A study has been made of the adsorption, interaction, and spreading of mixtures of anionic and cationic surfactants at the aqueous solution/polyethylene (PE) interface. When a drop of an aqueous solution of an anionic or cationic hydrocarbon-chain surfactant is placed on a highly hydrophobic PE film (contact angle of water > 90 degrees ), it spreads to an area very little larger than that of a drop of water of the same volume. If the anionic and cationic hydrocarbon-chain surfactant solutions are mixed prior to being applied to PE film, synergism is small, if any, and the reproducibility of the experimental results is poor. However, when the cationic and anionic aqueous solutions are applied on the PE film in a sequential manner, a remarkable synergism in spreading is observed and the results are very reproducible. The area spread by an aqueous solution of the anionic-cationic mixture may be more than 400 times that of aqueous solutions of the same volume and surfactant concentration of the individual surfactant components. Previous work in this laboratory on surfactant systems showing synergism in spreading on PE film, but only weak interaction at the aqueous solution/air interface, showed that the synergy was due to changes at the aqueous solution/PE interface and not to the changes at the aqueous solution/air or PE/air interface. Investigation of the adsorption behavior at the aqueous solution/solid interface of two of the anionic-cationic mixtures studied here indicates the reason for differences in spreading behavior observed with different anionic-cationic mixtures. The more similar the adsorption tendencies at the solid/aqueous solution interface of the anionic and cationic surfactants, and the closer their adsorption to an equimolar monolayer there, the stronger their interaction there and the greater their enhancement of the spreading. A mechanism is proposed for the synergy in spreading observed, based upon the difference between the surface tension in the precursor film at the spreading interface and that at the top of the spreading drop.

The equilibrium adsorption layers of symmetric chain alkyltrimethylammonium alkyl sulfates (Cn+.Cn- for n = 8, 12) were investigated at the air/water interface by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy in the function of the bulk surfactant concentration. To ensure the surface purity of the solutions investigated, an improved version of the foam fractionation method was used for the purification of the constituent ionic surfactants and the surface purity of the solutions was also checked. In the monolayer of the C12+.C12- surfactant, a two-dimensional first-order gas/liquid phase transition was observed. At surfactant bulk concentrations just exceeding the concentration corresponding to the phase transition, the monolayer is conformationally disordered, liquidlike, but with increasing bulk surfactant concentration the conformational order of the monolayer increases. The SFG spectra of the C8+.C8- monolayer did not indicate the occurrence of phase transition at room temperature.

In this article, foaming properties and dynamic interfacial properties of a series of sodium 2,5-dialkyl benzene sulfonates in aqueous solutions were carried out to elucidate the relationship between foaming properties and dynamic interfacial properties. The properties of foams generated from bubbling air through different surfactant solutions were measured using a modified Bikerman device. The dynamic surface tension and surface dilational elasticity were obtained from an image analysis technique based on the oscillating bubble method. The surfactants molecular adsorption at the air/water interface was introduced with Rosen empirical equation and the rate of adsorption was determined from measurements of the dynamic surface tension. The surfactant with the longest alkyl chain shows the lowest dynamic surface activity, which lead to the lowest foam volume. The short ortho straight alkyl chain has little effect on the arrangement of molecules at the interface and the foam stability changes a little with the changing of the ortho alkyl chain length. The foam stability is correlated with both the higher surface dilational elasticity and the larger surface monolayer strength.

Surfactants can be used to increase the solubility of poorly soluble drugs in water and to increase drug bioavailability. In this article, the aqueous solubilization of the nonsteroidal, antiinflammatory drug ibuprofen is studied experimentally and theoretically in micellar solutions of anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), cationic (dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, DTAB), and nonionic (dodecyl octa(ethylene oxide), C12E8) surfactants possessing the same hydrocarbon "tail" length but differing in their hydrophilic headgroups. We find that, for these three surfactants, the aqueous solubility of ibuprofen increases linearly with increasing surfactant concentration. In particular, we observed a 16-fold increase in the solubility of ibuprofen relative to that in the aqueous buffer upon the addition of 80 mM DTAB and 80 mM C12E8 but only a 5.5-fold solubility increase upon the addition of 80 mM SDS. The highest value of the molar solubilization capacity (chi) was obtained for DTAB (chi = 0.97), followed by C12E8 (chi = 0.72) and finally by SDS (chi = 0.23). A recently developed computer simulation/molecular-thermodynamic modeling approach was extended to predict theoretically the solubilization behavior of the three ibuprofen/surfactant mixtures considered. In this modeling approach, molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations were used to identify which portions of ibuprofen are exposed to water (hydrated) in a micellar environment by simulating a single ibuprofen molecule at an oil/water interface (modeling the micelle core/water interface). On the basis of this input, molecular-thermodynamic modeling was then implemented to predict (i) the micellar composition as a function of surfactant concentration, (ii) the aqueous solubility of ibuprofen as a function of surfactant concentration, and (iii) the molar solubilization capacity (chi). Our theoretical results on the solubility of ibuprofen in aqueous SDS and C12E8 surfactant solutions are in good agreement with the experimental data. The ibuprofen solubility in aqueous DTAB solutions was somewhat overpredicted because of challenges associated with accurately modeling the strong electrostatic interactions between the anionic ibuprofen and the cationic DTAB. Our results indicate that computer simulations of ibuprofen at a flat oil/water interface can be used to obtain accurate information about the hydrated and the unhydrated portions of ibuprofen in a micellar environment. This information can then be used as input to a molecular-thermodynamic model of self-assembly to successfully predict the aqueous solubilization behavior of ibuprofen in the three surfactant systems studied.

The foam stability of dodecyl diphenyl ether disulfonate solution with liquid paraffin droplets in the presence and absence of electrolytes was evaluated, and the stabilization mechanisms were deduced. The foam film is stabilized when the monovalent and divalent counterion concentration is lower than a critical value. However, the foam stability declined with the addition of trivalent counterions. There are two mechanisms we have speculated. Firstly, the counterions reduce the repulsive interaction between the polar groups of surfactants adsorbed at the air/water and oil/water interfaces in the pseudo-emulsion film. Secondly, comparing with the monovalent counterions, the multivalent counterions are not only able to interconnect head groups of adjacent ionic surfactant molecules which are adsorbed at the air/water or oil/water interface, but also to attract the couples of neighboring surfactant head groups adsorbed at the air/water and oil/water interfaces. The attractive interaction between both the interfaces promotes the emulsified droplets piercing the air/water interface.

Dependences of the surface tension of aqueous solutions of cationic (dodecylpyridinium bromide) and nonionic (Tween 80, Triton X-100) surfactants and their mixtures on total surfactant concentration and solution composition were studied. The values of critical micellization concentration (CMC) and excess free energy of adsorption were determined from tensiometric measurements. Based on Rubingh–Rosen model (approximation of the theory of regular solutions), the compositions of micelles and adsorption layers at the solution–air interface as well as parameters of interaction between the molecules of cationic and nonionic surfactants were calculated for the systems indicated above. It was established that, in the case of surfactant mixtures with considerable difference in the CMCs, the micelles of individual surfactant with lower CMC value are formed. The effect of negative deviation from the ideality during the adsorption of surfactants from mixed solutions at the solution–air interface was disclosed. It was shown that the interaction energy depends significantly on the composition of mixed systems.

The interaction of iron III salts and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) has been studied at the air/water and silica/water interfaces. The surface tension of cetylpyridinium chloride has been determined in aqueous solutions in the presence of iron III chloride and iron III nitrate at two constant pH values, namely, 3.5 and 1.2. It is shown that the surface tension of the cationic surfactant depends upon the ionic strength of the solution through the pH adjustment in the presence of the former salt but not in the presence of the latter. The effect of iron III nitrate on the surface tension of CPC is similar to that of potassium nitrate, indicating that the iron III various-hydrolyzed species do not interfere with the composition of the air/water interface. The competitive adsorption of iron III nitrate salt and the cationic surfactant at a silica/water interface was next investigated. The adsorption isotherms were determined at pH 3.5. It is shown that although the iron III ions, which were added to the silica dispersion in the presence of the cetylpyridinium ions, were strongly bound to the anionic surface sites, the surfactant ions are not salted out in the solution but remain in close vicinity of the silica surface. Conversely as the cationic surfactant is added first to the silica dispersion in the presence of the adsorbed iron III ions, the metal ions and the surfactant ions are both coadsorbed onto the silica surface. It is suggested that iron III hydrolyzed or free cations and the cationic surfactant molecules may not compete for the same adsorption sites onto the silica surface.

Drops impacting on horizontal aqueous surfactant films have been analyzed using a high-speed camera. Drops of either water or aqueous surfactant solutions had a diameter of 2.4?±?0.4 mm and impacted with a velocity of 0.1 to 1.3 m/s. As surfactants, anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate and cationic cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide were used. Pure water drops impacting on freestanding surfactant films showed coalescence, bouncing, partial bouncing, passing, and partial passing. For bouncing, the concentration of surfactant in the surfactant film must exceed the critical micelle concentration. When surfactant was added to the drop, coalescence and partial passing were suppressed. We attribute the different behavior to different hydrodynamic boundary conditions at the surface of pure water and surfactant solution, leading to different repulsive hydrodynamic forces arising when the air has to flow out of the closing gap between the two liquid surfaces. The boundary condition changes as a function of surfactant concentration from a slip to no-slip, leading to stronger hydrodynamic repulsion. In addition, estimates of the characteristic velocities show that diffusion of air into the water is slow and can only account for the very last thinning of the air gap before coalescence.

The dynamic surface tension (DST) and the surface viscoelastic modulus of sodium oleate aqueous solutions at different concentrations were measured using an image analysis tensiometer based on the oscillating bubble technique. The diffusion coefficient of oleate moieties was calculated from DST measurements and the surface viscoelastic modulus using the Langmuir-Szyszkowski and the diffusion-controlled adsorption models. The viscoelastic moduli obtained from model calculations were compared with the corresponding experimental values. The diffusion coefficient of C(12)(EO)(6) in water and the parameters of the Langmuir-Szyszkowski adsorption isotherm were taken from the literature and used to calculate the surface viscoelastic modulus of its aqueous solutions at different concentrations. The foaming properties of both C(12)(EO)(6) and sodium oleate solutions, viz., the foam conductance and the water volume fraction in the foam, were measured using a commercial Foamscan device. Foaming experiments with C(12)(EO)(6) and sodium oleate solutions were carried out either under static conditions; i.e., the foam conductance and the water volume fraction were measured as a function of time after the generation of a fixed volume of foam, or under dynamic conditions; i.e., the foam conductance and the water volume fraction were measured during foam formation. The variations in the foam permeability as a function of surfactant concentration were related to the viscoelastic properties of the air/water interface and to the presence of micelles in the foam films. With foams in which the water volume fraction was higher than 0.05, the foam electrical conduction could be described using a simple parallel resistor model and their conductance measurements were related to the foam water volume fraction. The results related to water drainage under static conditions were used to interpret water drainage under dynamic conditions. Preliminary conjectures on the influence of foam permeability and water volume fraction on the yield of the flotation deinking process were drawn from these results.

Dynamic interfacial tensiometry, gauged by axisymmetric drop shape analysis of static drops or bubbles, provides useful information on surfactant adsorption kinetics. However, the traditional pendant-drop methodology is not readily amenable to the study of desorption kinetics. Thus, the question of sorption reversibility is difficult to assess by this technique. We extend classical pendant/sessile drop dynamic tensiometry by immersing a sessile bubble in a continuously mixed optical cell. Ideal-mixed conditions are established by stirring and by constant flow through the cell. Aqueous surface-active-agent solutions are either supplied to the cell (loading) or removed from the cell by flushing with water (washout), thereby allowing study of both adsorption and desorption kinetics. Well-mixed conditions and elimination of any mass transfer resistance permit direct identification of sorption kinetic barriers to and from the external aqueous phase with time constants longer than the optical-cell residence time. The monodisperse nonionic surfactant ethoxy dodecyl alcohol (C(12)E(5)), along with cationic cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) in the presence of added salt, adsorbs and desorbs instantaneously at the air/water interface. In these cases, the experimentally observed dynamic-tension curves follow the local-equilibrium model precisely for both loading and washout. Accordingly, these surfactants below their critical micelle concentrations (CMC) exhibit no detectable sorption-activation barriers on time scales of order a min. However, the sorption dynamics of dilute CTAB in the absence of electrolyte is markedly different from that in the presence of KBr. Here CTAB desorption occurs at local equilibrium, but the adsorption rate is kinetically limited, most likely due to an electrostatic barrier arising as the charged surfactant accumulates at the interface. The commercial, polydisperse nonionic surfactant ethoxy nonylphenol (NP9) loads in good agreement with local-equilibrium theory but shows deviation from the theoretical washout curve, presumably due to slow desorption of solubilized but otherwise water insoluble components. The polymeric nonionic triblock copolymer Pluronic exhibits almost complete irreversible adsorption at the air/water interface over a molecular-weight range from 3 to 14 kDa. Similar irreversible dynamic behavior is observed for adsorption/desorption of the protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) from dilute aqueous solutions at the air/water interface. The new continuous-flow tensiometer (CFT) is a simple, yet powerful, tool to investigate sorption dynamics at fluid/fluid interfaces, especially for larger molecular weight surface-active agents that exhibit significant hindrance to desorption.

The measurements of the advancing contact angle for water, glycerol, diiodomethane and aqueous solutions of Triton X-100 (TX-100), Triton X-165 (TX-165), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDDS), sodium hexadecyl sulfonate (SHDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium bromide (CPyB) on quartz surface were carried out. On the basis of the contact angles values obtained for water, glycerol and diiodomethane the values of the Lifshitz–van der Waals component and electron-acceptor and electron-donor parameters of the acid–base component of the surface free energy of quartz were determined. The determined components and parameters of the quartz surface free energy were used for interpretation of the influence of nonionic, anionic and cationic surfactants on the wettability of the quartz. From obtained results it was appeared that the wettability of quartz by nonionic and anionic surfactants practically does not depend on the surfactants concentration in the range corresponding to their unsaturated monolayer at water–air interface and that there is linear dependence between adhesional and surface tension of aqueous solution of these surfactants. This dependence for TX-100, TX-165, SDDS and SHDS can be expressed by lines which slopes are positive. This slope and components of quartz surface free energy indicate that the interaction between the water molecules and quartz surface might be stronger than those between the quartz and surfactants molecules. So, the surface excess of surfactants concentration at the quartz–water interface is probably negative, and the possibility of surfactants to adsorb at the quartz/water film–water interface is higher than at the quartz–water interface. This conclusion is confirmed by the values of the adhesion work of “pure” surfactants, aqueous solutions of surfactants and water to quartz surface. In the case of the cationic surfactants the relationship between adhesional and surface tension is more complicated than that for nonionic and anionic surfactants and indicates that the relationship between the adsorption of the cationic surfactant at water–air and quartz–water interface depends on the concentration of the surfactants in the bulk phase.

The evaporation rate of water molecules across three kinds of interfaces (air/water interface (1), air/surfactant solution interface (2), and air/water interface covered by insoluble monolayer (3)) was examined using a remodeled thermogravimetric balance. There was no difference in both the evaporation rate and the activation energy for the first two interfaces for three types of surfactant solutions below and above the critical micelle concentration (cmc). This means that the molecular surface area from the Gibbs surface excess has nothing to do with the evaporation rate. In the third case, the insoluble monolayer of 1-heptadecanol decreased the evaporation rate and increased the activation energy, indicating a clear difference between an insoluble monolayer and an adsorbed film of soluble surfactant. This difference was substantiated by BAM images, too. The images of three surfactant solution interfaces were similar to that of just the water surface, while distinct structures of molecular assemblies were observed for the insoluble monolayer. The concentration profile of water molecules in an air/liquid interfacial region was derived by Fix's second law. The profile indicates that a definite layer just beneath the air/liquid interface of the surfactant solution is made mostly of water molecules and that the layer thickness is a few times the root-mean-square displacement %@mt;sys@%%@rl;;@%2%@ital@%Dt%@rsf@%%@rlx@%%@mx@% of the water molecules. The thickness was found to be more than a few nanometers, as estimated from several relaxation times derived from the other kinetics than evaporation of amphiphilic molecules in aqueous systems and a maximum evaporation rate of purified water.

Correlation of the behavior of foam from aqueous solutions of C(10)E(8) + TPeAB mixtures with the properties of the single foam films is sought through a theoretical analysis based on experimental data. The state in the adsorption layer on the air/solution interface has been determined from the surface tension experimental data by applying the Frumkin adsorption isotherm for mixed surfactants. Diverse parameters of the adsorption layer have been calculated. Values of the surface potential, estimated from the electrostatic disjoining pressure in the films, are found to be in good agreement with those calculated through the Grahame equation for the air/water interface. The energy of interaction (attraction) in the mixed adsorption layers is determined. The behavior of a foam body produced from solutions of the same composition, is also investigated in two independent ways using the stationary foam column and the foam life-time (decay rate) methods. Both techniques gave similar results with respect to foam stability.

Solubilization and interaction of azo-dye light yellow (X6G) at/with cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) was investigated spectrophotometricaly. The effect of cationic micelles on solubilization of anionic azo dye in aqueous micellar solutions of cationic surfactants was studied at pH 7 and 25 degrees C. The binding of dye to micelles implied a bathochromic shift in dye absorption spectra that indicates dye-surfactant interaction. The results showed that the solubility of dye increased with increasing surfactant concentration, as a consequence of the association between the dye and the micelles. The binding constants, K(b), were obtained from experimental absorption spectra. By using pseudo-phase model, the partition coefficients between the bulk water and surfactant micelles, K(x), were calculated. Gibbs energies of binding and distribution of dye between the bulk water and surfactant micelles were estimated. The results show favorable solubilization of dye in CTAB micelles.

The foam properties of mixtures of an eco-friendly amino-acid derived surfactant sodium lauroylglutamate (LGS) interacting with cationic surfactant dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (DTAB), nonionic surfactant laurel alkanolamide (LAA) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS), were investigated, respectively. It was amazing that the three investigated binary-mixed systems all showed obviously synergism effect on foaming, though LGS/DTAB catanionic mixture showed remarkable synergistic effect with no surprise. The equilibrium and dynamic surface activity, along with the interfacial molecular array behaviors of binary-mixed systems with different molar ratios at air/water surface were also studied. Moreover, the theoretical simulation was employed to investigate how the interfacial behaviors of surfactants at air/water surface affected the foam properties. The study might provide the meaningful guidance for utilizing the LGS-based systems, especially in constructing eco-friendly foam systems in the application areas of cosmetics, medicine and detergent.

The article describes synthesis of four hydroxyethyl alkylene–double alkyl bromide through substitution of nucleophilic d iethanolamine, 1-bromododecane, and 1,4-dibromobutane. The structure of the new hydroxyl cationic surfactant (HDCS) was characterized by 1H NMR and FTIR spectra. The aqueous solution of HDCS showed critical micelle concentration, i.e., 5.6 × 10?2 mM, and could reduce oil/water interfacial tension to 3.28 × 10?3 mN m?1. The surface tension measurements provided a series of parameters, including critical micelle concentration (CMC), surface tension at the CMC (γCMC), adsorption efficiency (pC20), and effectiveness of surface tension reduction (ΠCMC). In addition, maximum surface excess concentration (Гmax) and minimum surface area/molecule (Amin) at the air/water interface were obtained by the Gibbs adsorption isotherm. The influence of inorganic salts (sodium chloride, calcium chloride) and organic salts (sodium benzoate) on the surface tension of HDCS in aqueous solution was investigated. For wettability alteration measurement, contact angle measurement as a quantitative method was utilized. Meanwhile, foam ability, foam stability, and emulsifying property of the synthesized surfactant were also examined at different concentration. HDCS also had excellent viscosity property.
