定向耦合器是构成各类光子器件的基础元件. 本文采用一种基于电场分量的全矢量有限元法, 分析由梯形截面硅基水平多槽纳米线构成的定向耦合器. 给出了准TE与准TM偶、奇模有效折射率、耦合长度及模场分布, 揭示了其模式的混合特性及模场分布特点. 分析结果表明, 准TE模与准TM模的耦合长度随波导间距的增大均呈指数增长, 其中准TE模的耦合长度对波导侧壁倾角的变化敏感, 而准TM模的耦合长度对槽厚及槽折射率的变化敏感. 恰当选择结构与材料参数, 可实现两偏振态下相同耦合长度, 定向耦合器在偏振无关条件下工作.  相似文献

A polarization-independent optical directional coupler based on slot waveguides is proposed and analyzed by using rigorous full-vectorial analysis methods based on a finite-element scheme. Properly choosing materials and structural parameters makes the coupling length for quasi-TE modes become equal to that for quasi-TM modes. Tolerances to operating wavelength and structural parameters are also discussed. The proposed coupler can be used for highly integrated optical circuits without polarization diversity schemes.  相似文献

Integrated waveguide turning mirrors (IWTM) based on total internal reflection are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The effects of the mirror surface displacement, the rotation, and the roughness are studied. The loss due to the various spectral components of the roughness is comprehensively analysed. A wide waveguide turning mirror is more influenced by the low-frequency component, which is the major component of the actually fabricated mirror surface, resulting in high radiation loss of an IWTM with long taper, contrary to expectation. The excess radiation loss is about 0.8 dB/mirror and 1.0 dB/mirror for quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes, respectively, in the optimum design, which could be reduced by further minimizing the displacement error of the mirror position. We also designed and fabricated a low-loss beam splitter with modal interference region, the measured excess losses being about 1.2 dB and 1.8 dB for quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes, respectively, which are believed to be the lowest in this kind of beam splitter.  相似文献

The waveguide propagation of a monochromatic electromagnetic wave in a multilayer smoothly-irregular integrated dielectric structure has been studied under natural physical and mathematical assumptions. Approximate solution of the vector electrodynamic problem satisfying the condition of smoothly varying shape of the structure is found using the Kantorovich method of the partial separation of variables, since the conventional method of separating variables, which is usually employed for regular waveguides, in the given case is inapplicable. Using the obtained solution, it is possible to describe analytically the fields of smoothly deforming modes of a dielectric waveguide, their interrelation, and the dispersion relations between the distribution of the phase slowing coefficient and the local inclination of layers in the structure under consideration. The proposed method can also be used, in a quite broad range of wavelengths, for an analysis of analogous waveguide structures made of both dielectric and magnetic materials.  相似文献

The characteristics of the directional couplers based on the horizontal multiple-slotted waveguides with slanted sidewalls are analyzed in detail by using a mode solver based on the full-vectorial finite element method with perfectly matched layers absorbing boundary conditions. The coupling length of the directional coupler as functions of the structural parameters including waveguide spacing, sidewalls angle, the thickness and refractive index of the slot regions, both in quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes, is obtained. The effective indexes and the field distributions of the even and odd modes also are presented. The numerical results show that polarization-independent directional couplers can be realized by properly choosing structural and material parameters.  相似文献

A finite element beam propagation method to analyze nonlinear active optical waveguides is presented. The model takes into account the mutual coupling among the equations describing the electromagnetic field propagation and the ones governing the signal amplification due to a doped medium. The approach is able to distinguish the different behavior of Ex (quasi-TE) and Ey (quasi-TM) polarizations. The performances of nonlinear and doped couplers are analyzed in detail by varying the input power, the field polarization and the pumping scheme.  相似文献

The propagation characteristics of metal clad planar optical waveguide as a function of wavelength are investigated theoretically for Al, Ag, and Au. The results obtained show that attenuation of the propagation modes in these guides is highly dependent on wavelength, which can be used to design an efficient integrated optical waveguide polarizer with high extinction ratios, or to select the wavelength for the surface plasmon based metal clad optical waveguide sensors. It is observed that Al is the only metal that still supports the surface plasmons in the UV region.  相似文献

We develop a vector theory of waveguide monochromatic light scattering in an integrated optical waveguide with arbitrary three-dimensional irregularities in the presence of noise. The electrodynamical problem of laser radiation scattering in an irregular waveguide is solved by the method of coupled modes with the help of the theory of perturbations. The approximate solution of the inhomogeneous three-dimensional wave equation is derived by the method of modes and the method of Greens functions. The obtained Greens function is analyzed for the cases of propagating and evanescent modes of an irregular asymmetric optical waveguide. Analytical formulas for the near- and far-zone radiation fields are presented. Based on a parabolically tapered multimode interference (MMI) coupler with a deep-etched SiO2/SiON rib waveguide, a compact wavelength demultiplexer operating at 1.30 and 1.55\mum wavelengths is proposed and analysed by using three-dimensional semi-vectorial finite-difference beam propagation method (3D-SV-FD-BPM). The results show that a MMI section of 330.0\mum in length, which is only 76% length of a straight MMI coupler, is achieved with the contrasts of 42.3 and 39.2dB in quasi-TE mode, and 38.4 and 37.8dB in quasi-TM mode at wavelengths 1.30 and 1.55\mum, respectively, and the insertion losses below 0.2dB at both wavelengths and in both polarization states. The alternating direction implicit algorithm with the Crank--Nicholson scheme is applied to the discretization of the 3D-SV-FD-BPM formulation along the longitudinal direction. Moreover, a modified FD scheme is constructed to approximate the resulting equations along the transverse directions, in which the discontinuities of the derivatives of magnetic field components Hy and Hx along the vertical and horizontal interfaces, respectively, are involved.  相似文献

The eigen and noneigen (leaky) modes of a three-layer planar integrated optical waveguide are described. The dispersion relation of a three-layer planar waveguide and other dependences are derived, and the cutoff conditions are analyzed. The diagram of propagation constants of the guided and radiation modes of an irregular asymmetric three-layer waveguide and the dependence of the electric field amplitudes of radiation modes of substrate on vertical coordinate in a tantalum integrated optical waveguide are presented. The operating principles of an absorption integrated optical waveguide sensor are investigated. The dependences of sensitivity of an integrated optical waveguide sensor on the sensory cell length, the coupling efficiency of the laser radiation into the waveguide, the absorption cross-section of the studied material, and the level of additive statistical noise are investigated. Some of the prospective areas of application of integrated-optical waveguide sensors are outlined.  相似文献

对于晶体光轴平行于波导界面的结构,讨论了光在金属包层对称平面单轴晶体波导(波导层是单轴晶体,两个波导界面均为金属)内的传输特性.解析地得到了这种结构下波导模式场的精确解.模式场的性质因单轴晶体的性质不同而异.对于正单轴晶体,波导的主模是横电波,任何频率的光波均可激励该模式;当频率满足一定条件时,波导内传输单模,否则,将激励起高阶模式.高阶模既非TE波,也非TM波,而是两者耦合而成的混合模.对于负单轴晶体,波导的主模是一种混合模,该模式同样可被任何频率的光波所激励;当频率满足一定条件时,波导内传输单模,否则 关键词: 平面金属波导 单轴晶体 模式场 混合模  相似文献

A bianisotropic waveguide can be defined as a cylindrical waveguide filled with bianisotropic materials, and all the conventional waveguides are special cases of the bianisotropic waveguide. In this paper, guided wave propagation in bianisotropic waveguide is analyzed by the theory of linear operators, and two types of adjoint waveguides and inner products are introduced respectively. Based on the concept of adjoint waveguides, the functional expressions of the field equations can be obtained, and from which the eigenvalue problem of the bianisotropic waveguide can be solved. Also, bi-orthogonality relations of guided modes are derived. These biorthogonality relations reported here can be used to expand electromagnetic fields in terms of a complete set of modes in straight bianisotropic waveguide. As an example of application, mode matching formulae for a discontinuity problem are given.  相似文献

The mapped Galerkin method in solving the full-vector and quasi-vector wave equations in terms of transverse magnetic fields (H-formulation) for optical waveguides with step-index profiles is described. By transforming the whole x-y space onto a unit square and using two-dimensional Fourier series expansion, the modal distributions and propagation constants for optical waveguides are obtained in the absence of boundary truncation. Results for step-index circular fiber, buried rectangular waveguide, and optical rib waveguide are presented. Solutions are good agreed with exact solutions and numerical results by using vector nonlinear iterative method, Fourier operator transform method, and vector beam propagation method.  相似文献

多模波导干涉(MMI)耦合器在集成光路中被用来实现波导模式的转换或合并。对于实际的基于硅绝缘体(SOI)的三维波导,数值设计方法是必需的。采用有限差分波束传输法(FD-BPM)设计了一种66%模式转换、合并器。首先由FD-BPM求出MMI耦合器的输入、输出波导所支持的基模和一阶导模的模场分布,通过数值方法得到MMI耦合器的长度,然后将求得的模场作为输入波场,经过FD-BPM运算后在器件输出面上计算交叉积分得出实际的由基模转换为一阶模的功率百分比。对于算例中采用的SOI波导,器件长度为829μm,65.7%的功率由基模转换为一阶模。  相似文献

A full-vectorial (FV) analysis of optical dielectric waveguide bends by using finite difference (FD) method in terms of magnetic field components is developed in a local cylindrical coordinate system. The perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary conditions via the complex coordinate stretching technique are incorporated into the FV wave equations for effectively demonstrating the leaky nature of waveguide bends, and a six-point FD scheme is constructed to approximate the cross-coupling terms for improving the convergent behavior. The leaky modes of a typical rib waveguide bend are calculated and the complex propagation constants and the field patterns for TE- and TM-like modes are obtained. Solutions are good agreement with those from the film mode matching method, which shows the validity and utility of the established method.  相似文献

A compact wavelength demultiplexer is designed for the operation at 1.30 and 1.55 μm wavelengths using the three-dimensional semi-vectorial beam propagation method. Optically controlled two-way optical switches are useful for high-speed photonic switches and rapidly reconfigurable optical interconnection networks. A directional coupler forms such a switch because the field can be switched from one waveguide to the other by altering the optical length of the waveguide. Nonlinear materials are incorporated in the waveguide so that the optical path length may be altered by using an optical control beam to vary the intensity of light. A finite element method is described that enables the modelling of the non-linear dual waveguide structure for arbitrary waveguide shapes. Spurious modes are avoided in the transverse magnetic field method and non-linearity is handled by iteration and assuming an equivalent non-linear relative permittivity.  相似文献

波导耦合器是组成光纤传感系统和光纤通信系统光收发组件及模块的重要元器件,是实现光收发模块一体化光电集成的基础。给出了一种用光纤陀螺系统的X型四端口波导耦合器的工作原理,采用有效折射率法和BPM(Beam propagation method)法建立了耦合器的数学模型,计算并分析了耦合器尺寸在尽可能小的情况下和在满足单模传输的条件下耦合器的耦合系数、有效耦合长度、分光比以及回波损耗等参数之间的关系,并对其关键技术进行了系统的研究。仿真结果表明,所设计的波导耦合器在低损耗情况下分光比可达到50%∶50%,耦合器全长为33.5mm,输入输出波导间距为410μm,芯层截面积为6μm×6μm。  相似文献

在椭圆柱坐标系中,采用分离变量方法,得出了左手介质椭圆光波导本征方程的近似解,通过数值计算,分析了椭圆波导偏心率、左手介质的电容率、磁导率对椭圆光波导基模传播特性的影响,并将左介质光波导与右手介质光波导基模特性进行对比,得出左手介质光波导的基模特性与右手介质光波导基模特性差别不大的结论.  相似文献

In short waveguides used in integrated optical circuits, the radiation field is often present in the guiding region of a waveguide as well as the guided modes. We show that this can be investigated efficiently by extracting the radiation part from the total input field and simulating its evolution along the waveguide by use of the beam propagation method. The results are presented for a single-mode waveguide and a waveguide junction excited by a Gaussian beam. For a noncentred excitation, a considerable fraction of the radiation power is still in the guiding region after propagation over several tens of micrometres, and can be coupled to guided modes past the junction.  相似文献
