On the number of conjugacy classes of zeros of characters and the length of solvable groups

Abstract

We apply an orbit theorem to a few questions about character degrees. We investigate the relation of the number of conjugacy classes where characters vanish and the length of the solvable groups. As another application, we give a bound for the size of defect groups of blocks of solvable groups.

Groups with few conjugacy classes of non-normal subgroups

The structure of groups with finitely many non-normal subgroups is well known. In this paper, groups are investigated with finitely many conjugacy classes of non-normal subgroups with a given property. In particular, it is proved that a locally soluble group with finitely many non-trivial conjugacy classes of non-abelian subgroups has finite commutator subgroup. This result generalizes a theorem by Romalis and Sesekin on groups in which every non-abelian subgroup is normal.      

Bounds on the largest Kronecker and induced multiplicities of finite groups

We give new bounds and asymptotic estimates on the largest Kronecker and induced multiplicities of finite groups. The results apply to large simple groups of Lie type and other groups with few conjugacy classes.     

On the number of conjugacy classes of finite nilpotent groups

We establish the first super-logarithmic lower bound for the number of conjugacy classes of a finite nilpotent group. In particular, we obtain that for any constant c there are only finitely many finite p-groups of order pm with at most c⋅m conjugacy classes. This answers a question of L. Pyber.

Conjugacy classes in finite permutation groups via homomorphic images

The lifting of results from factor groups to the full group is a standard technique for solvable groups. This paper shows how to utilize this approach in the case of non-solvable normal subgroups to compute the conjugacy classes of a finite group.

     

The Class Number of Derived Subgroups and the Structure of Camina Groups

A finite group G is called a Camina group if G has a proper normal subgroup N such that gN is precisely a conjugacy class of G for any g ∈E G - N. In this paper, the structure of a Camina group G is determined when N is a union of 2, 3 or 4 conjugacy classes of G.
