Universal mechanisms of adsorption and capillary condensation of toluene and nitrogen on ordered MCM-41 and PHTS materials are studied by means of high-resolution experiments and Monte Carlo molecular simulations. A molecular simulation model of toluene adsorption in silica nanopores, which accounts for surface heterogeneity, and a hybrid molecular-macsroscopic method for pore size distribution (PSD) calculations have been developed. For a range of reference materials, the PSD results obtained from toluene isotherms are consistent with the results of nitrogen adsorption using the nonlocal density functional theory method.  相似文献

Plugged hexagonal templated silica (PHTS) materials are synthesized using a high TEOS/EO(20)PO(70)EO(20) ratio in the SBA-15 synthesis. This generates internal microporous nanocapsules or plugs in part of the channels, which could be inferred from the two-step desorption branch. These materials exhibit a tunable amount of open and plugged pores and a very high micropore volume (up to 0.24 mL/g) and are more stable than the conventional micellar templated structures known so far. In this study the adsorption properties of PHTS are investigated and compared to those of its plug-free analogue SBA-15. For this purpose nitrogen, n-hexane, n-heptane, c-hexane, 3-methylpentane, 1-hexene, and water were adsorbed on SBA-15 and PHTSs with a different ratio of open and plugged mesopores. The adsorption of n-hexane, c-hexane, n-heptane, and 3-methylpentane on SBA-15 and PHTS-A demonstrated that the presence of the plugs had an effect on the uptake of adsorbate in the low relative pressure region, the position of the capillary condensation step, and the total adsorbed amount of adsorbate. The results showed that n-heptane and 3-methylpentane cannot access part of the micropore system of SBA-15 and PHTS-A. Adsorption of c-hexane and n-hexane on PHTS-A indicated that not only the kinetic diameter but also the shape of the molecule is an important factor for being able to be adsorbed into the micropores or past the plugs. Moreover, these two adsorbates were the most efficient in filling up the available pore volume. From the adsorption of n-hexane on PHTSs with a different ratio of open and plugged pores, it was concluded that the size of the plugs differed, which depends on the synthesis conditions. Water adsorption isotherms proved SBA-15 and PHTS-B to be more hydrophobic than PHTS-A. n-Hexane, 1-hexene, and toluene were adsorbed on SBA-15 and the PHTSs to investigate the influence of the polarity of the adsorbate. The isotherms showed higher uptakes for polar adsorbates on more hydrophobic materials and vice versa.  相似文献

Morphological, structural and adsorption characteristics of nanooxides (fumed individual silica, alumina and titania, and composite silica/alumina, silica/titania and alumina/silica/titania) were compared after different treatments (wetting/drying, ball-milling, suspending/drying, heating) at different temperatures (373–1173 K) using low-temperature nitrogen adsorption data. The structural characteristics such as specific surface area (S BET), pore volume (V p), pore (PSD) and particle (PaSD) size distributions (calculated using self-consisting regularization procedure with respect to both PSD and PaSD), fractality, adsorption energy distributions depend differently on heating temperature because desorption of water molecularly and dissociatively adsorbed at a surface and in bulk of primary nanoparticles occurs over a wide temperature range at different rates. These processes affect both structural and energetic characteristics of nanooxides.  相似文献

The present work provides the first study of ordered mesoporous materials SBA-15 coated with microporous zeolites ZSM-5 using molecular simulations. Several model structures with characteristics such as periodic arrangement of mesopores, randomly arranged micropores, surface hydroxyls and bulk deformations of SBA-15 were used. Cartesian coordinates of ZSM-5 unit lattice were obtained from the literature and the 100 face of H-ZSM-5 unit cell was then placed on the surface of SBA-15 and the entire structure was equilibrated to obtain final configuration. The resulting structure was characterized using simulated small angle and wide angle X-ray diffraction, Connolly surface area (to compare BET area), accessible pore volume for nitrogen molecules (to compare with t-plot volume of micro and mesopores) and methane adsorption at 303 K. The orientation of ZSM-5 on the SBA-15 had no effect on the surface area, pore volume or adsorption capacity. In order to find out if the addition of microporous ZSM-5 should increase the total methane adsorption capacity due to addition of micropores, we studied adsorption on bare and coated SBA-15. However, total adsorption capacity was found to decrease, while the number of methane molecules adsorbed per unit cell of the SBA-15 structure increased. An existing experimental method (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2004, 126, 14324) of the synthesizing hybrid ZSM-5/SBA-15 structure was studied using accessible micropore volume (by t-plot). It was found that the procedure made all the micropores inaccessible. A modification of the method or use of other host materials is suggested to use the benefits of narrow micropore distribution in ZSM-5.  相似文献

We have analyzed various phenomena that occur in nanopores, focusing on elucidating their key mechanisms, to advance the effective engineering use of nanoporous materials. As ideal experimental systems, molecular simulations can effectively provide information at the molecular level that leads to mechanistic insight. In this short review, several of our recent results are presented. The first topic is the critical point depression of Lennard-Jones fluid in silica slit pores due to finite size effects, studied by our original Monte Carlo (MC) technique. We demonstrate that the first layers of adsorbed molecules in contact with the pore walls act as a “fluid wall” and impose extra finite size effects on the fluid confined in the central portion of the pore. We next present a new kernel for pore size distribution (PSD) analysis, based entirely on molecular simulation, which consists of local isotherms for nitrogen adsorption in carbon slit pores at 77 K. The kernel is obtained by combining grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method and open pore cell MC method that was developed in the previous study. We show that overall trends of the PSDs of activated carbons calculated with our new kernel and with conventional kernel from non-local density functional theory are nearly the same; however, apparent difference can be seen between them. As the third topic, we apply a free energy analysis method with the aid of GCMC simulations to investigate the gating behavior observed in a porous coordination polymer, and propose a mechanism for the adsorption-induced structural transition based on both the theory of equilibrium and kinetics. Finally, we construct an atomistic silica pore model that mimics MCM-41, which has atomic-level surface roughness, and perform molecular simulations to understand the mechanism of capillary condensation with hysteresis. We calculate the work required for the gas–liquid transition from the simulation data, and show that the adsorption branch with hysteresis for MCM-41 arise from spontaneous capillary condensation from a metastable state.  相似文献

Siliceous SBA-15 mesoporous molecular sieves were functionalized with different amounts of 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane. To obtain a more detailed insight into the material properties of the prepared samples, their textural parameters were combined with results of thermal analysis. Adsorption isotherms of carbon dioxide on parent and functionalized SBA-15 were measured in the temperature range from 273 to 333 K. From the temperature dependence of CO(2) isotherms the isosteric adsorption heats of CO(2) were determined and discussed. Information about the surface energetic heterogeneity caused by tethered 3-aminopropyl groups were obtained from CO(2) adsorption energy distributions calculated using the theoretical CO(2) adsorption isotherms derived from the non-local density functional theory. The values of isosteric heats and the energy distributions of CO(2) adsorption detect highly energetic sites and enabled quantification of their concentrations.  相似文献

The evaluation of the pore-size distribution (PSD) of natural and modified mesoporous zeolites, i.e., clinoptilolites is presented. We demonstrate the SEM results showing that the pores of fracture-type from 25-50 nm to 100 nm in size between clinoptilolite grains, as well as pores between crystal aggregates up to 500 nm in size are present in the studied material. The detailed distribution of pore sizes and tortuosity factor of the above-mentioned materials are determined from the adsorption-desorption isotherms of nitrogen measured volumetrically at 77 K. To obtain the reliable pore size distribution (PSD) of the above-mentioned materials both adsorption and desorption branches of the experimental hysteresis loop are described simultaneously by recently developed corrugated pore structure model (CPSM) of Androutsopoulos and Salmas. Evaluated pore size distributions are characterized by well-defined smooth peaks placed in the region of the mesoporosity. Moreover, the mean pore diameter calculated from the classical static measurement of nitrogen adsorption at 77 K correspond very well to the pore diameters from SEM, showing the applicability of the CPSM for characterization of the porosity of natural zeolites. We conclude that classical static adsorption measurements combined with the proper modeling of the capillary condensation/evaporation phenomena are a powerful method which can be applied for pore structure characterization of natural and modified clinoptilolites.  相似文献

Mesoporous silica SBA-15 was modified in a three-step process to obtain a material with poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAAM) grafted onto the inner pore surface. Water sorption calorimetry was implemented to characterize the materials obtained after each step regarding the porosity and surface properties. The modification process was carried out by (i) increasing the number of surface silanol groups, (ii) grafting 1-(trichlorosilyl)-2-(m-/p-(chloromethylphenyl) ethane, acting as an anchor for (iii) the polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide. Water sorption isotherms and the enthalpy of hydration are presented. Pore size distributions were calculated on the basis of the water sorption isotherms by applying the BJH model. Complementary measurements with nitrogen sorption and small-angle X-ray diffraction are presented. The increase in the number of surface silanol groups occurs mainly in the intrawall pores, the anchor is mainly located in the intrawall pores, and the intrawall pore volume is absent after the surface grafting of PNIPAAM. Hence, PNIPAAM seals off the intrawall pores. Water sorption isotherms directly detect the presence of intrawall porosity. Pore size distributions can be calculated from the isotherms. Furthermore, the technique provides information regarding the hydration capability (i.e., wettability of different chemical surfaces) and thermodynamic information.  相似文献

It is well known that the bimodal shape of the pore size distribution (PSD) curves is typical for various carbonaceous materials (of different origin and/or treated thermally or chemically). A systematic investigation of this effect has been discussed using the Nguyen and Do method with proposed recently the ASA algorithm. A series of numerically generated adsorption isotherms (N(2), T=77 K) and experimental data were analyzed. We investigated various possible situations related to the shape of the PSD curves, i.e., the intensity of the both peaks, their mutual location and the vanishing of one of them. Moreover, the problem in the similarity of the local adsorption isotherms from the range of pore widths corresponding to the gap between peaks is discussed. The analysis of obtained results (as well as published by others) shows that the bimodal shape of the pore size distributions is a characteristic feature for many adsorbents possessing even a small amount of micropores. It is shown that this feature results from the similarity of the local adsorption isotherm in the range of the pore widths for which the gap between peaks (related to the primary and secondary micropore filling mechanism) exists.  相似文献

Adsorption of carbon dioxide and methane in porous activated carbon and carbon nanotube was studied experimentally and by Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation. A gravimetric analyzer was used to obtain the experimental data, while in the simulation we used graphitic slit pores of various pore size to model activated carbon and a bundle of graphitic cylinders arranged hexagonally to model carbon nanotube. Carbon dioxide was modeled as a 3-center-Lennard-Jones (LJ) molecule with three fixed partial charges, while methane was modeled as a single LJ molecule. We have shown that the behavior of adsorption for both activated carbon and carbon nanotube is sensitive to pore width and the crossing of isotherms is observed because of the molecular packing, which favors commensurate packing for some pore sizes. Using the adsorption data of pure methane or carbon dioxide on activated carbon, we derived its pore size distribution (PSD), which was found to be in good agreement with the PSD obtained from the analysis of nitrogen adsorption data at 77 K. This derived PSD was used to describe isotherms at other temperatures as well as isotherms of mixture of carbon dioxide and methane in activated carbon and carbon nanotube at 273 and 300 K. Good agreement between the computed and experimental isotherm data was observed, thus justifying the use of a simple adsorption model.  相似文献

This paper reports a molecular simulation and experimental study on the adsorption and condensation of simple fluids in mesoporous micelle-templated silicas MCM-41, MCM-48, and SBA-15. MCM-41 is described as a regular cylindrical silica nanopore, while SBA-15 is assumed to be made up of cylindrical nanopores that are connected through lateral channels. The 3D-connected topology of MCM-48 is described using a gyroid periodic minimal surface. Argon adsorption at 77 K is calculated for the three materials using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Qualitative comparison with experiments for nitrogen adsorption in mesoporous micelle-templated silicas is made. The adsorption isotherm for SBA-15 resembles that for MCM-41. In particular, capillary condensation and evaporation are not affected by the presence of the connecting lateral channels. In contrast, the argon adsorption isotherm for MCM-48 departs from that for MCM-41 having the same pore size. While condensation in MCM-41 is a one-step process, filling of MCM-48 involves two successive jumps in the adsorbed amounts which correspond to condensation in different domains of the porosity. The condensation pressure for MCM-48 is larger than that for MCM-41. We attribute this result to the morphology of the MCM-48 surface (made up of both concave and convex regions) that differs from that for MCM-41 (concave only). Our results suggest that the pore connectivity affects pore filling when the size of the connections is comparable to that of the nanopores.  相似文献

In this work, the X-ray diffraction structure modeling was employed for analysis of hexagonally ordered large-pore silicas, SBA-15, to determine their pore width independently of adsorption measurements. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms were used to evaluate the relative pressure of capillary condensation in cylindrical mesopores of these materials. This approach allowed us to extend the original Kruk-Jaroniec-Sayari (KJS) relation (Langmuir 1997, 13, 6267) between the pore width and capillary condensation pressure up to 10 nm instead of previously established range from 2 to 6.5 nm for a series of MCM-41 and to improve the KJS pore size analysis of large pore silicas.  相似文献

A method is proposed for the calculation of the distribution functions for the pore size, the adsorption energy, and the fractal dimensionality with due regard to the multicomponent nature of complex adsorbents based on a combined approach, including calculation of the constants of the equations in the approximation of the local adsorption isotherm for individual adsorbents with allowance for their specific characteristics (e.g., the type of pores). The integral equation, in which the kernel is the sum of the local adsorption isotherms with weighting factors determining the accessibility of the various phases in the multicomponent adsorbent, is solved using the method of constrained regularization.  相似文献

The Monte Carlo method is used in its grand ensemble variant in combination with CO(2) experimental isotherm data at low (195.5 K) and high temperatures (at 298 and 308 K, i.e., slightly below and above the CO(2) critical temperature, respectively) to characterize microporous carbons and obtain the corresponding pore size distribution (PSD). Specifically, the CO(2) density inside a single, slit-shaped, graphitic pore of given width is found on the basis of grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations for a predefined temperature and different relative pressures. The simulation results provide useful insights concerning the densification process in the micropores and the structure of the CO(2) molecules packing in the individual pores as the temperature or pressure changes from 195.5 K to ambient or from very low to 70 bar, respectively. Effects of temperature, pore size, quadrupole interactions, and molecule elongation on the local density profile within the pore are examined and discussed. In an additional step, we determine the optimal PSD for which the best match is obtained between computed and measured CO(2) isotherms. Comparisons are made between the PSDs found for the same carbon sample at low and high temperatures and conclusions are drawn concerning the applicability of the method and the reliability of the resulting micropore size distributions. We have measured the adsorption of methane and ethane to high pressure on SBA-2, a structured mesoporous silica composed of spheres connected by narrow channels. The experimental data were analyzed by carrying out Monte Carlo simulations of adsorption in pore structure models of different complexity and then adjusting the parameters of the models to match the Monte Carlo results to the experimental data. We found that a model based on single-sized spherical cavities was inadequate and that it is necessary to explicitly account for the interconnecting channels. Further, we found that despite the basic regularity of the SBA-2 structure, it is necessary to allow for a distribution of the sizes of both the cavities and the channels. These size distributions were obtained by fitting the parameters of the model to the experimental adsorption data, revealing detailed structural information not previously known for this material. The channels were found to be 5-15 A in diameter, while the cavities were 40-50 A in diameter. There is some evidence that the distribution of channel sizes leads to a percolation effect whereby the pore structure is not equally accessible to all adsorptives.  相似文献

Adsorption of C7 hydrocarbons on biporous SBA-15 mesoporous silica   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In our recent studies (Vinh-Thang, H.; Huang, Q.; Eic, M.; Trong-On, D.; Kaliaguine, S. Langmuir 2005, 21, 2051-2057; Vinh-Thang, H.; Huang, Q.; Eic, M.; Trong-On, D.; Kaliaguine, S. Stud. Surf. Sci. Catal. 2005, in press), a series of synthesized SBA-15 materials were characterized using nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms at 77 K and SEM images. In the present paper, four of them (MMS-1-RT, MMS-1-60, MMS-1-80, and MMS-5-80) were further investigated with regard to their equilibrium characteristics using n-heptane and toluene as sorbates by the standard gravimetric technique. SBA-15 materials proved to have a broad pore size distribution within the micropore/small-mesopore range in the walls of their main mesoporous channels. The adsorption capacities for toluene were found to be higher than for n-heptane. The isosteric heats of adsorption, estimated by the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, are also higher for toluene compared to n-heptane. They were found to depend on framework microporosity of the relevant SBA-15 samples. The isosteric heats of adsorption for all sorbates decrease with increased loading and approach the heats of evaporation of the respective sorbate. The adsorption capacities of SBA-15 samples are significantly higher than those of silicalite, i.e., the MFI zeolite silica analogue. In contrast to that, the isosteric heats of adsorption in the mesopore channels of SBA-15 were found to be much smaller. This result also suggests that SBA-15 can potentially be a good candidate for separation of C(7) hydrocarbons.

A plausible model for the structure of non-graphitizing carbon is one which consists of curved, fullerene-like fragments grouped together in a random arrangement. Although this model was proposed several years ago, there have been no attempts to calculate the properties of such a structure. Here, we determine the density, pore size distribution and adsorption properties of a model porous carbon constructed from fullerene-like elements. Using the method proposed recently by Bhattacharya and Gubbins (BG), which was tested in this study for ideal and defective carbon slits, the pore size distributions (PSDs) of the initial model and two related carbon models are calculated. The obtained PSD curves show that two structures are micro-mesoporous (with different ratio of micro/mesopores) and the third is strictly microporous. Using the grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) method, adsorption isotherms of Ar (87 K) are simulated for all the structures. Finally PSD curves are calculated using the Horvath-Kawazoe, non-local density functional theory (NLDFT), Nguyen and Do, and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) approaches, and compared with those predicted by the BG method. This is the first study in which different methods of calculation of PSDs for carbons from adsorption data can be really verified, since absolute (i.e. true) PSDs are obtained using the BG method. This is also the first study reporting the results of computer simulations of adsorption on fullerene-like carbon models.  相似文献
