A series of poly(2‐methoxyethyl vinyl ether)s with narrow molecular weight distributions and with perfectly defined end groups of varying hydrophobicities was successfully synthesized by base‐assisting living cationic polymerization. The end group was shown to greatly affect the temperature‐induced phase separation behavior of aqueous solutions (lower critical solution temperature‐type phase separation) or organic solutions (upper critical solution temperature‐type phase separation) of the polymers. The cloud points were also influenced largely by the molecular weight and concentration of the polymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Various types of fluorine‐containing star‐shaped poly(vinyl ether)s were successfully synthesized by crosslinking reactions of living polymers based on living cationic polymerization. Star polymers with fluorinated arm chains were prepared by the reaction between a divinyl ether and living poly(vinyl ether)s with fluorine groups (C4F9, C6F13, and C8F17) at the side chain using cationogen/Et1.5AlCl1.5 in a fluorinated solvent (dichloropentafluoropropanes), giving star‐shaped fluorinated polymers in high yields with a relatively narrow molecular weight distribution. The concentration of living polymers for the crosslinking reaction and the molar feed ratio of a bifunctional vinyl ether to living polymers affected the yield and molecular weight of the star polymers. Star polymers with block arms were prepared by a linking reaction of living block copolymers of a fluorinated segment and a nonfluorinated segment. Heteroarm star‐shaped polymers containing two‐ or three‐arm species were synthesized using a mixture of different living polymer species for the reaction with a bifunctional vinyl ether. The obtained polymers underwent temperature‐induced solubility transitions in various organic solvents, and their concentrated solutions underwent sol–gel transitions, based on the solubility transition of a thermoresponsive fluorinated segment. Furthermore, a slight amount of fluorine groups were shown to be effective for physical gelation when those were located at the arm ends of a star polymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic graft polymers of vinyl ethers (VEs) ( 6 ) where each branch consists of a hydrophilic polyalcohol and a hydrophobic poly(alkyl vinyl ether) segment were prepared on the basis of living cationic polymerization, and their properties and functions were compared with the corresponding amphiphilic star-shaped polymers. In toluene at ?15°C, the HI/ZnI2-initiated living block polymer 2 of an ester-containing VE (CH2? CHOCH2CH2OCOCH3) and isobutyl VE (IBVE) was terminated with the diethyl 2-(vinyloxy)ethylmalonate anion [ 3 ; ΦC(COOEt)2CH2CH2OCH ? CH2] ( 2/3 = 1/2 mole ratio) to give a macromonomer ( 4 ), H[CH2CH(OCH2CH2OCOCH3)] m-[CH2CH(OiBu)]n? C(COOEt)2CH2CH2OCH ? CH2 (m = 5, n = 15; M?n = 2600, M?w/M?n = 1.13, 1.10 vinyl groups/chain). Subsequently, 4 was homopolymerized with HI/ZnI2 in toluene at ?15°C. In 3 h, 85% of 4 was consumed and a graft polymer ( 5 ) was obtained [M?w = 15000, DPn (for 4 ) = 6]. The apparent M?w (10,900) of 5 by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) is smaller than that by light scattering as well as that (18,300) by SEC of the corresponding linear polymer with the almost same molecular weight, indicating the formation of a multi-branched structure. Hydrolysis of the pendant esters in 5 gave the amphiphilic graft polymer 6 where each branch consists of a hydrophilic polyalcohol and a hydrophobic poly(IBVE) segment. The graft polymer 6 was found to interact specifically with small organic molecules (guests) with polar functional groups, and 6 differed in solubility and host-guest interaction from the corresponding star-shaped polymer. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The addition of dialkyl (R = Me or Et) carbonates to poly(oxyethylene)-based solid polymeric electrolytes resulted in enhanced ionic conductivities. Relatively high conductivities in lithium batteries with solutions of lithium salts in di(oligooxyethylene) carbonates such as R( OCH2 CH2 )nOC(O) O ( CH2CH2O )mR (R = Et, n = 1, 2, or 3, m = 0, 1, 2, or 3) and related carbonates were obtained. In this respect, related comb-shaped poly(oligooxyethylene carbonate) vinyl ethers of the type  CH2CH(OR) were prepared [R = ( OCH2 CH2 )nOC(O) O ( CH2CH2O )mR′; (1) n = 2 or 3, m = 0, R′ = Et; (2) n = 2 or 3; m = 3, R′ = Me]. The direct preparation of derived target polymers of this class by polymerization of the corresponding vinyl ether-type monomers could not be achieved because of a rapid in situ decarboxylative decomposition of these monomers (as formed) during the final step of their synthesis. Instead, a prepolymer was prepared by a living cationic polymerization of CH2CH (OCH2CH2 )n O C(O) CH3 (n = 2 or 3). The hydrolysis of its pendant ester groups, followed by the reaction of the hydrolyzed prepolymer with each of several alkyl chloroformates of the type Cl C(O) O( CH2CH2O )mR′ (m = 0, 2, or 3, R′ = Me or Et) resulted in the corresponding target polymers. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock copolymers consisting of a multibranched polymethacrylate segment with densely grafted poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] pendants and a poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) segment were synthesized by a combination of living cationic polymerization and RAFT polymerization. A macromonomer having both a poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] backbone and a terminal methacryloyl group was synthesized by living cationic polymerization. The sequential RAFT copolymerizations of the macromonomer and N‐isopropylacrylamide in this order were performed in aqueous media employing 4‐cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate as a chain transfer agent and 4,4′‐azobis(4‐cyanopentanoic acid) as an initiator. The obtained diblock copolymers possessed relatively narrow molecular weight distributions and controlled molecular weights. The thermoresponsive properties of these polymers were investigated. Upon heating, the aqueous solutions of the diblock copolymers exhibited two‐stage thermoresponsive properties denoted by the appearance of two cloud points, indicating that the densely grafted poly[2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethyl vinyl ether] pendants and the poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) segments independently responded to temperature. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The living cationic polymerization of 4‐[2‐(vinyloxy)ethoxy]azobenzene (AzoVE) was achieved with various Lewis acids in the presence of an ester as an added base. When Et1.5AlCl1.5 was used as a catalyst, the living polymerization system was controllable by UV irradiation as a result of cis and trans isomerization of the azobenzene side groups. Furthermore, an initiating system consisting of SnCl4 and EtAlCl2 realized fast living polymerization of AzoVE. The polymerization rate of this system was 3 orders of magnitude faster than that obtained with Et1.5AlCl1.5. Poly(4‐[2‐(vinyloxy)ethoxy]azobenzene) was soluble in a diethyl ether/hexane mixture at 25 °C but became insoluble upon irradiation with UV light. This phase‐transition behavior was sensitive and reversible upon irradiation with UV or visible light and reflected the change in polarity occurring with cis and trans isomerization of the azobenzene side groups in the polymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Living cationic polymerization of alkoxyethyl vinyl ether [CH2?CHOCH2CH2OR; R: CH3 (MOVE), C2H5 (EOVE)] and related vinyl ethers with oxyethylene units in the pendant was achieved by 1-(isobutoxy)ethyl acetate ( 1 )/Et1.5AlCl1.5 initiating system in the presence of an added base (ethyl acetate or THF) in toluene at 0°C. The polymers had a very narrow molecular weight distribution (M?w/M?n = 1.1–1.2) and the M?n proportionally increased with the progress of the polymerization reaction. On the other hand, the polymerization by 1 /EtAlCl2 initiating system in the presence of ethyl acetate, which produces living polymer of isobutyl vinyl ether, yielded the nonliving polymer. When an aqueous solution of the polymers thus obtained was heated, the phase separation phenomenon was clearly observed in each polymer at a definite critical temperature (Tps). For example, Tps was 70°C for poly(MOVE), and 20°C for poly(EOVE) (1 wt % aqueous solution, M?n ~ 2 × 104). The phase separation for each case was quite sensitive (ΔTps = 0.3–0.5°C) and reversible on heating and cooling. The Tps or ΔTps was clearly dependent not only on the structure of polymer side chains (oxyethylene chain length and ω-alkyl group), but also on the molecular weight (M?n = 5 × 103-7 × 104) and its distribution. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Water-soluble amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesized by the living cationic polymerization of methyl vinyl ether (hydrophilic block) and its subsequent termination with n-alcohols of chain lengths varying from one to eight, and three n-alkyl carboxylic acids with 10, 12, and 18 carbon atoms. Additionally, water and ethylene glycol were tested as terminating agents. The extent of the functionalization was determined using 1H NMR spectroscopy. The cloud points of 1% w/w aqueous solutions of the polymers as determined by turbidimetry decreased from 32 to 21°C as the number of carbon atoms of the terminating agent increased. Aqueous GPC revealed micellization of the stearic acid-terminated block copolymer, while the other block copolymers existed mainly as unimers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. A Polym. One-pot, spontaneous, and in-situ incorporation of Ru(II) complexes into a microgel (solubilized nanometer-scale network) has been achieved in near quantitative efficiency by a polymer-linking reaction of linear living poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with a bifunctional methacrylate (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or bisphenol A dimethacrylate; linking agent) and a phosphine-ligand monomer [diphenyl-4-styryl-phosphine ( 3 ); i.e., CH2CH C6H4p-PPh2] in the RuCl2(PPh3)3-catalyzed living radical polymerization. The products were Ru-bearing. PMMA-armed star polymers with a microgel-core that consisted of a copolymer network of the linking agent and 3 . Upon the network formation, the phosphine ligands efficiently encapsulated RuCl2(PPh3)3, thus achieving a polymer catalyst directly from a polymerization catalyst. Colored dark brown-red, the star polymers exhibited UV-vis absorptions originating from the entrapped complex (3.1–7.4 × 10−5 mol Ru/g of polymer), the incorporation efficiency being close to 100% with respect to the original polymerization-catalyst. Detailed spectroscopic characterization showed the following: an absolute molecular weight of 1.7 × 105 to 1.7 × 106, an arm number of 11–92 arms/polymer, and a radius of gyration of 8–19 nm (in DMF). Direct observation of the individual star molecules in solid state was achieved by transmission electron microscopy (unstained; 2–3 nm dark dots for the core) and atomic force microscopy (semi-circular images). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF‐MS) was utilized for the analysis of polymers obtained by the living cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) with the HCl‐VE adduct/SnCl4/n‐Bu4NCl initiating system in CH2Cl2 at −78 °C. Under optimized analysis conditions, well‐resolved spectra were obtained for samples with number‐average molecular weights of ≤104 with the use of 1,8‐dihydroxy‐9(10H)‐anthracenone (dithranol) as a matrix and sodium trifluoroacetate as an added salt. The MS spectra showed only one series of peaks separated exactly by the mass of the IBVE. The observed mass of each peak was in good agreement with the theoretical one, which possesses one initiator fragment at the α end and one methoxy group originated from quenching with methanol at the ω end. Thus, detailed end group analysis is possible for poly(VE). © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 38: 4023–4031, 2000  相似文献

For the precision synthesis of primary amino functional polymers, cationic polymerization of a phthalimide‐containing vinyl ether monomer precursor, 2‐vinyloxyethyl phthalimide (PIVE), was examined using a base‐assisting initiating system. Living polymerization of PIVE in CH2Cl2 in the presence of 1,4‐dioxane as an added base yielded nearly monodispersed polymers (Mw/Mn < 1.1) and higher molecular weight polymers, which have never been obtained using other initiating systems. Furthermore, block copolymers with hydrophobic or hydrophilic groups could be prepared. The deprotection of the pendant phthalimide groups gave well‐defined pH‐responsive polymers with pendant primary amino groups. ABA‐type triblock copolymers and AB‐type star diblock copolymers with poly(2‐adamantyl vinyl ether) [poly(2‐AdVE)] hard outer segments and poly(n‐butyl vinyl ether) [poly(NBVE)] soft inner segments were synthesized by sequential living cationic copolymerization. Although both the two polymer segments were composed solely of poly(vinyl ether) backbones and hydrocarbon side chains, they were segregated into microphase‐separated structure, so that the block copolymers formed thermoplastic elastomers. Both the ABA‐type triblock copolymers and the AB‐type star diblock copolymers exhibited rubber elasticity over wide temperature range. For example, the ABA‐type triblock copolymers showed rubber elasticity from about ?53 °C to about 165 °C and the AB‐type star diblock copolymer did from about ?47 °C to 183 °C with a similar composition of poly(2‐AdVE) and poly(NBVE) segments in the dynamic mechanical analysis. The AB‐type star diblock copolymers exhibited higher tensile strength and elongation at break than the ABA‐type triblock copolymers. The thermal decomposition temperatures of both the block copolymers were as high as 321–331 °C, indicating their high thermal stability. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New sequence-regulated macromonomers ( 3 ) with a vinyl ether terminal were prepared by the HI/ZnI2-mediated living cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers: CH3? CH(OR1)? CH2CH(OR2)? C(COOEt)2CH2CH2OCH?CH2 ( 3a : R1 = nBu, R2 = CH2CH2OCOPh; 3b : R1 = iOct, R2 = CH2CH2Cl). The synthesis consisted of three consecutive steps: (i) quantitative addition of hydrogen iodide to the first vinyl ether into an adduct [CH3? CH(OR1)? l]; (ii) propagation of a second vinyl ether from the adduct in the presence of zinc iodide; and (iii) quenching the resulting AB-type heterodimeric living intermediate with a carbanion [θC(COOEt)2CH2CH2OCH?CH2] carrying a vinyl ether group. The HI/ZnI2-initiated living cationic polymerization of 3a and 3b yielded narrowly distributed polymers $\left( {\overline {DP}} _{_n } \sim 10 \right)$ consisting of a poly(vinyl ether) backbone and sequence-regulated oligomer branches. The terminal vinyl ether function of 3 was also utilized to prepare pentamers and hexamers with controlled sequence of functional vinyl ethers by selective dimerization and chain extension reactions with HI/ZnI2. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Telechelic ( 8 ) and end-functionalized four-arm star polymers ( 9 ) were synthesized through the coupling reactions of end-functionalized living poly(isobutyl vinyl ether) ( 5; DP n ~ 10) with the bi-and tetrafunctional silyl enol ethers, H4-nC? [CH2OC6H4C(OSiMe3) = CH2]n ( 3: n = 2; 4: n = 4). The precursor polymers 5 were prepared by living cationic polymerization with functionalized initiators, CH3CH(Cl)OCH2CH2X(6), in conjunction with zinc chloride in methylene chloride at ?15°C. The initiators 6 were obtained by the addition of hydrogen chloride gas to vinyl ethers bearing pendant functional groups X , including acetoxy [? OC(O)CH3], styryl (? OCH2C6H4-p-CH = CH2), and methacryloyl [? OC(O)C(CH3) = CH2]. The coupling reactions with 3 and 4 in methylene chloride at ?15°C for 24 h afforded the end-functionalized multiarmed polymers ( 8 and 9 ) in high yield (>91%), where those with styryl or methacryloyl groups are new multifunctional macromonomers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In the living cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE) by the CH3CH (OiBu) OCOCH3 ( 1 )/EtAlCl2 initiating system in the presence of the added base in hexane at +40°C, the stability of the initiating system 1 /EtAlCl2, which form initiating species CH3CH (OiBu) derived from 1 , was investigated. In the presence of the Lewis base such as ethyl acetate or 1,4-dioxane, the active species was stable for 300 min even at +40°C in the absence of IBVE, and the living polymers were quantitatively obtained by adding IBVE. However, the active species was partly consumed by side reactions during the standing time for 60 min in the presence of a less basic additive such as ethyl benzoate, and about 50% of the active species was deactivated in the presence of methyl chloroacetate. Consequently, in the case of a less basic additive such as methyl chloroacetate (which was effective for the fast living polymerization), it can be seen that the careful selection of polymerization conditions was required. The living polymerization rate was dependent on the second order of EtAlCl2 concentration. EtAlCl2 induced the cleavage of 1 into CH3CH (OiBu) and EtAl?Cl2(OCOCH3), and the reactivity of CH3CH (OiBu) and propagating carbocation may be controlled by EtAl?Cl2(OCOCH3) with the aid of other EtAlCl2. Et1.5AlCl1.5 exists as a bimetallic complex of EtAlCl2 and Et2AlCl, and it is expected that the polymers having a bimodal molecular weight distribution will be obtained due to two kinds of counteranions coming from EtAlCl2 and Et2AlCl. However, in the cationic polymerization of IBVE by 1 /Et1.5AlCl1.5 in the presence of ethyl acetate, the living polymer exhibiting a unimodal and very narrow molecular weight distribution was obtained. Thereby, it was suggested that the counteranions, EtAl?Cl2(OCOCH3) and Et2Al?Cl(OCOCH3), exchange rapidly with each other. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
