Experimental observations of diocotron wave echoes on a magnetized electron column are reported, representing Kelvin wave echoes on a rotating near-ideal fluid. The echoes occur by reversal of an inviscid wave damping process, and the phase-space mixing and unmixing are directly imaged. The basic echo characteristics agree with a simple nonlinear ballistic theory. At late times, the echo is degraded, and the maximal observed echo times agree with a theory of electron-electron collisions acting on separately evolving velocity classes.  相似文献

Small transverse magnetic quadrupole fields sharply degrade the confinement of non-neutral plasmas held in Malmberg-Penning traps. For example, a quadrupole magnetic field of only 0.02 G/cm doubles the diffusion rate in a trap with a 100 G axial magnetic field. Larger quadrupole fields noticeably change the shape of the plasma. The transport is greatest at an orbital resonance. These results cast doubt on plans to use magnetic quadrupole neutral atom traps to confine antihydrogen atoms created in double-well positron/antiproton Malmberg-Penning traps.  相似文献

We derive the Joule expansion of an isolated perfect gas from the principles of quantum mechanics. Contrary to most studies of irreversible processes which consider composite systems, the interesting and ignored degrees of freedom are here described by operators acting in the same many-body Hilbert space. Moreover, the expansion of the gas into the entire accessible volume is obtained for pure states. Still, the number particle density is characterized by a chemical potential and a temperature. We discuss the special case of a boson gas below the Bose condensation temperature.  相似文献

In the formation of vortical crystal structures of electrons, the distribution of background electrons works as a “cooler” of randomly moving, intense vortices. In this experimental study the absorption of plasma waves, excited in a dense plasma column, was investigated and the localization of the regions of efficient heating of electrons were determined in a broad range of parameters: 1>ce/>0·1, 0·3<n/n UH <25, 10–5<v/< <10–3. The heating of electrons near the second electron cyclotron harmonic was investigated in greater detail.We are grateful to the members of the Staff of the Institute of Plasma Physics Drs. In the overdense collisionless plasma column inserted through the narrow sides of a rectangular waveguide, the excited electron cyclotron harmonic waves (CHWs) are studied by means of two movable probes and a phase interferometer in the range of parameters of 2 >ω/ω ce >1; 0·5 < (ω pe /ω)2 < 15. Two kinds of CH waves have been found in the dipole mode:
  1. Stable backward CH waves with the phase velocity in the direction from the axis to the periphery.
  2. Unstable backward CH waves with the phase velocity in the opposite direction.
From the correlation measurements and amplitude distribution of the CH waves at the applied frequency and its second harmonic frequency it has been found that in the range of 2 >ω/ω ce > >1·5 efficient nonlinear resonant interaction of CH waves takes place. The position of the loci of resonant interaction inside the plasma column has been found both experimentally and by a simple new graphical procedure for the resonant conditions of the formω 2=2ω 1; k2=2¦k1¦. In absence of this condition, no effective generation of the second harmonic frequency has been found. The resonant interaction of CHWs atω/ω ce =1·85 is the cause of self-trapping of CH waves between the zones of resonant interaction in radial direction and of the anomalous heating rate of electrons.  相似文献

By using RF plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, amorphous carbon films were grown in pure methane plasma. Field emission of the films were examined as a function of substrate temperature. It was found that the emission current from the samples prepared at substrate temperatures higher than 600 °C were considerably improved. According to the results by Raman spectroscopy, growth of graphite crystallites were promoted with high substrate temperatures. Moreover, the surface morphology was abruptly changed at high substrate temperatures over 600 °C. We discuss the field emission characteristics of the amorphous carbon films with regard to the structural features and the surface morphology.  相似文献

In monostatic radar applications it is the signal back to the source that is responsible for target detection. The back-scattering cross-section allows one to calculate the amount of power reflected back in the direction of incidence. In this paper, we develop theoretically and calculate computationally the back-scattering cross-section of a cylindrical column of magnetized plasma with a uniform number density. The effect of the plasma number density and of the collision frequency are investigated.  相似文献

Recent experimental and theoretical works on free electron laser spectral dynamics have pointed out the difficulty to obtain a narrow and stable spectrum operation. This goal can only be achieved by avoiding the sideband generation leading to a broadband and unstable spectrum. Tapered wiggler and two-frequency wiggler are well suited for combining sharp spectrum and high efficiency but are not really compatible with a wide tunability of laser light. Filtering sidebands is a good way for lower power experiments but it seems to be difficult to conceive wideband filters, specially in the far-infrared region. Modulation of electron energy is a new potential soft way for controlling the spectral dynamics of longpulse free electron laser. Spectral dynamics under the modulation is investigated in the linear and non-linear regimes in the far-infrared region. Simulations show that a pulsed and sharp spectrum behavior can be obtained by optimizing the modulation parameters. The interest of such a method for the far-infrared experiments is discussed.  相似文献
