Let F be a field with ∣F∣ > 2 and Tn(F) be the set of all n × n upper triangular matrices, where n ? 2. Let k ? 2 be a given integer. A k-tuple of matrices A1, …, Ak ∈ Tn(F) is called rank reverse permutable if rank(A1 A2 ? Ak) = rank(Ak Ak−1 ? A1). We characterize the linear maps on Tn(F) that strongly preserve the set of rank reverse permutable matrix k-tuples.  相似文献

We investigate simultaneous solutions of the matrix Sylvester equations AiX-XBi=Ci,i=1,2,…,k, where {A1,…,Ak} and {B1,…,Bk} are k-tuples of commuting matrices of order m×m and p×p, respectively. We show that the matrix Sylvester equations have a unique solution X for every compatible k-tuple of m×p matrices {C1,…,Ck} if and only if the joint spectra σ(A1,…,Ak) and σ(B1,…,Bk) are disjoint. We discuss the connection between the simultaneous solutions of Sylvester equations and related questions about idempotent matrices separating disjoint subsets of the joint spectrum, spectral mapping for the differences of commuting k-tuples, and a characterization of the joint spectrum via simultaneous solutions of systems of linear equations.  相似文献

The spectra of some trees and bounds for the largest eigenvalue of any tree   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Let T be an unweighted tree of k levels such that in each level the vertices have equal degree. Let nkj+1 and dkj+1 be the number of vertices and the degree of them in the level j. We find the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix and Laplacian matrix of T for the case of two vertices in level 1 (nk = 2), including results concerning to their multiplicity. They are the eigenvalues of leading principal submatrices of nonnegative symmetric tridiagonal matrices of order k × k. The codiagonal entries for these matrices are , 2 ? j ? k, while the diagonal entries are 0, …, 0, ±1, in the case of the adjacency matrix, and d1d2, …, dk−1dk ± 1, in the case of the Laplacian matrix. Finally, we use these results to find improved upper bounds for the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix and of the Laplacian matrix of any given tree.  相似文献

A family F of square matrices of the same order is called a quasi-commuting family if (AB-BA)C=C(AB-BA) for all A,B,CF where A,B,C need not be distinct. Let fk(x1,x2,…,xp),(k=1,2,…,r), be polynomials in the indeterminates x1,x2,…,xp with coefficients in the complex field C, and let M1,M2,…,Mr be n×n matrices over C which are not necessarily distinct. Let and let δF(x1,x2,…,xp)=detF(x1,x2,…,xp). In this paper, we prove that, for n×n matrices A1,A2,…,Ap over C, if {A1,A2,…,Ap,M1,M2,…,Mr} is a quasi-commuting family, then F(A1,A2,…,Ap)=O implies that δF(A1,A2,…,Ap)=O.  相似文献

Let TRn×n be an irreducible stochastic matrix with stationary distribution vector π. Set A = I − T, and define the quantity , where Aj, j = 1, … , n, are the (n − 1) × (n − 1) principal submatrices of A obtained by deleting the jth row and column of A. Results of Cho and Meyer, and of Kirkland show that κ3 provides a sensitive measure of the conditioning of π under perturbation of T. Moreover, it is known that .In this paper, we investigate the class of irreducible stochastic matrices T of order n such that , for such matrices correspond to Markov chains with desirable conditioning properties. We identify some restrictions on the zero-nonzero patterns of such matrices, and construct several infinite classes of matrices for which κ3 is as small as possible.  相似文献

The paper studies the eigenvalue distribution of some special matrices. Tong in Theorem 1.2 of [Wen-ting Tong, On the distribution of eigenvalues of some matrices, Acta Math. Sinica (China), 20 (4) (1977) 273-275] gives conditions for an n × n matrix A ∈ SDn ∪ IDn to have |JR+(A)| eigenvalues with positive real part, and |JR-(A)| eigenvalues with negative real part. A counter-example is given in this paper to show that the conditions of the theorem are not true. A corrected condition is then proposed under which the conclusion of the theorem holds. Then the corrected condition is applied to establish some results about the eigenvalue distribution of the Schur complements of H-matrices with complex diagonal entries. Several conditions on the n × n matrix A and the subset α ⊆ N = {1, 2, … , n} are presented such that the Schur complement matrix A/α of the matrix A has eigenvalues with positive real part and eigenvalues with negative real part.  相似文献

It is known, for example, that the eigenvalues of the N×N matrix A, arising in the discretization of the wave equation, whose only nonzero entries are Akk+1=Ak+1k=-1,k=1,…,N-1, and Akk=2,k=1,…,N, are 2{1-cos[pπ/(N+1)]} with corresponding eigenvectors v(p) given by . We show by considering a simple finite difference approximation to the second derivative and using the summation formulae for sines and cosines that these and other similar formulae arise in a simple and unified way.  相似文献

Let A be a complex n×n matrix and let SO(n) be the group of real orthogonal matrices of determinant one. Define Δ(A)={det(A°Q):Q∈SO(n)}, where ° denotes the Hadamard product of matrices. For a permutation σ on {1,…,n}, define It is shown that if the equation zσ=det(A°Q) has in SO(n) only the obvious solutions (Q=(εiδσi,j),εi=±1 such that ε1εn=sgnσ), then the local shape of Δ(A) in a vicinity of zσ resembles a truncated cone whose opening angle equals , where σ1, σ2 differ from σ by transpositions. This lends further credibility to the well known de Oliveira Marcus Conjecture (OMC) concerning the determinant of the sum of normal n×n matrices. We deduce the mentioned fact from a general result concerning multivariate power series and also use some elementary algebraic topology.  相似文献

In a recent paper, Neumann and Sze considered for an n × n nonnegative matrix A, the minimization and maximization of ρ(A + S), the spectral radius of (A + S), as S ranges over all the doubly stochastic matrices. They showed that both extremal values are always attained at an n × n permutation matrix. As a permutation matrix is a particular case of a normal matrix whose spectral radius is 1, we consider here, for positive matrices A such that (A + N) is a nonnegative matrix, for all normal matrices N whose spectral radius is 1, the minimization and maximization problems of ρ(A + N) as N ranges over all such matrices. We show that the extremal values always occur at an n × n real unitary matrix. We compare our results with a less recent work of Han, Neumann, and Tastsomeros in which the maximum value of ρ(A + X) over all n × n real matrices X of Frobenius norm was sought.  相似文献

The period and base of a reducible sign pattern matrix   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Bolian Liu 《Discrete Mathematics》2007,307(23):3031-3039
A square sign pattern matrix A (whose entries are ) is said to be powerful if all the powers A,A2,A3,…, are unambiguously defined. For a powerful pattern A, if Al=Al+p with l and p minimal, then l is called the base of A and p is called the period of Li et al. [On the period and base of a sign pattern matrix, Linear Algebra Appl. 212/213 (1994) 101-120] characterized irreducible powerful sign pattern matrices. In this paper, we characterize reducible, powerful sign pattern matrices and give some new results on the period and base of a powerful sign pattern matrix.  相似文献

Let Mn be the space of all n × n complex matrices, and let Γn be the subset of Mn consisting of all n × n k-potent matrices. We denote by Ψn the set of all maps on Mn satisfying A − λB ∈ Γn if and only if ?(A) − λ?(B) ∈ Γn for every A,B ∈ Mn and λ ∈ C. It was shown that ? ∈ Ψn if and only if there exist an invertible matrix P ∈ Mn and c ∈ C with ck−1 = 1 such that either ?(A) = cPAP−1 for every A ∈ Mn, or ?(A) = cPATP−1 for every A ∈ Mn.  相似文献

Our starting point is the proof of the following property of a particular class of matrices. Let T={Ti,j} be a n×m non-negative matrix such that ∑jTi,j=1 for each i. Suppose that for every pair of indices (i,j), there exists an index l such that Ti,lTj,l. Then, there exists a real vector k=(k1,k2,…,km)T,kikj,ij;0<ki?1, such that, if ij.Then, we apply that property of matrices to probability theory. Let us consider an infinite sequence of linear functionals , corresponding to an infinite sequence of probability measures {μ(·)(i)}iN, on the Borel σ-algebra such that, . The property of matrices described above allows us to construct a real bounded one-to-one piecewise continuous and continuous from the left function f such that

Graphs with (kτ)-regular sets and equitable partitions are examples of graphs with regularity constraints. A (kτ)-regular set of a graph G is a subset of vertices S ⊆ V(G) inducing a k-regular subgraph and such that each vertex not in S has τ neighbors in S. The existence of such structures in a graph provides some information about the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of its adjacency matrix. For example, if a graph G has a (k1τ1)-regular set S1 and a (k2τ2)-regular set S2 such that k1 − τ1 = k2 − τ2 = λ, then λ is an eigenvalue of G with a certain eigenvector. Additionally, considering primitive strongly regular graphs, a necessary and sufficient condition for a particular subset of vertices to be (kτ)-regular is introduced. Another example comes from the existence of an equitable partition in a graph. If a graph G, has an equitable partition π then its line graph, L(G), also has an equitable partition, , induced by π, and the adjacency matrix of the quotient graph is obtained from the adjacency matrix of G/π.  相似文献

We consider matrices M with entries mij = m(λiλj) where λ1, … ,λn are positive numbers and m is a binary mean dominated by the geometric mean, and matrices W with entries wij = 1/m (λiλj) where m is a binary mean that dominates the geometric mean. We show that these matrices are infinitely divisible for several much-studied classes of means.  相似文献
