It is shown, with the help of exact diagonalization studies on systems with up to 16 electrons, in the presence of up to two delta function impurities, that the Pfaffian model is not accurate for the actual quasiholes and quasiparticles of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect. Implications for non-Abelian statistics are discussed.  相似文献

By virtue of the two-layer picture of Pfaffian pair Hall state, a qubit representation of topological degeneracy for quasiholes excitation is displayed. The non-Abelian feature of states can be manifested readily by the new wave functions. The virtue of this approach is that one does not need to find the equalities of Pfaffians, which is a so tedious task as exemplified for the case of six quasiholes. Then the braiding matrices are also constructed readily by just permutating single-qubit states, which are unitary and hermite.  相似文献

Entanglement in topological phases of matter has so far been investigated through the perspective of their ground-state wave functions. In contrast, we demonstrate that the excitations of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems also contain information to identify the system's topological order. Entanglement spectrum of the FQH quasihole (QH) excitations is shown to differentiate between the conformal field theory (CFT) sectors, based on the relative position of the QH with respect to the entanglement cut. For Read-Rezayi model states, as well as Coulomb interaction eigenstates, the counting of the QH entanglement levels in the thermodynamic limit matches exactly the CFT counting, and sector changes occur as non-Abelian quasiholes successively cross the entanglement cut.  相似文献

Topological superconductors classified as type D admit zero-energy Majorana fermions inside vortex cores, and consequently the exchange statistics of vortices becomes non-Abelian, giving a promising example of non-Abelian anyons. On the other hand, types C and DIII admit zero-energy Dirac fermions inside vortex cores. It has been long believed that an essential condition for the realization of non-Abelian statistics is non-locality of Dirac fermions made of two Majorana fermions trapped inside two well-separated vortices as in the case of type D. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, however, we show that vortices with local Dirac fermions also obey non-Abelian statistics.  相似文献

We study a system of non-Abelian anyons in the lowest Landau level of a strong magnetic field. Using diagrammatic techniques, we prove that the virial coefficients do not depend on the statistics parameter. This is true for all representations of all non-Abelian groups for the statistics of the particles and relies solely on the fact that the effective statistical interaction is a traceless operator.  相似文献

The Pfaffian state is an attractive candidate for the observed quantized Hall plateau at a Landau-level filling fraction nu=5/2. This is particularly intriguing because this state has unusual topological properties, including quasiparticle excitations with non-Abelian braiding statistics. In order to determine the nature of the nu=5/2 state, one must measure the quasiparticle braiding statistics. Here, we propose an experiment which can simultaneously determine the braiding statistics of quasiparticle excitations and, if they prove to be non-Abelian, produce a topologically protected qubit on which a logical Not operation is performed by quasiparticle braiding. Using the measured excitation gap at nu=5/2, we estimate the error rate to be 10(-30) or lower.  相似文献

We examine the effect of Landau level mixing on the braiding statistics of quasiparticles of Abelian and non-Abelian quantum Hall states. While path dependent geometric phases can perturb the Abelian part of the statistics, we find that the non-Abelian properties remain unchanged to an accuracy that is exponentially small in the distance between quasiparticles.  相似文献

The quantum mechanics and thermodynamics of SU(2) non-Abelian Chern-Simons particles (non-Abelian anyons) in an external magnetic field are addressed. We derive the N-body Hamiltonian in the (anti-) holomorphic gauge when the Hilbert space is projected onto the lowest Landau level of the magnetic field. In the presence of an additional harmonic potential, the N-body spectrum depends linearly on the coupling (statistics) parameter. We calculate the second virial coefficient and find that in the strong magnetic field limit it develops a step-wise behavior as a function of the statistics parameter, in contrast to the linear dependence in the case of Abelian anyons. For small enough values of the statistics parameter we relate the N-body partition functions in the lowest Landau level to these of SU(2) bosons and find that the cluster (and virial) coefficients dependence on the statistics parameter cancels.  相似文献

We present an approach to the computation of the non-abelian statistics of quasiholes in quantum Hall states, such as the Pfaffian state, whose wavefunctions are related to the conformal blocks of minimal model conformal field theories. We use the Coulomb gas construction of these conformal field theories to formulate a plasma analogy for the quantum Hall states. A number of properties of the Pfaffian state follow immediately, including the Berry phases, which demonstrate the quasiholes' fractional charge, the abelian statistics of the two-quasihole state, and equal-time ground state correlation functions. The non-abelian statistics of multi-quasihole states follows from an additional assumption.  相似文献

We introduce an exactly solvable SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 model with exotic spin excitations. With time reversal symmetry (TRS), the ground state is a spin liquid with gapless or gapped spin-1 but fermionic excitations. When TRS is broken, the resulting spin liquid exhibits deconfined vortex excitations which carry spin-1/2 and obey non-Abelian statistics. We show that this SU(2) invariant non-Abelian spin liquid exhibits the spin quantum Hall effect with quantized spin Hall conductivity σ(xy)(s)=?/2π, and that the spin response is effectively described by the SO(3) level-1 Chern-Simons theory at low energy. We further propose that a SU(2) level-2 Chern-Simons theory is the effective field theory describing the topological structure of the non-Abelian SU(2) invariant spin liquid.  相似文献

Semiconducting nanowires in proximity to superconductors are promising experimental systems for Majorana fermions which may ultimately be used as building blocks for topological quantum computers. A serious challenge in the experimental realization of the Majorana fermion in these semiconductor-superconductor-nanowire structures is tuning the semiconductor chemical potential in close proximity to the metallic superconductor. We show that presently realizable structures in experiments with tunable chemical potential lead to Majorana resonances, which are interesting in their own right, but do not manifest non-Abelian statistics. To resolve this crucial barrier to the solid state realization of Majorana fermions, we propose a new topological superconducting array structure where introducing the superconducting proximity effect from adjacent nanowires generates Majorana fermions with non-Abelian statistics.  相似文献

We study the transition from the Abelian multi-component (3, 3, 1) quantum Hall state to the non-Abelian one component Pfaffian state in bilayer two dimensional electron systems. We show that tunneling between layers can induce this transition. At the transition points part of the degrees of freedom that describe the (3, 3, 1) state disappear from the spectrum, and the system is correctly described by the Pfaffian state, with quasi-particles that satisfy non-Abelian statistics. The mechanism described in this work provides for a physical Hamiltonian interpretation of the algebraic projection from the (3, 3, 1) to the Pfaffian state that has been discussed in the literature. We established a large class of exactly soluble spin liquids and chiral spin liquids on three-dimensional helix lattices by introducing Kitaev-type's spin coupling. In the chiral spin liquids, exact stable ground states with spontaneous breaking of the time reversal symmetry are found. The fractionalized loop excitations in both the spin and chiral spin liquids obey non-Abelian statistics. We characterize this kind of statistics by non-Abelian Berry phase and quantum algebra relation. The topological correlation of loops is independent of local order parameter and it measures the intrinsic global quantum entanglement of degenerate ground states.  相似文献

We study the physics of a rapidly rotating gas of ultracold bosonic atoms. In the limit of very rapid rotation of the trap the system exhibits a fractional quantum Hall regime analogous to that of electrons in the fractional quantum Hall effect. We show that the ground state of the system is a 1/2-Laughlin liquid, a highly correlated atomic liquid. Exotic excitations consisting of localized quasiholes of 1/2 of an atom can be created by focusing lasers at the desired positions. We show how to manipulate these quasiholes in order to probe directly their 1/2-statistics.  相似文献

The field-induced antiferromagnetic ordering in systems of weakly coupled S = 1/2 dimers at zero temperature can be described as a Bose-Einstein condensation of triplet quasiparticles (singlet quasiholes) in the ground state. For the case of a Heisenberg bilayer, it is here shown how the above picture is altered in the presence of site dilution of the magnetic lattice. Geometric randomness leads to quantum localization of the quasiparticles or quasiholes and to an extended Bose-glass phase in a realistic disordered model. This localization phenomenon drives the system towards a quantum-disordered phase well before the classical geometric percolation threshold is reached.  相似文献

Excitation spectrum of a half-quantum vortex in a p-wave superconductor contains a zero-energy Majorana fermion. This results in a degeneracy of the ground state of the system of several vortices. From the properties of the solutions to Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in the vortex core we derive the non-Abelian statistics of vortices identical to that for the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) quantum Hall state.  相似文献

We consider a quantum dot in the regime of the quantum Hall effect, particularly in Laughlin states and non-Abelian Read-Rezayi states. We find the location of the Coulomb blockade peaks in the conductance as a function of the area of the dot and the magnetic field. When the magnetic field is fixed and the area of the dot is varied, the peaks are equally spaced for the Laughlin states. In contrast, non-Abelian statistics is reflected in modulations of the spacing which depend on the magnetic field.  相似文献

The spectrum of the integrable spin-S Heisenberg chains is completely characterized in terms of spinons. In the continuum limit they form a quasi-particle basis to the higher level SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models. Enumerating the spinon states in finite systems we obtain effective single particle distribution functions for these objects which generalize Haldane's generalized exclusion principle to quasi-particles with non-Abelian exchange statistics.  相似文献

We study a tunneling geometry defined by a single point-contact constriction that brings to close vicinity two points sitting at the same edge of a quantum Hall liquid, shortening the trip between the otherwise spatially separated points along the normal chiral edge path. This wormhole-like geometry allows for entrapping bulk quasiparticles between the edge path and the tunnel junction, possibly realizing a topologically protected qubit if the quasiparticles have non-Abelian statistics. We show how either noise or simpler voltage measurements along the edge can probe the non-Abelian nature of the trapped quasiparticles.  相似文献
