A digraph G = (V, E) is primitive if, for some positive integer k, there is a uv walk of length k for every pair u, v of vertices of V. The minimum such k is called the exponent of G, denoted exp(G). The exponent of a vertex uV, denoted exp(u), is the least integer k such that there is a uv walk of length k for each vV. For a set XV, exp(X) is the least integer k such that for each vV there is a Xv walk of length k, i.e., a uv walk of length k for some uX. Let F(G, k) : = max{exp(X) : |X| = k} and F(n, k) : = max{F(G, k) : |V| = n}, where |X| and |V| denote the number of vertices in X and V, respectively. Recently, B. Liu and Q. Li proved F(n, k) = (nk)(n − 1) + 1 for all 1 ≤ kn − 1. In this article, for each k, 1 ≤ kn − 1, we characterize the digraphs G such that F(G, k) = F(n, k), thereby answering a question of R. Brualdi and B. Liu. We also find some new upper bounds on the (ordinary) exponent of G in terms of the maximum outdegree of G, Δ+(G) = max{d+(u) : uV}, and thus obtain a new refinement of the Wielandt bound (n − 1)2 + 1. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. For a graph G, let σ2(G) denote the minimum degree sum of a pair of nonadjacent vertices. We conjecture that if |V(G)| = n = Σki = 1 ai and σ2(G) ≥ n + k − 1, then for any k vertices v1, v2,…, vk in G, there exist vertex‐disjoint paths P1, P2,…, Pk such that |V(Pi)| = ai and vi is an endvertex of Pi for 1 ≤ ik. In this paper, we verify the conjecture for the cases where almost all ai ≤ 5, and the cases where k ≤ 3. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 34: 163–169, 2000  相似文献

A graph G is hamiltonian connected if there exists a hamiltonian path joining any two distinct nodes of G. Two hamiltonian paths and of G from u to v are independent if u = u 1 = v 1, v = u v(G) = v v(G) , and u i ≠ v i for every 1 < iv(G). A set of hamiltonian paths, {P 1, P 2, . . . , P k }, of G from u to v are mutually independent if any two different hamiltonian paths are independent from u to v. A graph is k mutually independent hamiltonian connected if for any two distinct nodes u and v, there are k mutually independent hamiltonian paths from u to v. The mutually independent hamiltonian connectivity of a graph G, IHP(G), is the maximum integer k such that G is k mutually independent hamiltonian connected. Let n and k be any two distinct positive integers with nk ≥ 2. We use S n,k to denote the (n, k)-star graph. In this paper, we prove that IHP(S n,k ) = n–2 except for S 4,2 such that IHP(S 4,2) = 1.   相似文献

Let G be a simple graph with n vertices. For any v ? V(G){v \in V(G)} , let N(v)={u ? V(G): uv ? E(G)}{N(v)=\{u \in V(G): uv \in E(G)\}} , NC(G) = min{|N(u) èN(v)|: u, v ? V(G){NC(G)= \min \{|N(u) \cup N(v)|: u, v \in V(G)} and uv \not ? E(G)}{uv \not \in E(G)\}} , and NC2(G) = min{|N(u) èN(v)|: u, v ? V(G){NC_2(G)= \min\{|N(u) \cup N(v)|: u, v \in V(G)} and u and v has distance 2 in E(G)}. Let l ≥ 1 be an integer. A graph G on nl vertices is [l, n]-pan-connected if for any u, v ? V(G){u, v \in V(G)} , and any integer m with lmn, G has a (u, v)-path of length m. In 1998, Wei and Zhu (Graphs Combinatorics 14:263–274, 1998) proved that for a three-connected graph on n ≥ 7 vertices, if NC(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1, then G is [6, n]-pan-connected. They conjectured that such graphs should be [5, n]-pan-connected. In this paper, we prove that for a three-connected graph on n ≥ 7 vertices, if NC 2(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1, then G is [5, n]-pan-connected. Consequently, the conjecture of Wei and Zhu is proved as NC 2(G) ≥ NC(G). Furthermore, we show that the lower bound is best possible and characterize all 2-connected graphs with NC 2(G) ≥ n − δ(G) + 1 which are not [4, n]-pan-connected.  相似文献

Let C be a longest cycle in the 3‐connected graph G and let H be a component of G ? V(C) such that |V(H)| ≥ 3. We supply estimates of the form |C| ≥ 2d(u) + 2d(v) ? α(4 ≤ α ≤ 8), where u,v are suitably chosen non‐adjacent vertices in G. If G is a block, then a vertex u of G is called critical if G - u is not a block. In this article, relationships between the localization of critical vertices and the localization of vertices of relatively small degrees (especially, of degree two) are studied. A block is called semicritical if a) each edge is incident with at least one critical vertex and b) each vertex of degree two is critical. Let G be a semicritical block with at least six vertices. It is proved that A) there exist distinct vertices u2, v1, u2, and v2 of degree two in G such that u1v1 and u2v2 are edges of G, and u1v2, and u2v2 are edges of the complement of G, and B) the complement of G is a block with no critical vertex of degree two.  相似文献

Let H be an atomic monoid. For k ? \Bbb Nk \in {\Bbb N} let Vk (H){\cal V}_k (H) denote the set of all m ? \Bbb Nm \in {\Bbb N} with the following property: There exist atoms (irreducible elements) u 1, …, u k , v 1, …, v m H with u 1· … · u k = v 1 · … · v m . We show that for a large class of noetherian domains satisfying some natural finiteness conditions, the sets Vk (H){\cal V}_k (H) are almost arithmetical progressions. Suppose that H is a Krull monoid with finite cyclic class group G such that every class contains a prime (this includes the multiplicative monoids of rings of integers of algebraic number fields). We show that, for every k ? \Bbb Nk \in {\Bbb N}, max V2k+1 (H) = k |G|+ 1{\cal V}_{2k+1} (H) = k \vert G\vert + 1 which settles Problem 38 in [4].  相似文献

In 1955 R. Brauer and K. A. Fowler showed that ifG is a group of even order >2, and the order |Z(G)| of the center ofG is odd, then there exists a strongly real) elementx∈G−Z whose centralizer satisfies|C G(x)|>|G|1/3. In Theorem 1 we show that every non-abeliansolvable groupG contains an elementx∈G−Z such that|C G(x)|>[G:G′∩Z]1/2 (and thus|C G(x)|>|G|1/3). We also note that if non-abelianG is either metabelian, nilpotent or (more generally) supersolvable, or anA-group, or any Frobenius group, then|C G(x)|>|G|1/2 for somex∈G−Z. In Theorem 2 we prove that every non-abelian groupG of orderp mqn (p, q primes) contains a proper centralizer of order >|G|1/2. Finally, in Theorem 3 we show that theaverage |C(x)|, x∈G, is ≧c|G| 1/3 for metabelian groups, wherec is constant and the exponent 1/3 is best possible.  相似文献

Abstract

Let G be a graph and let v be a vertex of G. The open neigbourhood N(v) of v is the set of all vertices adjacent with v in G. An open packing of G is a set of vertices whose open neighbourhoods are pairwise disjoint. The lower open packing number of G, denoted ρ° L(G), is the minimum cardinality of a maximal open packing of G while the (upper) open packing number of G, denoted ρ°(G), is the maximum cardinality among all open packings of G. It is known (see [7]) that if G is a connected graph of order n ≥3, then ρ°(G) ≤ 2n/3 and this bound is sharp (even for trees). As a consequence of this result, we know that ρ° L(G) ≤ 2n/3. In this paper, we improve this bound when G is a tree. We show that if G is a tree of order n with radius 3, then ρ° L(G)n/2 + 2 √n-1, and this bound is sharp, while if G is a tree of order n with radius at least 4, then ρ° L(G) is bounded above by 2n/3—O√n).  相似文献

For an integer i, a graph is called an Li-graph if, for each triple of vertices u, v, w with d(u, v) = 2 and w (element of) N(u) (intersection) N(v), d(u) + d(v) ≥ | N(u) (union) N(v) (union) N(w)| —i. Asratian and Khachatrian proved that connected Lo-graphs of order at least 3 are hamiltonian, thus improving Ore's Theorem. All K1,3-free graphs are L1-graphs, whence recognizing hamiltonian L1-graphs is an NP-complete problem. The following results about L1-graphs, unifying known results of Ore-type and known results on K1,3-free graphs, are obtained. Set K = lcub;G|Kp,p+1 (contained within) G (contained within) Kp V Kp+1 for some ρ ≥ } (v denotes join). If G is a 2-connected L1-graph, then G is 1-tough unless G (element of) K. Furthermore, if G is as connected L1-graph of order at least 3 such that |N(u) (intersection) N(v)| ≥ 2 for every pair of vertices u, v with d(u, v) = 2, then G is hamiltonian unless G ϵ K, and every pair of vertices x, y with d(x, y) ≥ 3 is connected by a Hamilton path. This result implies that of Asratian and Khachatrian. Finally, if G is a connected L1-graph of even order, then G has a perfect matching. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Let G be a permutation group on a set Ω with no fixed points in,and m be a positive integer. Then the movement of G is defined as move(G):=sup Γ {|Γg\Γ| | g ∈ G}.It was shown by Praeger that if move(G) = m,then |Ω| 3m + t-1,where t is the number of G-orbits on.In this paper, all intransitive permutation groups with degree 3m+t-1 which have maximum bound are classified.Indeed,a positive answer to her question that whether the upper bound |Ω| = 3m + t-1 for |Ω| is sharp for every t > 1 is given.  相似文献

In this article, we consider the following problem: Given a bipartite graph G and a positive integer k, when does G have a 2‐factor with exactly k components? We will prove that if G = (V1, V2, E) is a bipartite graph with |V1| = |V2| = n ≥ 2k + 1 and δ (G) ≥ ⌈n/2⌉ + 1, then G contains a 2‐factor with exactly k components. We conjecture that if G = (V1, V2; E) is a bipartite graph such that |V1| = |V2| = n ≥ 2 and δ (G) ≥ ⌈n/2⌉ + 1, then, for any bipartite graph H = (U1, U2; F) with |U1| ≤ n, |U2| ≤ n and Δ (H) ≤ 2, G contains a subgraph isomorphic to H. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Let k(y) > 0, 𝓁(y) > 0 for y > 0, k(0) = 𝓁(0) = 0 and limy → 0k(y)/𝓁(y) exists; then the equation L(u) ≔ k(y)uxx – ∂y(𝓁(y)uy) + a(x, y)ux = f(x, y, u) is strictly hyperbolic for y > 0 and its order degenerates on the line y = 0. Consider the boundary value problem Lu = f(x, y, u) in G, u|AC = 0, where G is a simply connected domain in ℝ2 with piecewise smooth boundary ∂G = ABACBC; AB = {(x, 0) : 0 ≤ x ≤ 1}, AC : x = F(y) = ∫y0(k(t)/𝓁(t))1/2dt and BC : x = 1 – F(y) are characteristic curves. Existence of generalized solution is obtained by a finite element method, provided f(x, y, u) satisfies Carathéodory condition and |f(x, y, u)| ≤ Q(x, y) + b|u| with QL2(G), b = const > 0. It is shown also that each generalized solution is a strong solution, and that fact is used to prove uniqueness under the additional assumption |f(x, y, u1) – f(x, y, u2| ≤ C|u1u2|, where C = const > 0.  相似文献

Let G be a graph of order n and k ≥ 0 an integer. It is conjectured in [8] that if for any two vertices u and v of a 2(k + 1)‐connected graph G,d G (u,v) = 2 implies that max{d(u;G), d(v;G)} ≥ (n/2) + 2k, then G has k + 1 edge disjoint Hamilton cycles. This conjecture is true for k = 0, 1 (see cf. [3] and [8]). It will be proved in this paper that the conjecture is true for every integer k ≥ 0. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Let G be a simple graph with n vertices and m edges. Let λ1, λ2,…, λn, be the adjacency spectrum of G, and let μ1, μ2,…, μn be the Laplacian spectrum of G. The energy of G is E(G) = n∑i=1|λi|, while the Laplacian energy of G is defined as LE(G) = n∑i=1|μi-2m/n| Let γ1, γ2, ~ …, γn be the eigenvalues of Hermite matrix A. The energy of Hermite matrix as HE(A) = n∑i=1|γi-tr(A)/n| is defined and investigated in this paper. It is a natural generalization of E(G) and LE(G). Thus all properties about energy in unity can be handled by HE(A).  相似文献
