incorporated, T0.15% forh=0.5, T0.5% forh=0.7, both with 3dB bandwidth-bit period product (3.0>BT1.5), and T0.5% forh=1.0 with BT1.0 ifT0.35% when ISI exists,h=0.7 is optimum;h=1.0 otherwise.  相似文献

For an Ising ferromagnet with nearest-neighbour interactions of strengthK and surface magnetic fieldh, the surface free energy in the presence of a positively (or negatively) magnetized zero-field bulk phase is shown to be analytic inh for Reh<K–/, where =2.96 ... and is the inverse temperature. This puts the lower boundK–/ on the values ofh at which wetting and layering transitions can take place.  相似文献

We consider several statistical models defined on the Farey fractions. Two of these models may be regarded as spin chains, with long-range interactions, while another arises in the study of multifractals associated with chaotic maps exhibiting intermittency. We prove that these models all have the same free energy. Their thermodynamic behavior is determined by the spectrum of the transfer operator (Ruelle–Perron–Frobenius operator), which is defined using the maps (presentation functions) generating the Farey tree. The spectrum of this operator was completely determined by Prellberg. It follows that these models have a second-order phase transition with a specific heat divergence of the form C [ ln2 ]–1. The spin chain models are also rigorously known to have a discontinuity in the magnetization at the phase transition.  相似文献

The variation with energyE of the X-ray absorption coefficient (E) and that of the anomalous dispersion correctionf(E) at the Cu-K-edge have been measured under identical experimental conditions using the X-ray interferometer installed in the Hamburger Synchrotronstrahlungslabor (HASYLAB) at the storage ring DORIS of DESY. The energy resolution achieved is E2 eV atE=9 keV. As a result of the extreme energy resolution in the near edge region up to about 60 eV above the edge, very detailed fine structures are observed in both (E) andf(E) which are tentatively attributed to multiple scattering resonances occuring in the scattering of the low energy photoelectron by neighbour atoms. The simultaneous measurement of (E) andf(E) opens the possibility to cross-correlate the experimental results with the help of Kramers-Kronig relations.  相似文献
