Important aspects of the electrochemical reduction of a series of substituted arene sulfonyl chlorides are investigated. An interesting autocatalytic mechanism is encountered where the starting material is reduced both at the electrode and through homogeneous electron transfer from the resulting sulfinate anion. This is due to the homogenous electron transfer from the two-electron reduction produced anion (arene sulfinate) to the parent arene sulfonyl chloride. As a result, the reduction process and hence the generated final products depend on both the concentration of the substrate and the scan rate. A change is also observed in the reductive cleavage mechanism as a function of the substituent on the phenyl ring of the arene sulfonyl chloride. With 4-cyano and 4-nitrophenyl sulfonyl chlorides a "sticky" dissociative ET mechanism takes place where a concerted ET mechanism leads to the formation of a radical/anion cluster before decomposition. With other substituents (MeO, Me, H, Cl, and F) a "classical" dissociative ET is followed, where the ET and bond cleavage are simultaneous. The dissociative electron transfer theory, as well as its extension to the case of strong in-cage interactions between the produced fragments, along with gas phase chemical quantum calculations results helped us to rationalize both the observed change in the ET mechanism and the occurrence of the "sticky" dissociative ET mechanism. The radical/anion pair interactions have been determined both in solution as well as in the gas phase. The study also shows that despite the low magnitude of in-cage interactions in acetonitrile compared to the gas phase their existence strongly affects the dynamics of the involved reactions. It also shows that, as expected, these interactions are reinforced by the existence of strong electron-withdrawing substituents. The occurrence of an autocatalytic process and the existence of the radical/anion interaction may explain the differences previously observed in the reduction of these compounds in different media.  相似文献

Dissociative electron capture dynamics of halocarbon absorbed on water cluster anion, caused by internal electron transfer from the water trimer anion to the halocarbon, have been investigated by means of the direct density functional theory (DFT)-molecular dynamics (MD) method. The CF(2)Cl(2) molecule and a water trimer anion e(-)(H(2)O)(3) were used as a halocarbon and a trapped electron, respectively. First, the structure of trapped electron state, expressed by e(-)(H(2)O)(3)-CF(2)Cl(2), was fully optimized. The excess electron was trapped by a dipole moment of water trimer. Next, initial geometries were randomly generated around the equilibrium point of the trapped electron state, and then trajectories were run. The direct DFT-MD calculations showed that the spin density distribution of excess electron is gradually changed from the water cluster (trapped electron state) to CF(2)Cl(2) as a function of time. Immediately, the Cl(-) ion was dissociated from CF(2)Cl(2)(-) adsorbed on the water cluster. The reaction was schematically expressed by e(-)(H(2)O)(3)-CF(2)Cl(2)-->[(H(2)O)(3)-->-CF(2)CL(2)](-) --> (H(2O)(3) + CF(2)CL + CI(-) (I) where [(H(2)O)(3)-CF(2)Cl(2)](-) indicates a transient intermediate state in which the excess electron is widely distributed on both the water cluster and CF(2)Cl(2). The mechanism of the electron capture of halocarbon from the trapped electron in water ice was discussed on the basis of the theoretical results. Also, the dynamics feature was compared with those of the direct electron capture reactions of CF(2)Cl(2) and CF(2)Cl(2)-(H(2)O)(3), i.e. e(-) + CF(2)Cl(2), and e(-) + CF(2)Cl(2)-(H(2)O)(3), investigated in our previous paper [Tachikawa and Abe, J. Chem. Phys., 2007, 126, 194310].  相似文献

Transient 1:1 precursor complexes for intermolecular self-exchange between various organic electron donors (D) and their paramagnetic cation radicals (D+*), as well as between different electron acceptors (A) paired with their anion radicals (A-*), are spectrally (UV-NIR) observed and structurally (X-ray) identified as the cofacial (pi-stacked) associates [D, D+*] and [A-*, A], respectively. Mulliken-Hush (two-state) analysis of their diagnostic intervalence bands affords the electronic coupling elements (HDA), which together with the Marcus reorganization energies (lambda) from the NIR spectral data are confirmed by molecular-orbital computations. The HDA values are found to be a sensitive function of the bulky substituents surrounding the redox centers. As a result, the steric modulation of the donor/acceptor separation (rDA) leads to distinctive electron-transfer rates between sterically hindered donors/acceptors and their more open (unsubstituted) parents. The latter is discussed in the context of a continuous series of outer- and inner-sphere mechanisms for organic electron-transfer processes in a manner originally formulated by Taube and co-workers for inorganic (coordination) donor/acceptor dyads-with conciliatory attention paid to traditional organic versus inorganic concepts.  相似文献

The kinetics of electron transfer for the reactions cis-[Ru(IV)(bpy)2(py)(O)]2+ + H+ + [Os(II)(bpy)3]2+ <==> cis-[Ru(III)(bpy)2(py)(OH)]2+ + [Os(III)(bpy)3]3+ and cis-[Ru(III)(bpy)2(py)(OH)]2+ + H+ + [Os(II)(bpy)3]2+ <==> cis-[Ru(II)(bpy)2(py)(H2O)]2+ + [Os(III)(bpy)3]3+ have been studied in both directions by varying the pH from 1 to 8. The kinetics are complex but can be fit to a double "square scheme" involving stepwise electron and proton transfer by including the disproportionation equilibrium, 2cis-[Ru(III)(bpy)2(py)(OH)]2+ <==> (3 x 10(3) M(-1) x s(-1) forward, 2.1 x 10(5) M(-1) x s(-1) reverse) cis-[Ru(IV)(bpy)2(py)(O)]2+ + cis-[Ru(II)(bpy)2(py)(H2O)]2+. Electron transfer is outer-sphere and uncoupled from proton transfer. The kinetic study has revealed (1) pH-dependent reactions where the pH dependence arises from the distribution between acid and base forms and not from variations in the driving force; (2) competing pathways involving initial electron transfer or initial proton transfer whose relative importance depends on pH; (3) a significant inhibition to outer-sphere electron transfer for the Ru(IV)=O2+/Ru(III)-OH2+ couple because of the large difference in pK(a) values between Ru(IV)=OH3+ (pK(a) < 0) and Ru(III)-OH2+ (pK(a) > 14); and (4) regions where proton loss from cis-[Ru(II)(bpy)2(py)(H2O)]2+ or cis-[Ru(III)(bpy)2(py)(OH)]2+ is rate limiting. The difference in pK(a) values favors more complex pathways such as proton-coupled electron transfer.  相似文献

Protonated peptides containing histidine or arginine residues and a free carboxyl group (His-Ala-Ile, His-Ala-Leu, Ala-His-Leu, Ala-Ala-His-Ala-Leu, His-Ala-Ala-Ala-Leu, and Arg-Ala-Ile) form stable anions upon collisional double electron transfer from Cs atoms at 50 keV kinetic energies. This unusual behavior is explained by hidden rearrangements occurring in peptide radical intermediates formed by transfer of the first electron. The rearrangements occur on a approximately 120 ns time scale determined by the radical flight time. Analysis of the conformational space for (His-Ala-Ile + H)(+) precursor cations identified two major conformer groups, 1a(+)-1m(+) and 5a(+)-5h(+) , that differed in their H-bonding patterns and were calculated to collectively account for 39% and 60%, respectively, of the gas-phase ions. One-electron reduction in 1a(+) and 5a(+) triggers exothermic hydrogen atom migration from the terminal COOH group onto the His imidazole ring, forming imidazoline radical intermediates. The intermediate from 5a is characterized by its charge and spin distribution as a novel cation radical-COO(-) salt bridge. The intermediate from 1a undergoes spontaneous isomerization by imidazoline N-H migration, re-forming the COOH group and accomplishing exothermic isomerization of the initial (3H)-imidazole radical to a (2H)-imidazole radical. An analogous unimolecular isomerization in simple imidazole and histidine radicals requires activation energies of 150 kJ mol(-1), and its occurrence in 1a and 5a is due to the promoting effect of the proximate COOH group. The rearrangement is substantially reduced in Ala-Leu-His due to an unfavorable spatial orientation of the imidazole and COOH groups and precluded in the absence of a free carboxyl group in His-Ala-Leu amide. In contrast to His-Ala-Ile and Arg-Ala-Ile, protonated Lys-Ala-Ile does not produce stable anions upon double electron transfer. The radical trapping properties of histidine residues are discussed.  相似文献

Electrons and protons are the main actors in play in proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions, which are fundamental in many biological (i.e., photosynthesis and enzymatic reactions) and electrochemical processes. The mechanism, energetics and kinetics of PCET reactions are strongly controlled by the coupling between the transferred electrons and protons. Concerted PCET reactions are classified according to the electronical adiabaticity degree of the process. To discriminate among different mechanisms, we propose a new analysis based on the use of electron density based indexes. We choose, as test case, the 3-Methylphenoxyl/phenol system in two different conformations to show how the proposed analysis is a suitable tool to discriminate between the different degree of adiabaticity of PCET processes. The very low computational cost of this procedure is extremely promising to analyze and provide evidences of PCET mechanisms ruling the reactivity of many biological and catalytic systems.  相似文献

The infrared absorption of mixtures of dimethyl ether and hydrogen halide (HX) in nitrogen at 13 K display relatively narrow bands in the range 650–800 cm−1 with an isotopic ratio νHD larger than 1.4 and weakly halogen dependent; these features are assigned to the antisymmetric O…H…O stretching within the [(CH3)2 O…H…O(CH3)2]+X ion pair. With HI—ether mixtures, the intensity of the 660 cm−1 band decreases under infrared irradiation of the matrix, which might be due to the transfer of the proton back to the I anion.  相似文献

The methods of analysis of the statistical ensembles of trapping sites, before and after electron localization, for electrons in disordered media are surveyed. The review covers the computer-search methods for pre-existing traps in polar matrices, random field theory of disordered polar matrices and the path integral simulations of solvated electron. The common picture provided by all these methods is emphasized: the solvated electron is a unique in chemistry statistical species characterized by statistical distributions of the structural parameters, energy states, reactivity, etc. The numerical examples are provided by the simulations of the trapping sites and the solvated electron in liquid methanol.  相似文献

A pump-probe spectroscopic study of photoinduced forward electron transfer and geminate recombination between donors and acceptors located in the head group regions of micelles is presented. The hole donor is octadecyl-rhodamine B (ODRB) and the hole acceptor is N,N-dimethyl-aniline (DMA). The experiments are conducted as a function of the DMA concentration in the dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles. In spite of the fact that the absorptions of both the ODRB radical and ground state bleach spectrally overlap with the ODRB excited state absorption, a procedure that makes it possible to determine the geminate recombination dynamics is presented. These experiments are the first to measure the dynamics of geminate recombination in micelles, and the experiments have two orders of magnitude better time resolution than previous studies of forward transfer. The experimental data are compared to statistical mechanics theoretical calculations of both the forward transfer and the geminate recombination. The theory includes important aspects of the topology of the micelle and the diffusion of the donor-acceptors in the micelle head group region. A semiquantitative but nonquantitative agreement between theory and experiments is achieved.  相似文献

When a good leaving group is present in the heteroaromatic azadiene, reaction with 2-aminopyrroles occurs by substitution by addition-elimination instead of cycloaddition. This novel reaction is sensitive to steric effects and takes place in 2-amino-1-methylpyrrole at C-5 and the exo amino group but at C-3 in 2-amino-1-t-butylpyrrole.  相似文献

The potential energy surface of acetylsalicylic acid, aspirin, has been explored at the RHF/6-31G* and B3LYP/6-31G* levels, and single-point calculations were performed at levels up to B3LYP/6-311G**//B3LYP/6-31G*. All conformational isomers have been located, the thermochemical functions have been computed, and relative energies and free enthalpies were determined. The conformational space of aspirin is spanned by three internal coordinates, and these are the carboxylic acid C-O conformation (s-trans preferred by about 7 kcal/mol), the C-COOH conformation (Z preferred unless there are H-bonding opportunities), and the ester C-O conformation (s-trans preferred by about 4 kcal/mol). There are nine aspirin isomers since one of the conformers realizes hydrogen-bonding structure isomerism as well. Neighboring group interactions are discussed with reference to the intrinsic properties of benzoic acid and phenyl acetate. The intrinsic conformational preference energies for benzoic acid and phenyl acetate are not additive. The acid s-trans preference energies differ by as much as 9 kcal/mol depending on the Ph-COOH and ester conformations. Similarly, the E-preference energies about the Ph-COOH bond vary by as much as 6 kcal/mol depending on the ester conformation. The structural discussion suggests an overall ortho repulsion between the functional groups in all aspirin isomers including the intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded isomers. The isodesmic reaction between the most stable conformers of benzoic acid and phenyl acetate to form aspirin and benzene is found to be endothermic by 2.7 kcal/mol and provides compelling evidence for and a quantitative measure of ortho repulsion. The ortho repulsion of 2.7 kcal/mol is a lower limit, and the ortho repulsion can increase to as much as 6 kcal/mol in some aspirin isomers.  相似文献

The ultrafast ground state recovery (GSR) dynamics of the radical cation of perylene, Pe(*+), generated upon bimolecular photoinduced electron transfer in acetonitrile, has been investigated using pump-pump-probe spectroscopy. With 1,4-dicyanobenzene as electron acceptor, the free ion yield is substantial and the GSR dynamics of Pe(*+) was found to depend on the time delay between the first and second pump pulses, Deltat(12), i.e., on the "age" of the ion. At short Deltat(12), the GSR dynamics is biphasic, and at Deltat(12) larger than about 500 ps, it becomes exponential with a time constant around 3 ps. With trans-1,2-dicyanoethylene as acceptor, the free ion yield is essentially zero and the GSR dynamics of Pe(*+) remains biphasic independently of Deltat(12). The change of dynamics observed with 1,4-dicyanobenzene is ascribed to the transition from paired to free solvated ion, because in the pair, the excited ion has an additional decay channel to the ground state, i.e., charge recombination followed by charge separation. The rate constants deduced from the analysis of these GSR dynamics are all fully consistent with this hypothesis.  相似文献

The electrochemical one-electron reduction of tert-nitrobutane in N,N'-dimethylformamide is a typical reaction, which has been shown to follow the quadratic model of outersphere electron transfer. The variation of the standard rate constant with temperature allows a separate determination of the reorganization energy and of the pre-exponential factor. The value found for the former is in agreement with independent estimates of the solvent and intramolecular reorganization energies. The value of the latter, significantly larger than the collision frequency, implies that the reaction starts to take place before close contact with the electrode surface.  相似文献
