Experimental observations of diocotron wave echoes on a magnetized electron column are reported, representing Kelvin wave echoes on a rotating near-ideal fluid. The echoes occur by reversal of an inviscid wave damping process, and the phase-space mixing and unmixing are directly imaged. The basic echo characteristics agree with a simple nonlinear ballistic theory. At late times, the echo is degraded, and the maximal observed echo times agree with a theory of electron-electron collisions acting on separately evolving velocity classes.  相似文献

Progress in the theory of the electrical conductivity and other ordinary transport properties of liquid metals since 1961 is reviewed. After a brief account of the basic nearly-free-electron diffraction formula, the quantitative comparison of this formula with experiment is discussed.

For the alkali metals, the agreement is adequate, given the uncertainty of the pseudopotentials, although there is controversy about the calculation of the temperature coefficient of ρ L. To explain the observed volume dependence of ρ L, and the thermoelectric power, it also seems necessary to allow for the variation of the pseudopotential with the positions of the Fermi level and the core levels relative to the bottom of the conduction band.

Quantitative results for the noble and polyvalent metals are meagre, and although calculations of ρ L for Al and Zn are in excellent agreement with experiment there may be other cases where the basic formula is not adequate. The general question of the structure and convergence of the perturbation series for ρ L is discussed, and it is suggested that corrections for higher order terms can be minimized by making the pseudopotential as near as possible to the t-matrix of an ion.

The anomalous properties of Hg are then discussed, in the light of the work of Mott (1966). In this connection it is shown that Edwards' formula (1962) for ρ L, in which the Fermi velocity, v F, is taken to be that of a free electron, ?k F/m, despite deviations from the free-electron curve for ?(k), can be derived by using the expectation value of the current operator in place of e v F in the Boltzmann equation. This modification of the elementary theory allows the Hall constant of a liquid metal to deviate from 1/nec, as found experimentally.  相似文献

In the formation of vortical crystal structures of electrons, the distribution of background electrons works as a “cooler” of randomly moving, intense vortices. By using RF plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, amorphous carbon films were grown in pure methane plasma. Field emission of the films were examined as a function of substrate temperature. It was found that the emission current from the samples prepared at substrate temperatures higher than 600 °C were considerably improved. According to the results by Raman spectroscopy, growth of graphite crystallites were promoted with high substrate temperatures. Moreover, the surface morphology was abruptly changed at high substrate temperatures over 600 °C. We discuss the field emission characteristics of the amorphous carbon films with regard to the structural features and the surface morphology.  相似文献

A magnetized, low-β plasma in pure toroidal configuration is formed and extensively studied with ion mass as control parameter. Xenon, krypton and argon plasmas are formed at a fixed toroidal magnetic field of 0.024 T, with a peak density of ∼1011 cm−3, ∼4 × 1010 cm −3 and ∼2 × 1010 cm −3 respectively. The experimental investigation of time-averaged plasma parameter reveals that their profiles remain insensitive to ion mass and suggests that saturated slab equilibrium is obtained. Low-frequency (LF) coherent fluctuations (ω < ω ci) are observed and identified as flute modes. Here ω ci represents ion cyclotron frequency. Our results indicate that these modes get reduced with ion mass. The frequency of the fluctuating mode decreases with increase in the ion mass. Further, an attempt has been made to discuss the theory of flute modes to understand the relevance of some of our experimental observations.  相似文献

Quasiballistic electron transport in three-dimensional microconstrictions in a longitudinal magnetic field is studied. The case where the quantization of the conductance is destroyed by an impurity located in the microconstriction is investigated. The transmission coefficients and a formula for the conductance of such a microconstriction are found. It is shown that the dependence of the conductance G(E) on the electron energy has kinks at the threshold of the steps for which impurity scattering is strong. These kinks contain a pronounced vertical segment of the curve G(E).  相似文献

The quantum dynamics of carriers bound to helical tube surfaces is investigated in a thin-layer quantization scheme. By numerically solving the open-boundary Schrödinger equation in curvilinear coordinates, geometric effect on the coherent transmission spectra is analysed in the case of single propagating mode as well as multimode. It is shown that, the coiling endows the helical nanotube with different transport properties from a bent cylindrical surface. Fano resonance appears as a purely geometric effect in the conductance, the corresponding energy of quasibound state is obviously influenced by the torsion and length of the nanotube. We also find new plateaus in the conductance. The transport of double-degenerate mode in this geometry is reminiscent of the Zeeman coupling between the magnetic field and spin angular momentum in quasi-one-dimensional structure.  相似文献
