This paper takes a significant step towards confirming a long-standing and far-reaching conjecture of Peter J. Cameron and Cheryl E. Praeger. They conjectured in 1993 that there are no non-trivial block-transitive 6-designs. We prove that the Cameron-Praeger conjecture is true for the important case of non-trivial Steiner 6-designs, i.e. for 6-(v,k,λ) designs with λ=1, except possibly when the group is PΓL(2,pe) with p=2 or 3, and e is an odd prime power.  相似文献

TheK-theory of the group algebra [] for a countable, discrete group is defined in terms of the simplicial ring of smooth simplices on [], where [] is given the fine topology with respect to its finite-dimensional, linear subspaces. The assembly map for this theory :K * B K * [] is studied and shown to be a rational injection. The proof uses the Connes-Karoubi Chern character fromK-theory of Banach algebras to cyclic homology, here generalized to any fine topological algebra, and proved to be multiplicative.  相似文献

In this paper a further refinement of Dade's projective conjecture, due to Boltje, is presented. This new statement includes ideas first published by Isaacs and Navarro as well as the recent contractibility version of Alperin's conjecture introduced by Boltje. Let R be any ring (with 1), Γ a group and RΓ the corresponding group ring. Let H be a subgroup of Γ of finite index. Let M be an RΓ-module, whose restriction to RH is projective.Moore's conjecture (J. Pure Appl. Algebra 7(1976)287): Assume for every nontrivial element x in Γ, at least one of the following two conditions holds:
(M1)
x〉∩H≠{e} (in particular this holds if Γ is torsion free)
(M2)
ord(x) is finite and invertible in R.
Then M is projective as an RΓ-module.More generally, the conjecture has been formulated for crossed products R*Γ and even for strongly graded rings R(Γ). We prove the conjecture for new families of groups, in particular for groups whose profinite completion is torsion free.The conjecture can be formulated for profinite modules M over complete groups rings [[RΓ]] where R is a profinite ring and Γ a profinite group. We prove the conjecture for arbitrary profinite groups. This implies Serre's theorem on cohomological dimension of profinite groups.  相似文献

In a recent paper, two of the authors used polarities in PG(2d−1,p) (p?2 prime, d?2) to construct non-geometric designs having the same parameters and the same p-rank as the geometric design PGd(2d,p) having as blocks the d-subspaces in the projective space PG(2d,p), hence providing the first known infinite family of examples where projective geometry designs are not characterized by their p-rank, as it is the case in all known proven cases of Hamada's conjecture. In this paper, the construction based on polarities is extended to produce designs having the same parameters, intersection numbers, and 2-rank as the geometric design AGd+1(2d+1,2) of the (d+1)-subspaces in the binary affine geometry AG(2d+1,2). These designs generalize one of the four non-geometric self-orthogonal 3-(32,8,7) designs of 2-rank 16 (V.D. Tonchev, 1986 [12]), and provide the only known infinite family of examples where affine geometry designs are not characterized by their rank.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce the concept of fair reception of a graph which is related to its domination number. We prove that all graphs G with a fair reception of size γ(G) satisfy Vizing's conjecture on the domination number of Cartesian product graphs, by which we extend the well‐known result of Barcalkin and German concerning decomposable graphs. Combining our concept with a result of Aharoni, Berger and Ziv, we obtain an alternative proof of the theorem of Aharoni and Szabó that chordal graphs satisfy Vizing's conjecture. This paper provides evidence for the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for analytic rank  abelian varieties  that are optimal quotients of attached to newforms. We prove theorems about the ratio , develop tools for computing with , and gather data about certain arithmetic invariants of the nearly abelian varieties of level . Over half of these have analytic rank , and for these we compute upper and lower bounds on the conjectural order of  . We find that there are at least such for which the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture implies that is divisible by an odd prime, and we prove for of these that the odd part of the conjectural order of really divides by constructing nontrivial elements of using visibility theory. We also give other evidence for the conjecture. The appendix, by Cremona and Mazur, fills in some gaps in the theoretical discussion in their paper on visibility of Shafarevich-Tate groups of elliptic curves.

Certain nonlinear binary codes contain more codewords than any comparable linear code presently known. These include the Kerdock and Preparata codes, which exist for all lengths 4m 16. At length 16 they coincide to give the Nordstrom-Robinson code. This paper constructs a nonlinear (64, 237, 12) code as the binary image, under the Gray map, of an extended cyclic code defined over the integers modulo 4 using Galois rings. The Nordstrom-Robinson code is defined in this same way, and like the Nordstrom-Robinson code, the new code is better than any linear code that is presently known.  相似文献

A simply connected finite complex X is called elliptic if its rational homotopy Lie algebra is of finite dimension and hyperbolic otherwise. According to a conjecture of Moore, there exists an exponent for the p-torsion part of if and only if X is elliptic. In this note, it is shown that, provided the prime p is sufficiently large, a hyperbolic space with p-torsion free loop space homology has no exponent in the p-torsion of the homotopy groups. For a class of formal spaces, this result is obtained for every odd prime.  相似文献

Abstract

We show that every element of the integral closure D′ of a domain D occurs as a coefficient of the minimal polynomial of a matrix with entries in D. This answers affirmatively a question of Brewer and Richman, namely, if integrally closed domains are characterized by the property that the minimal polynomial of every square matrix with entries in D is in D[x]. It follows that a domain D is integrally closed if and only if for every matrix A with entries in D the null ideal of A, N D (A)?=?{f?∈?D[x]?∣?f(A)?=?0} is a principal ideal of D[x].  相似文献

We prove the Arnold conjecture for a product of finitely many monotone symplectic manifolds and Calabi-Yau manifolds. The key point of our proof is realized by suitably choosing perturbations of the almost complex structures and Hamiltonian functions for the product case.
