Respiratory function during speaking and singing was investigated in six male professional country singers. Function was studied using magnetometers to transduce anteroposterior diameter changes of the rib cage and abdomen while subjects performed various respiratory maneuvers, speaking activities, and singing activities. Results indicated that respiratory behavior during speaking was generally the same as that of other normal subjects. Respiratory behavior during singing resembled that of speaking. Discussion includes comparison of respiratory performance of present singers with untrained singers and classically trained singers. Implications are offered regarding how the results might be applied to the prevention of voice disorders by education and training of country singers.  相似文献

Respiratory and glottal efficiency measures were collected from a pool of 40 classically trained singers with normal larynges. All singers had ?3 years of formal classical voice training and were active professional solo classical singers. Mean flow rates were obtained from all subjects to assess glottal efficiency. Additionally, maximum phonation times and phonation quotients were obtained from a subset of the singers. Pulmonary function test data on forced expiratory volume, forced vital capacity, and forced expiratory flow were obtained for all subjects. Results were compared with published normal values, not specifically derived from trained singers, used commonly in voice laboratoires. Differences were found, suggesting the need for separate normative data to be used for evaluation of the vocal athlete.  相似文献

Breathing strategy is generally regarded as an important factor in operatic singing, because it is assumed to affect phonation. If so, professional singers should exhibit well-controlled, replicable breathing movements when repeating the same phrase. The purpose of the present study was to investigate to what extent professional opera singers show a consistent, exhalatory breathing behavior in a quasi-realistic concert situation. Respiratory movements were documented in 5 professional operatic singers, two women and three men, by means of respiratory inductive plethysmography. Comparison of respiratory data gathered from 3 renderings of the same phrases revealed high consistency with regard to lung volume (LV) behavior. The same applied to rib cage (RC) movements, suggesting a great relevance of RC control in singing. Consistency in abdominal wall (AW) movement was observed in 2 singers. These observations are in accordance with the idea that the breathing strategy plays an important role in voice production during singing. In addition, the correlation between LV changes, on the one hand, and RC and AW movements on the other, was examined. The contribution to LV changes from the RC and the AW varied across singers, thus suggesting that professional operatic singing does not request a uniform breathing strategy.  相似文献

Estimates of subglottal pressure in six professional male country singerswere obtained during the /p/ occlusion while the subjects spoke, sang a country tune, and sang the tune of the United States national anthem. The subglottal pressure values, which were very similar in both the speech-like and singing-mode syllables, usually measured below 45 cm of water column, but they ranged as high as 59 cm. The sound pressure level in singing was also measured and was lower than that discovered in classically trained singers at high subglottal pressures.  相似文献

This study is an attempt to ascertain if singers from different traditions and milieus follow similar aesthetic trends regardless of training and/or background. Cantors who sang the Jewish synagogue liturgy during the Golden Age of cantorial singing prior to World War II came from Eastern and Central Europe. For the most part, they were not trained in the classical Western opera tradition. They received training from choir leaders and other cantors and the training was primarily in the modes of synagogue chant. Cantors today receive the same kinds of training that opera singers receive, often from the same teachers. Four groups of singers, consisting of four singers in each group, were utilized in this study. The four groups are: historical opera singers, contemporary opera singers, historical cantors, and contemporary cantors. The historical opera singer recordings date from as early as 1909 to as late as 1939. It was not possible to determine the dates of the historical cantor recordings. However, the four cantors chosen for this group were active only to the 1940s. Contemporary samples were taken from CDs and/or live recordings and all the singers from the contemporary groups are either still active or were active in the 1960s through the 1980s and all of them are considered to be premier-level singers in their respective areas. The variables analyzed were: vibrato pulse rate, frequency variation of the vibrato pulse above and below the mean sustained sung frequency in percent, the mean amplitude variation of the amplitude vibrato pulse above and below the mean sustained amplitude in percent and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) power spectrum of the sustained samples. Results indicate that most of the significant differences were found between eras and not between groups within a time period.  相似文献

Singers are extremely conscious of health problems that affect their voices and well-being and often take an active role in seeking care for these problems. They frequently seek treatment from providers or with modalities considered “alternative” to traditional medical care. A survey of singers was completed to elucidate their attitudes and practices regarding “alternative modalities” of medical care. Frequently singers will self-medicate or take advice from people not well versed in the special needs of a professional voice user. They will fail to share this information with the physician when seeking “traditional” medical care. These practices may predispose the singer to suboptimal or even dangerous care. These results are discussed, as well as the implications for the medical physician treating the singer. The possible detrimental pharmacologic effects of “natural therapies” widely used by singers are presented, with special attention to the particular concerns for the professional singer  相似文献

Acoustic analysis was performed on recordings of 10 early music singers producing examples of vibrato, exaggerated vibrato, whole-tone trill, and trillo to obtain measures of oscillation rate, frequency extent, and jitter. Oscillation rates for vibrato, exaggerated vibrato, and trill were similar, but trillo rate was much faster. Average frequency extent of oscillation was 1 semitone (st) for vibrato, 2.21 st for exaggerated vibrato, 2.71 st for whole-tone trill, and 1.64 st for trillo. Jitter measures indicated that exaggerated vibrato had the most stable oscillations and trillo the least.  相似文献

Measures of the SFF, vocal intensity, phonational range, and habitualpitch level are reported for 39 professional singer and 39 nonsinger females, who were divided into three age groups (young, middle, and old age), with the professionals further divided into sopranos and altos. Each read the “Rainbow Passage” and spoke extemporaneously, from which measures of the SFF and vocal intensity were calculated; phonational range and habitual pitch levels were also determined. No significant differences were noted between the reading and speaking tasks. The SFF and intensity levels were significantly higher for the professionals in comparison to the nonsingers, but only for certain age groups. Moreover, whereas the nonsinger SFF levels varied significantly as a function of age, those for the professional singers did not. Although trends occurred, no significant differences were found for the mean phonational range or habitual pitch levels when the professionals and nonsingers were compared.  相似文献

A vocal health questionnaire was administered to three groups of professional singers and a “friendship-matched” group of nonsingers in Melbourne, Australia. The responses of 79 opera, 57 musical theatre and 31 contemporary (excluding rock) singers and 86 nonsingers were analysed. The questionnaire solicited information regarding biographical data speaking and singing voice-use behaviours, and vocal health over the previous 12 months in terms of experiences of vocal impairment, vocal disability, and handicap. Significant differences between singers and nonsingers in the prevalence and nature of voice problems were reported. Of the singers, 44% reported one or more occurrences of a diagnosed vocal condition compared to 21% of nonsingers and 69% of singers experienced vocal disability compared to only 41% of nonsingers, over the previous 12 months. In contrast, no significant differences were found between the three different styles of singers in their experience of vocal impairment, disability or handicap.  相似文献

Little literature is available on professional musical theater female singers, a population that regularly uses a wide variety of vocal qualities. This study tested the hypothesis that different vocal qualities cause observable specific configurations of muscular movements and structural changes of the larynx, hypopharynx, oral pharynx, and oral cavity for individual singers. Fiberoptic rigid and flexible endoscopic observation were used to determine visual analysis of such configurations. This study documents observable physiologic changes that were made by professional musical theater female singers in specific vocal qualities.  相似文献

A healthy voice depends upon healthy respiration. An understanding of respiratory function is essential in evaluating disorders that affect the voice. This review addresses the assessment of respiratory complaints by history, physical examination, laboratory testing, and endoscopic procedures. Allergy testing and pulmonary function testing are covered in detail. Special problems that confront the professional voice user, such as the need to optimize respiratory function even in mild disease states, exposure to environmental irritants, and the athletic demands of performance, are related specifically to respiratory function. The discussion of diagnosis and treatment of common ailments such as allergic rhinitis and bronchitis is directed toward treatment of the active singer.  相似文献

Amphoteric refraction of light ray at the interface between isotropic materials and anisotropic materials is analyzed. Depending on the incident angle, the refractive light ray can either refract positively or negatively. This amphoteric refraction phenomenon can be quite prevalent when the difference of the two principal refractive indices is large. The reflectance under various incident angles has also been calculated, and an experimental demonstration with a calcite crystal in air is presented.  相似文献

Hard or abrupt glottal attack (HGA) is one of the vocal behaviors often associated with benign lesion of the vocal folds. This study was designed to determine whether the frequency of HGA was different in hyperfunctional voice patients with and without vocal fold masses. One hundred and forty-seven subjects were studied. All subjects received a complete otolaryngological evaluation including strobovideolaryngoscopy, objective voice measures, and evaluation by a speech-language pathologist. Thirty-two patients were diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia (19 male, 13 female) without vocal fold masses. Fifty-seven patients were diagnosed with unilateral vocal fold masses (29 male, 28 female), most of which were cysts. Fifty-eight patients were diagnosed with bilateral vocal fold masses (13 male, 45 female). Of the 45 females with bilateral vocal fold masses. 26 had a vocal cyst and reactive nodule and 19 had bilateral vocal fold nodules. The control group was balanced and matched based on sex and on percentage of singers and nonsingers. It consisted of 49 subjects with no vocal fold pathology (20 male, 29 female). The group was composed of professional speakers, singers, and nonprofessional speakers. All voice disordered groups demonstrated higher frequencies of HGA than the control group. Differences were found between the male and female subjects in this study. No differences were found between the various disorders. Differences were also found between the subgroups of bilateral masses, where the bilateral nodules group presented a higher frequency of HGA than the cyst and contralateral reactive nodule.  相似文献

Objective, quantitative information is lacking in the medical community about actual working conditions for professional singers onstage, and moreover, about which conditions are safe. Physicians, speech-language pathologists, and speech scientists focusing on laryngology should have relevant information about the opera as workplace and the medical sequelae of unhealthy environments. We describe five toxic substances to which singers presenting to our clinics were exposed while working professionally on the opera stage: (1) aromatic diisocyanates, (2) penicillium frequentans in cork granulate, (3) formaldehyde in cork granulate, (4) cobalt and aluminum (pigment components), and (5) quartz sand capable of entering the alveolae. Biological considerations and clinical data for some subjects suggest a direct causal link between the exposures and the patients' complaints and findings. Our observations suggest that whenever singers complain about deleterious conditions such as dry and hot onstage climate or suspicion of the presence of harmful substances, the specific conditions existing in the theater in question should be investigated. Harmful substances are not only poorly tolerated by singers, but also they should be preventable.  相似文献

Off-resonance or spillover irradiation and incomplete saturation can introduce significant errors in the estimates of chemical rate constants measured by saturation-transfer magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Existing methods of correction are effective only over a limited parameter range. Here, a general approach of numerically solving the Bloch-McConnell equations to calculate exchange rates, relaxation times and concentrations for the saturation-transfer experiment is investigated, but found to require more measurements and higher signal-to-noise ratios than in vivo studies can practically afford. As an alternative, correction formulae for the reaction rate are provided which account for the expected parameter ranges and limited measurements available in vivo. The correction term is a quadratic function of experimental measurements. In computer simulations, the new formulae showed negligible bias and reduced the maximum error in the rate constants by about 3-fold compared to traditional formulae, and the error scatter by about 4-fold, over a wide range of parameters for conventional saturation transfer employing progressive saturation, and for the four-angle saturation-transfer method applied to the creatine kinase (CK) reaction in the human heart at 1.5 T. In normal in vivo spectra affected by spillover, the correction increases the mean calculated forward CK reaction rate by 6-16% over traditional and prior correction formulae.  相似文献

Starting from the existing works on the computation of information rates of channels with memory, we present a modification of these methods that can be used for continuous-state space models. The principle used for developing this alternative method is based on the partitioning of the continuous-state space into sub-sets, each one representing a state of a trellis, and the association between the states and the probability density functions built and updated on such sub-sets. The paper discusses the cases in which the method provides a computational advantage and it presents numerical results regarding the relevant example of the Wiener phase noise model.  相似文献

From postrecording interviews of professional singers, it was hypothesized that recording environments, i.e., sound-treated environment versus an auditorium, may induce different vocal behaviors. To test this hypothesis, three groups consisting of nonsingers, singers, and actors were recorded in two different recording environments: a sound-treated booth (IAC) and an auditorium (AUD). Three recordings were obtained from each participant: recording one (IAC) and two (AUD1) required the participants to read in a normal voice; recording three (AUD2) required participants to pretend that they were "performing" before a full house. Results indicated that only the singers and the actors exhibited significant spectral and/or frequency/duration differences from one recording environment to another, with the most dramatic differences exhibited by the singers. It was concluded that the environment in which we record experimental samples from professional voice users, especially singers, should be considered as a variable that can affect results.  相似文献

In this experimental work we carefully investigate the rheological behaviour and in particular the shear thickening exhibited by aqueous micellar solutions of CTAB with NaSal as added counterion. We are particularly interested in the evolution of the critical shear rate (at which shear thickening occurs) versus C D , the surfactant concentration. We show that , at fixed salt concentration C S , increases with C D following a power law evolution with a positive exponent of + 5.8. On the other hand we show that if the ratio C D / C S is fixed, decreases with C D with a negative exponent of -2.0. Nevertheless investigations of the zero shear viscosity indicate that in all situations (implying variation of the surfactant concentration C D , or the salt concentration C S or the temperature) is a decreasing function of the length of the micelles. All these evolutions are compatible with a gelation mechanism which could possibly be associated with entanglement effects of large interacting flowing structures. We present the structural study of a biforked compound exhibiting a Colr-Colh phase transition. This study was performed by means of DSC, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, dilatometry and molecular modelling. The molecular packing within the two columnar mesophases of this compound is discussed. For the first time, it is shown that the clusters of adjacent molecules which form the elementary section of a column are tilted with respect to the columnar axis in the rectangular mesophase. From the whole set of experimental data, the number of molecules in a columnar section is found to be about 5 in the rectangular mesophase, and 4 in the hexagonal one. The transition between the two columnar mesophases is discussed with respect to its slow kinetics.
