We study a map of osculating elements of an affine Cayley- Klein (CK-) plane into the Lie algebraA 4(2) of the aequiform transformationsA 4(2) of the given plane. If we use the real projective spaceP 3() overA 4(2) each osculating element defines a straight line inP 3(). In the first part of this paper this map is studied in detail. In the second part we study second order properties of one- parameter motions and their corresponding properties in the Lie algebraA 4(2). This is done by considering the analogen to the formula of EULERSAVARY in the image spaceP 3() overA 4(2).

For any algebraA let(A) be the set of partial automorphisms (isomorphisms between subalgebras). With the natural multiplication it is an inductive groupoid in the sense of Ehresmann.(A) is complete iff every subset of(A) which is compatible with the semi-ordering has an upper bound. The fact, whether(A) is complete or not, depends on the defining operations ofA. For every direct familyF = (, (A ) ,(), , of algebras such that all ,, with are one-to-one functions, the direct limit is complete iff all(A) are complete. We give some theorems on the decomposition of inductive groupoids, and employ them in proving the completeness of(A) to variousA.In particular, we obtain that, in case whenG is a finite group,(G) is complete iffG is either cyclic or direct product of a noncyclic group of order 4 and a cyclic group of odd order. For finite acyclic ringsR and finite fieldsK the inductive groupoids(R) and(K) are complete.Further we deal with the question, to what extent algebras are determined by their inductive groupoids. (An algebraA of a classS is defined by(A) iff, for any algebraB of the classS, isomorphism between(A) and(B) implies isomorphism betweenA andB.) Particular attention is paid to finite groups. In general, algebras of classesS are not defined within the classS by their inductive groupoids.

Let t be the flow (parametrized with respect to arc length) of a smooth unit vector field v on a closed Riemannian manifold M n , whose orbits are geodesics. Then the (n-1)-plane field normal to v, v, is invariant under d t and, for each x M, we define a smooth real function x (t) : (1 + i (t)), where the i(t) are the eigenvalues of AA T, A being the matrix (with respect to orthonormal bases) of the non-singular linear map d2t , restricted to v at the point x -t M n.Among other things, we prove the Theorem (Theorem II, below). Assume v is also volume preserving and that x ' (t) 0 for all x M and real t; then, if x t : M M is weakly missng for some t, it is necessary that vx 0 at all x M.

The imaginary powersA it of a closed linear operatorA, with inverse, in a Banach spaceX are considered as aC 0-group {exp(itlogA);t R} of bounded linear operators onX, with generatori logA. Here logA is defined as the closure of log(1+A) – log(1+A –1). LetA be a linearm-sectorial operator of typeS(tan ), 0(/2), in a Hilbert spaceX. That is, |Im(Au, u)| (tan )Re(Au, u) foru D(A). Then ±ilog(1+A) ism-accretive inX andilog(1+A) is the generator of aC 0-group {(1+A) it ;t R} of bounded imaginary powers, satisfying the estimate (1+A) it exp(|t|),t R. In particular, ifA is invertible, then ±ilogA ism-accretive inX, where logA is exactly given by logA=log(1+A)–log(1+A –1), and {A it;t R} forms aC 0-group onX, with the estimate A it exp(|t|),t R. This yields a slight improvement of the Heinz-Kato inequality.

A survey of known results and additional new ones on Knaster's problem: on the standard sphere Sn–1Rn find configurations of points A1, , Ak, such that for any continuous map fSn–1Rm one can find a rotation a of the sphere Sn–1 such that f(a(A1)==f(a(Ak)) and some problems closely connected with it. We study the connection of Knaster's problem with equivariant mappings, with Dvoretsky's theorem on the existence of an almost spherical section of a multidimensional convex body, and we also study the set {a S0(n)f(a(A1))==f(a(Ak))} of solutions of Knaster's problem for a fixed configuration of points A1, , AkSn–1 and a map fSn–1Rm in general position. Unsolved problems are posed.Translated from Zapiski Nauchnykh Seminarov Leningradskogo Otdeleniya Matematicheskogo Instituta im. V. A. Steklova AN SSSR, Vol. 167, pp. 169–178, 1987.

Gabbay and Pitts observed that the Fraenkel–Mostowski model of set-theory supports useful notions of name-abstraction and fresh-name. In order to understand their work in a more general setting we introduce the notions of -units and -relations in a regular category D. A -relation is given by a functor A # (-):DD and we show that in the case that D is a topos then A # (-) has a right adjoint [A](-) that can be thought of as an object of abstractions. We also explore the existence of a right adjoint to [A](-) and relate it to the name swapping operations considered as fundamental by Gabbay and Pitts. We present many examples of categories where this notions occur and we relate the results here with Pitts' Nominal Logic.

We prove a local limit theorem (LLT) on Cramer-type large deviations for sums S V = t V ( t ), where t , t Z , 1, is a Markov Gaussian random field, V Z , and is a bounded Borel function. We get an estimate from below for the variance of S V and construct two classes of functions , for which the LLT of large deviations holds.

Let be a Guelfand measure (cf. [A, B]) on a locally compact groupG DenoteL 1 (G)=*L 1(G)* the commutative Banach algebra associated to . We show thatL 1 (G) is semi-simple and give a characterization of the closed ideals ofL 1 (G). Using the -spherical Fourier transform, we characterize all linear bounded operators inL 1 (G) which are invariants by -translations (i.e. such that 1(( x f) )=( x ((f)) for eachxG andfL 1 (G); where x f(y)=f(xy); x,y G). WhenG is compact, we study the algebraL 1 (G) and obtain results analogous to ones obtained for the commutative case: we show thatL 1 (G) is regular, all closed sets of its Guelfand spectrum are sets of synthesis and establish theorems of harmonic synthesis for functions inL p (G) (p=1,2 or +).

Analysis is presented for the heat transfer performance of square ducts with internal fins from each wall in the case of combined free and forced convection by fully developed laminar flow. Numerical results are obtained for the Nusselt number and the pressure drop parameter for various values of finlengths and heat source parameter. For various values of Rayleigh numbers, the Nusselt number increases with the increase in finlength and decreases with the increase in heat source parameter.

A closed subset E of the unit circumference T is said to be a peak set for the analytic Hölder class A, 0 < < 1 there exists a functionf,fA such that f¦E1 and ¦f(z)¦<1 for. It is shown that the set E is a peak set of the algebra A if and only if there exists a nonnegative Borel measure on T such that the function coincides almost everywhere with a function of the Hölder class , equal to zero on E. A sufficient condition in order that a closed set E should belong to the family of peak sets is obtained.Translated from Zapiski Nauchnykh Seminarov Leningradskogo Otdeleniya Matematicheskogo Instituta im. Let A be a p-group acting on a finite Abelian p-group P. We give a necessary and sufficient condition on an A-irreducible decomposition of 1(P) = i1Ui for the existence of an A-indecomposable decomposition of P = i1Ri such that 1(Ri) = Ui for all i I. We consider the method for constrained convex optimization in a Hilbert space, consisting of a step in the direction opposite to an k -subgradient of the objective at a current iterate, followed by an orthogonal projection onto the feasible set. The normalized stepsizes k are exogenously given, satisfying k=0 k = , k=0 k 2 < , and k is chosen so that k k for some > 0. We prove that the sequence generated in this way is weakly convergent to a minimizer if the problem has solutions, and is unbounded otherwise. Among the features of our convergence analysis, we mention that it covers the nonsmooth case, in the sense that we make no assumption of differentiability off, and much less of Lipschitz continuity of its gradient. Also, we prove weak convergence of the whole sequence, rather than just boundedness of the sequence and optimality of its weak accumulation points, thus improving over all previously known convergence results. We present also convergence rate results. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. The Bass–Heller–Swan–Farrell–Hsiang–Siebenmann decomposition of the Whitehead group K 1(A[z,z-1]) of a twisted Laurent polynomial extension A[z,z-1] of a ring A is generalized to a decomposition of the Whitehead group K 1(A((z))) of a twisted Novikov ring of power series A((z))=A[[z]][z-1]. The decomposition involves a summand W1(A, ) which is an Abelian quotient of the multiplicative group W(A,) of Witt vectors 1+a1z+a2z2+ ··· A[[z]]. An example is constructed to show that in general the natural surjection W(A, )ab W1(A, ) is not an isomorphism.

A distribution is said to have regularly varying tail with index – (0) if lim x(kx,)/(x,)=k for each k>0. Let X and Y be independent positive random variables with distributions and , respecitvely. The distribution of product XY is called Mellin–Stieltjes convolution (MS convolution) of and . It is known that D() (the class of distributions on (0,) that have regularly varying tails with index –) is closed under MS convolution. This paper deals with decomposition problem of distributions in D() related to MS convolution. A representation of a regularly varying function F of the following form is investigated: F(x)= k=0 n–1 b k f(a k x), where f is a measurable function and a and b k (k=1,...,n–1) are real constants. A criterion is given for these constants in order that f be regularly varying. This criterion is applicable to show that there exist two distributions and such that neither nor belongs to D() (>0) and their MS convolution belongs to D().

Summary Let P be a Markov operator on L (X, , m). Theorem 1: (i) P is weakly mixing (ii) For every fL there is a sequence {nt} of density 1 such that all w *-cluster points of are constants (iii) For every fL there is a {kj} with w *-convergent to a constant. Theorem 2: If P is induced by a non-singular transformation , P is weakly mixing For every A, { –n(A)} has a remotely trivial subsequence. The existence of a finite invariant measure is not required in these results.

Given aZ n+1-periodic variational principle onR n+1 we look for solutionsu:R n R minimizing the variational integral with respect to compactly supported variations. To every vector R n we consider a subset of solutions which have an average slope when averaging overR n. The minimal average action A() is defined by the average value of the variational integral given by a solution with average slope . Our main result is:A is differentiable at if and only if the set is totally ordered (in the natural sense). In case that is not totally ordered,A is differentiable at in some direction R n{0} if and only if is orthogonal to the subspace defined by the rational dependency of . Assuming that the ith component of is rational with denominator si N in lowest terms, we show: The difference of right- and left-sided derivative in the ith standard unit direction is bounded by const · .

Summary Considerf+ ff+ (1–f2)+ f=0 together with the boundary conditionsf(0)=f(0)=0,f ()=1. If=–1,>0, arbitrary there is at least one solution which satisfies 0<f<1 on (0, ). By the additional conditionf>0 on (0, ) or, alternately 0<1, the uniqueness of the solution is demonstrated.If=1,<0, arbitrary the existence of solutions for which –1<f<0 in some initial interval (0,t) and satisfying generallyf>1 is established. In both problems, bounds forf (0) and qualitative behavior of the solutions are shown.
