On the socle of a noncommutative Jordan algebra

In this paper we study some questions related to the socle of a nondegenerate noncommutative Jordan algebra. First we show that elements of finite rank belong to the socle, and that every element in the socle is von Neumann regular and has finite spectrum. Next we show that for Jordan Banach algebras the socle coincides with the maximal von Neumann regular ideal. For a nondegenerate noncommutative Jordan algebra, the annihilator of its socle can be regarded as a radical which is, generally, larger than Jacobson radical. Moreover, a nondegenerate noncommutative Jordan algebra whose socle has zero annihilator is isomorphic to a subdirect sum of primitive algebras having nonzero socle (which were described in [4]). Finally, these results are specialized to the particular case of an alternative algebra.The authors wish to thank the referee for his suggestions for improving the presentation of the paper.     

A Characterization of Homomorphisms Between Banach Algebras

We show that every unital invertibility preserving linear map from a yon Neumann algebra onto a semi-simple Banach algebra is a Jordan homomorphism; this gives an affirmative answer to a problem of Kaplansky for all yon Neumann algebras. For a unital linear map Ф from a semi-simple complex Banach algebra onto another, we also show that the following statements are equivalent: (1)Ф is an homomorphism; (2) Ф is completely invertibility preserving; (3) Ф is 2-invertibility preserving.     

Canonical extension of actions of locally compact quantum groups

In this paper, we generalize the notion of the canonical extension of automorphisms of von Neumann algebras to the case of actions of locally compact quantum groups (in the sense of Kustermans and Vaes). Various expected properties will be shown to hold for this new canonical extension. As an application, we describe the flow of weights of the crossed product of a type III factor by some special action of a discrete Kac algebra.

Similarity degrees for the crossed product of von Neumann algebras

In this paper, we will estimate an upper bound for the similarity degree of the crossed product of a hyperfinite finite von Neumann algebra by weakly compact action of an infinite discrete group. We will also improve some upper bounds for similarity degrees of some finite von Neumann algebras.     

A dynamical systems approach to the Kadison-Singer problem

In these notes we develop a link between the Kadison-Singer problem and questions about certain dynamical systems. We conjecture that whether or not a given state has a unique extension is related to certain dynamical properties of the state. We prove that if any state corresponding to a minimal idempotent point extends uniquely to the von Neumann algebra of the group, then every state extends uniquely to the von Neumann algebra of the group. We prove that if any state arising in the Kadison-Singer problem has a unique extension, then the injective envelope of a C*-crossed product algebra associated with the state necessarily contains the full von Neumann algebra of the group. We prove that this latter property holds for states arising from rare ultrafilters and δ-stable ultrafilters, independent, of the group action and also for states corresponding to non-recurrent points in the corona of the group.     

Vertex-Compressed Subalgebras of a Graph von Neumann Algebra

In Cho (Acta Appl. Math. 95:95–134, 2007 and Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 1:367–398, 2007), we introduced Graph von Neumann Algebras which are the (groupoid) crossed product algebras of von Neumann algebras and graph groupoids via graph-representations, which are groupoid actions. In Cho (Acta Appl. Math. 95:95–134, 2007), we showed that such crossed product algebras have the amalgamated reduced free probabilistic properties, where the reduction is totally depending on given directed graphs. Moreover, in Cho (Complex Anal. Oper. Theory 1:367–398, 2007), we characterize each amalgamated free blocks of graph von Neumann algebras: we showed that they are characterized by the well-known von Neumann algebras: Classical group crossed product algebras and (operator-valued) matricial algebras. This shows that we can provide a nicer way to investigate such groupoid crossed product algebras, since we only need to concentrate on studying graph groupoids and characterized algebras. How about the compressed subalgebras of them? i.e., how about the inner (cornered) structures of a graph von Neumann algebra? In this paper, we will provides the answer of this question. Consequently, we show that vertex-compressed subalgebras of a graph von Neumann algebra are characterized by other graph von Neumann algebras. This gives the full characterization of the vertex-compressed subalgebras of a graph von Neumann algebra, by other graph von Neumann algebras.     

Local Minimal Curves in Homogeneous Reductive Spaces of the Unitary Group of a Finite von Neumann Algebra

We study the metric geometry of homogeneous reductive spaces of the unitary group of a finite von Neumann algebra with a non complete Riemannian metric. The main result gives an abstract sufficient condition in order that the geodesics of the Levi-Civita connection are locally minimal. Then, we show how this result applies to several examples. Linear maps preserving zero products on nest subalgebras of von Neumann algebras

In this paper, it is proved that every surjective linear map preserving identity and zero products in both directions between two nest subalgebras with non-trivial nests of any factor von Neumann algebra is an isomorphism; and that every surjective weakly continuous linear map preserving identity and zero Jordan products in both directions between two nest subalgebras with non-trivial nests of any factor von Neumann algebra is either an isomorphism or an anti-isomorphism.     

Local 3-cocycles of von Neumann algebras

We show that every local 3-cocycle of a von Neumann algebra R into an arbitrary unital dual R-bimodule S is a 3-cocycle.

Representations of product systems over semigroups and dilations of commuting CP maps

We prove that every pair of commuting CP maps on a von Neumann algebra M can be dilated to a commuting pair of endomorphisms (on a larger von Neumann algebra). To achieve this, we first prove that every completely contractive representation of a product system of C^∗-correspondences over the semigroup N² can be dilated to an isometric (or Toeplitz) representation.

On classification of von Neumann algebras in a space with conjugation

In this paper for the first time we show that in the complex Hilbert space with the conjugation operator a classification of von Neumann algebras is possible. Similar classification is known for Krein spaces. Projectors (idempotents) often serve as elements of quantum logic. In operator theories projectors play the role of elements from which bounded operators are constructed. For one special case we show that for any projector from von Neumann algebra which acts in a separable Hilbert space one can always find conjugation operator J adjoined to this algebra for which the projector is self-adjoint.

Completely positive projections on a Hilbert space

The purpose of this paper is to prove that a completely positive projection on a Hilbert space associated with a standard form of a von Neumann algebra induces the existence of a conditional expectation of the von Neumann algebra with respect to a normal state, and we consider the application to a standard form of an injective von Neumann algebra.

     

Outer actions of measured quantum groupoids

Mimicking a recent article of Stefaan Vaes, in which was proved that every locally compact quantum group can act outerly, we prove that we get the same result for measured quantum groupoids, with an appropriate definition of outer actions of measured quantum groupoids. This result is used to show that every measured quantum groupoid can be found from some depth 2 inclusion of von Neumann algebras.     

Realizing ultragraph Leavitt path algebras as Steinberg algebras

In this article, we realize the finite range ultragraph Leavitt path algebras as Steinberg algebras. This realization allows us to use the groupoid approach to obtain structural results about these algebras. Using the skew product of groupoids, we show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras are graded von Neumann regular rings. We characterize strongly graded ultragraph Leavitt path algebras and show that every ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is semiprimitive. Moreover, we characterize irreducible representations of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras. We also show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras can be realized as Cuntz-Pimsner rings.
