We report on previously unobserved intersystem degeneracies in two-component equal-mass Fermi gases with interspecies zero-range interactions under isotropic harmonic confinement. Over the past 10 years, two-component Fermi gases consisting of n_{1} spin-up and n_{2} spin-down atoms with interspecies zero-range interactions have become a paradigm for modeling condensed matter systems, nuclear matter, and neutron matter. We show that the eigenenergies of the (n_{1}+1,n_{2}-1) system are degenerate with the eigenenergies of the (n_{1},n_{2}) system for any s-wave scattering length a_{s}, including infinitely large, positive, and negative a_{s}. The existence of the intersystem degeneracies is demonstrated explicitly for few-body systems with n_{1}+n_{2}=4, 5, and 6. The degeneracies and associated symmetries are explained within a group theoretical framework.  相似文献

We consider a superfluid of trapped fermionic atoms and study the single vortex solution in the Ginzburg-Landau regime. We define simple analytical estimates for the main characteristics of the system, such as the vortex core size, temperature regimes for the existence of a vortex, and the effects of rotation and interactions with normal fermions. The parameter dependence of the vortex core size (healing length) is found to be essentially different from that of the healing length in metallic superconductors or in trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensation in the Thomas-Fermi limit. This is an indication of the importance of the confining geometry for the properties of fermionic superfluids.  相似文献

We examine the contribution of pairing fluctuations to the superfluid order parameter for harmonically trapped atomic Fermi gases in the BCS regime. In the limit of small systems we consider, both analytically and numerically, their space and temperature dependence. We predict a parity effect, i.e., that pairing fluctuations show a maximum or a minimum at the center of the trap, depending on the value of the last occupied shell being even or odd. We propose to detect pairing fluctuations by measuring the density-density correlation function after a ballistic expansion of the gas.  相似文献

We consider a trapped unbalanced Fermi gas at nonzero temperatures where the superfluid Sarma phase is stable. We determine, in particular, the phase boundaries between the superfluid, normal, and phase-separated regions of the trapped unbalanced Fermi mixture. We show that the physics of the Sarma phase is sufficient to understand the recent observations of Zwierlein et al. [Science 311, 492 (2006); Nature (London) 442, 54 (2006)] and indicate how the apparent contradictions between this experiment and the experiment of Partridge et al. [Science 311, 503 (2006)] may be resolved.  相似文献

We study density profiles in trapped fermionic gases, near Feshbach resonances, at all T< or =Tc and in the near Bose-Einstein condensation and unitary regimes. For the latter, we characterize and quantify the generally neglected contribution from noncondensed Cooper pairs. As a consequence of these pairs, our profiles are rather well fit to a Thomas-Fermi (TF) functional form, and equally well fit to experimental data. Our work lends support to the notion that TF fits can be used in an experimental context to obtain information about the temperature.  相似文献

We show that the density profile of a Fermi gas in rapidly rotating potential will develop prominent features reflecting the underlying Landau-level-like energy spectrum. Depending on the aspect ratio of the trap, these features can be a sequence of ellipsoidal volumes or a sequence of quantized steps.  相似文献

We calculate the equation of state of a Fermi gas with resonant interactions when the effective range is appreciable. Using an effective field theory for a large scattering length and large effective range, we show how calculations in this regime become tractable. Our results are model independent, and as an application, we study the neutron matter equation of state at low densities of astrophysical interest 0.002 fm(-3) < rho < 0.02 fm(-3), for which the interparticle separation is comparable to the effective range. We compare our simple results with those of conventional many-body calculations.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of slow light propagating in a degenerate atomic Fermi gas. In particular we use slow light with an orbital angular momentum. We present a microscopic theory for the interplay between light and matter and show how the slow light can provide an effective magnetic field acting on the electrically neutral fermions, a direct analogy of the free electron gas in an uniform magnetic field. As an example we illustrate how the corresponding de Haas-van Alphen effect can be seen in a gas of neutral atomic fermions.  相似文献

We apply the configuration-interaction method to calculate the spectra of two-component Fermi systems in a harmonic trap, studying the convergence of energies at the unitary interaction limit. We find that for a fixed regularization of the two-body interaction the convergence is exponential or better in the truncation parameter of the many-body space. However, the conventional regularization is found to have poor convergence in the regularization parameter, with an error that scales as a low negative power of this parameter. We propose a new regularization of the two-body interaction that produces exponential convergence for systems of three and four particles. We estimate the ground-state energy of the four-particle system to be (5.045 +/- 0.003) variant Planck's constant over 2 pi omega.  相似文献

We study the effects of surface tension between normal and superfluid regions of a trapped Fermi gas at unitarity. We find that surface tension causes notable distortions in the shape of large aspect ratio clouds. Including these distortions in our theories resolves many of the apparent discrepancies among different experiments and between theory and experiments.  相似文献

We demonstrate the operation of an atom interferometer based on a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate. We strongly reduce the interaction induced decoherence that usually limits interferometers based on trapped condensates by tuning the s-wave scattering length almost to zero via a magnetic Feshbach resonance. We employ a 39K condensate trapped in an optical lattice, where Bloch oscillations are forced by gravity. The fine-tuning of the scattering length down to 0.1 a_(0) and the micrometric sizes of the atomic sample make our system a very promising candidate for measuring forces with high spatial resolution. Our technique can be in principle extended to other measurement schemes opening new possibilities in the field of trapped atom interferometry.  相似文献

We consider a trapped atomic system in the presence of spatially varying laser fields. The laser-atom interaction generates a pseudospin degree of freedom (referred to simply as spin) and leads to an effective spin-orbit coupling for the fermions in the trap. Reflections of the fermions from the trap boundaries provide a physical mechanism for effective momentum relaxation and nontrivial spin dynamics due to the emergent spin-orbit coupling. We explicitly consider evolution of an initially spin-polarized Fermi gas in a two-dimensional harmonic trap and derive nonequilibrium behavior of the spin polarization. It shows periodic echoes with a frequency equal to the harmonic trapping frequency. Perturbations, such as an asymmetry of the trap, lead to the suppression of the spin echo amplitudes. We discuss a possible experimental setup to observe spin dynamics and provide numerical estimates of relevant parameters.  相似文献

We show that two new intraspecies P-wave superfluid phases appear in two-component asymmetric Fermi systems with short-range S-wave interactions. In the BEC limit, phonons of the molecular BEC induce P-wave superfluidity in the excess fermions. In the BCS limit, density fluctuations induce P-wave superfluidity in both the majority and the minority species. These phases may be realized in experiments with spin-polarized Fermi gases.  相似文献

The compensation of quadratic Zeeman effect and trap energy in high-spin fermions is shown to lead to resonances in the spin-changing collisions that are typically absent in spinor condensates and spin-1/2 fermions. We study these resonances in lattice fermions, showing that they permit the targeting of a particular spin-changing channel while suppressing the rest and the creation of magnetically insensitive superpositions of many-body states with entangled spin and trap degrees of freedom. Finally, the intersite tunneling may lead to a quantum phase transition described by a quantum Ising model.  相似文献

We solve the problem of a Bose or Fermi gas in d-dimensions trapped by δ ⩽ d mutually perpendicular harmonic oscillator potentials. From the grand potential we derive their thermodynamic functions (internal energy, specific heat, etc.) as well as a generalized density of states. The Bose gas exhibits Bose-Einstein condensation at a nonzero critical temperature T c if and only if d + δ > 2, along with a jump in the specific heat at T c if and only if d + δ > 4. Specific heats for both gas types precisely coincide as functions of temperature when d + δ = 2. The trapped system behaves like an ideal free quantum gas in d + δ dimensions. For δ = 0 we recover all known thermodynamic properties of ideal quantum gases in d dimensions, while in 3D for δ = 1, 2 and 3 one simulates behavior reminiscent of quantum wells, wires anddots, respectively. Good agreement is found between experimental critical temperatures for the trapped boson gases 37 87Rb, 3 7Li, 37 85Rb, 2 4He, 19 41K and the known theoretical expression which is a special case for d = δ = 3, but only moderate agreement for 11 27Na and 1 1H. We present up to 24-photon Bragg diffraction as a beam splitter in light-pulse atom interferometers to achieve the largest splitting in momentum space so far. Relative to the 2-photon processes used in the most sensitive present interferometers, these large momentum transfer beam splitters increase the phase shift 12-fold for Mach-Zehnder (MZ) and 144-fold for Ramsey-Bordé (RB) geometries. We achieve a high visibility of the interference fringes (up to 52% for MZ or 36% for RB) and long pulse separation times that are possible only in atomic fountain setups. As the atom's internal state is not changed, important systematic effects can cancel.  相似文献

We study rf spectroscopy of ultracold Fermi gas by going beyond the linear response in the field-matter interaction. Higher order perturbation theory allows virtual processes and energy conservation beyond the single-particle level. We formulate an effective higher order theory, which agrees quantitatively with experiments on the pairing gap and is consistent with the absence of the mean-field shift in the spin-flip experiment.  相似文献

A trapped-atom interferometer was demonstrated using gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates coherently split by deforming an optical single-well potential into a double-well potential. The relative phase between the two condensates was determined from the spatial phase of the matter wave interference pattern formed upon releasing the condensates from the separated potential wells. Coherent phase evolution was observed for condensates held separated by 13 microm for up to 5 ms and was controlled by applying ac Stark shift potentials to either of the two separated condensates.  相似文献

Using arguments based on sum rules, we derive a general result for the average shifts of rf lines in Fermi gases in terms of interatomic interaction strengths and two-particle correlation functions. We show that near an interaction resonance shifts vary inversely with the atomic scattering length, rather than linearly as in dilute gases, thus accounting for the experimental observation that clock shifts remain finite at Feshbach resonances.  相似文献
