The city of Kocaeli is in the western part of Anatolia in Turkey and has a population of approximately 1.000.000. There is no information about radioactivity in the Kocaeli soils samples so far. For this reason, the concentrations of the natural radionuclides in soil samples from 27 different sampling stations in Kocaeli Basin and its surroundings have been determined. The results have been compared with other radioactivity measurements in different country"s soils. The typical concentrations of 137Cs, 238U, 40K, 226Ra, 232Th found in surface soil samples ranged from 2±0.6 to 25±6 Bq/kg, from 11±4 to 49±10 Bq/kg, from 161±30 to 964±127 Bq/kg, from 10±4 to 58±11 Bq/kg, and from 11±3 to 65±13 Bq/kg, respectively.  相似文献

The main component of most building materials in Malaysia is rock. All rocks are known to contain natural radionuclides such as 238U and 232Th series as well as 40K. In order to estimate the radiological impact to the dweller, the level of radionuclides present in various building materials available in Malaysia were analyzed using γ-spectrometry. The radiation hazard indexes were calculated based on the above results. The results showed that the activity concentration of natural radionculides 238U, 232Th, 40K was between 19.0–42.2 Bq/kg, 16.5–28.8 Bq/kg and 243.3–614.2 Bq/kg, respectively. On the whole, the radionuclides concentration was still below the global average of 50 Bq/kg, 50 Bq/kg and 500 Bq/kg for 238U, 232Th, and 40K, respectively The radiation hazard indexes of the building materials were also lower than the maximum value suggested.  相似文献

Thorium activity concentrations were measured in seven marine sediment cores taken from Sabah-Sarawak coast on 2004 by using a gravity box corer. Collected sediments were generally homogenous mud which contained much more mixture of silt and clay compared to sand and relatively low content of organic carbon (i.e. less than 5% at all sampling stations). The results found that activity concentrations of 230Th, 232Th and ratios of 230Th/232Th were ranged from 6.5–20.4 Bq/kg dry wt., 6.8–27.8 Bq/kg dry wt. and 0.69–0.92, respectively. It seem that, 232Th activity concentrations are slightly higher than 230Th at all sampling stations and both radionuclides were generally high at Sabah compared to Sarawak coastal waters. 230Th activity concentrations in sediment core appear to be correlated with the activity concentrations of 232Th at some sampling station. These indicating both radionuclides were supplied from the same of environment and source origin of detrital from terrestrial and shallower water. The low 230Th/232Th activity ratio which is less than unity suggesting that 232Th was actively and rapidly regenerated compared to 230Th from 234U. It also can be attributed to less efficiently scavenge of 230Th onto particles prior deposited at the marine sediment bed.  相似文献

The study aims to evaluate the activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs along Rosetta beach, Egypt. Non-destructive assay techniques were carried out using HP-Ge spectrometer and binocular microscope. The results of this study serve as a database for radioactivity levels of the mineral sand deposits of Rosetta area. The activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th and 40K ranged from 5.39 to 134.2, 6.6 to 160.8 and 57.6 to 492 Bqkg−1 respectively. The range of activity concentrations of 137Cs is between 0.05 and 0.91 Bqkg−1. The total gamma absorbed dose rates varied from 11.59 to 160.01 nGyh−1 with a mean value of 50.53 nGyh−1. These values correspond to an annual effective dose equivalent of 0.01–0.2 mSvy−1 with a mean of 0.07 mSvy−1, which is in agreement with the worldwide average. Also, a correlation between the calculated zircon and monazite radioactive mineral contents with the measured radioactive isotopes was carried out to determine the contribution of each mineral for radioactivity. These correlations predicted that both zircon and monazite minerals are the main contributors for radioactivity in the Egyptian beach black sands. Also the present study ensured that area under investigation is to be safe for public.  相似文献

Activity concentration and mineralogical characterization in the intertidal sand samples of Tamilnadu coast, India have been analyzed. From the gamma spectral analysis, the average value of 238U, 232Th and 40K in the intertidal sand samples are 12 ± 4, 59 ± 4 and 197 ± 26 Bq kg−1 respectively. The average value of 232Th alone is slightly higher than the world average value. From XRD and FTIR analysis, monazite, zircon, ilmenite, magnetite, hematite, quartz, witherite, calcite, nacrite, microcline feldspar, orthoclase feldspar, gibbsite and organic carbon are identified. Of these minerals, monazite and microcline feldspar are the most associated with the presence of 232Th and 40K respectively.

This preliminary study presents the experimental results concerning the concentrations of selected radionuclides (238U, 232K, 226Ra, 232Th) in Af?in-Elbistan, Çan, Çay?rhan, Erzurum, Göynük, Kangal, Orhaneli, Saray, Seyitömer, Soma, Tunçbilek, Yata?an and Yeniköy lignites, which are primarily utilized as fuel for thermal power plants in Turkey. Gamma-spectrometry of 39 representative lignite samples gave results with the following concentration ranges: 8 to 296 Bq/kg for 238U, 3 to 79 Bq/kg for 232Th, 17 to 360 Bq/kg for 40K, and 5 to 130 Bq/kg for 226Ra. The 238U results reported here are higher than other literature values for various world coals, earth's crust and world average.  相似文献

Samples of natural and manufactures building materials collected around Lusaka have been analyzed for natural radionuclides using -spectrometry. A simple comparison of the specific radioactivities of primordial radionuclides in these materials to the world averages for soil (25 Bq kg–1 238U, 25 Bg kg–1 232Th, 370 Bq kg–1 40K and 89 Bq kg–1 Raeq) shows that, of the nine types of samples analyzed, only burnt clay bricks (for238U,232Th and40K), cement roofing tiles (for238U), building and river sands (for232Th and40K) have greater activities than does soil. Radiological evaluation of specific radioactivities in these materials indicates that all materials meet the external -ray dose limitation of 1.5 mSv y–1, that is, all samples have a radium equivalent activity of less than 370 Bq kg–1.  相似文献

Samples belonging to two species of lichen and one of moss collected on the Antarctic seashore (King George Island, Deception, Antarctic Peninsula) were analysed for gamma-emitters using HPGe gamma-spectrometry, and for alpha-emitters using alpha-spectrometry with silicon detectors. Observed 137Cs activities show large variations: from 4.1±0.4 to 74±3 Bq/kg. Total activity of 210Pb changed from <2 to 125±35 Bq/kg. The 2391240Pu activity ranged from 0.07±0.02 to 2.95±0.16 Bq/kg. The activity of 238Pu ranged from <0.02 to 0.64±0.04 Bq/kg. Maximum 238U and 234U activity was 7 Bq/kg, respectively, and 0.3 Bq/kg for 235U, whereas minimum activities were below 0.5 Bq/kg for 234U and 238U and about 0.02 Bq/kg for 235U. The 235U to 238U activity ratio for most of the samples was natural. Thorium activities were about two times lower than those for uranium. The activities of 147Sm ranged from 0.014±0.002 to 1.0±0.2 Bq/kg. One sample had relatively high activity of 241Am: 3.38±0.11 Bq/kg, another did not exceeded 1 Bq/kg. Observed activity ratios confirmed differences between mosses and lichen accumulation properties for radionuclides. Lichens are more selective for plutonium accumulation. Some radiocesium and probably also americium can be leached from them.  相似文献

The concentrations of 238U and 232Th of the constituent minerals in two plutonic rock samples, from N. Greece, exhibiting elevated levels of bulk rock natural radioactivity were determined by using LA-ICP-MS. The available data of whole rock 238U and 232Th concentrations were also used. The minerals were separated using a combination of heavy liquids of various densities, shaking table and magnetic separation techniques. The great variation in the concentrations of 238U and 232Th is probably indicative of the different distribution of U and Th within the same rock, as well as to secondary post-magmatic processes that were responsible for the redistribution of U and Th. An estimation of the contribution of each mineral constituent to the natural radioactivity levels of the bulk rock is attempted. Thorite and zircon contribute the most to the whole rock 238U and 232Th content, while the contribution of apatite is moderate. The contribution of the rest of the minerals examined (fluorite, quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, amphibole, pyroxene, magnetite and biotite) is not important.  相似文献

Surface sediment samples were collected at the West (east coast and west coast of Peninsular Malaysia) and East (Sabah and Sarawak) Malaysia in several expeditions within August 2003 until June 2008 for determining the level of natural radium isotopes. Activity concentrations of 226Ra and 228Ra in surface marine sediment at 176 sampling stations were measured. The activity concentrations of both radionuclides in Malaysia (East and West Malaysia) display varied with the range from 9 to 158 Bq/kg dry wt. and 13 to 104 Bq/kg dry wt., respectively. Meanwhile, the ratio distributions of 228Ra/226Ra were ranged from 0.62 to 3.75. This indicated that the ratios were slightly high at west coast of Peninsular Malaysia compared to other regions (east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak). The variation of activity concentrations of 226Ra and 228Ra and its ratios were also supported by the statistical analyses of one-way ANOVA and t test at 95 % confidence level, whereby there were proved that the measured values were different between the regions. These different were strictly related to their half-life, potential input sources (included their parents, 238U and 232Th), parent’s characteristic, the geological setting/formation of the study area, environment origin and behavior.  相似文献

The concentration levels of 238U, 232 Th, 40K and 137Cs in top soils of State of Punjab located in the North Western part of India were measured using conventional low background gamma ray spectrometric setup as well as Compton suppressed gamma ray spectrometric setup. The radioactivity level of 238U and 232Th was found to vary between 15 Bq/kg and 27 Bq/kg and between 16 Bq/kg and 57 Bq/kg respectively. The radioactivity level of 40K was found to vary between 266 Bq/kg and 799 Bq/kg. The mean radioactivity level of the NORM in general was found to be similar to what is expected as a result of their normal abundance.  相似文献

In this work we calculated the radioactivity concentrations of the natural radioactive nuclides 238U, 232Th, 226Ra and 40K for 10 commercial samples collected from 10 different companies which are used in the construction of Yemeni buildings. Gamma ray spectroscopy was used to analyze the samples and the concentrations of radioisotopes were determined using a hyper-pure germanium (HPGe) detector in Bq/kg dry-weight. The average concentrations of 238U, 232Th, 226Ra and 40K were found to be 131.4, 83.55, 131.88 and 400.7 Bq/kg respectively. Different hazard indices were also determined. The results showed that the average radium equivalent activity (Raeq), the absorbed dose rate (Dr), the annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE), the external hazard index (Hex) and representation level index (Iγ) were: 307.52 Bq/kg, 139.31 nGy/h, 1.40 mSv/yr, 0.83 and 2.15 respectively. The mean value of (Raeq) obtained in this study is in good agreement with that of the international value while the mean values of the other indices are found to be higher than the international reference values. The measured activity concentrations for these radionuclide were compared with the reported data obtained from similar materials used in other countries.  相似文献

People are exposed to ionizing radiation from the radionuclides that are present in different types of a natural sources, of which building materials is one of the most important sources. Radionuclides in building materials belonging to 238U, 232Th series as well as radioisotope of Potassium 40K are the major contributors of outdoor terrestrial natural radiation. This study is the first ever in Iraq. In order to estimate the radiological impact to the dweller, the activity concentration of radionuclides present in various Iraqi building materials were analyzed using Gamma-spectrometry. The radiation hazard indexes were calculated based on the above results. The results showed that the activity concentration of 238U, 232Th and 40K was between 32.9 Bq/kg (Najaf gypsum)–179.32 Bq/kg (Karbala cement), 1.98 Bq/kg (Najaf sand)–17.43 Bq/kg (Qadisiya brick) and 108.73 Bq/kg (Karbala sand)–977.79 Bq/kg (Najaf brick), respectively. All values of Radium equivalent activities were found to be less than the maximum permissible limit and the internal hazard indexes (except Karbala cement) were less than unity for the radiation hazard. Some samples have external annual dose and external hazard index values greater than unity.  相似文献

The radioactivity levels of Istanbul environs lignites were determined. The gamma-spectrometric technique has been used for the determination of activity levels of naturally occurring radionuclides 235+238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra and fallout radionuclides 137Cs in lignites taken from 7 different parts of Istanbul. Concentration of 238U, 228+232Th, 40K, 226Ra 137Cs and 235U were found up to 1.6 ppm, 1.7 ppm, 4.9 ppm, 56.8 Bq/kg, 34 Bq/kg, 1.8 Bq/kg, 1.6 Bq/kg, respectively. In addition total alpha- and beta-activity levels in lignite samples were found to be 7.6 and 15 eps, respectively.  相似文献

This study is part of an effort to assess the level of background radiation for Erzincan Province of eastern Turkey. Radionuclide activity concentrations in soil samples were measured through gamma-ray spectrometry and the average activities were determined as 8.93, 11.39, 281.94, and 9.52 Bq/kg for the radionuclides 238U, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs, respectively. The average annual effective dose from these natural radioactivity sources (238U series, 232Th series and 40K,) was calculated to be 27.9 μSv. Radioactivity levels in drinking and potable water samples were studied using a multi-channel low level proportional counter. The average gross alpha activity concentration was found to be 0.0477 Bq/L (min. 0.007 Bq/L; max. 0.421 Bq/L) and the average gross beta activity was measured as 0.104 Bq/L (min. 0.008 Bq/L; max. 1.806 Bq/L). These values lead to an average annual effective dose of 9.75 μSv from the alpha emitters and 56.34 μSv from the beta emitting radionuclides in water. The radioactivity levels in the water samples investigated were found to comply with the reference levels recommended by WHO and the regulations set forth by the Turkish Health Ministry.  相似文献

The concentrations of natural radionuclides in the sediments of Ogun river in South Western Nigeria have been measured and determined using gamma-ray spectrometry. The mean activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th at different locations along the course of the river were found to vary from 370.99±19.26 Bq/kg (at Olopade) to 608.02±24.66 Bq/kg (at Owere), 5.57±2.34 (at Ekerin) to 20.40±4.52 Bq/kg (at Sokori) and 5.04±2.24 Bq/kg (at mile 12-Maidan) to 23.10±4.81 Bq/kg (at Sokori) respectively. The overall calculated mean of the total indoor absorbed dose rates was 64.46±9.16 nGy/h with corresponding annual indoor effective dose of 0.32±0.05 mSv/y. Radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex), internal hazard index (Hin) and representative gamma index (Iγr) were calculated in order to assess the radiation hazards associated with the use of these sediments in the construction of dwellings. The overall estimated values for the radium equivalent activity, external hazard index, internal hazard index and the representative gamma index were 67.96±10.74 Bq/kg, 0.18±0.03, 0.22±0.05 and 0.54±0.08, respectively. These values obtained for the river sediments were less than the recommended safe and criterion limits by UNSCEAR and also, they compared well with the values from other countries of normal radiation areas. It suffices to say therefore that sediments from Ogun river are safe and can be used for construction of buildings without undue radiological health concerns. Results of the study could serve as an important baseline radiometric data for future epidemiological studies and monitoring initiatives in the study area.  相似文献

In this study, radioactivity levels of 228 lake water samples, 63 upper and depth sediment samples and 12 fish samples from Lake Van were investigated from 2005 to 2008 and the distribution patterns of the radionuclides were presented. Analysis included gross alpha–beta and total radium isotopes activities and uranium concentrations of the water, and gross alpha and gross beta activities and relevant 238U, 232Th and 40K activity of the sediment and fish samples of the lake. Mean gross alpha, gross beta and radium isotopes activities of lake water were found 0.74 ± 0.46, 0.02 ± 0.01 and 0.06 ± 0.04 Bq/L, respectively. Mean gross alpha and beta activities in upper and depth sediments were found to be 41 ± 6 and 1,514 ± 74 Bq/kg; 77 ± 5 and 394 ± 24 Bq/kg at a 95 % confidence level, respectively. Mean activities of 238U, 232Th and 40K activity concentrations in upper and depth sediments were determined to be 225 ± 22, 70 ± 7 and 486 ± 39 Bq/kg; 174 ± 4, 63 ± 3 and 263 ± 25 Bq/kg, respectively. The mean gross alpha and beta, 238U, 232Th and 40K aktivities in fish samples were established as 47 ± 18, 470 ± 12, 0.57 ± 0.220, 0.022 ± 0.006, 319 ± 11 Bq/kg, respectively. The transfer factor from lake water to fish tissues, annual intake by humans consuming fish, and annual committed effective doses were estimated and evaluated.  相似文献

A series of leaching experiments with water and gradually harsher acid solutions have been carried out on a monazite.228Th/232Th,230Th/232Th, and234U/238U activity ratios in the acid fractions show a common variation pattern: high — low — close to bulk values, which can be explained in terms of preferential solution effect of recoil atoms. Compared with228Th, the preferential solution effect of234U is suppressed due to self-annealing of recoil tracks.  相似文献

Mineral sands are mined in several countries to supply to the titanium and zircon producing industries. Coastal black mineral sands usually contain, besides ilmenite (FeTiO3) and rutile (TiO2), radioactive minerals such as zircon (ZrSiO4) and monazite (RePO4). Radon and thoron activity concentration originated from natural radioactive contents of the black mineral sand was monitored at the extraction and processing for black minerals in the coastal areas of Ha Tinh Province, one of the around 40 coastal mineral sand deposits in Vietnam. The survey was carried out with the Raduet chambers made by Radosys Ltd—Hungary. The obtained results for 25 investigated points show that the measured values are not high in the residential houses and in case of the sand extraction site as well. At the titanium processing plant the measured values were higher than outside the facility (Radon: 18–55 Bq/m3 with average of 34 Bq/3 and Thoron 33–118 Bq/m3 with average of 58 Bq/m3) but still comparable to the average concentration of the world published by UNSCEAR. The typical outdoor levels of radon and thoron gas are each of the order of 10 Bq/m3. Although the radon concentrations were low in the zircon and titanium processing plants, the thoron concentrations in the houses for separating rutile and zircon were very high. At zircon processing factory, the thoron concentration could reach 2,931 Bq/m3 and the estimated annual effective dose would be 21.4 mSv/a. Intervention has to be taken in order to reduce the thoron level in this factory since the level of thoron and its progenies corresponding to an annual occupational effective dose is beyond the action level of 6 mSv/a.  相似文献

The natural radioactivity in phosphate fertilizers used in central Italy has been measured by alpha and gamma spectrometry. The results show that the specific activities of 238U, 234U and 235U ranged within interval from < 0.5 to 2628.8, from < 0.5 to 2826.3 and from < 0.9 to 138.0 Bq kg− 1 respectively and those of 210Pb and 210Po ranged within interval from < 15.0 to 401.5 and < 0.5 to 351.6 Bq kg− 1 respectively. The 228Th, 230Th and 232Th concentrations found by alpha spectrometry ranged from < 0.5 to 50.2, from 0.9 to 2727.2 and from < 0.5 to 60.8 Bq kg− 1 respectively. 226Ra and 228Ra activity concentrations ranged from < 14.3 to 290.9 and from < 2.9 to 24.9 respectively. 40K specific activities ranged from 39.2 to 8263.7 Bq kg− 1. A very good correlation exists between the activity concentrations found by alpha spectrometry and those found by gamma spectrometry.  相似文献
