The need for the preconcentration of trace and ultratrace amounts of uranium(VI) and thorium(IV) in conjunction with various detection techniques was clearly brought out in the introductory part. Subsequently, various off-line and on-line procedures developed for uranium(VI) and thorium(IV) prior to their analytical determination since 1990 were critically reviewed in terms of enrichment factor, retention/sorption capacity, validation using certified reference materials and application to complex real samples. The relative merits and demerits of various preconcentration and/or separation of uranium(VI) and thorium(IV) prior to quantitation by a plethora of analytical techniques are discussed in concluding part of the review article.  相似文献

The triphosphate-crosslinked magnetic chitosan resins (TPP-MCR) with a diameter range of 200–350 nm were synthesized for the adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption experiments were conducted in both mono-component systems with pure actinide solution and bi-component systems with different U/Th mass ratios. The maximum adsorption capacities in mono-component systems determined by Langmuir model were 169.5 and 146.8 mg g?1 for U(VI) and Th(IV), respectively. In bi-component systems, U(VI) and Th(IV) adsorption capacities were reduced significantly, and the combined sorption capacities were substantially lower (almost halved) compared to those obtained by the addition of sorption capacities using mono-component solutions, indicating that U(VI) and Th(IV) compete for the same sorption sites. Adsorption–desorption experiments for five cycles illustrated the feasibility of the repeated use of TPP-MCR for the adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) ions.  相似文献

Adsorption behavior of uranyl and thorium ions from synthetic radioactive solutions onto functionalized silica as sorbent has been investigated. The effect of contact time, initial concentration of radioactive solutions, sorbent mass, pH value and temperature on the adsorption capacity of the sorbent was investigated. Negative values of Gibbs free energy of adsorption suggested the spontaneity of the adsorption process on both functionalized silica with –NH2 groups and with –SH groups. Positive values obtained for ΔH° indicates that the adsorption is an endothermic process. The adsorption isotherms were better fitted by Freundlich model and the adsorption kinetic was well described by the pseudo-second order equation. Desorption studies indicated that the most favorable desorptive reagents for UO2 2+ is HNO3 1 M and for Th4+ is EDTA 1 M solutions.  相似文献

A new chelating polymeric sorbent is developed using Merrifield chloromethylated resin anchored with calix[4]arene-o-vanillinsemicarbazone for simultaneous separation and solid phase extractive preconcentration of U(VI) and Th(IV). The “upper-rim” functionalized calix[4]arene-o-vanillinsemicarbazone was covalently linked to Merrifield resin and characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis. The synthesized chelating polymeric sorbent shows superior binding affinity towards U(VI) and Th(IV) under selective pH conditions. Various physico-chemical parameters that influence the quantitative extraction of metal ions were optimized. The optimum pH range and flow rates for U(VI) and Th(IV) were 6.0-7.0 and 1.0-4.0 ml min−1 and 3.5-4.5 and 1.5-4.0 ml min−1, respectively. The total sorption capacity found for U(VI) and Th(IV) was 48734 and 41175 μg g−1, respectively. Interference studies carried out in the presence of diverse ions and electrolyte species showed quantitative analyte recovery (98-98.5%) with lower limits of detection, 6.14 and 4.29 μg l−1 and high preconcentration factors, 143 and 153 for U(VI) and Th(IV), respectively. The uptake and stripping of these metal ions on the resin were fast, indicating a better accessibility of the metal ions towards the chelating sites. The analytical applicability of the synthesized polymeric sorbent was tested with some synthetic mixtures for the separation of U(VI) and Th(IV) from each other and also from La(III), Cu(II) and Pb(II) by varying the pH and sequential acidic elution. The validity of the proposed method was checked by analyzing these metal ions in natural water samples, monazite sand and standard geological materials.  相似文献

The kinetics of solvent extraction of U (IV), Th (IV) and U (VI) from nitric acid solution with tributyl phosphate (TBP) in kerosene and cyclohexane have been studied using the single drop technique. The effects of concentrations of U (IV), Th (IV), U (VI), nitric acid, nitrate, TBP and temperature on the extraction rates of U (IV), Th (IV) and U (VI) have been examined. The mechanisms for the three extraction processes are discussed.  相似文献

The retention profile of uranium (VI) as uranyl ions (UO(2)(2+)) from the aqueous media onto the solid sorbent date pits has been investigated. The sorption of UO(2)(2+) ions onto the date pits was achieved quantitatively (98+/-3.4%, n=5) after 15 min of shaking at pH 6-7. The sorption of UO(2)(2+) onto the used sorbent was found fast, followed by a first order rate equation with an overall rate constant, k of 4.8+/-0.05 s(-1). The sorption data were explained in a manner consistent with a "solvent extraction" mechanism. The sorption data were also subjected to Freundlich isotherm model over a wide range of equilibrium concentration (1-20 microgmL(-1)) of UO(2)(2+). The results revealed that, a "dual-mode" of sorption mechanism involving absorption related to "solvent extraction" and an added component for "surface adsorption" is most likely operated simultaneously for uranyl ions uptaking the solid sorbent. The thermodynamic parameters (-DeltaH, DeltaS and DeltaG) of the uranyl ions uptake onto the date pits indicated that, the process is endothermic and proceeds spontaneously. The interference of some diverse ions on the sorption UO(2)(2+) from the aqueous media onto the date pits packed column was critically investigated and the data revealed quantitative collection of UO(2)(2+) at 5 mLmin(-1) flow rate. The retained UO(2)(2+) was recovered quantitatively with HCl (3.0 molL(-1)) from the column at 5 mLmin(-1) flow rate. The mode of binding of the date pits with UO(2)(2+) was determined from the IR spectral date bits before and after extraction of uranium (VI). The height equivalent (HETP) and the number (N) of theoretical plates of the date pits packed column were determined from the chromatograms. Complete retention and recovery of UO(2)(2+) spiked to wastewater samples by the date pits packed column was successfully achieved. The capacity of the used sorbent towards retention of uranium (VI) from aqueous solutions was much better than the most common sorbents.  相似文献

Graphene oxide (GO) is one of the most important carbon nano-materials. In this paper, GO was synthesized from flake graphite and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The sorption of Th(IV) on GO was investigated as a function of contact time, solid-to-liquid ratio, pH, ionic strength, and in the presence of fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) by batch experiments. The sorption percentage of Th(IV) on GO decreased with increasing ionic strength and decreasing solid-to-liquid ratio. The sorption edge of Th(IV) in the presence of FA/HA is much lower than that in the absence of FA/HA. Furthermore, the sorption processes of Th(IV) can be described by a pseudo-second order rate model. Based on the Langmuir model, the maximum sorption capacities (Csmax) of Th(IV) were about 5.80 × 10?4 mol/L. From thermodynamic investigation, sorption of Th(IV) on GO is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The rapid sorption rate and high sorption capacity suggest that GO is a promising adsorbent for Th(IV).  相似文献

Extraction of uranium(VI), thorium(IV) from nitric acid has been studied with N-octylcaprolactam and N-(2-ethyl)hexylcaprolactam. Distribution coefficients of U(VI), Th(IV) and HNO3 as a function of aqueous NHO3 concentration, extractant concentration and temperature have been studied. The compositions of extracted species, thermodynamic parameters of extraction have been evaluated. Third phase formation in extraction of U(VI) has been studied. Back extraction behavior of U(VI) and Th(IV) from the organic phase has also been tested. The results obtained are compared with those obtained by using TBP under the same experimental conditions.  相似文献

Clay minerals occur widely in nature and play a very important role in agriculture, mineral recovery and chemical manufacturing. Among the many properties which affect clay behaviour, water binding and ion exchanging appear to be the most important. The study of the cation exchange capacity of soils is of great theoretical and practical importance since the CEC determines in many ways the behavior of nutrients, chemical amendments, and many toxic compounds entering the sols. Sorption interactions with montmorillonite and other clay minerals in soils are potantially important mechanisms for attenuating the mobility of heavy metal cations through the subsurface environment. In this work the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of montmorillonite from west Anatolia, and sorptions with montmorillonite for attenuating the mobility of uranium were studied. The CEC value was found to be 77 meq/100 g montmorillonite. The relative importance of test parameters e.g., contact time, particle size, pH and U(+6) aqueous speciation was determined. The results show that sorption on montmorillonite is a funtion of pH depending strongly on the aqueous U(+6) species. It reaches a maximum at near neutral pH(pH}7). At low and at high pH solutions the sorption values of uranium are poor. These sorption values were attributed to the formation of aqueous U(+6) carbonate complexes in alkaline conditions and the ionexchange process between UO2 +2 species and interlayer cations on montmorillonite in acidic solutions.  相似文献

In developing a method for possible low level isotopic enrichment, which uses to advantage the equilibrium isotope effect observed during U(1V)-U(VI) electron exchange reaction in sulphate solutions, details of a solvent extraction process involving high concentration of a mixture of U(IV) and U(VI) and at low acid concentrations, are described. The extraction behaviour of uranium under these conditions is discussed. During the extraction with amines, U(IV) tended to get oxidised in sulphate solutions.  相似文献

Triphenylarsine oxide is proposed as an extractant for the solvent extraction of uranium and thorium salicylates. The optimum extraction conditions are established by studying the various parameters such as pH, sodium salicylate concentration, triphenylarsine oxide concentration, diluents and shaking time. The probable extracted species as ascertained by logD-logC plots are UO2(Hsal)2·2TPAsO and Th(Hsal)4·2TPAsO. The method is simple, fast, precise and permits the determination of uranium and thorium in monazite sand samples.  相似文献

Adsorption isotherms of U(VI) and Th(IV) in water were obtained and removal kinetics was studied. The main functional groups on the surface of Salvadora Persica branches adsorbent were identified using a Fourier-transform infrared and the surface morphology of adsorbent was characterized by a Scanning Electron Microscope. Effects of the U(VI) and Th(IV) initial concentrations, contact time, the mass of adsorbent loading, pH of the solution were investigated at 25?±?0.3 °C. The efficiencies with which this adsorbent removes U(VI) and Th(IV) from their solutions in water are reported. The adsorption isotherm fitted the Freundlich model. The adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) follows the pseudo-second order kinetic with squared correlation coefficients (R2) close to 1.0. The thermodynamic parameters (i.e. the free energy (\(\Delta G_{\text{ads}}^{o}\)), the enthalpy (\(\Delta H_{\text{ads}}^{o}\)) and the entropy of adsorption (\(\Delta S_{\text{ads}}^{o}\)) for the adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) on the Salvadora Persica branches adsorbent were reported.

The adsorption of uranium (VI) from aqueous solutions onto natural sepiolite has been studied using a batch adsorber. The parameters that affect the uranium (VI) sorption, such as contact time, solution pH, initial uranium(VI) concentration, and temperature, have been investigated and optimized conditions determined. Equilibrium isotherm studies were used to evaluate the maximum sorption capacity of sepiolite and experimental results showed this to be 34.61 mg · g?1. The experimental results were correlated reasonably well by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the isotherm parameters (Qo and b) were calculated. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔH° = ?126.64 kJ · mol?1, ΔS° = ?353.84 J · mol?1 · K?1, ΔG° = ?21.14 kJ · mol?1) showed the exothermic heat of adsorption and the feasibility of the process. The results suggested that sepiolite was suitable as sorbent material for recovery and adsorption of uranium (VI) ions from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Graphene oxide nanosheets have attracted multidisciplinary attention due to their unique physicochemical properties. Herein, few-layered graphene oxide nanosheets were synthesized from graphite using a modified Hummers method and were characterized by TEM, AFM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, FTIR spectroscopy, TG-DTA and acid-base titrations. The prepared few-layered graphene oxide nanosheets were used as adsorbents for the preconcentration of U(VI) ions from large volumes of aqueous solutions as a function of pH, ionic strength and temperature. The sorption of U(VI) ions on the graphene oxide nanosheets was strongly dependent on pH and independent of the ionic strength, indicating that the sorption was mainly dominated by inner-sphere surface complexation rather than by outer-sphere surface complexation or ion exchange. The abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on the surfaces of the graphene oxide nanosheets played an important role in U(VI) sorption. The sorption of U(VI) on graphene oxide nanosheets increased with an increase in temperature and the thermodynamic parameters calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms suggested that the sorption of U(vi) on graphene oxide nanosheets was an endothermic and spontaneous process. The maximum sorption capacities (Q(max)) of U(VI) at pH 5.0 ± 0.1 and T = 20 °C was 97.5 mg g(-1), which was much higher than any of the currently reported nanomaterials. The graphene oxide nanosheets may be suitable materials for the removal and preconcentration of U(VI) ions from large volumes of aqueous solutions, for example, U(VI) polluted wastewater, if they can be synthesized in a cost-effective manner on a large scale in the future.  相似文献

N,N,N',N',N',N'-Hexaethyl-2,2′,2'-(nitrilotrisethyleneoxy-2-benzyloxy)tris(acetamide) (L3) has been prepared and characterized by using IR, 1H NMR and positive-ion FAB mass spectra. The extraction of Th4+ and UO2 2+ with N,N,N',N',N',N'-hexaethyl-2,2',2'- (nitrilo-trisethyleneoxy)tris(acetamide) (L1), N,N,N',N',N',N'-hexaisopropyl-2,2',2'-(nitrilotrisethyleneoxy)tris(acetamide) (L2), and L3 was studied at 20±1 °C as a function of diluent, concentration of free extractant in organic phase and concentration of picrate in aqueous phase. It was found that the extracting powers of L1 and L2 for Th4+ are almost identical. The extracting power of L2 for UO22+ was slightly higher than that of L1. The difference in terminal groups (ethyl or isopropyl) of the extractants (L1 and L2) with same backbone has a little effect on the extracting power for both Th4+ and UO22+. The extracting powers of L3 for both Th4+ and UO22+ were larger than those of L1 and L2. The extractants (L1 and L3) having the same terminal group (ethyl) with different backbones have obviously different extracting powers for Th4+ or UO22+. The extracting powers of all three extractants L1, L2, and L3 for Th4+ were larger than those for UO22+. The compositions of extracted species in organic phase were predominantly ThL(Pic)3NO3 and UO2L(Pic)NO3, respectively (L denotes L1, L2 and L3). This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The adsorption of the uranyl ions from aqueous solutions on the nanoporous ZnO powders has been investigated under different experimental conditions. The adsorption of uranyl on nanoporous ZnO powders were examined as a function of the contact times, pH of the solution, concentration of uranium(VI) and temperature. The ability of this material to remove U(VI) from aqueous solution was followed by a series of Langmuir and Freunlinch adsorption isotherms. The adsorption percent and distribution coefficient for nanoporous ZnO powders were 98.65 % ± 1.05 and 7,304 mL g?1, respectively. The optimum conditions were found as at pH 5.0, contact time 1 h, at 1/5 Zn2+/urea ratio, 50 ppm U(VI) concentration and 303 K. The monomolecular adsorption capacity of nanoporous ZnO powders for U(VI) was found to be 1,111 mg g?1 at 303 K. Using the thermodynamic equilibrium constants obtained at different temperatures, various thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS°, have been calculated. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔH° = 28.1 kJ mol ?1, ΔS° = 160.30 J mol?1 K?1, ΔG° = ?48.54 kJ mol?1) showed the endothermic and spontaneous of the process. The results suggested that nanoporous ZnO powders was suitable as sorbent material for recovery and adsorption of U(VI) ions from aqueous solutions.  相似文献
