This paper considers online stochastic reservation problems, where requests come online and must be dynamically allocated to limited resources in order to maximize profit. Multi-knapsack problems with or without overbooking are examples of such online stochastic reservations. The paper studies how to adapt the online stochastic framework and the consensus and regret algorithms proposed earlier to online stochastic reservation systems. On the theoretical side, it presents a constant sub-optimality approximation of multi-knapsack problems, leading to a regret algorithm that evaluates each scenario with a single mathematical programming optimization followed by a small number of dynamic programs for one-dimensional knapsacks. It also proposes several integer programming models for handling cancellations and proves their equivalence. On the experimental side, the paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the regret algorithm on multi-knapsack problems (with and without overbooking) based on the benchmarks proposed earlier.  相似文献

Stochastic programming is the subfield of mathematical programming that considers optimization in the presence of uncertainty. During the last four decades a vast quantity of literature on the subject has appeared. Developments in the theory of computational complexity allow us to establish the theoretical complexity of a variety of stochastic programming problems studied in this literature. Under the assumption that the stochastic parameters are independently distributed, we show that two-stage stochastic programming problems are ♯P-hard. Under the same assumption we show that certain multi-stage stochastic programming problems are PSPACE-hard. The problems we consider are non-standard in that distributions of stochastic parameters in later stages depend on decisions made in earlier stages. The conditions for solving some problems of plastic metal working are essentially stochastic. As a result of this, selection of optimal regimes of the plastic metal-working processes becomes the stochastic optimization problem. The classification and mathematical statements of this problem are proposed. The results of computations for the stochastic optimization of different kinds of regimes for processes of cyclic bending (leveling) for rail R-65 in the maximum rigidity plane of a 6-roll leveler and of upsetting of the cylindrical billet have been proposed. Drilling optimization problems in oilfields are usually formulated and solved by using deterministic mathematical models, in which uncertain (indeterminate) factors or random issues are not taken into consideration. However, it has been widely experienced that random factors (such as those from soil layers, drill bits, and surface equipment) greatly affect the drilling performance. This paper introduces a new stochastic model for describing such random effects. This model, when used to optimization design, is more practical and provides a better characterization for real oilfield situations as compared with other deterministic models, and has been demonstrated to be more efficient in solving real design problems of drilling optimizations.  相似文献

We study the nonlinear inverse problem of estimating stochastic parameters in the fourth-order partial differential equation with random data. The primary focus is on developing a novel stochastic approximation framework for inverse problems consisting of three key components. As a first step, we reformulate the inverse problem into a stochastic convex optimization problem. The second step includes developing a new regularized stochastic extragradient framework for a nonlinear variational inequality, which subsumes the optimality conditions for the optimization formulation of the inverse problem. The third step involves modeling random variables by a Karhunen–Loève type finite-dimensional noise representation, allowing the direct and the inverse problems to be conveniently discretized. We show that the regularized extragradient methods are strongly convergent in a Hilbert space setting, and we also provide several auxiliary results for the inverse problem, including Lipschitz continuity and a derivative characterization of the solution map. We provide the outcome of computational experiments to estimate stochastic and deterministic parameters. The numerical results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the developed framework and validate stochastic approximation as an effective method for stochastic inverse problems.  相似文献

A class of stochastic optimization problems is analyzed that cannot be solved by deterministic and standard stochastic approximation methods. We consider risk-control problems, optimization of stochastic networks and discrete event systems, screening irreversible changes, and pollution control. The results of Ermoliev et al. are extended to the case of stochastic systems and general constraints. It is shown that the concept of stochastic mollifier gradient leads to easily implementable computational procedures for systems with Lipschitz and discontinuous objective functions. New optimality conditions are formulated for designing stochastic search procedures for constrained optimization of discontinuous systems.  相似文献

We consider stochastic optimization problems where risk-aversion is expressed by a stochastic ordering constraint. The constraint requires that a random vector depending on our decisions stochastically dominates a given benchmark random vector. We identify a suitable multivariate stochastic order and describe its generator in terms of von Neumann–Morgenstern utility functions. We develop necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality and duality relations for optimization problems with this constraint. Assuming convexity we show that the Lagrange multipliers corresponding to dominance constraints are elements of the generator of this order, thus refining and generalizing earlier results for optimization under univariate stochastic dominance constraints. Furthermore, we obtain necessary conditions of optimality for non-convex problems under additional smoothness assumptions.  相似文献

We consider two-stage risk-averse stochastic optimization problems with a stochastic ordering constraint on the recourse function. Two new characterizations of the increasing convex order relation are provided. They are based on conditional expectations and on integrated quantile functions: a counterpart of the Lorenz function. We propose two decomposition methods to solve the problems and prove their convergence. Our methods exploit the decomposition structure of the risk-neutral two-stage problems and construct successive approximations of the stochastic ordering constraints. Numerical results confirm the efficiency of the methods.  相似文献

Many economic and financial applications lead (from the mathematical point of view) to deterministic optimization problems depending on a probability measure. These problems can be static (one stage), dynamic with finite (multistage) or infinite horizon, single objective or multiobjective. We focus on one-stage case in multiobjective setting. Evidently, well known results from the deterministic optimization theory can be employed in the case when the “underlying” probability measure is completely known. The assumption of a complete knowledge of the probability measure is fulfilled very seldom. Consequently, we have mostly to analyze the mathematical models on the data base to obtain a stochastic estimate of the corresponding “theoretical” characteristics. However, the investigation of these estimates has been done mostly in one-objective case. In this paper we focus on the investigation of the relationship between “characteristics” obtained on the base of complete knowledge of the probability measure and estimates obtained on the (above mentioned) data base, mostly in the multiobjective case. Consequently we obtain also the relationship between analysis (based on the data) of the economic process characteristics and “real” economic process. To this end the results of the deterministic multiobjective optimization theory and the results obtained for stochastic one objective problems will be employed.  相似文献

We introduce a new preference relation in the space of random variables, which we call robust stochastic dominance. We consider stochastic optimization problems where risk-aversion is expressed by a robust stochastic dominance constraint. These are composite semi-infinite optimization problems with constraints on compositions of measures of risk and utility functions. We develop necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality for such optimization problems in the convex case. In the nonconvex case, we derive necessary conditions of optimality under additional smoothness assumptions of some mappings involved in the problem.  相似文献

In this paper we discuss scenario reduction methods for risk-averse stochastic optimization problems. Scenario reduction techniques have received some attention in the literature and are used by practitioners, as such methods allow for an approximation of the random variables in the problem with a moderate number of scenarios, which in turn make the optimization problem easier to solve. The majority of works for scenario reduction are designed for classical risk-neutral stochastic optimization problems; however, it is intuitive that in the risk-averse case one is more concerned with scenarios that correspond to high cost. By building upon the notion of effective scenarios recently introduced in the literature, we formalize that intuitive idea and propose a scenario reduction technique for stochastic optimization problems where the objective function is a Conditional Value-at-Risk. Numerical results presented with problems from the literature illustrate the performance of the method and indicate the cases where we expect it to perform well.  相似文献

Stochastic dominance relations are well studied in statistics, decision theory and economics. Recently, there has been significant interest in introducing dominance relations into stochastic optimization problems as constraints. In the discrete case, stochastic optimization models involving second order stochastic dominance constraints can be solved by linear programming. However, problems involving first order stochastic dominance constraints are potentially hard due to the non-convexity of the associated feasible regions. In this paper we consider a mixed 0–1 linear programming formulation of a discrete first order constrained optimization model and present a relaxation based on second order constraints. We derive some valid inequalities and restrictions by employing the probabilistic structure of the problem. We also generate cuts that are valid inequalities for the disjunctive relaxations arising from the underlying combinatorial structure of the problem by applying the lift-and-project procedure. We describe three heuristic algorithms to construct feasible solutions, based on conditional second order constraints, variable fixing, and conditional value at risk. Finally, we present numerical results for several instances of a real world portfolio optimization problem. This research was supported by the NSF awards DMS-0603728 and DMI-0354678.  相似文献

We consider a parametric stochastic quasi-variational inequality problem (SQVIP for short) where the underlying normal cone is defined over the solution set of a parametric stochastic cone system. We investigate the impact of variation of the probability measure and the parameter on the solution of the SQVIP. By reformulating the SQVIP as a natural equation and treating the orthogonal projection over the solution set of the parametric stochastic cone system as an optimization problem, we effectively convert stability of the SQVIP into that of a one stage stochastic program with stochastic cone constraints. Under some moderate conditions, we derive Hölder outer semicontinuity and continuity of the solution set against the variation of the probability measure and the parameter. The stability results are applied to a mathematical program with stochastic semidefinite constraints and a mathematical program with SQVIP constraints.  相似文献

The introduction of uncertainty to mathematical programs greatly increases the size of the resulting optimization problems. Specialized methods that exploit program structures and advances in computer technology promise to overcome the computational complexity of certain classes of stochastic programs. In this paper we examine the progressive hedging algorithm for solving multi-scenario generalized networks. We present computational results demonstrating the effect of various internal tactics on the algorithm's performance. In practical problem situations data are usually inherently unreliable. A mathematical representation of uncertainty leads to stochastic optimization problems. In this paper the complexity of stochastic combinatorial optimization problems is discussed. Surprisingly, certain stochastic versions of NP-hard determinstic combinatorial problems appear to be solvable in polynomial time.  相似文献

In this paper a condition number for linear-quadratic two-stage stochastic optimization problems is introduced as the Lipschitz modulus of the multifunction assigning to a (discrete) probability distribution the solution set of the problem. Being the outer norm of the Mordukhovich coderivative of this multifunction, the condition number can be estimated from above explicitly in terms of the problem data by applying appropriate calculus rules. Here, a chain rule for the extended partial second-order subdifferential recently proved by Mordukhovich and Rockafellar plays a crucial role. The obtained results are illustrated for the example of two-stage stochastic optimization problems with simple recourse.  相似文献

Planning a cost‐efficient monitoring policy of stochastic processes arises from many industrial problems. We formulate a simple discrete‐time monitoring problem of continuous‐time stochastic processes with its applications to several industrial problems. A key in our model is a doubling trick of the variables, with which we can construct an algorithm to solve the problem. The cost‐efficient monitoring policy balancing between the observation cost and information loss is governed by an optimality equation of a fixed point type, which is solvable with an iterative algorithm based on the Feynman‐Kac formula. This is a new linkage between monitoring problems and mathematical sciences. We show regularity results of the optimization problem and present a numerical algorithm for its approximation. A problem having model ambiguity is presented as well. The presented model is applied to problems of environment, ecology, and energy, having qualitatively different target stochastic processes with each other.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze market equilibrium models with random aspects that lead to stochastic complementarity problems. While the models presented depict energy markets, the results are believed to be applicable to more general stochastic complementarity problems. The contribution is the development of new heuristic, scenario reduction approaches that iteratively work towards solving the full, extensive form, stochastic market model. The methods are tested on three representative models and supporting numerical results are provided as well as derived mathematical bounds.  相似文献

SPT: a stochastic tunneling algorithm for global optimization   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A stochastic approach to solving unconstrained continuous-function global optimization problems is presented. It builds on the tunneling approach to deterministic optimization presented by Barhen and co-workers (Bahren and Protopopescu, in: State of the Art in Global Optimization, Kluwer, 1996; Barhen et al., Floudas and Pardalos (eds.), TRUST: a deterministic algorithm for global optimization, 1997) by combining a series of local descents with stochastic searches. The method uses a rejection-based stochastic procedure to locate new local minima descent regions and a fixed Lipschitz-like constant to reject unpromising regions in the search space, thereby increasing the efficiency of the tunneling process. The algorithm is easily implemented in low-dimensional problems and scales easily to large problems. It is less effective without further heuristics in these latter cases, however. Several improvements to the basic algorithm which make use of approximate estimates of the algorithms parameters for implementation in high-dimensional problems are also discussed. Benchmark results are presented, which show that the algorithm is competitive with the best previously reported global optimization techniques. A successful application of the approach to a large-scale seismology problem of substantial computational complexity using a low-dimensional approximation scheme is also reported.  相似文献
