In this paper we prove some results related to the problem of isomorphically classifying the complemented subspaces ofX p.We characterize the complemented subspaces ofX pwhich are isomorphic toX pby showing that such a space must contain a canonical complemented subspace isomorphic toX p.We also give some characterizations of complemented subspaces ofX pisomorphic tol pl 2. Two closely related results are presented, one of them concerned with the connection between topological and measure-theoretic properties of compact spaces, the other being a non-separable analogue of a result of Peŀczyński's about Banach spaces containingL 1. Let τ be a regular cardinal satisfying the hypothesis that κω<τ whenever κ<τ. The following are proved: 1) A compact spaceT carries a Radon measure which is homogeneous of type τ, if and only if there exists a continuous surjection ofT onto [0, 1]τ. 2) A Banach spaceX has a subspace isomorphic tol 1(τ) if and only ifX has a subspace isomorphic toL 1({0, 1}τ). An example is given to show that a more recent result of Rosenthal's about Banach spaces containingl 1 does not have an obvious transfinite analogue. A second example (answering a question of Rosenthal's) shows that there is a Banach spaceX which contains no copy ofl 11), while the unit ball ofX is not weakly sequentially compact.  相似文献

We show that ifX is a Banach space and if there is a non-zero real-valuedC -smooth function onX with bounded support, then eitherX contains an isomorphic copy ofc 0(N), or there is an integerk greater than or equal to 1 such thatX is of exact cotype 2k and, in this case,X contains an isomorphic copy ofl 2k(N). We also show that ifX is a Banach space such that there is onX a non-zero real-valuedC 4-smooth function with bounded support and ifX is of cotypeq forq<4, thenX is isomorphic to a Hilbert space.  相似文献

We show that ifX is the closed linear span inL p [0,1] of a subsequence of the Haar system, thenX is isomorphic either tol p or toL p [0,1], [1<p<∞]. We give criteria to determine which of these cases holds; for a given subsequence, this is independent ofp. Suppose that 1<p≦2, 2≦q<∞. The formal identity operatorI:l pl qfactorizes through any given non-compact operator from ap-smooth Banach space into aq-convex Banach space. It follows that ifX is a 2-convex space andY is an infinite dimensional subspace ofX which is isomorphic to a Hilbert space, thenY contains an isomorphic copy ofl 2 which is complemented inX.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Israel J. Math.28 (1977), 313–324), it was shown that for a certain class of cardinals τ,l 1(τ) embeds in a Banach spaceX if and only ifL 1([0, 1]τ) embeds inX *. An extension (to a rather wider class of cardinals) of the basic lemma of that paper is here applied so as to yield an affirmative answer to a question posed by Rosenthal concerning dual ℒ1-spaces. It is shown that ifZ * is a dual Banach space, isomorphic to a complemented subspace of anL 1-space, and κ is the density character ofZ *, thenl 1(κ) embeds inZ *. A corollary of this result is that every injective bidual Banach space is isomorphic tol (κ) for some κ. The second part of this article is devoted to an example, constructed using the continuum hypothesis, of a compact spaceS which carries a homogeneous measure of type ω1, but which is such thatl 11) does not embed in ℰ(S). This shows that the main theorem of the already mentioned paper is not valid in the case τ = ω1. The dual space ℰ(S)* is isometric to , and is a member of a new isomorphism class of dualL 1-spaces.  相似文献

It is shown that ifX is an ℒ⫗ space with separable dual, thenX has a quotient isomorphic toC(ω)α if, and only if, there is anɛ >0, such that theɛ-Szlenk index ofX is at leastα. It was previously known, that ifX is a separable ℒ⫗ space with a non-separable dual, thenX has a quotient isomorphic toC[0, 1]. Research partially supported by NSF Grant MCS-74-07509-A03.  相似文献

We show that ifl p(X),p ≠ 2, is finitely crudely representable in an Orlicz spaceL ϕ (which does not containc 0) then the Banach spaceX is isomorphic to a subspace ofL p. The same remains true forp = 2 whenL ϕ is 2-concave or 2-convex, or ifX has local unconditional structure. We extend a theorem of Guerre and Levy to Orlicz function spaces.  相似文献

Let 2<p<∞. The Banach space spanned by a sequence of independent random variables inL p , each of mean zero, is shown to be isomorphic tol 2,l p ,l 2l p , or a new spaceX p , and the linear topological properties ofX p are investigated. It is proved thatX p is isomorphic to a complemented subspace ofL p and another uncomplemented subspace ofL p , whence there exists an uncomplemented subspace ofl p isomorphic tol p . It is also proved thatX p is not isomorphic to the previously known p spaces. The work for this research was partially supported by the National Science Foundation GP-12997.  相似文献

The author proves that ifC is a sufficiently large constant then every graph ofn vertices and [Cn 3/2] edges contains a hexagonX 1,X 2,X 3,X 4,X 5,X 6 and a seventh vertexY joined toX 1,X 3 andX 5. The problem is left open whether our graph contains the edges of a cube, (i.e. an eight vertexZ joined toX 2,X 4 andX 6).  相似文献

We construct a totally disconnected ω*, norming subsetF of the unit ballB * of an arbitrary separable Banach space,X, and an operator fromC(F) toC(B*) that “amost” commutes with the natural embeddings ofX. This is used to give a new proof of Milutin's theorem and to prove some new results on complemented subspaces ofC[0, 1] with separable dual. In particular we show that a complemented subspace ofCω), is either isomorphic toCω) or toc u.  相似文献

It is proved that ifX=c 0 orm and ifY andZ are subspaces ofX withX/Y andX/Z non-reflexive, then any isomorphism ofY ontoZ has an extension to an automorphism ofX. A dual result is obtained forX=l 1. This research was partially supported by NSF-GP-8964.  相似文献

We prove that ifT is a strictly singular one-to-one operator defined on an infinite dimensional Banach spaceX, then for every infinite dimensional subspaceY ofX there exists an infinite dimensional subspaceZ ofX such thatZ∩Y is infinite dimensional,Z contains orbits ofT of every finite length and the restriction ofT toZ is a compact operator. LetC denote the Banach space of scalar-valued continuous functions defined on the closed unit interval. It is proved that ifX is a Banach space andT:C→X is a bounded linear operator withT * X * non-separable, then there is a subspaceY ofC, isometric toC, such thatT|Y is an isomorphism. An immediate consequence of this and a result of A. Pelczynski, is that every complemented subspace ofC with non-separable dual is isomorphic (linearly homeomorphic) toC. On the complemented subspaces problem   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
A Banach space is isomorphic to a Hilbert space provided every closed subspace is complemented. A conditionally σ-complete Banach lattice is isomorphic to anL p -space (1≤p<∞) or toc 0(Γ) if every closed sublattice is complemented.  相似文献

Problems I and II, stated below, are considered. It is shown that the answer to I may be negative even ifX andZ are finite-dimensional and that the answer to II may be negative even ifX andZ are separable andT compact. Concerning problem II some positive results are also obtained. For example, the answer to II is in the affirmative ifX is a conjugate space or anL 1 space or ifX=c orc 0 andZ is separable. An ordered linear spaceL is said to satisfy extension property (E1) if for every directed subspaceM ofL and positive linear functional ϕ onM, ϕ can be extended toL. A Riesz spaceL is said to satisfy extension property (E2) if for every sub-Riesz spaceM ofL and every real valued Riesz homomorphism ϕ onM, ϕ can be extended toL as a Riesz homomorphism. These properties were introduced by Schmidt in [5]. In this paper, it is shown that an ordered linear space has extension property (E1) if and only if it is order isomorphic to a function spaceL′ defined on a setX′ such that iff andg belong toL′ there exists a finite disjoint subsetM of the set of functions onX′ such that each off andg is a linear combination of the points ofM. An analogous theorem is derived for Riesz spaces with extension property (E2).  相似文献

A tournamentX is a TRR for a groupG if (a)G acts regularly on the vertices ofX and (b) Aut(X) is isomorphic toG. We correct some previous work of Babai and Imrich by showing thatZ 2 3 andZ 3 3 are the only groups of odd order without TRR's. Our methods are perhaps of independent interest, since we use a probabilistic approach.  相似文献
