A simple proof for Schur's theorem

In 1917 Schur gave a characterization of bounded analytic functions on the unit disc. We present a simple proof.

     

Peak set without peak points

We give an example of a natural Banach function algebra on the unit disc such that a smaller disc is a peak set for the algebra, but it does not contain any peak point.

     

A recurrence/transience result for circle packings

It is known that any infinite simplicial complex homeomorphic to the plane and satisfying a couple of other conditions is the nerve of a circle packing of either the plane or the disc (and not of both). We prove that such a complex is the nerve of a packing of the plane or the disc according as the simple random walk on its 1-skeleton is recurrent or transient, and discuss some applications. We also prove a criterion for transience of simple random walk on the 1-skeleton of a triangulation of the plane, in terms of average degrees of suitable sets of vertices.

     

Fuchsian Groups, Quasiconformal Groups, and Conical Limit Sets

We construct examples showing that the normalized Lebesgue measure of the conical limit set of a uniformly quasiconformal group acting discontinuously on the disc may take any value between zero and one. This is in contrast to the cases of Fuchsian groups acting on the disc, conformal groups acting discontinuously on the ball in dimension three or higher, uniformly quasiconformal groups acting discontinuously on the ball in dimension three or higher, and discrete groups of biholomorphic mappings acting on the ball in several complex dimensions. In these cases the normalized Lebesgue measure is either zero or one.

     

Aleksandrov surfaces and hyperbolicity

Aleksandrov surfaces are a generalization of two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, and it is known that every open simply-connected Aleksandrov surface is conformally equivalent either to the unit disc (hyperbolic case) or to the plane (parabolic case). We prove a criterion for hyperbolicity of Aleksandrov surfaces which have nice tilings and where negative curvature dominates. We then apply this to generalize a result of Nevanlinna and give a partial answer for his conjecture about line complexes.

     

Hyperbolic convexity and the analytic fixed point function

We answer a question raised by D. Mejía and Ch. Pommerenke by showing that the analytic fixed point function is hyperbolically convex in the unit disc.

     

A family of Kähler-Einstein manifolds and metric rigidity of Grauert tubes

In this paper we explain how the so-called adapted complex structures can be used to associate to each compact real-analytic Riemannian manifold a family of complete Kähler-Einstein metrics and show that already one element of this family uniquely determines the original manifold. The underlying manifolds of these metrics are open disc bundles in the tangent bundle of the original Riemannian manifold.

     

A note on interpolation in the Hardy spaces of the unit disc

In this note we formulate and solve a natural interpolation problem for the Hardy spaces in the unit disc in terms of maximal functions and weighted summable sequences.

     

Radial limits of harmonic functions on the unit disc

This note characterizes those functions on the unit circle that can arise as the radial limit function of a harmonic function on the unit disc.

     

On a conjecture of ridge

The conjecture of Ridge on the numerical range of a shift of periodic weights is resolved in the affirmative, i.e., if the weights are nonzero, the numerical range of the corresponding shift is an open disc centered at the origin. The radius of the disc can be expressed as the Perron root of a nonnegative irreducible symmetric matrix. Some related results are obtained.

     

The Schwarz-Pick Lemma for derivatives

The Schwarz-Pick Lemma states that any analytic function of the unit disc into itself is a contraction with respect to the hyperbolic metric. In this note a related result is proved for the derivative of an analytic function.

     

Discs in complex manifolds with no bounded plurisubharmonic functions

Roughly speaking: In a complex manifold on which all bounded plurisubharmonic functions are constant, the center of a holomorphic disc and its boundary can be prescribed somewhat arbitrarily.

     

The two-by-two spectral Nevanlinna-Pick problem

We give a criterion for the existence of an analytic matrix-valued function on the disc satisfying a finite set of interpolation conditions and having spectral radius bounded by . We also give a realization theorem for analytic functions from the disc to the symmetrised bidisc.

     

Weighted reproducing kernels and Toeplitz operators on harmonic Bergman spaces on the real ball

For the standard weighted Bergman spaces on the complex unit ball, the Berezin transform of a bounded continuous function tends to this function pointwise as the weight parameter tends to infinity. We show that this remains valid also in the context of harmonic Bergman spaces on the real unit ball of any dimension. This generalizes the recent result of C. Liu for the unit disc, as well as the original assertion concerning the holomorphic case. Along the way, we also obtain a formula for the corresponding weighted harmonic Bergman kernels.

     

Extender-based Radin forcing

We define extender sequences, generalizing measure sequences of Radin forcing.

Using the extender sequences, we show how to combine the Gitik-Magidor forcing for adding many Prikry sequences with Radin forcing.

We show that this forcing satisfies a Prikry-like condition, destroys no cardinals, and has a kind of properness.

Depending on the large cardinals we start with, this forcing can blow the power of a cardinal together with changing its cofinality to a prescribed value. It can even blow the power of a cardinal while keeping it regular or measurable.

     

A von Neumann type inequality for certain domains in

Strict contractions on a Hilbert space have a functional calculus with functions that are analytic in the unit disc of the complex plane; an estimate of the norm is then provided by von Neumann's inequality. We consider functions that satisfy related inequalities with respect to multioperators connected to certain domains in ; a representation formula and a Nevanlinna-Pick type theorem are obtained.

     

Extreme eigenvalues of real symmetric Toeplitz matrices

We exploit the even and odd spectrum of real symmetric Toeplitz matrices for the computation of their extreme eigenvalues, which are obtained as the solutions of spectral, or secular, equations. We also present a concise convergence analysis for a method to solve these spectral equations, along with an efficient stopping rule, an error analysis, and extensive numerical results.

     

A model for the homotopy theory of homotopy theory

We describe a category, the objects of which may be viewed as models for homotopy theories. We show that for such models, ``functors between two homotopy theories form a homotopy theory', or more precisely that the category of such models has a well-behaved internal hom-object.

     

Knots of genus one or on the number of alternating knots of given genus

We prove that any non-hyperbolic genus one knot except the trefoil does not have a minimal canonical Seifert surface and that there are only polynomially many in the crossing number positive knots of given genus or given unknotting number.

     

Stability and almost periodicity of asymptotically dominated semigroups of positive operators

We discuss conditions such that strong stability and strong asymptotic compactness of a (discrete or continuous) semiflow defined on a subset in the positive cone of an ordered Banach space is preserved under asymptotic domination. This is used to show that on a Banach lattice with order continuous norm strong stability and almost periodicity of a (discrete or strongly continuous) semigroup of positive operators is preserved under asymptotic domination.
