Morphology development during isothermal crystallization in equal molecular weight isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and atactic polypropylene (aPP) blends was studied with time‐resolved simultaneous small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering methods with synchrotron radiation. The final long period obtained after crystallization at 115 °C was nearly independent of blend composition up to 50 wt % aPP but showed an increase in the 80 wt % aPP blend. At a high crystallization temperature (137.5 °C), the increase in the final long period with aPP content was significant, and the evolution of iPP crystallinity was also affected. However, at low crystallization temperatures, the additive decrease of the crystallinity and the constant melting point with increasing aPP content suggest that the crystallizability and crystal morphology of iPP is not a strong function of aPP. The iPP/aPP blends showed a strong low‐angle SAXS upturn as a function of composition, which suggests the segregation of aPP on size scales larger than the lamellar spacing. A detailed analysis of the SAXS patterns indicates that aPP disrupts the ordering within the lamellar stacking. The results are generally consistent with predominantly interfibrillar incorporation of the aPP diluent within the microstructure, with only modest interlamellar incorporation dependent on the crystallization temperature. The findings can be attributed to the partial miscibility/mixing of the aPP and iPP components in the blend before crystallization, depending on the crystallization undercooling. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Structure and morphology development during the isothermal crystallization and subsequent melting of syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP) was studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), time‐resolved simultaneous small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) methods with synchrotron radiation. The morphology of sPP isothermally crystallized at 100 °C for 3 h was also characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Time‐ and temperature‐dependent parameters such as the long period (L), crystal lamellar thickness (lc), amorphous layer thickness (la), scattering invariant (Q), crystallinity (Xc), lateral crystal sizes (L200 and L010), and unit cell dimensions (a and b) were extracted from the SAXS and WAXD data. Results indicate that the decreases in L and lc with time are probably due to the formation of thinner crystal lamellae, and the decreases in a and b are due to crystal perfection. The changes in the morphological parameters (Q, Xc, L, and lc) during subsequent melting exhibited a two‐stage process that was consistent with the multiple melting peaks observed in DSC. The two high‐temperature peaks can be attributed to the melting of primary lamellae (at lower temperatures) and recrystallized lamellae (at higher temperatures). An additional minor peak, located at the lowest temperature, was also visible and was related to the melting of thin and defective secondary lamellae. TEM results are consistent with the SAXS data, which supports the assignment of the larger value (l1) from the correlation function analysis as lc. WAXD showed that the thermal expansion was greater along the b axis than the a axis during melting. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 2982–2995, 2001  相似文献

Modulated temperature techniques allow to separate the reversing and non‐reversing contributions of material transitions. To investigate reversible crystallization and melting of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) at microstructural level, in this research, modulated temperature Fourier transform infrared (MTFTIR) and quasi‐isothermal FTIR (QIFTIR) analyses are used. By following the intensity variation of iPP regularity bands, associated with 31 helix structures of different lengths (n repeating units), MTFTIR evidences that, independently from helix length, a reversing coil–helix transition takes place few degrees below the non‐reversing crystallization onset. By comparing spectroscopic and differential scanning calorimetry experiments performed in quasi‐isothermal conditions, the reversing transition was found to be associated with the reversible melting‐crystallization phenomenon. Moreover, QIFTIR evidences that helices of different lengths contribute differently to the reversible transition: the helices composed of n = 10 and n = 12 are active into all the explored temperature range (30–130 °C) whereas the shortest (n = 6) and the longest (n > 15) helices contribute to reversibility at T > 100 °C. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Several composites of a metallocene syndiotactic polypropylene with an organophilic silicate have been prepared and analyzed to investigate the effects of the nanoparticles on the crystallization of syndiotactic polypropylene. Moreover, the influence of an electron‐irradiation dose of 166 kGy on the different materials has been studied. Although the melting temperatures are practically unchanged, irradiation leads to a considerably slower crystallization rate of the syndiotactic polypropylene homopolymer in such a way that an important cold crystallization has been observed in the second melting along with a much higher value of the isothermal crystallization half‐time. On the contrary, the nanocomposites are much less sensitive to irradiation because only a small shift of the crystallization temperature has been observed, and the isothermal crystallization half‐time remains practically unaffected. However, irradiation leads to important changes in the low‐angle region of X‐ray diffractograms. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 1068–1076, 2007  相似文献

We investigated the crystalline morphology of isotactic polypropylene obtained by melt crystallization under carbon dioxide (CO2) at various pressures. Spherulites consisting of regularly arranged fibrils without subsidiary lamellae were obtained by crystallization under CO2 below 2 MPa, whereas large spherulites consisting of irregularly arranged fibrils with subsidiary lamellae were obtained under ambient pressure. Distorted domain crystals with uniform optical anisotropy consisting of α‐form were found to be obtained under CO2 above 2 MPa, and needle crystals consisting of γ‐form were obtained above 12 MPa. Transmission electron micrographs showed that straight and thick lamellae are regularly arranged in both the distorted domain crystals and the needle crystals. The uniformly thick lamellae were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry thermograms; that is, the melting temperature is higher and the melting peak is sharper than those obtained under ambient pressure. Such characteristic crystalline morphologies obtained under CO2 may be attributed to local ordering in the melt state. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dynamically cured polypropylene (PP)/epoxy blends compatibilized with maleic anhydride grafted PP were prepared by the curing of an epoxy resin during melt mixing with molten PP. The morphology and crystallization behavior of dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends were studied with scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy. Dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends, with the structure of epoxy particles finely dispersed in the PP matrix, were obtained, and the average diameter of the particles slightly increased with increasing epoxy resin content. In a study of the nonisothermal crystallization of PP and PP/epoxy blends, crystallization parameter analysis showed that epoxy particles could act as effective nucleating agents, accelerating the crystallization of the PP component in the PP/epoxy blends. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of PP and dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends were described by the Avrami equation. The results showed that the Avrami exponent of PP in the blends was higher than that of PP, and the crystallization rate was faster than that of PP. However, the crystallization rate decreased when the epoxy resin content was greater than 20 wt %. The crystallization thermodynamics of PP and dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends were studied according to the Hoffman theory. The chain folding energy for PP crystallization in dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends decreased with increasing epoxy resin content, and the minimum of the chain folding energy was observed at a 20 wt % epoxy resin content. The size of the PP spherulites in the blends was obviously smaller than that of PP. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 1181–1191, 2004  相似文献

The influence of low contents of a liquid crystalline polymer on the crystallization and melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was investigated using electron and optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. In pure iPP, the α modification was found, whereas for iPP/Vectra blends at Vectra concentration <5%, both α and β forms were observed. The amount of β phase varied from 0.23 to 0.16. Optical microscopy showed that Vectra was able to nucleate both α and β forms. Non-isothermal crystallization produces a material with a strong tendency for recrystallization of the α and β forms (αα′ and ββ′ recrystallization) leading to double endotherms for both crystalline forms in DSC thermograms. Melting thermograms after isothermal crystallization at low temperatures showed a similar behavior. At values of Tc > 119 °C for the α form and Tc > 125 °C for the β form, only one melting endotherm was observed because enough perfect crystals, not susceptible to recrystallization, were obtained. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Time-resolved synchrotron wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments were used to investigate crystallization behavior and microstructure development of a nearly monodisperse poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO] (Mw = 53,500), and its melt-miscible blends with two fractionated styrene - hydroxystyrene random copolymers [SHS]. PEO crystallization rates decrease significantly in the presence of the melt-miscible SHS copolymers. All low and high molecular weight SHS blends exhibit a crystallization process at relatively short times characterized by large Avrami exponents (n), followed by a dominant process with n near that of neat PEO. A model for the crystallization of these blends is proposed.  相似文献

The strain recovery of three syndiotactic polypropylenes (s‐PPs) differing in the percentage of [rrrr] pentad is investigated. A suitable method based on loading–unloading tests at constant displacement rate in tensile loading conditions is adopted to measure the residual and recovered strain components of the applied strain. The method allows to obtain a large amount of data from few tests and to explore a wide strain range. The dependence of the material's strain recovery on the applied strain is analyzed in relation to s‐PP strain‐induced microstructural changes and crystalline form transitions, which are reported in literature. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The macromorphology of isotactic/atactic (iPP/aPP) and isotactic/syndiotactic (iPP/sPP) polypropylene mixtures is examined by optical microscopy. The spherulitic macrostructure of equimolecular weight [weight‐average molecular weight (Mw) = 200k] iPP/aPP blends is volume‐filling to very high aPP concentrations when the crystallization temperature is 130 °C. Similar spherulitic macrostructures (spherulite size and volume‐filling nature) are observed for iPP homopolymer and a 50/50 iPP/aPP blend at low crystallization temperatures (115–135 °C). At higher crystallization temperatures (140–145 °C), a equimolecular weight (Mw = 200k) 50/50 iPP/aPP blend exhibits nodular texture that blurs the spherulitic boundaries. Double temperature jump experiments show that the nodular texture is due to melt phase separation that develops prior to crystallization. The upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of a 50/50 iPP/aPP blend (Mw = 200k) lies below 155 °C, and the blend is miscible at conventional melt processing temperatures. The UCST behavior is controlled by the blend molecular weight and aPP microstructure. aPP microstructures containing increased isospecific sequencing (although still noncrystalline) exhibit a reduced tendency for phase separation in 50/50 mixtures (Mw = 200k) and the absence of nodular texture at low undercoolings (140–145 °C). Equimolecular weight (Mw = 200k) 50/50 iPP/sPP mixtures exhibit phase‐separated texture at all crystallization temperatures. The size scale of the phase‐separated texture decreases with decreasing crystallization temperature because of a competition between crystallization and phase separation from a melt initially well mixed from the initial solution blending process. Extended melt annealing experiments show that the 50/50 iPP/sPP mixture (Mw = 200k) is immiscible in the melt at conventional melt processing temperatures. The iPP/sPP pair shows a much stronger tendency for phase separation than the iPP/aPP polymer pair. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 1947–1964, 2000  相似文献

The thermal behavior of melt‐mixed polypropylene (PP)/poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) blends was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, and it was quantitatively related to the morphology observed through scanning electron microscopy. The PP/PCL blends were immiscible in the whole composition range; however, some interesting phenomena were found. Blends with low PP contents crystallized in a fractionated fashion. By applying a self‐nucleation procedure, we demonstrated that this occurred because of a lack of highly active heterogeneities within the confined PP domains. On the other hand, PP acted as a nucleating agent for PCL, and when the PP content was reduced, the higher surface/volume ratio increased its nucleating activity. The nucleating effect was improved when the PP was self‐nucleated because of the better nucleating effect of PP annealed crystals. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We investigated the crystallization growth of isotactic polypropylene under carbon dioxide (CO2) at various CO2 pressures and temperatures by in situ observation with a digital high‐fidelity microscope and a specially designed high‐pressure visualized cell. The fibrils within the spherulite were distorted and branched by crystallization under CO2 at pressures higher than 2 MPa, and this suggested the exclusion of CO2 from the growth front of the fibrils. The spherulite growth rate (G) at 140 °C increased with the CO2 pressure, attained a maximum value around 0.3 MPa, and then decreased. Above 6 MPa, it became slower than that under air at the ambient pressure. An analysis of the crystallization kinetics by the Hoffman–Lauritzen theory revealed that the pressure dependence of G could be ascribed to the change in the transportation rate of crystallizable molecules (βg) with pressure; that is, βg increased and then decreased with pressure. The increase in βg at a low pressure was caused by the plasticizing effect of CO2, whereas the decrease in βg at a high pressure was due to the exclusion of CO2 from the crystal growth front. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(propylene) (PP) and poly(propylene)/organic‐montmorillonite (PP/Mont) nanocomposite were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with various cooling rates. The Avrami analysis modified by previous research was used to describe the nonisothermal crystallization process of PP and PP/Mont nanocomposite very well. The values of half‐time and Zc showed that the crystallization rate increased with increasing cooling rates for both PP and PP/Mont nanocomposite, but the crystallization rate of PP/Mont nanocomposite was faster than that of PP at a given cooling rate. The activation energies were estimated by the Kissinger method, and the values were 189.4 and 155.7 kJ/mol for PP and PP/Mont nanocomposite, respectively. PP/Mont nanocomposite could be easily fabricated as original PP, although the addition of organomontmorillonite might accelerate the overall nonisothermal crystallization process. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The quiescent crystallization of several polypropylenes (PPs) was examined using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM). The half‐times of crystallization were obtained from the DSC thermographs employing the Avrami/Nakamura equation to fit and predict crystallization kinetics under isothermal and nonisothermal conditions. The induction times under nonisothermal conditions were estimated from isothermal crystallization data and used in conjunction with the Nakamura model in order to capture the crystallization behavior of the studied PPs. The Avrami/Nakamura model is found to fit and predict the nonisothermal crystallization data of the various PPs well over a range of cooling rates supporting its use in the simulation of polymer processes of industrial relevance. POM was used in line with parallel plate rheometry (Anton Paar, MCR 502) under no flow conditions to study the shape and growth rate of crystals of various PP resins at different temperatures or cooling rates. The growth rate of crystals is impeded exponentially with increase of temperature. The various PP resins of different molecular architecture have shown different nucleation and growth rate characteristics behavior under similar processing conditions. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structure–property relationships of isotactic polypropylene (iPP)/styrenic block copolymer blends filled with talc were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and tensile‐ and impact strength measurements. The composites were analyzed as a function of the poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐propylene) diblock copolymer (SEP) and the poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene‐b‐styrene) triblock copolymer (SBS) content in the range from 0 to 20 vol % as elastomeric components and with 12 vol % of aminosilane surface‐treated talc as a filler. Talc crystals incorporated in the iPP matrix accommodated mostly plane‐parallel to the surface of the samples and strongly affected the crystallization process of the iPP matrix. The SBS block copolymer disoriented plane‐parallel talc crystals more significantly than the SEP block copolymer. The mechanical properties depended on the final phase morphology of the investigated iPP blends and composites and supermolecular structure of the iPP matrix because of the interactivity between their components. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One of the most important claims for the plasma technique as a surface treatment is that it modifies only a few atomic layers of materials. However, with polymers, this assumption must be carefully verified to keep the bulk mechanical properties constant. Besides the oxidation of the film, with specific plasma conditions such as high power and duration, the polypropylene film structure is also modified in the bulk through vacuum ultraviolet absorption and thermal relaxation. This change is associated with smectic- and amorphous-phase transformation into an α-monoclinic phase, with a rapid rate for the smectic transformation and a slower rate for the amorphous transformation. At the same time, the crystallite size increases, and the polypropylene film texture is planar and moderated (1.7 mrd at the maximum of the distribution, with a discharge power of 100 W and a treatment duration of 10 min). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization and phase morphology of the injection‐molded isotactic polypropylene (iPP)/syndiotactic polypylenen (sPP) blends were studied, focusing on the difference between the skin layer and core layer. The distribution of crystallinity of PPs in the blends calculated based upon the DSC results shows an adverse situation when compared with that in the neat polymer samples. For 50/50 wt % iPP/sPP blend, the SEM results indicated that a dispersed structure in the skin layer and a cocontinuous structure in the core layer were observed. A migration phenomenon that the sPP component with lower crystallization temperature and viscosity move to the core layer, whereas the iPP component with higher crystallization temperature and viscosity move to the skin layer, occurred in the iPP/sPP blend during injection molding process. The phenomenon of low viscosity content migrate to the low shear zone may be due to the crystallization‐induced demixing based upon the significant difference of crystallization temperature in the sPP and iPP. This migration caused the composition inhomogeneity in the blend and influenced the accuracy of crystallinity calculated based upon the initial composition. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miscibility of polylactic acid (PLA) and atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends is investigated as a function of composition. The blends quenched from the melt show the presence of a single glass transition temperature dependent on the composition. The equilibrium melting temperature is determined using the Hoffman‐Weeks method and a depression is observed with increasing content of the PMMA component. The PLA spherulite growth rate and the overall isothermal crystallization rates decrease with increasing the amount of the amorphous component. The increase of the long period value as a function of the PMMA content in the blend is due to the segregation of PMMA component in the amorphous PLA interlamellar regions. The Lauritzen‐Hoffman secondary nucleation theory analysis shows that the segregation of the PMMA in the interlamellar region induces an increase in the surface entropy of folding. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
