以裂尖弹性应力场的多参数模型为基础,研究I型、II型以及I/II混合型裂纹参数对光弹性条纹的影响. T应力的存在和符号影响着等色线条纹环的半径大小和旋转方向,对于纯I型或II型裂纹而言,条纹环的旋转角度只与T应力有关;而对于I/II混合型裂纹,条纹环旋转角度与K_{\rm I}, K_{\rm II}和T应力有关. T应力的存在使得I型裂纹在裂尖±π/3方向上出现2个各向同性点(T应力为正时),使得II型裂纹在裂尖后的裂纹面上出现1个各向同性点. 对于I/II混合型裂纹而言,当T应力为正时等倾线出现距裂尖半径不等的3个各向同性点;反之, T应力为负时在裂尖后只存在1个各向同性点,这些各向同性点分别与I型和II型裂纹情况具有相同的规律.   相似文献

In the present study, an I-integral method is established for solving the crack-tip intensity factors of ferroelectric single-crystals. The I-integral combined with the phase field model is successfully used to investigate crack-tip intensity factor variations due to domain switching in ferroelectricity subjected to electromechanical loadings, which exhibits several advantages over previous methods based on small-scale switching. First, the shape of the switching zone around a crack tip is predicted by the time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau equation, which does not require preset energy-based switching criterion. Second, the I-integral can directly solve the crack-tip intensity factors and decouple the crack-tip intensity factors of different modes based on superimposing an auxiliary state onto an actual state. Third, the I-integral is area-independent, namely, the I-integral is not affected by the integral area size, the polarization distributions, or domain walls. This makes the I-integral applicable to large-scale domain switching. To this end, the electro-elastic field intensity factors of an impermeable crack in PbTiO3 ferroelectric single crystals are evaluated under electrical, mechanical, and combined loading. The intensity factors obtained by the I-integral agree well with those obtained by the extrapolation technique. From numerical results, the following conclusions can be drawn with respect to fracture behavior of ferroelectrics under large-scale switching. Under displacement controlled mechanical loading, the stress intensity factors (SIFs) decrease monotonically due to the domain switching process, which means a crack tip shielding or effective switching-induced toughening occurs. If an external electric field is applied, the electric displacement intensity factor (EDIF) increases in all cases, i.e., the formed domain patterns enhance the electric crack tip loading. The energy release rate, expressed by the crack-tip J-integral, is reduced by the domain switching in all examples, which underlines the switching-induced-toughening effect. In contrast, under stress controlled load, the SIF evolves due to large-scale switching to a stable value, which is higher than the non-switching initial value, i.e., fracture is promoted in this case.  相似文献

In experimental R-curve investigations crack development usually starts from notches. The validity of R-curves depends on the size of the notch root radius. This influence is completely ignored in most cases. In this theoretical study it is shown how the notch radius affects the formally computed crack resistance curve. First, the influence of the notch radius on the starting point of the R-curve, the so-called crack-tip toughness K I0, will be addressed. Then, the effect of the notch on the shielding stress intensity factor will be discussed, and, finally, the influence on T-stress and the consequences on local path stability will be shown.  相似文献

Analyses of the stress and strain fields around smoothly-blunting crack tips in both non-hardening and hardening elastic-plastic materials, under contained plane-strain yielding and subject to mode I opening loads, have been carried out by use of a finite element method suitably formulated to admit large geometry changes. The results include the crack-tip shape and near-tip deformation field, and the crack-tip opening displacement has been related to a parameter of the applied load, the J-integral. The hydrostatic stresses near the crack tip are limited due to the lack of constraint on the blunted tip, limiting achievable stress levels except in a very small region around the crack tip in power-law hardening materials. The J-integral is found to be path-independent except very close to the crack tip in the region affected by the blunted tip. Models for fracture are discussed in the light of these results including one based on the growth of voids. The rate of void-growth near the tip in hardening materials seems to be little different from the rate in non-hardening ones when measured in terms of crack-tip opening displacement, which leads to a prediction of higher toughness in hardening materials. It is suggested that improvement of this model would follow from better understanding of void-void and void-crack coalescence and void nucleation, and some criteria and models for these effects are discussed. The implications of the finite element results for fracture criteria based on critical stress or strain, or both, is discussed with respect to transition of fracture mode and the angle of initial crack-growth. Localization of flow is discussed as a possible fracture model and as a model for void-crack coalescence.  相似文献

Experimental simulations of dynamic crack growth past inclusions of two different elastic moduli, stiff (glass) and compliant (polyurethane) relative to the matrix (epoxy), are carried out in a 2D setting. Full-field surface deformations are mapped in the crack–inclusion vicinity optically. The crack growth behavior as a function of inclusion–matrix interfacial strength and the inclusion location relative to the crack is studied under stress-wave loading conditions. An ultra high-speed rotating mirror-type digital camera is used to record random speckle patterns in the crack–inclusion vicinity to quantify in-plane displacement fields. The crack-tip deformation histories from the time of impact until complete fracture are mapped and fracture parameters are extracted. The crack front is arrested by the symmetrically located compliant inclusion for about half the duration needed for complete fracture event. The dynamically propagating crack is attracted and trapped by the weakly bonded inclusion interface for both stiff and compliant symmetrically located inclusion cases, whereas it is deflected away by the strongly bonded stiff inclusion and attracted by strongly bonded compliant inclusion when located eccentrically. The crack is arrested by a strongly bonded compliant inclusion for a significant fraction of the total dynamic event and is longer than the one for the weakly bonded counterpart. The compliant inclusion cases show higher fracture toughness than the stiff inclusion cases. Measured crack-tip mode-mixities correlate well with the observed crack attraction and repulsion mechanisms. Macroscopic examination of fracture surfaces reveals much higher surface roughness and ruggedness after crack–inclusion interaction for compliant inclusion than the stiff one. Implications of these observations on the dynamic fracture behavior of micron size A-glass and polyamide (PA6) particle filled epoxy is demonstrated. Filled-epoxy with 3% Vf of PA6 filler is shown to produce the same dynamic fracture toughness enhancement as the one due to 10% Vf glass.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to propose a novel methodology for determining dynamic fracture toughness (DFT) of materials under mixed mode I/II impact loading. Previous experimental investigations on mixed mode fracture have been largely limited to qusi-static conditions, due to difficulties in the generation of mixed mode dynamic loading and the precise control of mode mixity at crack tip, in absence of sophisticated experimental techniques. In this study, a hybrid experimental–numerical approach is employed to measure mixed mode DFT of 40Cr high strength steel, with the aid of the split Hopkinson tension bar (SHTB) apparatus and finite element analysis (FEA). A fixture device and a series of tensile specimens with an inclined center crack are designed for the tests to generate the components of mode I and mode II dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIF). Through the change of the crack inclination angle β (=90°, 60°, 45°, and 30°), the KII/KI ratio is successfully controlled in the range from 0 to 1.14. A mixed mode I/II dynamic fracture plane, which can also exhibit the information of crack inclination angle and loading rate at the same time, is obtained based on the experimental results. A safety zone is determined in this plane according to the characteristic line. Through observation of the fracture surfaces, different fracture mechanisms are found for pure mode I and mixed mode fractures.  相似文献

The macroscopic pre-cracked line scratch test (MPLST), in which a debonded edge of a film is loaded in in-plane compression, has been modeled as a generic, coupled fracture–buckle problem using simple beam theory. Near crack-tip beam rotation (also called root rotation in literature), which always exists due to the eccentric loading in this type of test, has been incorporated into the governing equations. An analytical solution to the augmented problem has been derived. It is found that the near-tip rotation can introduce pre-buckle bending in the film. One important consequence of this pre-buckle bending is that it leads to the reduction of the critical buckling condition. This agrees well with the results of [Int. J. Fract. 113 (2002) 39] obtained by solving the full elastic field near the crack-tip. Furthermore, the pre-buckle bending moment at crack-tip remains negative (leading to crack closure) as long as the pre-buckle crack length is small, but it becomes positive (leading to crack opening) at larger pre-buckle crack length. The negative bending moment causes the crack-tip energy release rate to decrease as the crack propagates, which results in a stable pre-buckle crack growth. Once it becomes positive, however, the bending moment causes crack-tip energy release rate to increase rapidly as crack length increases and hence leads to an unstable (pre-buckle) crack growth. Further, the nominal phase angle is initially larger than the classic prediction of 52.1° owing to the existence of the negative crack-tip bending moment, but it drops quickly upon approaching the buckle point. All these results are confirmed by a rigorous 2D FEM calculation using cohesive zone modeling (CZM) approach. Finally the derived analytical solution has been used to analyze a set of PLST data reported in the literature. It has been demonstrated that plasticity in the adhesive layer and in the bonded film is responsible for the strong R-curve toughening characteristics in the deduced interface toughness data. It has also been shown that, once the deduced interface toughness is incorporated into a CZM simulation, both the axial loading and buckling point can be accurately predicted.  相似文献

The stress intensity factor of a half-plane crack extending non-uniformly in an isotropic elastic solid subjected to stress wave loading is determined. A plane stress pulse strikes the crack at time t = 0, the wavefront being parallel to the plane of the crack. At some arbitrary later time t = τ, the crack begins to extend at a non-uniform rate. It is found that the stress intensity factor is a universal function of instantaneous crack-tip velocity times the stress intensity factor for an equivalent stationary crack. An energy rate balance fracture criterion is applied to obtain an equation of motion for the crack tip. The delay time between the arrival of the incident pulse and the onset of fracture is also calculated for this fracture criterion.  相似文献

The feasibility of using acoustic-emission techniques for the characterization of fracture resistance in AISI 4340 and SA533B steels is examined. The critical value of J-integral (J IC ) is measured with a single small specimen (compact tension) loaded in the elastic-plastic range at room temperature. Initiation is detected during loading by acoustic emission. A new AE procedure for crack-growth monitoring in fracture-toughness specimens has been proposed. The possibility of discriminating AE signals from noncritical sources, such as void nucleation during crack-tip plastic deformation and signals from a growing crack, is discussed.  相似文献

The simple asymptotic problem of an impermeable crack in an electrostrictive ceramic under electric loading is analyzed. Closed form solutions of elastic fields are obtained by using the complex function theory. It is found that the KI-dominant region is very small compared to the electric saturation zone. A fracture parameter for an electrostrictive material subjected to electric loading is discussed. In order to investigate the influence of the transverse electric displacement on fracture behavior under the small-scale conditions, we also consider the modified boundary layer problem of a crack in an electrostrictive material. Analytic solutions of electric displacement fields for the asymptotic problem are obtained based on the nonlinear dielectric theory from a modified boundary layer analysis. The shape of the electric displacement saturation zone is shown to depend on the transverse electric displacement. Stress intensity factors induced by the electrostrictive strains are evaluated using the nonlinear solution of the electric displacements. It is found that the transverse electric displacement affects strongly the variation of the mode mixity.  相似文献

A three-point bend fixture has been designed, fabricated, and utilized to demonstrate the feasibility of performing in-situ J-testing at ambient and elevated temperatures inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Using the three-point bend test technique, in-situ SEM J-testing has been performed to measure the crack mouth opening displacement and crack extension as a function of the applied load in order to generate J-R curves for Zircaloy-4 at 25°C and 316°C. Once the J-R curve is determined, an equivalent KJ-resistance (KJ-R) curve is computed on the basis of a relationship between the J-integral (J) and the stress intensity factor (K). The J-R and KJ-R curves of Zircaloy-4 exhibit a rising R-curve behavior, while the elastic K-R curve underestimates the fracture resistance of Zircaloy-4 once substantial crack extension has occurred. For the specimen dimensions considered, the J-R curves generated by in-situ SEM J-tests are not sensitive to the specimen geometry and measure the actual fracture resistance of the material. Furthermore, the onset of crack extension is dictated by the emission of one or more slipbands from the crack tip, and a change in the crack-tip displacement field, followed by void formation along the slipband, and linkage of the voids with the main crack.  相似文献

An asymptotic analysis of the near-tip fields is given for transient crack propagation in an elastic-plastic material. The material is characterized by J2 flow theory together with a bilinear effective stress-strain curve. Both plane stress and plane strain conditions have been considered. Explicit results are given for the order of the crack-tip singularity, the angular position at which unloading occurs, and the angular variation of the near-tip stresses, all as functions of the crack-tip speed and the ratio of the slopes of the two portions of the bilinear stress-strain relation. It was found that the results are much more sensitive to the elastic-plastic constitutive relation than to the crack speed. This result is important for numerical analyses of dynamic crack propagation problems.  相似文献

For crack growth along an interface between two adjacent elastic–plastic materials in a layered solid, the resistance curve behaviour is analysed by approximating the behaviour in terms of a bi-material interface under small scale yielding conditions. Thus, it is assumed that the layers are thick enough so that the extent of the plastic regions around the crack tip are much smaller than the thickness of the nearest layers. The focus is on the effect of initial residual stresses in the layered material, or on T-stress components induced during loading. The fracture process is represented in terms of a cohesive zone model. It is found that the value of the T-stress component in the softer material adjacent to the interface crack plays a dominant role, such that a negative value of this T-stress gives a significant increase of the interface fracture toughness, while a positive value gives a reduction of the fracture toughness.  相似文献

A solution for Model-I plane strain crack tip fields in a bi-linear elastic–plastic material is presented. The elastic–plastic Poisson's ratio is introduced to characterize the influence of elastic deformation on the near tip constraint. Attention is focused on the distribution of elastic/plastic strain energy in the sensitive region of the forward sector ahead of a crack tip. The present study shows that the elastic strain energy can be higher than the plastic strain energy in this sensitive sector while large amount of the plastic strain energy develops outside this sector around the crack tip. The effect of elastic deformation in this sensitive region on the structure of crack-tip fields is considerable and the assumption in some important solutions for crack-tip fields reported in literature that the elastic deformation is small and can be ignored is therefore not physically reasonable. Besides, finite element analysis is carried out to validate the analytical solution and good agreement between them is found. It is seen that the present solution with T-stress can properly describe the crack-tip fields under various constraints for different specimens and an analytical relation is established between the critical value of J-integral, Jc, and T-stress for elastic–plastic fracture.  相似文献

One of the basic mechanisms for fatigue crack growth in ductile metals is that depending on crack-tip blunting under tensile loads and re-sharpening of the crack-tip during unloading. In a standard numerical analysis accounting for finite strains it is not possible to follow this process during many cycles, as severe mesh distortion at the crack-tip results from the huge geometry changes developing during the cyclic plastic straining. In the present numerical studies, based on an elastic-perfectly plastic material model, crack growth computations are continued up to 200 full cycles by using remeshing at several stages of the plastic deformation. Three different values of the load ratio R=Kmin/Kmax are considered. It is shown that the crack-tip opening displacement, CTOD, typically undergoes a transient behaviour, with no crack closure during many cycles, before a steady-state cycling with crack closure at the tip starts to gradually develop.  相似文献

An asymptotic crack-tip analysis of stress and strain fields is carried out for an antiplane shear crack (Mode III) based on a corner theory of plasticity. Because of the nonproportional loading history experienced by a material element near the crack tip in stable crack growth, classical flow theory may predict an overly stiff response of the elastic plastic solid, as is the case in plastic buckling problems. The corner theory used here accounts for this anomalous behavior. The results are compared with those of a similar analysis based on the J2 flow theory of plasticity.  相似文献

For crack growth along an interface between dissimilar materials the effect of combined modes I, II and III at the crack-tip is investigated. First, in order to highlight situations where crack growth is affected by a mode III contribution, examples of material configurations are discussed where mode III has an effect. Subsequently, the focus is on crack growth along an interface between an elastic-plastic solid and an elastic substrate. The analyses are carried out for conditions of small-scale yielding, with the fracture process at the interface represented by a cohesive zone model. Due to the mismatch of elastic properties across the interface the corresponding elastic solution has an oscillating stress singularity, and this solution is applied as boundary conditions on the outer edge of the region analyzed. For several combinations of modes I, II and III crack growth resistance curves are calculated numerically in order to determine the steady-state fracture toughness. For given values of KI and KII the minimum fracture toughness corresponds to KIII=0 in most of the range analyzed, but there is a range where the minimum occurs for a nonzero value of KIII.  相似文献

A new approach for the analysis of crack propagation in brittle materials is proposed, which is based on a combination of fracture mechanics and continuum damage mechanics within the context of the finite element method. The approach combines the accuracy of singular crack-tip elements from fracture mechanics theories with the flexibility of crack representation by softening zones in damage mechanics formulations. A super element is constructed in which the typical elements are joined together. The crack propagation is decided on either of two fracture criteria; one criterion is based on the energy release rate or the J-integral, the other on the largest principal stress in the crack-tip region. Contrary to many damage mechanics methods, the combined fracture⧹damage approach is not sensitive to variations in the finite element division. Applications to situations of mixed-mode crack propagation in both two- and three-dimensional problems reveal that the calculated crack paths are independent of the element size and the element orientation and are accurate within one element from the theoretical (curvilinear) crack paths.  相似文献
