An amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PEO–PDMS) diblock copolymer was used to template a bisphenol A type epoxy resin (ER); nanostructured thermoset blends of ER and PEO–PDMS were prepared with 4,4′‐methylenedianiline (MDA) as the curing agent. The phase behavior, crystallization, hydrogen‐bonding interactions, and nanoscale structures were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The uncured ER was miscible with the poly(ethylene oxide) block of PEO–PDMS, and the uncured blends were not macroscopically phase‐separated. Macroscopic phase separation took place in the MDA‐cured ER/PEO–PDMS blends containing 60–80 wt % PEO–PDMS diblock copolymer. However, the composition‐dependent nanostructures were formed in the cured blends with 10–50 wt % PEO–PDMS, which did not show macroscopic phase separation. The poly(dimethylsiloxane) microdomains with sizes of 10–20 nm were dispersed in a continuous ER‐rich phase; the average distance between the neighboring microdomains was in the range of 20–50 nm. The miscibility between the cured ER and the poly(ethylene oxide) block of PEO–PDMS was ascribed to the favorable hydrogen‐bonding interaction. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The ultrasonic degradation of hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) in aqueous solution, and the copolymerization of HEC with PEO were studied. The structure of the copolymer was identified by DTA, IR, MS, x-ray diffraction, and polarizing microscopy. The copolymer prepared is mainly block. The copolymer formed amounts to 55.07% by irradiating 0.5% HEC/PEO aqueous solution for a period of 10 min at 25°C and 18.2 kHz with 2.5 A input current on a reversed main circuit.  相似文献

The reversible micellization and sol–gel transition of block copolymer solutions in an ionic liquid (IL) triggered by a photostimulus is described. The ABA triblock copolymer employed, denoted P(AzoMA‐r‐NIPAm)‐b‐PEO‐b‐P(AzoMA‐r‐NIPAm)), has a B block composed of an IL‐soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The A block consists of a random copolymer including thermosensitive N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) units and a methacrylate with an azobenzene chromophore in the side chain (AzoMA). A phototriggered reversible unimer‐to‐micelle transition of a dilute ABA triblock copolymer (1 wt %) was observed in an IL, 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4mim]PF6), at an intermediate “bistable” temperature (50 °C). The system underwent a reversible sol–gel transition cycle at the bistable temperature (53 °C), with reversible association/fragmentation of the polymer network resulting from the phototriggered self‐assembly of the ABA triblock copolymer (20 wt %) in [C4mim]PF6.  相似文献

The anionic polymerization of 2‐vinylnaphthalene (2VN) has been studied in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at ?78 °C and in toluene at 40 °C. 2VN polymerization in THF, toluene, or toluene/THF (99:1 v/v) initiated by sec‐butyllithium (sBuLi) indicates living characteristics, affording polymers with predefined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Block copolymers of 2VN with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) have been synthesized successfully by sequential monomer addition in THF at ?78 °C initiated by an adduct of sBuLi–LiCl. The crossover propagation from poly(2‐vinylnaphthyllithium) (P2VN) macroanions to MMA and tBA appears to be living, the molecular weight and composition can be predicted, and the molecular weight distribution of the resulting block copolymer is narrow (weight‐average molecular/number‐average molecular weight < 1.3). Block copolymers with different chain lengths for the P2VN segment can easily be prepared by variations in the monomer ratios. The block copolymerization of 2VN with hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane also results in a block copolymer of P2VN and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) contaminated with a significant amount of homo‐PDMS. Poly(2VN‐b‐nBA) (where nBA is n‐butyl acrylate) has also been prepared by the transesterification reaction of the poly(2VN‐b‐tBA) block copolymer. Size exclusion chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR measurements indicate that the resulting polymers have the required architecture. The corresponding amphiphilic block copolymer of poly(2VN‐b‐AA) (where AA is acrylic acid) has been synthesized by acidic hydrolysis of the ester group of tert‐butyl from the poly(2VN‐b‐tBA) copolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have been able to prepare a molecular complex between the poly(ethylene oxide) block of a poly(ethylene)-b-poly(ethylene-alt-propylene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer and p-nitrophenol (PNP). The composition of the copolymer employed was: 24% PE, 57% PEP and 19% PEO in weight percent. The pure copolymer exhibited a non-conventional thermal behavior since the PEO block displayed a fractionated crystallization process during cooling. The PEO block/PNP complex did not show any apparent crystallization during cooling, instead cold crystallization during heating was observed and an approximately 30°C increase in melting point as compared to the neat PEO block within the copolymer. This caused an overlap in the melting regions of the PE block and the PEO block/PNP complex. The self-nucleation of the PE-b-PEP-b-PEO/PNP complex is very different from that of the neat triblock copolymer. An increased capacity for self-nucleation of the PEO block was produced by the complexation with PNP and therefore the three self-nucleation domains were clearly encountered for both the PE block and for the PEO block/PNP complex. Self-nucleation was able to show that the two crystallizable blocks can be self-nucleated and annealed in an independent way, thereby ascertaining the presence of separate crystalline regions in the triblock copolymer. Through the use of PNP, both the crystallinity and the melting point of the PE-b-PEP-b-PEO block copolymer employed here can be substantially increased. Similar results were obtained by complexation of the same ABC triblock copolymer with resorcinol.  相似文献

(MMA–α-methylstyrene)block copolymer was reacted with poly(α-methylstyryl)anion at ?78°C in a mixture of good tetrahydrofuran (THF) and poor methylcyclohexane solvents. The reaction conditions were chosen so as to produce graft copolymers made up of a backbone (AB-type block copolymer) and a single branched chain (1:2 graft copolymer). Gel permeation chromatograph (GPC), osmotic pressure measurement, and elemental analysis were used for the characterization of 1:2 graft copolymer. It appeared that poly(α-methylstyryl)anion reacted with the end pendant groups located farthest away from the branched point of AB-type block copolymer, when the dimensions of AB-type block copolymer molecule are small.  相似文献

Biodegradable, amphiphilic, four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL‐b‐PEO) copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of four‐armed poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) with terminal OH groups with diethylzinc (ZnEt2) as a catalyst. The chemical structure of PCL‐b‐PEO copolymer was confirmed by 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The hydroxyl end groups of the four‐armed PCL were successfully substituted by PEO blocks in the copolymer. The monomodal profile of molecular weight distribution by gel permeation chromatography provided further evidence for the four‐armed architecture of the copolymer. Physicochemical properties of the four‐armed block copolymers differed from their starting four‐armed PCL precursor. The melting points were between those of PCL precursor and linear poly(ethylene glycol). The length of the outer PEO blocks exhibited an obvious effect on the crystallizability of the block copolymer. The degree of swelling of the four‐armed block copolymer increased with PEO length and PEO content. The micelle formation of the four‐armed block copolymer was examined by a fluorescent probe technique, and the existence of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) confirmed the amphiphilic nature of the resulting copolymer. The cmc value increased with increasing PEO length. The absolute cmc values were higher than those for linear amphiphilic block copolymers. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Biocompatible and biodegradable ABC and ABCBA triblock and pentablock copolymers composed of poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL), poly(L ‐lactide) (PLA), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEO) with controlled molecular weights and low polydispersities were synthesized by a click conjugation between alkyne‐terminated PCL‐b‐PLA and azide‐terminated PEO. Their molecular structures, physicochemical and self‐assembly properties were thoroughly characterized by means of FT‐IR, 1H‐NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. These copolymers formed microphase‐separated crystalline materials in solid state, where the crystallization of PCL block was greatly restricted by both PEO and PLA blocks. These copolymers self‐assembled into starlike and flowerlike micelles with a spherical morphology, and the micelles were stable over 27 days in aqueous solution at 37 °C. The doxorubicin (DOX) drug‐loaded nanoparticles showed a bigger size with a similar spherical morphology compared to blank nanoparticles, demonstrating a biphasic drug‐release profile in buffer solution and at 37 °C. Moreover, the DOX‐loaded nanoparticles fabricated from the pentablock copolymer sustained a longer drug‐release period (25 days) at pH 7.4 than those of the triblock copolymer. The blank nanoparticles showed good cell viability, whereas the DOX‐loaded nanoparticles killed fewer cells than free DOX, suggesting a controlled drug‐release effect. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work explores coatings with thermally switchable wetting behavior, based on block copolymers that possess both hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments. The amphiphilic block copolymers were synthesized by coupling allyl-ended poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and hydride-ended poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) oligomers via a Pt catalyst. One near-symmetric diblock possessed an order-disorder transition temperature (TODT) of 64 °C. When cooled through TODT in ambient air, the PDMS domains wet the film's surface, producing a hydrophobic coating with a water contact angle (CA) = 90°. However, when cooled in humidified air, hydrophilic PEO domains form at the surface, yielding CA = 30–40°. The coatings can be reversibly switched between the two states by reheating above TODT, in the appropriate environment, and then cooling, rapidly generating the desired room-temperature surface wettability. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Molecular motions of hydrophobic–hydrophilic water-soluble block copolymers in solution were investigated by high-resolution proton magnetic resonance (NMR). Samples studied include block copolymers of polystyrene–poly(ethylene oxide), polybutadiene–poly(ethylene oxide), and poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide). NMR measurements were carried out varying molecular weight, temperature, and solvent composition. For AB copolymers of polystyrene and poly(ethylene oxide), two peaks caused by the phenyl protons of low-molecular-weight (M?n = 3,300) copolymer were clearly resolved in D2O at 100°C, but the phenyl proton peaks of high-molecular-weight (M?n = 13,500 and 36,000) copolymers were too broad to observe in the same solvent, even at 100°C. It is concluded that polystyrene blocks are more mobile in low-molecular-weight copolymer in water than in high-molecular-weight copolymer in the same solvent because the molecular weight of the polystyrene block of the low-molecular-weight copolymer is itself small. In the mixed solvent D2O and deuterated tetrahydrofuran (THF-d8), two peaks caused by the phenyl protons of the high-molecular-weight (M?n = 36,000) copolymer were clearly resolved at 67°C. It is thought that the molecular motions of the polystyrene blocks are activated by the interaction between these blocks and THF in the mixed solvent.  相似文献

Well defined amphiphilic block copolymers containing a polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) and a poly(ethylene oxide) block (PEO) were synthesized by ring opening polymerization of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane, followed by chain extension with a PEO block of a defined length. These amphiphilic molecules were used as templates in a solvent-evaporation driven synthesis approach to self-assembled mesostructured silica films. Thin films and powders were prepared, and the resulting material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and 29Si and 13C solid state NMR. The behavior of the PEO-b-PDMS block copolymer during heat treatment up to 600°C was followed in detail by solid state NMR.  相似文献

Hydrogen bonding interactions, phase behavior, crystallization, and surface hydrophobicity in nanostructured blend of bisphenol A‐type epoxy resin (ER), for example, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(dimethyl siloxane)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL–PDMS–PCL) triblock copolymer were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and contact angle measurements. The PCL–PDMS–PCL triblock copolymer consisted of two epoxy‐miscible PCL blocks and an epoxy‐immiscible PDMS block. The cured ER/PCL–PDMS–PCL blends showed composition‐dependent nanostructures from spherical and worm‐like microdomains to lamellar morphology. FTIR study revealed the existence of hydrogen bonding interactions between the PCL blocks and the cured epoxy, which was responsible for their miscibility. The overall crystallization rate of the PCL blocks in the blend decreased remarkably with increasing ER content, whereas the melting point was slightly depressed in the blends. The surface hydrophobicity of the cured ER increased upon addition of the block copolymer, whereas the surface free energy (γs) values decreased with increasing block copolymer concentration. The hydrophilicity of the epoxy could be reduced through blending with the PCL–PDMS–PCL block copolymer that contained a hydrophobic PDMS block. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n‐butyl methacrylate (n‐BMA) was initiated by a poly(ethylene oxide) chloro telechelic macroinitiator synthesized by esterification of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with 2‐chloro propionyl chloride. The polymerization, carried out in bulk at 90 °C and catalyzed by iron(II) chloride tetrahydrate in the presence of triphenylphosphine ligand (FeCl2 · 4H2O/PPh3), led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock copolymers with MMA or n‐BMA as the A block and PEO as the B block. A kinetic study showed that the polymerization was first‐order with respect to the monomer concentration. Moreover, the experimental molecular weights of the block copolymers increased linearly with the monomer conversion, and the molecular weight distribution was acceptably narrow at the end of the reaction. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through the adjustment of the content of PEO blocks (PEO content >90% by mass). When the PEO content was small [monomer/macroinitiator molar ratio (M/I) = 300], the block copolymers were water‐insoluble and showed only one glass‐transition temperature. With an increase in the concentration of PEO (M/I = 100 or 50) in the copolymer, two glass transitions were detected, indicating phase separation. The macroinitiator and the corresponding triblock copolymers were characterized with Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, size exclusion chromatography analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABA‐type triblock copolymers and AB‐type star diblock copolymers with poly(2‐adamantyl vinyl ether) [poly(2‐AdVE)] hard outer segments and poly(n‐butyl vinyl ether) [poly(NBVE)] soft inner segments were synthesized by sequential living cationic copolymerization. Although both the two polymer segments were composed solely of poly(vinyl ether) backbones and hydrocarbon side chains, they were segregated into microphase‐separated structure, so that the block copolymers formed thermoplastic elastomers. Both the ABA‐type triblock copolymers and the AB‐type star diblock copolymers exhibited rubber elasticity over wide temperature range. For example, the ABA‐type triblock copolymers showed rubber elasticity from about ?53 °C to about 165 °C and the AB‐type star diblock copolymer did from about ?47 °C to 183 °C with a similar composition of poly(2‐AdVE) and poly(NBVE) segments in the dynamic mechanical analysis. The AB‐type star diblock copolymers exhibited higher tensile strength and elongation at break than the ABA‐type triblock copolymers. The thermal decomposition temperatures of both the block copolymers were as high as 321–331 °C, indicating their high thermal stability. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Azide telechelics of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), polypropylene oxide (PPO), and polyethylene oxide (PEO) were synthesized from the corresponding epoxy telechelics and characterized. These oligomeric azides were chain extended by reaction with bispropargyl ether of bisphenol A (BPEBA) through a copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. PDMS manifested a faster reaction in contrast to PPO or PEO. The chain‐extended polymers underwent cross‐linking above 170°C through thermal cleavage of residual (terminal) azide groups. This was manifested in their rheograms and was further substantiated by FTIR and NMR spectroscopic analyses. Dynamic mechanical analyses of the cross‐linked polymers exhibited characteristic transitions of hard and soft segments, implying microphase separation in the system. Microscopic evaluation of the thermally cross‐linked sample revealed a porous morphology with microsized to nanosized pores.  相似文献

Chain‐growth condensation polymerization of p‐aminobenzoic acid esters 1 bearing a tri(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether side chain on the nitrogen atom was investigated by using lithium 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) as a base. The methyl ester monomer 1a afforded polymer with low molecular weight and a broad molecular weight distribution, whereas the polymerization of the phenyl ester monomer 1b at ?20 °C yielded polymer with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 2800–13,400) and low polydispersity (Mw/Mn = 1.10–1.15). Block copolymerization of 1b and 4‐(octylamino)benzoic acid methyl ester ( 2 ) was further investigated. We found that block copolymer of poly 1b and poly 2 with defined molecular weight and low polydispersity was obtained when the polymerization of 1b was initiated with equimolar LiHMDS at ?20 °C and continued at ?50 °C, followed by addition of 2 and equimolar LiHMDS at ?10 °C. Spherical aggregates were formed when a solution of poly 1b in THF was dropped on a glass plate and dried at room temperature, although the block copolymer of poly 1b and poly 2 did not afford similar aggregates under the same conditions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We present a systematic investigation of the crystallization and aggregation behavior of a poly(1,2-butadiene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer (PB-b-PEO) in n-heptane. n-Heptane is a poor solvent for PEO and at 70°C the block copolymer self-assembles into spherical micelles composed of a liquid PEO core and a soluble PB corona. Time- and temperature-dependent light scattering experiments revealed that when crystallization of the PEO cores is induced by cooling, the crystal morphology depends on the crystallization temperature (T c ): Below 30°C, the high nucleation rate of the PEO core dictates the growth of the crystals by a fast aggregation of the micelles into meander-like (branched) structures due to a depletion of the micelles at the growth front. Above 30°C the nucleation rate is diminished and a relatively small crystal growth rate leads to the formation of twisted lamellae as imaged by scanning force microscopy. All data demonstrate that the formation mechanism of the crystals through micellar aggregation is dictated by two competitive effects, namely, by the nucleation and growth of the PEO core.  相似文献

Block copolymers with increased Flory–Huggins interaction parameters (χ) play an essential role in the production of sub‐10 nm nanopatterns in the growing field of directed self‐assembly for next generation lithographic applications. A library of PDMS‐b‐PEO block copolymers were synthesized by click chemistry and their interaction parameters (χ) determined. The highest χ measured in our samples was 0.21 at 150 °C, which resulted in phase‐separated domains with periods as small as 7.9 nm, suggesting that PDMS‐b‐PEO is a prime candidate for sub‐10 nm nanopatterning. To suppress PEO crystallization, PDMS‐b‐PEO was blended with (l )‐tartaric acid (LTA) which allows for tuning of the self‐assembled morphologies. Additionally, it was observed that the order‐disorder transition temperature (TODT) of PDMS‐b‐PEO increased dramatically as the amount of LTA in the blend increased, allowing for further control over self‐assembly. To understand the mechanism of this phenomenon, we present a novel field‐based supramolecular model, which describes the formation of copolymer‐additive complexes by reversible hydrogen bonding. The mean‐field phase separation behavior of the model was calculated using the random phase approximation (RPA). The RPA analysis reproduces behavior consistent with an increase of the effective χ in the PDMS‐b‐(PEO/LTA suprablock). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A unique diblock copolymer ring and its linear triblock copolymer precursor composed of polystyrene and polydimethylsiloxane have been characterized by static and dynamic light scattering in dilute solution. The measurements were carried out with cyclohexane as the solvent over a temperature range of 12–35°C. Cyclohexane has the useful property that it is nearly isorefractive with the PDMS so that the PDMS block segments are invisible to the light-scattering technique and it is a theta solvent for polystyrene at 34.5°C. The block polymers in this work contain 35.1 wt % of styrene as determined by proton NMR. In the linear triblock polymer, the polystyrene is the center block with PDMS blocks on each side. Static light scattering measurements give 4.31 × 104 for the average molecular weight of the whole polymer. Light scattering also shows that the apparent theta temperature for the linear triblock is shifted by 15°C to a value of 20°C at which point the second virial coefficient drops sharply and phase separation begins to induce aggregation. The diblock ring, however, shows a strongly positive second virial coefficient and no aggregation even at 12°C which is the limit of these experiments. The diffusion coefficients of cyclic diblock (Dc) and linear triblock copolymer (D1) are measured by dynamic light scattering. The ratio of diffusion coefficients of cyclic and linear copolymers at 14.9°C and 30°C are Dc/Dl = 1.13 and 1.107 respectively. These compare well with prediction of 1.18 for this ratio from consideration of the hydrodynamics of matched linear and cyclic polymer chains. Dynamic light scattering quantitatively confirms that the linear copolymer experiences a solvent quality change near 20°C but the cyclic polymer remains in good solvent over the entire experimental temperature range. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Well‐defined ABA triblock copolymers in which A stands for poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and B for poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PTHF) were synthesized by end‐capping bifunctionally living PTHF with different polyethylene glycol–monomethylethers. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis of these copolymers showed two melting points: one around 55 °C due to the PEO blocks, and one around 30 °C due to the PTHF segments, demonstrating that these block copolymers show extensive phase separation. Upon addition of sodium thiocyanate, crystalline complexes with PEO were formed and as a consequence, the melting points of the PEO segments had shifted to approximately 170 °C, whereas the melting points of the PTHF segments decreased slightly. The obtained materials behave as thermoplastic elastomers up to 160–175 °C. The influence of the relative lengths of the PEO and the PTHF segments on the thermal and mechanical properties of the materials have been investigated.
