New reaction of benzo[b]thieno[3,2-b]benzo[b]thiophene disulfone

A new reaction of benzo[b]thieno[3,2-b]benzo[b]thiophene disulfone with amines that takes place with opening of one of the thiophene rings and nucleophilic substitution in the heteroaromatic ring at the site of cleavage of the S-C bond was observed. The molecular structures of the products of amination of the disulfone were determined by x-ray diffraction analysis. Hydrolysis and dehydration of the amination products gave derivatives of a new heterocyclic system, viz., benzo[b]-thieno[3,2-e]benzo[c]-1,2-oxathiin. The synthesis of benzo[b]phenanthro[d]thiophenes and anthra[b]benzo[d]thiophenes

The synthesis of benzo[b]phenanthro[2, 3-d]thiophene ( 5 ), benzo[b]phenanthro[4, 3-d]thiophene ( 6 ), benzo-[b]phenanthro[2, 1-d]thiophene ( 9 ), benzo[b]phenanthro[3, 2-d]thiophene ( 14a ), anthra[1, 2-b]benzo[d]thiophene ( 24 ), anthra[2, 3-b]benzo[d]thiophene ( 29 ) and anthra[2, 1-b]benzo[d]thiophene ( 30 ) is described as well as the preparation of 13-methylbenzo[b]phenanthro[3, 2-d]thiophene ( 14b ).     

Synthesis and cytotoxic activity of benzo[a]pyrano[3,2-h] and [2,3-i]xanthone analogues of psorospermine, acronycine, and benzo[a]acronycine

Condensation of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthalenecarboxylic acid with phloroglucinol afforded 9,11-dihydroxy-12H-benzo[a]xanthen-12-one (6). Construction of an additional dimethylpyran ring onto this skeleton, by alkylation with 3-chloro-3-methyl-1-butyne followed by Claisen rearrangement, gave access to 6-hydroxy-3,3-dimethyl-3H,7H-benzo[a]pyrano[3,2-h]xanthen-7-one (12) and 5-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H,6H-benzo[a]pyrano[2,3-i]xanthen-6-one (13), which were methylated into 6-methoxy-3,3-dimethyl-3H,7H-benzo[a]pyrano[3,2-h]xanthen-7-one (14) and 5-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2H,6H-benzo[a]pyrano[2,3-i]xanthen-6-one (15), respectively. Osmium tetroxide oxidation of 14 and 15 gave the corresponding (+/-)-cis-diols 16 and 17, which afforded the corresponding esters 18-21 upon acylation. Similarly, condensation of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthalenecarboxylic acid with 3,5-dimethoxyaniline gave 11-amino-9-methoxy-12H-benzo[a]xanthen-12-one (23) which was converted into 11-amino-9-hydroxy-12H-benzo[a]xanthen-12-one (24) upon treatment with hydrogen bromide in acetic acid. Alkylation with 3-chloro-3-methyl-1-butyne followed by Claisen rearrangement afforded 6-amino-3,3-dimethyl-3H,7H-benzo[a]pyrano[3,2-h]xanthen-7-one (25) and 5-amino-2,2-dimethyl-2H,6H-benzo[a]pyrano[2,3-i]xanthen-6-one (26). The new benzopyranoxanthone derivatives only displayed marginal antiproliferative activity when tested against L1210 and KB-3-1 cell lines. The only compounds found significantly active against L1210 cell line, 16 and 20, belong to the benzo[a]pyrano[3,2-h]xanthen-7-one series, which possess a pyran ring fused angularly onto the xanthone basic core.     

The preparation of the benzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]pyrazine and benzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]quinoxaline systems

Benzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]quinoxaIine 2 , benzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]pyrazine 3a and benzo[4,5]cyclohepta[1,2-b]quinoxaline 4 were prepared from 4,5-benzotropolone and 1,2-phenylenediamine, ethylenediamine and 1,2-diaminocyclohexane, respectively. Compound 3a was methylated to 3b .     

Toluene dioxygenase-catalyzed cis-dihydroxylation of benzo[b]thiophenes and benzo[b]furans: synthesis of benzo[b]thiophene 2,3-oxide

Enzymatic cis-dihydroxylation of benzo[b]thiophene, benzo[b]furan and several methyl substituted derivatives was found to occur in both the carbocyclic and heterocyclic rings. Relative and absolute configurations and enantiopurities of the resulting dihydrodiols were determined. Hydrogenation of the alkene bond in carbocyclic cis-dihydrodiols and ring-opening epimerization/reduction reactions of heterocyclic cis/trans-dihydrodiols were also studied. The relatively stable heterocyclic dihydrodiols of benzo[b]thiophene and benzo[b]furan showed a strong preference for the trans configuration in aqueous solutions. The 2,3-dihydrodiol metabolite of benzo[b]thiophene was utilized as a precursor in the chemoenzymatic synthesis of the unstable arene oxide, benzo[b]thiophene 2,3-oxide.     

A simple method for the determination of benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[k]fluoranthene in a mixture

Atmospheric particulate matter is routinely analysed for the concentration of the carcinogen benzo[a]pyrene (BaP). Benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF) has identical spectral characteristics and interferes in the fluorimetric estimation. A simple method for the determination of BaP in the presence of BkF is described. Based on quenching of the fluorescence of BaP by the addition of small amounts of nitromethane, the method can be used for accurate estimation for wide concentration ratios of BaP to BkF ranging from 0.1 to 10.0.

Cavity ring-down spectroscopy and vibronic activity of benzo[ghi]perylene

Gas-phase cavity ring-down spectroscopy of jet-cooled benzo[ghi]perylene (C22H12) in the 26 950-28 600-cm(-1) spectral range is reported for the first time. This study is part of our extensive laboratory astrophysics program for the study of interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The observed spectrum shows an intermediate level structure and significant broadening and is associated with the vibronically coupled S1(1A1)<--S0(1A1) and S2(1B1)<--S0(1A1) electronic transitions. Time-dependent density-functional calculations were performed to calculate the energetics, vibrational frequencies, and normal coordinates of the S1 and S2 states. A simple vibronic model was employed to account for the vibronic interaction between the vibronic levels of the S1 and S2 states. The calculated vibronic spectrum is found to be in good agreement with the experimental spectrum.     

Solid-phase synthesis of 2,3-disubstituted benzo[b]thiophenes and benzo[b]selenophenes

A concise and efficient solid-phase synthesis of benzo[b]thiophenes and benzo[b]selenophenes based on a combination of palladium-mediated coupling and iodocyclization protocols has been developed.     

Condensed pyridine bases synthesis of some benzo[b]furo[2,3-c]-, benzo[b]- thieno[2,3-c]-, and benzo[b]selenopheno[2,3-c]-quinolines

Summary Condensation of benzo[b]furan-3(2H-one, benzo[b]thiophen-3(2H)-one and benzo[b]selenophen-3(2H)-one with dimedone gives 2-(3-heteryl)dimedones. Acylation of the latter leads to the corresponding tetracyclic pyrylium salts, from which condensed quinolines are obtained. Some condensed quinoline derivatives are obtained by reaction of 1-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroheterene[2,3-c]quinolines with sodium borohydride, hydrazine, and hydroxylamine.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 3, pp. 321–326, March, 1994.     

Synthesis of benzo[1,2]phenaleno[bc]thiophenes

The synthesis of both isomers of benzo[1,2]phenaleno[bc]thiophene namely, benzo[1,2]phenaleno[3,4-bc]-thiophene and benzo[1,2]phenaleno[4,3-bc]thiophene is described.     

Synthesis of benzo[b]phenanthro[d]thiophenes

The synthesis of benzo[b]phenanthro[1,2-d]thiphene ( 1 ), benzo[b]phenanthro[4,3-d]thiophene ( 2 ), benzo-[b]phenanthro[2,1-d]thiophene ( 3 ) and benzo[b]phenanthro[3,4-d]thiophene ( 4 ) from appropriately substituted olefines by photochemical cyclodehydrogenation is described. The photolysis of olefin 9 gave a mixture of 4 and anthra[1,2-b]benzo[d]thiophene ( 5 ).     

1H NMR spectra of benzo[b]furan,benzo[b]thiophene and benzo[b]selenophene oriented in a lyotropic mesophase

The proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of benzo[b]-furan, -thiophene and -selenophene oriented in a potassium laurate lyotropic liquid crystal have been analyzed. Geometrical information has been obtained and compared to previous thermotropic results and various hypothetical models.     

K-region oxides and imines of benzo[b]phenanthro[2,3-d]thiophene and benzo[b]phenanthro[3,2-d]thiophene

The syntheses of the K-oxides and K-imine derivatives of benzo[b]phenanthro[2,3-d]thiophene and benzo-[b]phenanthro[3,2-d]thiophene are described. The parent hydrocarbons 1 and 2 were oxidized with osmium tetroxide and sodium metaperiodate, and the dialdehydes 12 and 18 so formed, cyclized to the corresponding epoxides 1a,12b-dihydrobenz[b]oxireno[9,10]phenanthro[2,3-d]thiophene ( 7 ) and 1a,12b-dihydrobenz-[b]oxireno[9,10]phenanthro[3,2-d]thiophene ( 13 ). Reaction of the oxiranes with sodium azide gave mixtures of azido-alcohols that, in turn, were transformed to the thiaarene imines 1a,12b-dihydro-1H-benz[b]azirino-[9,10]phenanthro[2,3-d]thiophene ( 8 ) and 1a,12b-dihydro-1H-benz[b]azirino[9,10]phenanthro[3,2-d]thiophene ( 14 ), respectively, with the aid of tri-n-butylphosphine.     

Synthesis and characterization of 9,9-dialkylfluorene capped benzo[c]thiophene/benzo[c]selenophene analogs as potential OLEDs

Effects of cluster formation on spectra of benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[e]pyrene

Absorption and fluorescence emission spectra of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and benzo[e]pyrene (BeP) in solution and adsorbed on silica have been obtained and compared to examine the spectroscopic effects of clustering. Molecular mechanics calculations with the UFF potential were done to optimize monomer, dimer and trimer geometries, and energy differences were determined by MP2/6-31G* calculations. Fluorescence emission spectra of adsorbed BeP and BaP display a red shift that progresses with increased loading, and the two differ in their photodegradation kinetics. The experimental and theoretical results are found to be consistent.     

Spirolactones of xanthene. III. Formation and molecular structure of novel spirolactones of xanthene and dibenzo[c,h]xanthene

The reaction of 1-naphthol or phenol derivatives with oxalic and sulfuric acids yielded novel spirolactones. Eight examples ( 2a-h ) were synthesized by this reaction. The structures of the spirolactones were established from spectral evidence and the X-ray diffraction studies. Some of the spirolactones form the solvates with the aromatic solvent molecules, such as toluene, xylene and nitrobenzene, and the structure of the nitrobenzene solvate of 2a was determined by the X-ray analysis.
