Photo-orientational phenomena have been studied for two comb-shaped cholesteric copolyacrylates containing azobenzene side groups. CopolymerI contains nematogenic phenyl benzoate groups and photosensitive chiral menthyl-containing azobenzene side groups. CopolymerII is composed of nematogenic phenyl benzoate groups, photosensitive cyanoazobenzene groups and chiral photochromic benzylidene-p-methan-3-one fragments. Under the action of polarized Ar+ laser light (488 nm), orientation of the side groups of the copolymers takes place, and this orientation is perpendicular to the vector of the electric field of the incident light. This process shows a co-operative character; that is, it involves both photosensitive azobenzene and phenyl benzoate groups. The kinetics of growth of the photoinduced orientational order parameter were studied as a function of film thickness, incident light intensity, and preliminary UV irradiation. For the planar oriented films of the copolymers, irradiation with polarized light leads to the development of photoinduced birefringence Δn; maximum values of Δn reach 0.01. The photo-optical properties of copolymersI and II are compared. Such materials may be used for 'dual' data recording by varying the helix pitch, selective light reflection maximum, and photoinduced birefringence or linear dichroism.  相似文献

A series of crosslinked, ammonium‐functionalized, and partially fluorinated copolymers have been prepared and evaluated as anion exchange membranes. In order to investigate the effect of crosslinking on the membrane properties, precursor copolymers containing chloromethyl groups were crosslinked with various aliphatic diamines followed by quaternization with monoamines. Crosslinking was effective in lowering water absorbability at no expense of high hydroxide ion conductivity of the membranes. By tuning the degree of crosslinking (20 mol %) and crosslinker chain length (C6 and C8), the highest ion conductivity of 73 mS/cm (at 80°C in water) was achieved. Furthermore, alkaline stability of the membranes was also improved by the crosslinking; the remaining ion conductivity after the stability test (in 1 M potassium hydroxide at 80°C) was 8.2 mS/cm (after 1000 h) for the C6 crosslinked membrane and 1 mS/cm (after 500 h) for the uncrosslinked membrane, respectively. The ammonium groups attached with the crosslinkers seemed more alkaline stable than the uncrosslinked benzyltrimethylammonium groups, while the polymer main chain was intact under the harsh alkaline conditions. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel crosslinkable fluorinated oligoimides were prepared in two steps. The first involved the synthesis of oligoimides terminated with nadic or allylic double bonds, and the second step was materialized either by a radical addition of mercaptotrialkoxysilane derivatives onto nadic double bonds or a hydrosilylation reaction of hydrogenotrialkoxysilane derivative onto allylic double bonds. Three kinds of crosslinking of the trialkoxysilane end groups were studied. The first kind entailed a thermal self‐crosslinking of trialkoxysilane groups. The second process of crosslinking incorporated a bicomponent system—the crosslinked agent was 1,1,1‐tris(4‐hydroxyphenyl)ethane (TRIOH). The trialkoxysilane groups reacted with the hydroxyl–phenol groups of TRIOH to give thermally stable phenoxysilane bonds as well as a crosslinking network. The last method was also a bicomponent system; the oxalic acid was added into an oligoimide solution where by thermal treatment water was created. The water molecules hydrolyzed the trialkoxysilane groups into silanol groups that polycondensed into a crosslinked network following a sol–gel process. The mechanism of the different crosslinking reactions was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and solid‐state 29Si NMR. The self‐crosslinked material prepared from precursor α,ω‐trimethoxysilyl fluorinated oligomer (Mn = 5500 g · mol?1) exhibited a 10 wt % loss temperature under air higher than 420 °C and a low birefringence (Δn = 0.008) at 1.300 μm. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The purpose of this article is to study the fast structural changes that take place during the deformation and heat setting of uniaxially preoriented poly(ethylene 2,6‐naphthalate) films. For this purpose, an online birefringence measurement system coupled with a heat‐setting oven was used. In the online birefringence system, whose details were reported previously (H. Venkatesvaran and M. Cakmak, SPE ANTEC Tech Pap 1993, 39, 257; H. Venkatesvaran and M. Cakmak, Polym Eng Sci 2001, 41, 341), a green and red laser is passed through the films being annealed in a heat‐setting chamber; the resulting data are analyzed for the details of structural mechanisms that take place during this process. This technique is shown to be capable of detecting reversals in birefringence development; as a result, complex sequences of structural evolution can be tracked. The design of this system allows one to observe not only the increase or decrease in birefringence during the course of the heat‐setting process but also the rate dependencies on processing variables. In this study, we establish that the rate of structural rearrangement, as detected by birefringence, depends strongly on the state of the pre‐existing chain orientation and the level of crystallinity. Increased levels of preorientation in the films results in decreases in the rate of birefringence change during heat setting. This is primarily attributed to the increased levels of steric hindrance developed with the increase in orientation and crystallinity in the preoriented samples. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We performed the crosslinking of vinyl‐terminated biphenyl and naphthalene side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers using peroxide‐type initiators with and without the addition of tertiary amine promoters. The crosslinking temperatures were chosen in the range of mesophase stability to allow the mesophase order to be frozen. The biphenyl derivatives, with a high isotropization temperature, were crosslinked to a large extent. This led to anisotropic thermosets. To crosslink naphthalene derivatives, amine promoters were needed, but degrees of crosslinking were lower, and anisotropic elastomers were obtained. Crosslinking processes were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The nature of the frozen mesophase was confirmed by X‐ray diffraction studies on mechanically oriented samples. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An azo prepolymer (TAZ) was synthesized by reaction between Disperse Orange‐3 (DO3) and diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Selected amounts of TAZ were blended with DGEBA and cured with an aliphatic diamine, either meta‐xilylenediamine (MXDA) or polyetheramines (Jeffamine D series). The photoinduced anisotropy and optical storage properties in two series of crosslinked epoxy‐based azo polymers with different architectures and chromophore contents (from 3 to 24 in weight) have been investigated. Measurements of the birefringence (Δn) induced with linearly polarized 488 nm light show that the Δn values increases with DO3 weight fraction. Networks with the same chromophore concentration but different backbones exhibit similar levels of induced anisotropy under the same irradiation conditions. The remaining birefringence and relaxation times are influenced by the molecular weight between crosslinks of networks. Higher is reflected in shorter relaxation times and lower remaining birefringence. In terms of the level of induced dichroism measured on relaxed films, it was found an agreement with the remaining anisotropy. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new methacrylate containing a 2,6‐diacylaminopyridine (DAP) group was synthesized and polymerized via RAFT polymerization to prepare homopolymethacrylates (PDAP) and diblock copolymers combined with a poly(methyl methacrylate) block (PMMA‐b‐PDAP). These polymers can be easily complexed with azobenzene chromophores having thymine (tAZO) or carboxylic groups with a dendritic structure (dAZO), which can form either three or two hydrogen bonds with the DAP groups, respectively. The supramolecular polymers were characterized by spectroscopic techniques, optical microscopy, TGA, and DSC. The supramolecular polymers and block copolymers with dAZO exhibited mesomorphic properties meanwhile with tAZO are amorphous materials. The response of the supramolecular polymers to irradiation with linearly polarized light was also investigated founding that stable optical anisotropy can be photoinduced in all the materials although higher values of birefringence and dichroism were obtained in polymers containing the dendrimeric chromophore dAZO. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work, colloidal spheres composed of azo polymers with different chromophore loading densities were prepared, and their photoinduced deformation behavior was studied. The colloids were constructed by using a series of amphiphilic epoxy-based random copolymers containing 4-carboxylazobenzene functional groups with different degrees of functionalization (DFs). The colloidal spheres were fabricated through gradual hydrophobic aggregation of the polymeric chains in tetrahydrofuran-H2O dispersion media, which was induced by gradually adding water into the systems. The colloidal spheres were characterized by using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The photoinduced deformation behavior was studied by irradiating the colloidal spheres with a linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam. Results showed that the critical water content (CWC) for the colloid formation is related to the DF of the polymers, and CWC increases with the increase of DF. The hydrodynamic diameter of the colloidal spheres is also related to the DF of the polymers. When the DF of the polymers increases, the average size of the colloids gradually decreases. The hydrodynamic diameter of the colloidal spheres increases as the water dropping rate decreases. When the dropping rate is below 20 microL/s, the size of the colloidal spheres increases abruptly as the dropping rate further decreases. Upon the linearly polarized Ar+ laser beam irradiation, the colloids composed of polymers with different DFs can all be elongated along the polarization direction of the laser beam. As DF increases, the deformation degree characterized by the axial ratio (l/d) almost linearly increases. These observations can give some insight into the photoinduced deformation mechanism and can be used to construct colloids with different sizes and photoresponsive ability.  相似文献

N‐substituted maleimides polymerize in the presence of a radical initiator to give polymers with excellent thermal stabilities and transparency. In this study, we synthesized various maleimide copolymers with styrenes and acrylic monomers to control their thermal and mechanical properties by the introduction of bulky substituents and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Three‐component copolymers of N‐(2‐ethylhexyl)maleimide in combination with styrene, α‐methylstyrene (MSt), or 1‐methylenebenzocyclopentane (BC5) as the styrene derivatives, and n‐butyl acrylate, 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate, 4‐hydroxybutyl acrylate, or acrylic acid as the acrylic monomers were prepared by radical copolymerization. These copolymers were revealed to exhibit excellent heat resistance by thermogravimetric analysis. Glass transition temperatures increased by the introduction of bulky MSt and BC5 repeating units. The mechanical properties of the copolymer films were improved by the introduction of intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Optical properties, such as transmittance, refractive index, Abbe number, and birefringence, were determined for the copolymers. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Three kinds of photoresponsive polymethacrylates containing different bisazo chromophores were prepared with atom transfer radical polymerization and characterized with proton nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, and ultraviolet–visible spectra. These polymers had similar molecular weights, molecular weight distributions, glass‐transition temperatures, and absorption coefficients. The irradiation of these polymer films with a linearly polarized laser could induce birefringence because of the reorientation of the bisazo chromophores through trans–cis–trans isomerization cycles of double azo bonds, and the corresponding mechanism was also examined. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Low molecular weight polymers and copolymers of butadiene were grafted with styrene. The graft products were then crosslinked by using dicumyl peroxide as initiator. The optimum peroxide concentration was established (5 phr). Infrared analysis showed that the reactivity of 1,2-vinyl and that of 1,4-trans double bonds in styrene-grafted polybutadiene is similar. Crosslinking of the graft product seems to involve a radical-chain polymerization of double bonds in the polymer. The reaction rate is proportional to the square root of peroxide concentration and to the concentration of polymer double bonds. Activation energy, reaction heat, reaction order, and crosslinking efficiency were also determined from DSC measurements. No relation was found between the activation energy of crosslinking and the molecular weight of backbone polymer or density of grafting. Crosslinking efficiency was to 25–50 crosslinks per molecule of decomposed peroxide. The crosslinking efficiency for grafted butadiene–styrene copolymers is somewhat lower than that for grafted polybutadienes. From thermogravimetric measurements it was found that the crosslinked grafted polymers show lower resistance to thermal degradation than ungrafted polymers.  相似文献

Statistical and amphiphilic block copolymers bearing cinnamoyl groups were prepared by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The UV‐induced [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of polymer bound cinnamic acid groups was studied in polymer thin films as well as in block copolymer micelles. In both cases, exposure to UV‐light for 10 min led to a crosslinking conversion of about 60%, as determined by FT‐IR spectroscopy and UV–vis absorption measurements. Time based IR‐spectroscopy revealed a maximum conversion of 78% reached after an irradiation time of about 16 min. For micelles obtained from polymers bearing 5 mol % or more cinnamoyl groups, the crosslinking reaction proceeded smoothly, yielding in crosslinked particles which were stable in a non‐selective solvent (CHCl3). Diameters determined by dynamic light scattering in the selective solvent (MeOH) were similar for both, non‐crosslinked and crosslinked micelles, whereas diameters of crosslinked micelles in the non‐selective solvent (CHCl3) were significantly larger compared to MeOH samples. This strategy of direct self assembly of block‐copolymers in a selective solvent followed by “clean” crosslinking, without the need for additional crosslinking reagents or crosslinking initiators, provides a straight forward approach toward ROMP‐based polymeric nano‐particles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The molecular orientation of an aromatic polycarbonate containing fluorene side chains was investigated by polarized infrared spectroscopy and birefringence analyses. The copolymers were synthesized from 2,2‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)propane (BPA), 9,9‐bis(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methylpheny)fluorene (BMPF), and phosgene by interfacial polycondensation. The 1449‐cm?1 band of the uniaxially oriented films, stretched at the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) plus 5 °C, was assigned to various combinations of CC stretching and CH in‐plane bending vibrations in the fluorene ring, and the transition moment angle was estimated to be 90°. The intrinsic birefringence of aromatic polycarbonate films with BMPF molar ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1 was obtained with the 1449‐cm?1 band. The copolymer was estimated to show zero intrinsic birefringence at the BMPF molar ratio of 0.75, and the BMPF homopolymer showed negative intrinsic birefringence. A linear relationship between the volume fraction of BMPF units and the intrinsic birefringence indicated that the two monomer units of BPA and BMPF in each copolymer were not independent, and an intrinsic birefringence could be defined even in the copolymer. The sign of the photoelastic coefficient in the homopolymer with BMPF units was positive. The different signs of the photoelastic coefficient and the intrinsic birefringence suggest that the fluorene side‐chain orientation induced by stress in the glass state is quite different from the orientation of the uniaxially oriented films stretched at Tg + 5 °C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Holographic gratings were formed in thick polymer films containing azobenzene and diphenylacetylene (tolane) moieties in the Bragg regime. Amorphous polymers containing various contents of the azobenzene moiety with photosensitivity and the tolane moiety with large birefringence in the side chain were synthesized, and optically transparent thick polymer films were prepared. The films were irradiated with a linearly polarized beam from an Ar+ laser (488 nm), and the transmittance of a He-Ne laser beam (633 nm) through a pair of crossed polarizers, with the film between them, was measured to estimate a photoinduced birefringence (deltan). The value of deltan increased with an increase in the tolane moiety content in the polymer films. When two linearly polarized beams at 488 nm were interfered in the film, a diffraction beam was observed, and the maximum diffraction efficiency (eta) increased with the tolane moiety content. In the film containing 70 mol% of the tolane moiety, the highest eta of 99% was achieved, and angular selectivity due to Bragg diffraction was clearly observed. We consider the cooperative molecular motion of the tolane moieties to be induced by the photoinduced change in alignment of the azobenzene moieties even if the polymers show no liquid-crystalline phase. When two orthogonal circularly polarized beams were allowed to interfere in the film, a Bragg-type polarization grating was formed. It was found that the value of eta reached 90% within 920 ms.  相似文献

Photoinduced birefringence is investigated in a new amorphous copolymer containing azobenzene groups. Thelevels of birefringence signal are found to depend on the polarization angle between the pump beam and the probe beam, andon the ellipticity of the pump beam. Both the growth and decay processes of the birefringence signal can be described byknown biexponential equations. The rate constants and the amplitudes associated with the growth process of thephotoinduced birefringence are observed to display a linear dependence with the pump beam intensity. A new dynamicmodel of the photoinduced birefringence is presented taking into account the contributions of both the trans and cis isomersof azobenzene groups and the local polymer segments. The numerical treatment of this model shows good agreement with theexperimental data in the whole writing-erasing processes of the photoinduced birefringence conducted in our polymersamples.  相似文献

Amphiphilic core–shell nanostructures containing 19F stable isotopic labels located regioselectively within the core domain were prepared by a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), supramolecular assembly, and condensation‐based crosslinking. Homopolymers and diblock copolymers containing 4‐fluorostyrene and methyl acrylate were prepared by ATRP, hydrolyzed, assembled into micelles, and converted into shell‐crosslinked nanoparticles (SCKs) by covalent stabilization of the acrylic acid residues in the shell. The ATRP‐based polymerizations, producing the homopolymers and diblock copolymers, were initiated by (1‐bromoethyl)benzene in the presence of CuBr metal and employed N,N,N,N,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the coordinating ligand for controlled polymerizations at 75–90 °C for 1–3 h. Number‐average molecular weights ranged from 2000 to 60,000 Da, and molecular weight distributions, generally less than 1.1 and 1.2, were achieved for the homopolymers and diblock copolymers, respectively. Methyl acrylate conversions as high as 70% were possible, without observable chain–chain coupling reactions or molecular weight distribution broadening, when bromoalkyl‐terminated poly(4‐fluorostyrene) was used as the macroinitiator. Poly(4‐fluorostyrene), incorporated as the second segment in the diblock copolymer synthesis, was initiated from a bromoalkyl‐terminated poly(methyl acrylate) macroinitiator. After hydrolysis of the poly(methyl acrylate) block segments, micelles were formed from the resulting amphiphilic block copolymers in aqueous solutions and were then stabilized by covalent intramicellar crosslinking throughout the poly(acrylic acid) shells to yield SCKs. The SCK nanostructures on solid substrates were visualized by atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Dynamic light scattering was used to probe the effects of crosslinking on the resulting hydrodynamic diameters of nanoparticles in aqueous and buffered solutions. The presence of fluorine atoms in the diblock copolymers and resulting SCK nanostructures allowed for characterization by 19F NMR in addition to 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and IR spectroscopy. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Low Tg copolymers of [11(N‐carbazolyl)undecylmethacrylate] and [2,5‐dimethylphenyl‐[(4‐nitrophenyl)azo]‐phenoxyalkylmethacrylate] have been synthesized and the polarized light‐induced birefringence of thick films (70 μm) has been investigated at a constant deducted temperature relative to Tg (T Tg = 10 °C). The optical properties of these copolymers have been studied in relation to the azo‐dye content and the length of the alkyl spacer between the azo‐dye and the methacrylic backbone. They have been compared with the dispersion of (4‐methoxy‐2,5‐dimethylphenyl)‐(4‐nitrophenyl)diazene (DMNPAA) within a poly[11(N‐carbazolyl)undecyl‐methacrylate] and a poly[N‐vinylcarbazole] (PVK) matrix. The experimental curves have been fitted by biexponentials, so emphasizing the effects of the copolymer structure on the kinetics of the writing process. The photoinduced orientation is more than three orders of magnitude higher in a grafted material compared to the dispersion version. The azo‐dye concentration also has an important role in both the amplitude and the dynamics of the photo‐orientation. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Three series of amorphous copolymers containing azobenzene groups with various substituents and certain amounts of crosslinkable acrylic groups were prepared. The cross-linked polymer films were obtained by thermal polymerization of the acrylic groups in the copolymers, during which, by controlling the time of cross-linking reaction, the films can be made with different cross-linking degree (from 0 to 32%, which was monitored by FT-IR spectra measurement). Photo-induced alignment process of the films was performed under irradiation with linearly polarized light at 442 nm, and the effect of cross-linking degree on the photo-induced alignment rate was investigated. The dynamics of the photo-induced alignment was analyzed with biexponential curve fitting. The photo-induced alignment rate and the maximum transmittance of the films decreased because of the cross-linking. Furthermore, for the cross-linked samples, it was found that their saturated value of transmittances keep constant after repeated "writing" and "erasing" cycles. The findings reveal that the cross-linking of the film can effectively restrain the phototactic mass transport of azopolymer during irradiation by polarized light. The relationship between the cross-linking degree and the photo-induced alignment behavior of azopolymer is discussed in detail.  相似文献

Photo‐chemically tunable photonic band gap materials are prepared by infiltration of liquid crystal polymers having azobenzene groups into voids of SiO2 inverse opal films. Linearly polarized (LP) light irradiation results in transformation from a random to an anisotropic molecular orientation of azobenzene side chains in the voids of the SiO2 inverse opal film, leading to the reversible and stable shift of the reflection peak to longer wavelength more than 15 nm. To improve switching properties, we use copolymers of azobenzene monomer and tolane monomer, which have higher birefringence, as infiltration materials into the voids. The azobenzene‐tolane copolymers are found to show higher birefringence than azobenzene homopolymers by the LP light irradiation at higher temperature. Consequently, the reflection band of the SiO2 inverse opal film infiltrated with the azobenzene‐tolane copolymer can be shifted to longer wavelength region more than 55 nm by the irradiation of LP light. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
