Understanding the effect of repulsive interaction between blocks on crystallization in block copolymers is beneficial for the design and development of sophisticated nanostructures. Dynamic Monte Carlo simulations were performed to reveal the crystallization mechanism of block copolymers containing one‐dimensional nanofiller under different repulsive interaction strengths between crystallizable and noncrystallizable blocks. During crystallization, crystalline morphology is determined by the competition between segmental orientation perpendicular to microphase interfaces dominated by microphase separation and that along the direction of the long axis of the nanofiller controlled by interfacial interaction. As the repulsive interaction between different blocks is strengthened, the competition between microphase separation and interfacial interaction is intensified, eventually leading to an increase in crystallization rate and a degradation in crystalline morphology. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermosetting blends of a biodegradable poly(ethylene glycol)‐type epoxy resin (PEG‐ER) and poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared via an in situ curing reaction of poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) and maleic anhydride (MAH) in the presence of PCL. The miscibility, phase behavior, crystallization, and morphology of these blends were investigated. The uncured PCL/PEGDGE blends were miscible, mainly because of the entropic contribution, as the molecular weight of PEGDGE was very low. The crystallization and melting behavior of both PCL and the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) segment of PEGDGE were less affected in the uncured PCL/PEGDGE blends because of the very close glass‐transition temperatures of PCL and PEGDGE. However, the cured PCL/PEG‐ER blends were immiscible and exhibited two separate glass transitions, as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. There existed two phases in the cured PCL/PEG‐ER blends, that is, a PCL‐rich phase and a PEG‐ER crosslinked phase composed of an MAH‐cured PEGDGE network. The crystallization of PCL was slightly enhanced in the cured blends because of the phase‐separated nature; meanwhile, the PEG segment was highly restricted in the crosslinked network and was noncrystallizable in the cured blends. The phase structure and morphology of the cured PCL/PEG‐ER blends were examined with scanning electron microscopy; a variety of phase morphologies were observed that depended on the blend composition. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In order to modify the properties of poly(butylene succinate), poly(diethylene glycol succinate) (PDGS) segment was incorporated by chain‐extension reaction of dihydroxyl‐terminated PBS and PDGS precursors using hexamethylene diisocyanate as a chain extender to form PBS‐b‐PDGS multiblock copolymers. The chemical structure and basic physical properties of the multiblock copolyesters were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), wide angle X‐ray diffraction, and tensile testing. The results suggested that the incorporation of PDGS segments would increase the elongation at break of PBS significantly while decrease its melting temperature and crystallization temperature slightly. The isothermal crystallization kinetics studied by DSC and polarized optical microscopy indicated that the crystallization rate of the multiblock polymers decreased gradually with increasing PDGS segment content while the crystallization mechanism kept unchanged and the spherulitic growth rate of the multiblock copolymers decreased gradually with increase in PDGS content due to its diluent effect to the crystallization of PBS segments. The morphology and crystallization behavior of poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) blends compatibilized with graft copolymers were investigated. PPS‐blend‐PET compositions were prepared in which the viscosity of the PPS phase was varied to assess the morphological implications. The dispersed‐phase particle size was influenced by the combined effects of the ratio of dispersed‐phase viscosity to continuous‐phase viscosity and reduced interfacial tension due to the addition of PPS‐graft‐PET copolymers to the blends. In the absence of graft copolymer, the finest dispersion of PET in a continuous phase of PPS was achieved when the viscosity ratio between blend components was nearly equal. As expected, PET particle sizes increased as the viscosity ratio diverged from unity. When graft copolymers were added to the blends, fine dispersions of PET were achieved despite large differences in the viscosities of PPS and PET homopolymers. The interfacial activity of the PPS‐graft‐PET copolymer appeared to be related to the molecular weight ratio of the PPS homopolymer to the PPS segment of the graft copolymer (MH/MA). With increasing solubilization of the PPS graft copolymer segment by the PPS homopolymer, the particle size of the PET dispersed phase decreased. In crystallization studies, the presence of the PPS phase increased the crystallization temperature of PET. The magnitude of the increase in the PET crystallization temperature coincided with the viscosity ratio and extent of the PPS homopolymer solubilization in the graft copolymer. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The structure and thermodynamic properties of atactic and isotactic acrylic and methacrylic polymers containing 16–18 carbon atoms in the n-aliphatic side chains, and of copolymers of hexadecyl acrylate with isopropyl acrylate were studied by means of x-ray and differential thermal analysis. The crystallization of branched acrylic and methacrylic polymers and of acrylic copolymers proceeds in the form of a hexagonal crystal, regardless of the configuration of the backbone chain. Methods of ordering branched macromolecules are proposed, and the melting points, heats and entropies of fusion determined. The role of flexibility of the backbone chains in ordering and the crystallization processes was determined. In the case of poly(n-alkyl acrylates) the backbone chain is involved in the crystalline lattice; this is not the case in methacrylates and copolymers of hexadecyl acrylate with isopropyl acrylate. Some similarity was assumed between the structure of biopolymers and synthetic branched polymers.  相似文献

This article discusses a new chemical route to prepare maleic anhydride (MA) grafted polyethylene and polypropylene polymers with controlled molecular structure, that is, MA grafted content and polymer molecular weight and composition distributions. The chemistry involves a free radical graft reaction of maleic anhydride with poly(ethylene‐co‐p‐methylstyrene) and poly(propylene‐co‐p‐methylstyrene) copolymers. Under a suspension reaction condition, the grafting reaction takes place selectively on the p‐methylstyrene units in the copolymer, due to high reactivity of p‐methyl group and favorable mixing between p‐methylstyrene units and chemical reagents in the swollen amorphous phases. The resulting polymer shows no detectable molecular weight change during the reaction, and the MA grafted content increases with the increase of initiator and p‐methylstyrene concentrations. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An Erratum has been published for this article in J. Polym. Sci. Part A: Polym. Chem. (2004) 42(22) 5845 New multiblock copolymers derived from poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared with the coupling reaction between PLLA and PCL oligomers with ? NCO terminals. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 13C NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the copolymers and the results showed that PLLA and PCL were coupled by the reaction between ? NCO groups at the end of the PCL and ? OH (or ? COOH) groups at the end of the PLLA. DSC data indicated that the different compositions of PLLA and PCL had an influence on the thermal and crystallization properties including the glass‐transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (TM), crystallizing temperature (Tc), melting enthalpy (ΔHm), crystallizing enthalpy (ΔHc), and crystallinity. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was employed to study the effect of the composition of PLLA and PCL and reaction time on the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the copolymers. The weight‐average molecular weight of PLLA–PCL multiblock copolymers was up to 180,000 at a composition of 60% PLLA and 40% PCL, whereas that of the homopolymer of PLLA was only 14,000. A polarized optical microscope was used to observe the crystalline morphology of copolymers; the results showed that all polymers exhibited a spherulitic morphology. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The relationships among glass transition, crystallization, melting, and crystal morphology of poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK)/poly(other imide) (PEI) blends was studied by thermal, optical and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) methods. Two types of PAEK were chosen for this work: poly(aryl ether ether ketone), PEEK, and poly(aryl ether ketone ketone), PEKK, which have distinctly different crystallization rates. Both PAEKs show complete miscibility with PEI in the amorphous phase. As PAEK crystallizes, the noncrystallizable PEI component is rejected from the crystalline region, resulting in a broad amorphous population, which was indicated by the broadening and the increase of Tg over that of the purely amorphous mixture. The presence of the PEI component significantly decreases the bulk crystallization and crystal growth rate of PAEK, but the equilibrium melting temperature and crystal surface free energies are not affected. The morphology of the PEI segregation was investigated by SAXS measurements. The results indicated that the inter(lamellar-bundle) PEI trapping morphology was dominant in the PEEK/PEI blends under rapid crystallization conditions, whereas the interspherulitic morphology was dominant in the slow crystallizing PEKK/PEI blends. These morphologies were qualitatively explained by the expression δ=D/G, where G was the crystal growth rate and D was the mutual diffusion coefficient. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Statistical copolymers of di(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO2MA) and tri(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (MEO3MA) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) providing copolymers with controlled composition and molecular weights ranging from Mn = 8,300–56,500 with polydispersity indexes (Mw/Mn) between 1.19 and 1.28. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the copolymers increased with the mole fraction of MEO3MA in the copolymer over the range from 26 to 52 °C. The average hydrodynamic diameter, measured by dynamic light scattering, varied with temperature above the LCST. These two monomers were also block copolymerized by ATRP to form polymers with molecular weight of Mn = 30,000 and Mw/Mn from 1.12 to 1.21. The LCST of the block copolymers shifted toward the LCST of the major segment, as compared to the value measured for the statistical copolymers at the same composition. As temperature increased, micelles, consisting of aggregated PMEO2MA cores and PMEO3MA shell, were formed. The micelles aggregated upon further heating to precipitate as larger particles. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 194–202, 2008  相似文献

The morphological development and crystallization behavior of a poly(ethylene terephthalate)/poly(hydroxyl ether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) blend were studied with time‐resolved light scattering, optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). During annealing at 280 °C, liquid–liquid phase separation via spinodal decomposition proceeded in the melt‐extruded specimen. After the formation of a domain structure, the blend slowly underwent phase homogenization by the interchange reactions between the two polymers. Specimens annealed for various times (ts) at 280 °C were subjected to a temperature drop and the effects of liquid‐phase changes on crystallization were then investigated. The shifts in the position of the cold‐crystallization peaks indicated that the crystallization rate is associated with the composition change of the separated phases as well as the change of the sequence distribution in polymer chains during annealing. The morphological parameters at the lamellar level were determined by a correlation function analysis on the SAXS data. The crystal thickness (lc) increased with ts, whereas the amorphous layer thickness (la) showed little dependence on ts. Observation of a constant la value revealed that a large number of noncrystallizable species formed by the interchange reactions between the two polymers were excluded from the lamellar stacks and resided in the interfibrillar regions, interspherulitic regions, or both. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miktoarm star‐shaped poly(lactic acid) (PLA) copolymer, (PLLA)2‐core‐(PDLA)2, was synthesized via stepwise ring‐opening polymerization of lactide with dibromoneopentyl glycol as the starting material. 1H NMR and FTIR spectroscopy proved the feasibility of synthetic route and the successful preparation of star‐shaped PLA copolymers. The results of FTIR spectroscopy and XRD showed that the stereocomplex structure of the copolymer could be more perfect after solvent dissolution treatment. Effect of chain architectures on crystallization was investigated by studying the nonisothermal and isothermal crystallization of the miktoarm star‐shaped PLA copolymer and other stereocomplexes. Nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy tests indicated that (PLLA)2‐core‐(PDLA)2 exhibited the fastest formation of a stereocomplex in a dynamic test due to its special structure. In isothermal crystallization tests, the copolymer exhibited the fast crystal growth rate and the most perfect crystal morphology. The results reveal that the unique molecular structure has an important influence on the crystallization of the miktoarm star‐shaped PLA copolymer. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. The thermal properties, crystallization, and morphology of amphiphilic poly(D ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PDLA‐b‐PDMAEMA) and poly (L ‐lactide)‐b‐poly(N,N‐dimethylamino‐2‐ethyl methacrylate) (PLLA‐b‐PDMAEMA) copolymers were studied and compared to those of the corresponding poly(lactide) homopolymers. Additionally, stereocomplexation of these copolymers was studied. The crystallization kinetics of the PLA blocks was retarded by the presence of the PDMAEMA block. The studied copolymers were found to be miscible in the melt and the glassy state. The Avrami theory was able to predict the entire crystallization range of the PLA isothermal overall crystallization. The melting points of PLDA/PLLA and PLA/PLA‐b‐PDMAEMA stereocomplexes were higher than those formed by copolymer mixtures. This indicates that the PDMAEMA block is influencing the stability of the stereocomplex structures. For the low molecular weight samples, the stereocomplexes particles exhibited a conventional disk‐shape structure and, for high molecular weight samples, the particles displayed unusual star‐like shape morphology. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The lamellar‐level morphology of an extruded poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/poly(ethylene‐2,6‐naphthalate) (PEN) blend was investigated with small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). Measurements were made as a function of the annealing time in the melt and the crystallization temperature. The characteristic morphological parameters at the lamellar level were determined by correlation function analysis of the SAXS data. At a low crystallization temperature of 120 °C, the increased amorphous layer thickness was identified in the blend, indicating that some PEN was incorporated into the interlamellar regions of PET during crystallization. The blend also showed a larger lamellar thickness than pure PET. A reason for the increase in the lamellar thickness might be that the formation of thinner lamellar stacks by secondary crystallization was significantly restricted because of the increased glass‐transition temperature. At high crystallization temperatures above 200 °C, the diffusion rates of noncrystallizable components were faster than the growth rates of crystals, with most of the noncrystallizable components escaping from the lamellar stacks. As a result, the blend showed an interfibrillar or interspherulitic morphology. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 317–324, 2002  相似文献

Crosslinked polymer beads containing regions of acidic and basic groups are the preferred structures for the efficient operation of a thermally regenerable ion-exchange process. Such systems can be prepared by various methods. Here the approach of using polymers and copolymers containing photo-labile groups as grafting sites is described. The polymers studied were polytriallylamine hydrochloride (polyTAA) and copolymers of propyldiallylamine hydrochloride (PDAA) and allyl benzoin methyl ether (ABME), of ABME and acrylic acid (AA), and of ABME and methyl acrylate (MA). The maximum amount of photografting of MA onto polyTAA was 12%. Very little photografting of MA onto PDAA:ABME copolymers was obtained. Photografting of TAA to AA:ABME and to MA:ABME copolymers occurred readily by using radiation of 360 nm wavelength, with the best yields of photografted polymer being about 60% when a MA:ABME copolymer was irradiated in a suspension. The effect of suspending medium, stirring rate, irradiation time, irradiation intensity, solvent, solids concentration, percentage of ABME in the MA:ABME copolymer, additional crosslinkers, surfactants, and the acid:base ratio in the hy-drolyzed resin prepared by photografting TAA onto MA:ABME copolymers on the yield, physical strength, shape, and ion-exchange properties of the resins is reported.  相似文献

The maleic anhydride‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs‐g‐MA) have been introduced into polypropylene/ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate (PP/EVA) blend. To clearly describe the effects of MWCNTs‐g‐MA on the morphology and mechanical properties of PP/EVA blends, the selective distribution of MWCNTs‐g‐MA in the blends is realized through different sample preparation methods, namely, MWCNTs‐g‐MA disperse in EVA phase and MWCNTs‐g‐MA disperse in PP matrix. The results show that the distribution of MWCNTs‐g‐MA has an important effect on the final morphology of EVA and the crystallization structure of PP matrix. Compared with PP/EVA binary blend, distribution of MWCNTs‐g‐MA in PP matrix induces the aggregation of EVA phase at high EVA content and the decrease of spherulite diameters of PP matrix simultaneously. However, when MWCNTs‐g‐MA are dispersed in the EVA phase, they induce more homogeneous distribution of EVA, and the crystallization behavior of PP is slightly affected by MWCNTs‐g‐MA. The corresponding mechanical properties including impact strength and tensile strength are tested and analyzed in the work. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The work reported in the preceding article in this series is extended by consideration of polysiloxane–ceramic composites based on atactic poly(methylphenylsiloxane) (PMPS) elastomers instead of poly(dimethylsiloxane). The former is noncrystallizable because of its stereochemically irregular structure, while the latter is crystallizable. In addition, some composites were prepared by the in situ precipitation of titania instead of silica. The resulting materials were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, equilibrium stress–strain measurements in elongation, small-angle neutron scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The moduli of the PMPS elastomers were found to increase significantly with increase in amount of either type of filler, with reinforcing upturns at high elongation in the case of the silica. Because the PMPS elastomers were amorphous, it is obvious that strain-induced crystallization is not required for these upturns in modulus. Titania did not give as good reinforcement as did silica, at least in the case of PMPS. Differences in interactions between the polymer and the two fillers are obviously important in this regard, but differences in particle morphology probably also contribute. Specifically, the titania “particles” were significantly larger than the silica particles when observed in TEM, and appeared to be much more porous. The actual domain size as measured by scattering, however, was only approximately 5% larger. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 1191–1200, 1998  相似文献

The thermal degradation of vinylidene chloride/methyl acrylate/phenylacetylene (VDC/MA/PA) terpolymers containing a constant 9 wt % methyl acrylate and small but varying amounts of phenylacetylene has been examined in the solid phase and in bibenzyl solution. Thermally promoted degradative dehydrochlorination, largely uncomplicated by methyl chloride formation, readily occurs at temperatures approaching 200°C. Incorporation of phenylacetylene into the polymer structure greatly facilitates degradative dehydrochlorination. Indeed, the presence of phenylacetylene induces the formation of polyene segments during the polymerization so that all the terpolymers, even at very low phenylacetylene loading, are tan in color. The decreased stability of polymers containing internal unsaturation arises from an increased rate of initiation for the degradation reaction. The propagation rate is largely unaffected by the level of unsaturation initially present in the polymer. Thus random double bonds have been identified as the principal defect sites responsible for the facile degradation of Saran copolymers. Species which promote the degradation of Saran polymers probably do so by facilitating the introduction of double bonds into the structure. The ratio of hydrogen chloride to stilbene formed for degradation of the terpolymers in bibenzyl solution is ca. 35:1. This is strongly reminiscent of PVDC degradation and suggests that for degradation of either the homopolymer or Saran copolymers the chain-carrying allylic radical pair does not dissociate to any appreciable extent as dehydrochlorination occurs.  相似文献

The polymers poly[(2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate] (PDMDMA) and four‐armed PDMDMA with well‐defined structures were prepared by the polymerization of (2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate (DMDMA) in the presence of an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator system. The successive hydrolyses of the polymers obtained produced the corresponding water‐soluble polymers poly(2,3‐dihydroxypropyl acrylate) (PDHPA) and four‐armed PDHPA. The controllable features for the ATRP of DMDMA were studied with kinetic measurements, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and NMR data. With the macroinitiators PDMDMA–Br and four‐armed PDMDMA–Br in combination with CuBr and 2,2′‐bipyridine, the block polymerizations of methyl acrylate (MA) with PDMDMA were carried out to afford the AB diblock copolymer PDMDMA‐b‐MA and the four‐armed block copolymer S{poly[(2,2‐dimethyl‐1,3‐dioxolane‐4yl) methyl acrylate]‐block‐poly(methyl acrylate)}4, respectively. The block copolymers were hydrolyzed in an acidic aqueous solution, and the amphiphilic diblock and four‐armed block copolymers poly(2,3‐dihydroxypropyl acrylate)‐block‐poly(methyl acrylate) were prepared successfully. The structures of these block copolymers were verified with NMR and GPC measurements. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 39: 3062–3072, 2001  相似文献

A series of chlorine‐containing polymers were prepared by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) followed by hydrogenation. This synthesis route was chosen specifically so that chain microstructures would be obtained that resembled copolymers of ethylene and vinyl chloride. The chlorine content was varied by the copolymerization of 5‐chlorocyclooctene and cyclooctene. Differential scanning calorimetry, light microscopy, tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and density were employed to characterize the polymers. The copolymers had certain restrictions on the length of the methylene sequence between substituted carbons, however, ROMP copolymerization introduced enough variation in the methylene sequence length that model copolymers with the equivalent of 14 mol % vinyl chloride or less closely resembled random copolymers of ethylene and vinyl chloride. These materials organized as spherulites and exhibited the orthorhombic crystal form. Constraints on the placement of chlorine atoms strongly affected the crystallization of polymers with more than the equivalent of 14 mol % vinyl chloride. More regular chlorine substitution along the polyethylene chain translated into better ordered crystal structures with sharp melting peaks. The granular morphology of these materials at ambient temperature was interpreted as fringed micellar crystals. The WAXD patterns provided definitive evidence that chains in the fringed micelle took the hexagonal crystal form. The lower density hexagonal form facilitated the crystallization of short ethylene sequences and accommodated chlorine atoms more easily than the orthorhombic form. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
