Analysis of ozone (O3) pollution in the Salmiyah residential area of Kuwait was conducted over a period of 12 months, from March 2008 to February 2009. Salmiyah is a densely populated area, mainly by expatriates. Apartment buildings are the dominant type of dwellings available in Salmiyah. The area is surrounded by major highways that get congested with traffic at peak hours of the day. The objectives of this work were: to monitor ambient tropospheric levels of O3 and its precursors both for test comparing such levels to international standard limits and for assessing their health effects, to understand their diurnal behaviors, and to study their seasonal trends. The results of this study indicated that O3, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) exceeded the ambient air quality standards during specific times of the year. The diurnal patterns for NO2 and NMHC showed three peaks which were directly dependent on high traffic density, while only two daily maxima were observed in the case of O3. Finally, O3 compared to its precursors exhibited a completely opposite monthly mean distribution with the highest concentration levels detected during the summer season (July and August).  相似文献

An automated system for the monitoring of volatile organic compound (VOC) ozone precursors in ambient air is described. The measuring technique consists of subambient preconcentration on a cooled trap followed by thermal desorption and GC/FID analysis. First, the technical development, which permits detection limits below 0.05 ppbv to be reached, proceeded in two steps: (1) the determination of optimum sampling parameters (trap composition and conditioning, outlet split, desorption temperature); (2) the development of a reliable calibration method based on a highly accurate standard. Then, a 4-year field application of the hourly measuring chain was carried out at two urban sites. On the one hand, quality control procedures provided the best VOC identification (peak assignment) and quantification (reproducibility, blank system control). On the other hand, the success and performances of the routine experience (88% of the measurements covered more than 40 target compounds) indicated the high quality and suitability of the instrumentation which is actually applied in several French air quality monitoring networks. Finally, an example of data analysis is presented. Data handling identified important organic compound sources other than vehicle exhaust.  相似文献

A passive sampler method has been developed for ozone monitoring. The method involves a badge type passive sampler and is applied to the analysis of ozone exposure as an indoor and outdoor air pollutants. The passive sampler used in this experiment consists of glass fiber filter coated with NaNO(2), Na(2)CO(3) and ethylene glycol, and diffusion filter to remove the wind effects and several spacer effects. The principle component of coating is nitrite ion, which in the presence of ozone is oxidized to nitrate ion on the filter medium and then analyzed by ion chromatography. The results from laboratory and field tests show excellent correlation between the passive method and standard ozone monitoring system, integrated over the same time period. The wind tunnel parameters that were examined show that determination of relative humidity (ranging from 30 to 80%), temperature (ranging from 10 to 20 degrees C) and wind velocity ( ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 m s(-1)) at typical ozone levels (1-40 ppb) do not influence sampler performance. The detection limit attained 0.1 ppb is adequate for the determination of ozone in indoor and outdoor areas. A statistical comparison with a reference method was done in order to demonstrate the validation of the developed method. The accuracy of the proposed method, expressed as a percent relative error, when compared with a standard reference method, is found to be better than about +/-3.5%. The standard errors of the difference was measured in terms of relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) and it was found that the R.S.D. of the passive sampler for O(3) sampler ranged from 2.0 to 6.0%.  相似文献

The sensor is based on silver and platinum electrodes with an intervening silver iodide disk as a solid electrolyte. The small disk (13 mm diameter) is easily made by pressing (7000 kg cm-2) silver powder, silver iodide and a platinum gauze in layers in a die. The detector cell containing the disk is thermostated at 120 ± 0.1°C. When sample gas at 30 ml min-1 impinges on the platinum cathode, the current flowing in the external circuit is linearly related to the concentration of ozone and/or nitrogen dioxide up to 0.5 ppm from the detection limit of 0.5 ppb for ozone or 1 ppb for nitrogen dioxide.  相似文献

Multivariate statistical analysis of sediment data (input matrix 122 × 15) collected from 122 sampling sites from the western coastline of the USA and analyzed for 15 analytes indicates that the data structure could be explained by four latent factors. These factors are conditionally named “anthropogenic”, “organic”, “natural”, and “hot spots”. They explain over 85% of the total variance of the data system, which is an acceptable value for the PCA model. The receptor models obtained after regression of the mass on the absolute principal components scores ensures reliable estimation of the contribution of each possible natural or anthropogenic source to the mass of each chemical component. It can be concluded that the region of interest reveals a different pattern of pollution compared with the eastern coastline treated statistically in a previous study.  相似文献

This environmetric study deals with modeling and interpretation of river water monitoring data from the basin of the Saale river and its tributaries the Ilm and the Unstrut. For a period of one year of observation between September 1993 and August 1994 a data set from twelve campaigns at twenty-nine sampling sites from the Saale river and six campaigns from the river Ilm at seven sampling sites and from river Unstrut at ten sampling sites was collected. Twenty-seven chemical and physicochemical properties were measured to estimate the water quality. The application of cluster analysis, principal components analysis, and apportioning modeling on absolute principal components scores revealed important information about the ecological status of the region of interest:identification of two separate patterns of pollution (upper and lower stream of the rivers);identification of six latent factors responsible for the data structure with different content for the two identified pollution patterns; anddetermination of the contribution of each latent factor (source of emission) to the formation of the total concentration of the chemical burden of the river water.As a result more objective ecological policy and decision making is possible.  相似文献

In pharmaceutical research, collections of active compounds directed against specific therapeutic targets usually evolve over time. Small molecule discovery is an iterative process. New compounds are discovered, alternative compound series explored, some series discontinued, and others prioritized. The design of new compounds usually takes into consideration prior chemical and structure-activity relationship (SAR) knowledge. Hence, historically grown compound collections represent a viable source of chemical and SAR information that might be utilized to retrospectively analyze roadblocks in compound optimization and further guide discovery projects. However, SAR analysis of large and heterogeneous sets of active compounds is also principally complicated. We have subjected evolving compound data sets to SAR monitoring using activity landscape models in order to evaluate how composition and SAR characteristics might change over time. Chemotype and potency distributions in evolving data sets directed against different therapeutic targets were analyzed and alternative activity landscape representations generated at different points in time to monitor the progression of global and local SAR features. Our results show that the evolving data sets studied here have predominantly grown around seed clusters of active compounds that often emerged early on, while other SAR islands remained largely unexplored. Moreover, increasing scaffold diversity in evolving data sets did not necessarily yield new SAR patterns, indicating a rather significant influence of "me-too-ism" (i.e., introducing new chemotypes that are similar to already known ones) on the composition and SAR information content of the data sets.  相似文献

Air monitoring networks are necessary to assess air quality in order to reduce pollution to levels which minimize harmful effects on human health and the environment. This paper describes a method to design or optimize air quality monitoring networks for nitrogen dioxide and ozone and its application in Malaga, a medium large city located in Andalusia, southern Spain, with traffic being the main source of air pollution. The completion of this method revealed that the old assessment network in Malaga was badly designed and made it possible to determine that one traffic-orientated and one background control station were necessary for NO2 assessment in Malaga, as well as two control stations for O3. First the number of stations necessary is obtained from historical data. Sampling campaigns with passive diffusion samplers at 74 sites were then carried out to obtain information on the pollution distribution in Malaga. The average concentrations found for NO2 and O3 were 22.8 μg/m3 and 64.3 μg/m3 respectively. Maximum values of up to 42.2 μg/m3 NO2 were found in Malaga city centre and O3 reached 91.5 μg/m3 downwind from the emission source. After spatial interpolation of the obtained values with Geographical Information Systems, a selection of the best locations for the monitoring stations was made, in line with the macro- and microscale siting requirements of the European Directive 2008/50/EC on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe.  相似文献

The analysis algorithm, which simultaneously interprets the transfer route and types of nuclear materials and the types of transfer container, has been developed for the radioactive material transfers in the nuclear facility. This method can be accomplished by integration of video images based on pixel differences and radiation data imported by NDA radiation sensors in real time. This technology, based on pattem recognition by neural networks, is well suited for surveillance systems of large automated facilities, spent fuel storage facilities and new conceptual hot cell facilities such as DUPIC(Direct Use of spent PWR fuel in CANDU reactors) facility.  相似文献

The process of ozone treatment of high kappa kraft pulp is studied using polarization modulated Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The complementary information from the two methods enables a detailed analysis of reaction sites on the fibers, and gives a detailed view of the reaction mechanisms of delignification by ozone treatment. Furthermore we describe a simple method to measure the kappa number of paper sheets that can be used on-line.  相似文献

The industrial use of ozone as a sanitizing agent in water treatment and food processing in recent years calls for sensor technologies for monitoring ozone in water for process control. Ozone molecules absorb UV light with a peak absorption wavelength at 254 nm. This property has been used in this work to develop a simple sensor technology for online, real-time continuous monitoring of trace ozone in water. A Teflon AF2400 tube filled with pure water forms a liquid core waveguide (LCW), which is used as a long-path-length optical absorption cell. This pure water filled tube was deployed into a water sample. Ozone molecules dissolved in the water sample permeate through the Teflon AF2400 tube wall and dissolve in water filled in the tube. This prevents interference species from entering the LCW, and eliminates interferences. The optical absorption signal of the long-path-length cell at 254 nm measured by guiding light through the LCW is used as a sensing signal. This simple structured sensor does not involve any chemical reagent, is reversible, and has a response time <4.5 minutes. It can be used to detect ozone in water samples down to 3.6 × 10(-9) mol L(-1).  相似文献
