The theory of light diffraction at the impedance step is developed which allows for an additional surface wave. Reflection and transmission coefficients for a surface wave are determined as well as radiative losses at the diffraction of the surface polaritons (SP). Coefficients of transformation of the incident bulk radiation energy to the SP energy are calculated. Resonance effects in the mirror reflection of bulk radiation are investigated. Possible application of the predicted effects for the study of optical properties of thin films and transition layers are discussed.  相似文献

The results of a study on the influence of the nonparabolicity of the free carriers dispersion law on the propagation of surface polaritons (SPs) located near the interface between an n-type semiconductor and a metal arc reported. The semiconductor plasma is assumed to be warm and nonisothermal. The nonparabolicity of the electron dispersion law has two effects. The first one is associated with nonlinear self-interaction of the SPs. The nonlinear dispersion equation and the nonlinear Schrodinger equation for the amplitude of the SP envelope are obtained. The nonlinear evolution of the SP is studied on the base of the above mentioned equations. The second effect results in third harmonics generation. Analysis shows that these third harmonics may appear as a pure surface polariton, a pseudosurface polariton, or a superposition of a volume wave and a SP depending on the wave frequency, electron density and lattice dielectric constant.  相似文献

The specific features of elastic scattering of volume waves and surface plasmon polaritons by polycrystalline gold films have been investigated. An analysis of the relative scattered energy, power spectral density of surface roughness, and integral and angular dependences of scattering of waves of different nature indicates a strong nonradiative multiple scattering of surface plasmon polaritons in gold films. When roughness increases, this scattering leads to an increase in scattering isotropy and to a partial loss of structural information about gold films. The analysis of the scattered energy of surface plasmon polaritons with application of the data on multifractal dimension of gold surface indicates also that the radiative scattering of surface plasmon polaritons depends on both the rms surface roughness and the surface wave propagation length.  相似文献

Nonradiative (surface and bulk) polaritons in a semiconductor structure composed of two heterojunctions GaAs/AlxGa1?x As are investigated under the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) conditions. The dispersive, polarization, and energy characteristics of these polaritons are determined including energy dissipation in the two-dimensional electron semiconductor layers. The phase and group velocities of surface and bulk polaritons are shown to be quantized under the IQHE conditions. It is found that resonance coupling of two surface polariton modes may occur in double GaAs/AlxGa1?x As heterojunctions. Possible experimental observation of nonradiative polaritons is discussed.  相似文献

The process of the excitation and propagation of pseudosurface acoustic waves in crystals of the langasite family is studied via X-ray diffractometry for the first time. The investigations are carried out using the BESSY II synchrotron radiation source in the double-crystal X-ray diffractometer scheme. The process of pseudosurface acoustic wave propagation is studied based on an analysis of the diffraction spectra of acoustically modulated crystals. Both the velocities of the pseudosurface acoustic waves and the power flow angles of the acoustic energy are measured for the first time. The pseudosurface acoustic wave is shown to be flowing. Surface and pseudosurface acoustic waves generated by an interdigital transducer in the Z cut of a La3Ga5.5Ta0.5O14 crystal are compared.  相似文献

The general effective-medium dispersion relations are derived for surface-localized magnetic polaritons which propagate parallel to the surface between a superlattice and semi-infinite bulk material, as applied to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic superlattices, in the situation when a static magnetic field is applied in the plane of the layers and parallel to the magnetization. The dependence of the energy of the surface waves on the volume fraction of the ferromagnetic superlattice component and the influence of the external magnetic field on the spectrum of the surface magnetic polaritons for the antiferromagnetic superlattice are investigated. The spectrum of the surface-localized magnetic polaritons which appear at the junction of the magnetic (ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic) superlattice with the magnetic material are more complex, in contrast to the cases of semi-infinite magnetic material or semi-infinite magnetic SL. It is essential that in all cases in the presence of the external magnetic field the spectrum of the magnetic polaritons are non-reciprocal. The properties of surface polaritons are discussed in detail for the system ferromagnetic superlattice (YIG/non magnet)/YAG and the antiferromagnetic superlattice (MnF2/ZnF2)/FeF2.  相似文献

The existence of the surface polaritons at the interface separating a semi-infinite uniform left-handed metamaterial and a one-dimensional photonic crystal composed of alternating layers of two kinds of single-negative materials is theoretically investigated. The dispersion characteristics of the surface polaritons are analyzed and demonstrated that in the presence of metamaterial, the surface polaritons are sensitive to light polarization, so that there exist only backward TM-polarized (or TE-polarized) kind of the surface polaritons depending on the ratio of the thicknesses of the two periodic stacking layers. The existence regions of the surface polariton modes are determined for both TM-polarized and TE-polarized surface polariton modes.  相似文献

The spectral energy densities of surface plasmon and phonon polaritons are calculated in case of thermodynamic equilibrium. It is demonstrated that the spectral distribution of surface polaritons in equilibrium is quite different from the Planck?s law for photons. Temperature dependence of the surface density of energy for two-dimensional fluctuations is different from the temperature dependence of volume density of energy for photons in equilibrium.  相似文献

A theory is constructed for the reflection of plane electromagnetic waves in uniaxial crystals with a positive definite permittivity tensor and an arbitrarily oriented metallized boundary. The problem is solved both for general-position orientations corresponding to three-partial reflection and for special conditions allowing two-partial reflections: mode conversions when the incident and reflected waves belong to different sheets of the refraction surface and “pure” reflections when both waves belong to the same sheet. The space of pure reflections is shown to be formed by two types of optical-axis orientations: arbitrary directions in the plane of the crystal surface and in the plane of incidence. The configurations of the conversion surface for optically positive and negative crystals are investigated. A subspace of pure reflections that transform into one-partial bulk polaritons with the energy flux parallel to the surface at grazing incidence has been found. The domain of existence of such bulk eigenmodes is bounded by two “lines” of solutions. These are any directions along the boundary containing the optical axis for ordinary polaritons and the direction along the projection of the optical axis onto the surface at an arbitrary orientation of the axis with respect to the boundary for extraordinary polaritons.  相似文献

The theory is worked out which considers reflection of surface polaritons normally incident on a vertical dielectric barrier. The theory is based upon treatments of interactions of localized and non-localized eigen modes of the system. For the cases of plasmon and phonon polaritons calculated are the reflection and transmission coefficients of polaritons and the energy diagrams of volume waves excited during reflection.  相似文献

The propagation properties and field structures of a new class of electromagnetic surface excitations, the so-called guided surface polaritons, are investigated. These waves exhibit features of both film-guided modes and surface polaritons. The conditions of their existence dependent on the optical constants are discussed. The exciton-polariton luminescence spectra of the ZnTe cystals are investigated in the region of the ground (n= 1) exciton state. In addition to emission of the both branches of bulk polaritons, luminescence of surface polaritons is first revealed. We investigated the contribution of electron-phonon interaction to the broadening parameter Γ of the Wannier-Stark ladder levels in oxidized macroporous silicon structures with different concentration of Si-O-Si states (TO and LO phonons). The obtained value of the Wannier-Stark ladder parameter Γ is much less than the djacent level energy evaluated from giant oscillations of resonance electron scattering on the surface states. We determined the influence of broadening on the oscillation amplitude in IR absorption spectra as interaction of the surface multi-phonon polaritons with scattered electrons. This interaction transforms the resonance electron scattering in samples with low concentration of Si-O-Si states into ordinary scattering on ionized impurities for samples with high concentration of Si-O-Si states. The transformation takes place at the scattering lifetime coinciding with the period of electron oscillations in the surface electric field.  相似文献

The transformation of the electronic excitation energy in a plane-layered nanostructure with two-dimensional J-aggregates of a cyanine dye has been studied theoretically. The dependences of the plasmon–exciton interaction energy on the system parameters have been determined. In the case of small values of the Rabi frequency, the rates of nonradiative energy transfer from surface plasmon–polaritons of the metal substrate to molecular excitons of J-aggregates have been calculated in terms of the perturbation theory. The dispersion laws for hybrid plasmon–exciton states have been determined, and it has been shown that the Rabi splitting can range up to 100 meV.  相似文献

The properties of electromagnetic waves propagating in a semibounded, nonlinear, ferromagnetic medium are investigated. It is shown that under certain conditions the interaction between the spin and electromagnetic waves results in the localization of volume polaritons near the surface. Self-localization of surface polaritons due to the nonlinear properties of the medium occurs thereby. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation for nonlinear surface and volume polaritons is derived, and the conditions under which solitons of these waves exist are determined. The wave intensity required to observe the predicted effects is estimated.  相似文献

The dispersion and energy characteristics of surface polaritons at a high-temperature supercon-ductor-insulator interface have been studied taking into account the dissipation in both media. The dispersions have been found and the criteria for the existence of surface waves have been formulated for temperatures below the phase transition point. The frequency dependences of the depth of penetration of surface polaritons into each medium and their mean free paths have been determined. The characteristic frequencies near which the wave parameters of surface polaritons undergo substantial changes have been revealed.  相似文献

The emission spectra of thermally stimulated surface plasmon polaritons (thermally stimulated surface plasmon polaritons) and a blackbody have been analyzed and compared, and the temperature dependence of these spectra has been studied. It has been found that the total energy of the entire ensemble of surface plasmons is proportional to the cube of temperature and their spectrum is red-shifted from the blackbody spectrum. It has been shown that the spectrum of thermally stimulated surface plasmon polaritons obeys the Wien’s displacement law, yet with another constant. The fraction of the photon energy of the conducting layer transferred to the surface plasmons has been estimated. It has been demonstrated numerically by the example of a gold layer that this fraction can exceed 10% for a layer thickness of less than 1 mm.  相似文献

Hybrid surface plasmon polaritons propagating in a new configuration comprising an ultrathin metal film bounded by a positive birefringent crystal on one side and a glass material on the other side are investigated. The results show that the conditions for existence of such hybrid surface plasmon polaritons have a strong dependence on the structure parameters. This feature opens the way for a new type of optical sensor with directional sensitivity.  相似文献
