Single- and double-periodic one-dimensional photonic lattices are formed in lithium niobate using both titanium in-diffusion and holographic grating recording. We investigate linear band structures and diffraction properties of such superlattices and observe a decrease of discrete diffraction with increasing modulation depth of the second superimposed lattice. In weakly modulated superlattices with tailored diffraction properties, our results demonstrate the formation of discrete solitons having a propagation constant inside the extra mini-gap formed inside the Brillouin zone. We report on the fabrication of what we believe is the first example of a two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear photonic crystal [Berger, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 4136 (1998)], where the refractive index is constant but where the 2nd order nonlinear susceptibility is spatially periodic. Such crystals allow for efficient quasi-phase-matched 2nd harmonic generation using multiple reciprocal lattice vectors. External 2nd harmonic conversion efficiencies >60% were measured with picosecond pulses. The fabrication technique is extremely versatile and should allow for the fabrication of a broad range of 2D crystals including quasicrystals.  相似文献

The effect of the formation of spatial gap solitons within one-dimensional optically induced photo-refractive photonic lattices in iron-doped lithium niobate is experimentally investigated. Mutually incoherent Bragg-matched beams with optical powers in the microwatt range from two different He-Ne lasers are used to generate immobile spatial gap solitons within the lattice with a spatial period of 15 μm.  相似文献

推导了光束在Kerr介质、屏蔽介质及光伏介质的一维光子晶格中演化的二能级形式,给出了光束在这三种光折变介质中传播时二能级系统的经典哈密顿形式.以屏蔽介质为例,做出了空间相图,当非线性参数变化时,空间相图的拓扑改变.给出了空间相图的拓扑发生改变时,非线性参数的临界值.数值研究了非线性Landau-Zener(LZ)隧穿,得到非线性参数与LZ隧穿率的关系,发现非线性参数大于0时增强了隧穿,而非线性参数小于0时抑制了隧穿. 关键词: 二能级模型 光折变介质 光子晶格 非线性Landau-Zener隧穿  相似文献

Experimental multielement planar and channel waveguide structures induced by coherent radiation in bulk samples of photorefractive lithium niobate and planar waveguides on their basis including those formed in a projection scheme with scaling of image dimensions are described. The possibility of linear and nonlinear light localization in optically-induced bulk and planar one-dimensional photorefractive photonic superlattices is demonstrated. We study experimentally the interaction of a soliton with a nonlinear lattice. We observe the formation of a novel type of composite soliton created by strong coupling of mutually incoherent periodic and localized beam components. By imposing an initial transverse momentum on the soliton stripe, we observe the effect of lattice compression and deformation.  相似文献

We have studied the optical oscillations and transitions in two-dimensional graded square photonic lattices (GSPL) formed by evanescently coupled optical waveguide arrays with parabolic confinements in all transverse directions. When we retain only the orthogonal couplings, decoupled one-dimensional models can be used to obtain the various normal modes, which correspond to a variety of optical oscillations. Six different combinations of Bloch oscillation (BO), dipole oscillation (DO), and reflections from the boundaries of finite lattice are classified on the phase diagram. If we include the diagonal couplings, transitions among various oscillations are obtained with the Hamiltonian optics approach and confirmed by the field-evolution analysis. We studied in detail a typical example in which a switching occurs from the constituent BO and DO to both DOs in the two orthogonal directions. The method to analyze the complex field evolution in GSPL can be extended to similar systems with different types of lattices and/or confinements.  相似文献

Exceptionally high values of photorefractive gain coefficient of up to 100 cm-1 have been observed in Fe-doped and Fe/Tb-doped crystals of photorefractive lithium niobate. It is believed that these are the highest observed coefficients of any crystalline photorefractive medium. Accurate measurements of gain coefficient have been possible for the first time by using a specially cut triangular crystal which allows the use of short interaction lengths and the complete elimination of surface reflections by having the beams incident at Brewster’s angle. Experimental results are consistent with a simple model of photorefractive beam coupling up until the onset of noise which is observed to deplete the pump for interaction lengths longer than 1 mm. We fabricate two-dimensional elliptic photonic lattices in iron-doped lithium niobate photorefractive crystal for the first time with optical induction method. The experimental setup of our method is very simple and flexible without complicated optical adjustment system. We analyze and verify the two-dimensional elliptic photonic lattices by plane wave guiding, far field diffraction pattern imaging, and Brillouin-zone spectroscopy. Induced elliptic photonic lattices can stably exist for a long time in the iron-doped lithium niobate crystal. The induced two-dimensional elliptic photonic lattices might offer an easy method to study generic band gap phenomena in anisotropic periodic structures.  相似文献

We report systematic results of collisions between discrete spatiotemporal optical solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices. We show that the outcomes of collisions strongly depend on the initial soliton parameters, such as their input amplitudes (energies) and their transverse velocities. Four generic outcomes are identified in the study of collisions between discrete light bullets located in the corner, at the edge, and in the center of the photonic lattice: (a) merger of both low and high amplitude solitons into a single one, at small values of the kick parameter (soliton transverse velocity), (b) spreading of low amplitude solitons at intermediate values of the kick parameter, (c) bouncing of high amplitude solitons at intermediate values of the kick parameter, which is accompanied by a sharp modification of input soliton transverse velocities, and (d) quasi-elastic (symmetric) interactions of both low and high amplitude solitons at large values of the kick parameter.  相似文献

Compensation for the nonlinear diffraction of narrow laser beams with wavelengths of 532 and 633nm and the formation of photonic waveguides and waveguide circuits due to the contribution of pyroelectric effect to the nonlinear response of lithium niobate crystal have been experimentally demonstrated. Complete compensation for the linear and nonlinear diffraction broadening of light beams is obtained upon uniform heating of an undoped sample from room temperature to 55?C.  相似文献

We investigate the group velocity of light in a one-dimensional volume grating inside lithium niobate crystals doped with different impurities. The superluminal and slowdown light propagations are both observed in the crystals. 空间频率模式的光子带隙反映了光波在周期性结构中的线性传输特性.以这种线性传输特性为基础,研究了蜂巢光子晶格中光波的无衍射和反常折射.通过详细分析带隙结构第一通带上的衍射与折射特性,得出了光波发生反常衍射和折射的入射条件.匹配不同的入射条件,数值模拟了光波的无衍射传输和反常折射现象.结果表明:将入射光束的波矢设置在蜂巢晶格布里渊区中正常、反常衍射区的交界处,可使高斯光束沿x轴、y轴方向的衍射得到有效抑制;以多光束干涉场作为入射光场,可对蜂巢晶格进行模式匹配,激发第二布里渊区的传输模式;进一步将模式匹配后入射光场的波矢设置在反常折射区,可实现光波的反常折射.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of edges and corners on the Anderson localization of light in disordered two-dimensional photonic lattices that are optically induced in nonlinear saturable photorefractive media. A systematic quantitative study of gradual transition from corner to bulk Anderson localization in truncated two-dimensional photonic lattices was carried out. We analyzed numerically the localization at several corners and edges of the square and triangular photonic lattices and compared them with the localization in bulk medium. We found that, for strong disorder, corners and edges effectively suppress Anderson localization, as compared to the bulk, but to a varying degree.  相似文献

Table grapes were irradiated with UV nanosecond laser pulses in searching for resonant photo-elicitation of trans-resveratrol, a known antioxidant compound naturally produced by grapevines and other plants. To this end, the irradiation time as well as the wavelength dependence of the induced trans-resveratrol content was investigated by comparing the elicitation level of this compound at two laser wavelengths. One wavelength was selected right at the maximum of the absorption band (302.1 nm, the resonant wavelength for this compound) while the second was selected (300 nm, a non-resonant wavelength) such that trans-resveratrol absorption is negligible. It was found that the resonant irradiation enhances the resveratrol content in grapes by up to six times more than that of non-resonant irradiation, the rest of the conditions being the same. This work demonstrates how selective laser excitation of fruits can open new possibilities for the development of functional foods with enhanced nutritional and beneficial properties. We study experimentally two-dimensional periodic photonic lattices optically imprinted in photorefractive nonlinear media, and explore the effect of anisotropy on the induced refractive-index patterns. The orientation anisotropy is demonstrated by comparing square and diamond lattices, while the polarization anisotropy is shown to distinguish ordinarily and extraordinarily polarized light. In particular, the extraordinarily polarized lattice induces much stronger refractive-index modulation for the same conditions. Finally, we exploit the photorefractive anisotropy to generate a quasi-one-dimensional refractive-index pattern for the observation of two-dimensional solitons and corroborate these experiments by numerical simulations. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally a novel type of localized beam supported by the combined effects of total internal and Bragg reflection in nonlinear two-dimensional square periodic structures. Such localized states exhibit strong anisotropy in their mobility properties, being highly mobile in one direction and trapped in the other, making them promising candidates for optical routing in nonlinear lattices.  相似文献
