A soluble poly(amic acid) precursor solution of fully rod-like poly(p-phenylene pyromellitimide) (PMDA-PDA) was spin cast on silicon substrates, followed by soft bake at 80–185°C and subsequent thermal imidization at various conditions over 185–400°C in nitrogen atmosphere to be converted to the polyimide in films. Residual stress generated at the interface was measured in situ during imidization. In addition, the imidized films were characterized in the aspect of polymer chain orientation and ordering by prism coupling and X-ray diffraction. The soft-baked precursor film revealed a residual stress of 16–28 MPa at room temperature, depending on the soft bake condition: higher temperature and longer time in the soft bake gave higher residual stress. The stress variation in the soft-baked precursor film was not significantly reflected in the final stress in the resultant polyimide film. However, the residual stress in the polyimide film varied sensitively with variations in imidization process parameters, such as imidization temperature, imidization steps, heating rate, and film thickness. The polyimide film exhibited a wide range of residual stress, −7 MPa to 8 MPa at room temperature, depending on the imidization condition. Both rapid imidization and low-temperature imidization generated high stress in the tension mode in the polyimide film, whereas slow imidization as well as high temperature imidization gave high stress in the compression mode. Thus, a moderate imidization condition, a single- or two-step imidization at 300°C for 2 h with a heating rate of < 10 K/min was proposed to give a relatively low stress in the polyimide film of < 10 μm thickness. However, once a precursor film was thermally imidized at a chosen process condition, the residual stress–temperature profile was insensitive to variations in the cooling process. All the films imidized were optically anisotropic, regardless of the imidization history, indicating that rod-like PMDA-PDA polyimide chains were preferentially aligned in the film plane. However, its degree of in-plane chain orientation varied on the imidization history. It is directly correlated to the residual stress in the film, which is an in-plane characteristic. For films with residual stress in the tension mode, higher stress films exhibited lower out-of-plane birefringence, that is, lower in-plane chain orienta-tion. In contrast, in the compression mode, higher stress films showed higher in-plane chain orientation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 1261–1273, 1998  相似文献

Conventional synthesis of polyimides includes high‐temperature (160–350 °C) imidization of poly(amic acid)s. In the present work, imidization has been carried out at much lower temperatures (40–160 °C). 1,2,4,5,‐cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride (HPMDA) or pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) was polymerized with an aromatic diamine, 4,4′‐diaminodiphenylmethane (DDPM), to give poly(amic acid)s, which were then imidized chemically. Imidization was more than 90% complete even at the very low imidization temperature of 40 °C. It was found that the imidization occurs in two steps: an initial rapid cyclization and a subsequent slower cyclization. The activation energy for the rapid process was determined to be 4.3 kJ/mol, and that of the slower process, 4.8 kJ/mol. As the imidization temperature decreases, the transmittance of the resulting polyimides tends to gradually increase, the cutoff wavelength decreases and the color becomes pale. A partially aliphatic polyimide based on HPMDA and DDPM prepared at 40 °C yielded thin films that were highly transparent and colorless, and had good flexibility, solubility and thermal stability. The polyimide films prepared in this study may be good candidates for flexible, transparent plastic substrates in the display industry. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Two thermoplastic polyimides based on a common diamine (3,4′-ODA) were synthesized using different dianhydrides, namely ODPA and BPDA by a two step method. Molecular weight was controlled by using PA as an end capping agent. Effects of imidization degree on the mechanical properties and viscoelastic behavior of thermoplastic polyimide films were investigated. Film samples with varying degrees of imidization were characterized using FTIR, DMTA and tensile properties testing. It was found that two polyimides have different rates of imidization because of difference in monomer reactivity and molecular structure. It was observed that with an increase in imidization degree there was a decrease in thermoplastic response and a change in viscoelastic behavior from liquid-like to solid-like. With increase in imidization degree the tensile modulus and tensile strength of the films were increased, whereas elongation at break and tensile breaking energy were found to decrease after a certain imidization temperature.  相似文献

The effect of film thickness on the water‐sorption behaviors of poly(3,4′‐oxydiphenylene pyromellitimide) (PMDA‐3,4′ODA) films was gravimetrically investigated and interpreted with a Fickian diffusion model in films. The diffusion coefficient increased with increasing film thickness, whereas the water uptake and the activation energy decreased. Overall, the water‐sorption behaviors of PMDA‐3,4′ODA films are strongly dependent on the changes in morphological structure, which originated from the variation in the film thickness. As the film thickness increased, the molecular in‐plane orientation decreased, consequently leading to the increased diffusion coefficient and decreased activation energy. In contrast, the water uptake decreased with increasing film thickness because of the increase in the out‐of‐plane packing order. The diffusion coefficient and activation energy were strongly dependent on the in‐plane orientation in the films. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 39: 669–676, 2001  相似文献

Sequential poly(methyl acrylate)/poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) interpenetrating polymer networks with different poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) contents were prepared by free radical polymerization of hydroxyethyl acrylate inside the previously polymerized poly(methyl acrylate) network. Differential scanning calorimetry on dry samples shows that the interpenetrating polymer networks exhibit phase separation, and no differences are found between the glass transition temperatures of the two phases present in the interpenetrating polymer network and those of the pure components. Thermally stimulated depolarization current experiments were used to study the influence of water sorption on the mobility of the different molecular groups in the poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) phase of the interpenetrating polymer network. Isothermal water sorption of the interpenetrating polymer networks and pure poly(methyl acrylate) and poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) networks is analyzed with different theories to compare the behavior of the poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) phase in the interpenetrating polymer networks with that of the pure poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) network. Diffusion coefficients of water in the interpenetrating polymer networks are obtained by means of dynamic sorption experiments. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The elastic modulus El of the crystalline regions in the direction parallel to the chain axis was measured by X-ray diffraction for polyimide derived from polyamic acid (biphthalic dianhydride and p-phenylene diamine). These specimens were cured by two different routes: curing at 200 °C, and at 400 °C for 1 h, respectively (2STEPS), and curing from 80 °C to 400 °C stepwise (nine steps) for 1 h at each step (STEPWISE). The El values of 54–169 GPa were obtained for the STEPWISE specimen and 80–178 GPa for the 2STEPS specimen, depending on the meridional reflection employed for measurement of the El value. A linear relationship between the El value and the fiber identity period was obtained from each meridional diffraction, such that the El value increased with an increase in the fiber identity period. The El value of the fully extended structure was estimated to be 210 GPa. These are considered to be due to the coexistence of polymorphs with different skeletal structures. The crystalline regions of the 2STEPS specimen seems to consist of a more extended skeleton than those of the STEPWISE specimen. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The photosensitive poly(p-phenylene biphenylteracarboximide) (BPDA-PDA) precursor was synthesized by attaching photocross-linkable 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEM) monomer to its poly(amic acid) through acid/base complexation. The polyimide thin films were prepared by a conventional cast/softbake/thermal imidization process from the photosensitive precursors with various concentrations of DMAEM. The structure and properties of the polyimide films were investigated by small-angle and wide-angle x-ray scattering, refractive indices and birefringence analysis, residual stress and relaxation analysis, stress-strain analysis, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. In comparison with the polyimide film from the poly(amic acid), the films, which were imidized from the photosensitive precursors, exhibited a better molecular order and microstructure; however, they exhibited less molecular orientation in the film plane. Despite the enhancement in both the molecular order and microstructure, the film properties (i.e., mechanical properties, thermal expansion, residual stress, optical properties, dielectric constant, and water sorption) degraded overall due to both the decrease in molecular in-plane orientation and the formation of microvoids caused by the bulky photosensitive group during thermal imidization. That is, on one hand, the PSPI precursor formation provides an advantageous, direct patternability to the BPDA-PDA precursor, and on the other hand, it results in degraded properties to the resulting polyimide film. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The electrochemical properties of a poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) thin film prepared by vacuum deposition were investigated by cyclic voltammetry in organic and aqueous media with a lithium perchlorate electrolyte. The PPP thin film was able to undergo both n-doping and p-doping reversibly. In an aqueous medium, the cyclic voltammograms indicated the characteristic loop in a potential sweep. The loop was ascribed to the charge transfer on the PPP film surface and to an accumullation effect of the charge in the PPP film. A photocurrent was observed at the PPP film under UV light irradiation.  相似文献

Homogeneous precursor/precursor solutions with various compositions were obtained with appreciably high solid contents in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone from soluble poly(amic diethyl ester) precursors of rodlike poly(p-phenylene biphenyltetracarboximide) (BPDA-PDA) and flexible poly(4,4′-oxydiphenylene biphenyltetracarboximide) (BPDA-ODA), which are hydrolytically more stable as well as more soluble than the corresponding poly(amic acid)s being equilibrated with the constituent monomers. Both optical microscopic and light scattering measurements showed that the dried precursor blend films and resultant polyimide composite films were optically transparent, regardless of compositions and process conditions. The composite films showed a single Tg behavior. However, for the composite of 30 wt % BPDA-PDA dispersed in the matrix of 70 wt % BPDA-ODA, a smectic crystalline-like aggregation of the BPDA-PDA component was detected on wide-angle x-ray diffraction patterns, indicative of microscopic phase separation between the two components. This phase separation was not detected on the optical microscopy, light scattering, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis because of their resolution limits: Optical microscopy has a resolution of submicrometers, whereas dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and light scattering have a resolution of ca. 50 Å. Therefore, it is speculated that in the composite films BPDA-PDA and BPDA-ODA polyimide molecules have demixed on the scale of a few nanometers. The mean long periodicity, which was estimated from the small-angle x-ray scattering pattern, varied from 134 to 170 Å as the content of BPDA-ODA component increased. In addition, mechanical properties of the composite films were characterized. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A positive‐type photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) based on poly(amic acid) (PAA), a crosslinker 1,1,1‐tris{4‐[2‐(vinyloxy)ethoxy]phenyl}ethane (TVPE), a photoacid generator (PAG) (5‐propylsulfonyloxyimino‐5H‐thiophen‐2‐ylidene)‐2‐(methylphenyl)acetonitrile (PTMA), and a thermobase generator (TBG) t‐butyl 2,6‐dimethylpiperidine‐1‐carboxylate (BDPC) has been developed as a promising material in microelectronics. The PAA was prepared from 3,3′,4,4′‐biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) and 4,4′‐oxydianiline (ODA) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The PSPI, consisting of PAA (69 wt %), TPVE (21 wt %), PTMA (3 wt %), and BDPC (7 wt %), showed high sensitivity of 21 mJ/cm2 and a high contrast of 6.8 when it was exposed to a 436‐nm line (g‐line), postbaked at 90 °C for 5 min, and developed with 1.69 wt % TMAHaq. A clear positive image of 8 μm line and space pattern was printed on film, which was exposed to 50 mJ/cm2 of g‐line by a contact printing mode and fully converted to the corresponding polyimide (PI) pattern on heating at 200 °C, confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. Thus, this system will be a good candidate for next generation PSPIs. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 3362–3369, 2009  相似文献

The diffusion of NMP (n-methyl-pyrrolidinone) solvent in a semirigid rod-like PMDA-ODA (pyromellitic dianhydride-4,4′-oxydianiline) film coated on silicon is found to be case I diffusion at temperatures ranging from 30 to 90°C by the use of a bending beam technique. The diffusion constant increases for the 7.4 μm PMDA-ODA film (which was cured at 300°C) from 3.3 to 318 × 10?11 cm2/s as the diffusion temperature increases from 30 to 90°C. The corresponding hygroscopic stress in the direction parallel to the film decreases with the increase of temperature, possibly due to the softening of the film at elevated temperatures. The diffusion mechanism, however, changes from case II to case I in a rigid rod-like PMDA-PDA (pyromellitic dianhydride-p-phenylenediamine) film when the diffusion temperature increases. The change in the diffusion mechanism occurs at a higher temperature for thinner films, presumably due to higher ordering and/or orientation in the films. The activation energy for NMP diffusion in the PMDA-ODA films markedly decreases from 93 to 59 kJ/mole as the film thickness increases from 2.2 μm to 11.3 μm. This may also be attributed to decreased ordering in thicker films. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Water vapor sorption experiments have been conducted on Kevlar 49 at 30 degrees C over a range of water vapor pressures in 0-90% of saturation and on the as-polymerized form of the material at 30, 45, and 60 degrees C over a series of water vapor pressures of 0-60%, 0-25%, and 0-15%, respectively. For each of the differential steps in water vapor pressure, dynamic uptake curves were generated and analyzed according to a number of different mathematical models, including Fickian, Coaxial cylindrical, and intercalation models. The intercalation model was demonstrated to be the most successful model and considered two time-scales involved in the diffusion process, i.e., a penetrant-diffusive time-scale and a polymer-local-matrix-relaxation time-scale. The success of this model reinforces previously reported adsorption and desorption isotherms which suggested that water may penetrate into the surface layers of the polymer crystallite through a process known as intercalation.  相似文献

Environmental stress cracking (ESC) in poly(methyl methacrylate) under different humidity conditions has been investigated. Constant stress‐intensity factor (K) ring‐type specimens were prepared, and all specimens were equilibrated at five different humidity conditions for about two years. ESC tests were carried out under the same humidity as specimens had been stored. Acoustic emission (AE) signals during ESC tests were also measured to examine the crack‐growth behavior. The threshold K value (Kth) tended to increase with increasing humidity. At a relative humidity (RH) of 11%, crack growth occurred gradually until 40 ks under a K value of 0.70 MPam1/2, and then the crack‐growth rate began to increase and AE events were observed. A laser microscopic observation indicated that the crack extended by the coalescence between a main crack and a microcrack ahead of the main crack tip. AE signals generated are considered to be associated with the coalescence. At 98% RH, an incubation period where no crack growth was observed existed under a K value of 0.94 MPam1/2, but the crack began to grow suddenly after that incubation period. This suggests that the craze at the crack tip may become weaker with increasing loading time under high humidity. Although the crack‐growth rate at 98% RH was higher than that at 11% RH, no AE events were observed. This suggests that the crack extended stably in the craze at a crack tip, and sorbed water may make the craze growth easy. All the results suggest that two different ESC mechanisms are activated depending on sorbed water that are varied by humidity. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Tensile tests on poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were conducted to clarify the effects of humidity and strain rate on tensile properties, particularly Young's modulus. Prior to the tensile tests, specimens were kept under various humidity conditions at 293 K, which were the same as the test conditions, for a few months to adjust the sorbed water content in the specimens. The tensile tests were performed under each humidity condition at three different strain rates (approximately 1.4 × 10?3, 1.4 × 10?4, and 1.4 × 10?5 s?1). Stress‐strain curves changed with humidity and strain rate. Young's moduli were also measured at small applied stresses (below 6.7 MPa) under various humidity conditions at 293 K. Young's modulus decreases linearly with increasing humidity and a decreasing logarithm of strain rate. These results suggest that Young's modulus of PMMA can be expressed as a function of two independent parameters that are humidity and strain rate. A constitutive equation for Young's modulus of PMMA was proposed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 40: 460–465, 2002; DOI 10.1002/polb.10107  相似文献

Poly(amic ester) (PAE) is a soluble precursor of polyimide that has attracted interest from both the microelectronic and the flat-panel display industries because of its several important advantages, including excellent solubility, high hydrolytic stability, and solvent-free film formation, over the polyimide precursor, poly(amic acid), for which monomer-polymer equilibration always occurs in solution due to its carboxylic acid groups. In this study, poly(3,4'-oxydiphenylene pyromellitamic diethyl ester) (PMDA-3,4'-ODA PAE) was chosen as a PAE precursor, and its thermal imidization behavior in microscale thin films was investigated quantitatively for the first time using time-resolved infrared (IR) spectroscopy. In addition, the variations of the film refractive index and thickness with temperature and time were determined in detail from the time-resolved IR spectra and are fully interpreted in this paper by considering the imidization kinetics of the precursor.  相似文献

In this contribution, a theoretical modeling of the latex film formation is presented and compared to experimental results: water vapor permeability and latex film capacitance are studied as a function of acrylic acid content in poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate) latex films. It has been shown that both water uptake and water vapor permeability are mainly affected by film morphology which in turn is defined by intercolloidal interaction and drying rate.  相似文献

Random copolymers of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN) were synthesized by melt condensation. In a series of thin, solvent cast films of varying PEN content, acetone diffusivity and solubility were determined at 35°C and an acetone pressure of 5.4 cm Hg. The kinetics of acetone sorption in the copolymer films are well described by a Fickian model. Both solubility and diffusivity decrease with increasing PEN content. The acetone diffusion coefficient decreases 93% from PET to PET/85PEN, a copolymer in which 85 weight percent of the dimethyl terephthalate in PET has been replace by dimethyl naphthalate 2,6-dicarboxylate. The acetone solubility coefficient in the amorphous regions of the polymer decreases by approximately a factor of two over the same composition range. The glass/rubber transition temperatures of these materials rise monotonically with increasing PEN content. Copolymers containing 20 to 80 wt % PEN are amorphous. Samples with <20% or >80% PEN contain measurable levels of crystallinity. Estimated fractional free volume in the amorphous regions of these samples is lower in the copolymers than in either of the homopolymers. Relative free volume as probed by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) decreases systematically with increasing PEN content. Acetone diffusion coefficients correlate well with PALS results. Infrared spectroscopy suggests an increase in the fraction of ethylene glycol units in the trans conformation in the amorphous phase as the concentration of PEN in the copolymer increases. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Deposition of layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films has been a widely applied surface modification technique to improve the biocompatibility of biomaterials. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of the deposition of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) multilayer films on adhesion, growth and differentiation of osteoblasts-like MG63 cells. PAH and PAA were deposited sequentially onto tissue culture polystyrene at either pH 2.0 or pH 6.5 with 4-21 layers. While the MG63 cells attached poorly on the PAH/PAA multilayer films deposited at pH 2.0, while the cells adhered to the PEM films deposited at pH 6.5, depending on layer numbers. Cell adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic activities (alkaline phosphatase activity, expression of osteogenic marker genes and mineralization) were highest on the 4-layer PAH/PAA film and decreased with increasing layer numbers. On the other hand, the behavior of MG63 cells did not show any difference on the adjacent even and odd layers, except PEM4 and PEM5, i.e. the surface charges of the PAH/PAA multilayer films with over ten layers seem indifferent to osteoblastic functions. The results in this study suggested that the mechanical properties of PEM films may play a critical role in modulating the behavior of osteoblasts, providing guidance for application of PEM films to osteopaedic implants.  相似文献

We describe the synthesis of thermoresponsive polymers made from N-isopropylacrylamide and varying amounts of a thiol-containing co-monomer, N,N'-cystaminebisacrylamide (P(NIPAm-co-CBAm)). Infrared spectroscopy revealed a backbone similar to that seen with pure PNIPAm. UV-vis spectroscopy showed that P(NIPAm-co-CBAm) undergoes a thermoresponsive phase transition around 32 degrees C in aqueous solution. The presence of the thiol groups enabled the polymer to adsorb onto gold surfaces. Following adsorption onto a gold surface, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed a carbon/gold atomic ratio of 0.93 for a sample without CBAm and a ratio of 1.61 for a P(NIPAm-co-CBAm) sample with 0.20% CBAm. Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) analysis showed increases in the mass of polymer adsorbed when the CBAm content in the polymer increased. The thermoresponsive behavior of the thin films on gold was investigated with contact angle and dissipative QCM analysis. Contact angles were measured for polymer films at both 25 and 60 degrees C. The largest temperature-induced alteration in the contact angle was seen with the 1.00% CBAm sample. Similarly, QCM-D results showed a significantly greater change in frequency and dissipation following a temperature change when CBAm was present than in pure NIPAm polymers.  相似文献
