The following system of nomenclature for the transitions and relaxations in polycarbonate has been proposed: α = Tg = 150, β = 70, γ = ?100, and δ = ?220°C (frequency range of 10–50 Hz). The three component peaks of the γ relaxation are denoted by γ1, γ2, and γ3 relaxations correspond to phenylene, coupled phenylene-carbonate, and carbonate motions, respectively. Dynamic mechanical analysis of poly(bisphenol-A carbonate) using the DuPont 981–990 DMA system shows that the magnitude of the β relaxation depends upon the thermal history of the polycarbonate; annealing greatly reduces the intensity of the β relaxation. A relaxation map constructed for the β relaxation gives an activation energy of 46 kcal/mol. Exposure of polycarbonate to methylene chloride vapor for various times shows that after an induction period of about 5 min the intensity of the γ3 relaxation at ?78°C decreases whereas the intensity of the γ1 relaxation of ?30°C is unaffected and the ratio E″(γ1)/E″(γ3) increases linearly with the square root of time. This has been ascribed to the interaction of methylene chloride on the carbonate group in polycarbonate. Thermal crystallization of polycarbonate does not affect the positions of the γ relaxation and the glass transition peaks, but merely reduces their intensity. The glass transition peak intensity falls off sharply in comparison to the γ relaxation intensity. Both the γ3 and γ1 peaks in polycarbonate have been observed simultaneously for the first time by dynamic mechanical analysis. Impact strength measurements show that methylene chloride treatment of polycarbonate results in a change in mode of failure from ductile to brittle with a resultant 40-fold reduction in impact energy for fracture. Thermally crystallized polycarbonate exhibits brittle fracture with very low force and energy at break.  相似文献

The relative permittivity, loss, and breakdown strength are reported for a commercial sample of bisphenol A‐polycarbonate (comm‐BPA‐PC) and a purified sample of the same polymer (rp‐BPA‐PC) as well as for two new polycarbonates having low molecular cross‐sectional areas, namely a copolymer of tetraaryl polycarbonate and BPA‐PC (TABPA‐BPA‐PC) and a triaryl polycarbonate homopolymer (TriBPA‐PC). The glass transition temperatures of the new polymers are higher than the Tg of BPA‐PC (187 and 191 °C vs. 148 °C). Relative permittivity and loss measurements were carried out from 10 to 105 Hz over a wide temperature range, and results for the α‐ and γ‐relaxation regions are discussed in detail. For the α‐relaxation, the isochronal peak position, Tα, scales approximately with Tg. On the other hand, the peak temperature for the γ‐relaxation is approximately constant, independent of Tg. Also, in contrast to what is observed for α, γ exhibits a strong increase in peak height as temperature/frequency increases and a significant difference is found between Arrhenius plots determined from isochronal and isothermal data analyses. Next, the γ‐relaxation region for comm‐BPA‐PC and associated activation parameters show strong history/purity effects. The activation parameters also depend on the method of data analysis. The results shed light on discrepancies that exist in the literature for BPA‐PC. The shapes of the γ loss peaks and hence glassy‐state motions for all the polymers are very similar. However, the intensities of the TriBPA‐PC and TABPA‐BPA‐PC γ peaks are reduced by an amount that closely matches the reduced volume fraction of carbonate units in the two new polymers. Finally, for comm‐BPA‐PC, the breakdown strength is strongly affected by sample history and this is assumed to be related to volatile components in the material. It is found that the breakdown strengths for TriBPA‐PC and TABPA‐BPA‐PC are relatively close to that for rp‐BPA‐PC with the value for TriBPA‐PC being slightly larger than that for rp‐BPA‐PC or the value usually reported for typical capacitor grade polycarbonate. Finally, it is shown that the real part of the relative permittivity remains relatively constant from low temperatures to Tg. Consequently, based on the dielectric properties, TriBPA‐PC and TABPA‐BPA‐PC should be usable in capacitors to at least 50 °C higher than BPA‐PC. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABA-type block copolymers of poly(trimethylene carbonate) with poly(ethylene glycol) (Mn 6820), PTMC-b-PEG-b-PTMC, were synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization of 1,3-dioxan-2-one (trimethylene carbonate) in the presence of poly-(ethylene glycol) with stannous octoate catalyst, and the copolymers with various compositions were obtained. The PTMC-b-PEG-b-PTMC copolymers were characterized with Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. The intrinsic viscosities of resulting copolymers increased with the increase of 1,3-dioxan-2-one content in feed while the molar ratio of monomer over catalyst kept constant. It has been observed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PTMC segments in copolymers, recorded from differential scanning calorimetry, was dependent on the composition of copolymers. The melting temperature (Tm) of PEG blocks in copolymer was lower than that of PEG polymer, and then disappeared as the length of PTMC blocks increased. The results of dynamic contact angle measurement clearly revealed that the hydrophilicity of resulting copolymers increased greatly with the increase of PEG content in copolymers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The mechanical and dielectric relaxation of a set of aromatic-aliphatic polyamides containing ether linkages have been examined as a function of temperature (−140 to 190°C) and frequency (3 to 106 Hz). The polymers differ in the orientation (meta and para) of the aromatic rings, in the length of the aliphatic chain, and in the number of ether linkages per repeating unit. Dynamic mechanical experiments showed three main relaxation peaks related to the glass transition temperature of the polymers (α relaxation), the subglass relaxations associated to the absorbed water molecules (β) and to the motion of the aliphatic moieties (γ). Dielectric experiments showed two subglass relaxation processes (β and γ) that correlates with the mechanical β and γ relaxations, and a conduction process (σ) above 50°C that masks the relaxation associated to the glass transition. A molecular interpretation is attempted to explain the position and intensity of the relaxation, studying the influence of the proportion of para- or meta- oriented phenylene rings, the presence of ether linkages and the length of the aliphatic chain. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. An extensive mechanical spectroscopy study in the low‐frequency range is proposed to evidence and characterize the effect of a deformation below the glass transition temperature (Tg) on the mobility in an amorphous bisphenol‐A polycarbonate. The mechanical treatment induces the appearance of a peak more than 100 K below Tα, which presents the characteristics of a relaxation associated to an unstable nature. This phenomenon is related to the creation of shear‐induced high‐mobility zones. The characteristics of these zones appear to be independent of the deformation level applied to the system. The use of a specific procedure allows the determination of the values of the apparent activation energy of the mechanism. The apparent activation energy increases continuously from the values of the β‐relaxation to the main α‐relaxation ones. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. AB‐type block copolymers with poly(trimethylene carbonate) [poly(TMC); A] and poly(ethylene oxide) [PEO; B; number‐average molecular weight (Mn) = 5000] blocks [poly(TMC)‐b‐PEO] were synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) in the presence of monohydroxy PEO with stannous octoate as a catalyst. Mn of the resulting copolymers increased with increasing TMC content in the feed at a constant molar ratio of the monomer to the catalyst (monomer/catalyst = 125). The thermal properties of the AB diblock copolymers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. The melting temperature of the PEO blocks was lower than that of the homopolymer, and the crystallinity of the PEO block decreased as the length of the poly(TMC) blocks increased. The glass‐transition temperature of the poly(TMC) blocks was dependent on the diblock copolymer composition upon first heating. The static contact angle decreased sharply with increasing PEO content in the diblock copolymers. Compared with poly(TMC), poly(TMC)‐b‐PEO had a higher Young's modulus and lower elongation at break. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 43: 4819–4827, 2005  相似文献

Despite the industrial significance of poly(bisphenol A carbonate), there is a scarcity of open literature on the equilibrium of the melt‐phase process. In fact, the equilibrium constant (Keq) for this reaction has never been measured directly. This article describes a process on the basis of NMR for the measurement of Keq for the reaction between bisphenol A and diphenyl carbonate in the presence and absence of a catalyst. The apparent enthalpy and entropy were calculated using a van't Hoff plot. Decomposition of bisphenol A is a common side reaction in the melt‐phase reaction performed at high temperatures in the presence of catalyst. The effect of these side reactions on the Keq in the presence of catalyst is determined. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 171–178, 2002  相似文献

Second-order, nonlinear optical polymers based on epoxy-substituted methylvinylisocyanates and N-substituted maleimides were synthesized and characterized with spectral and thermal analysis. The photocrosslinking and thermal-crosslinking reactions of copolymers with different chromophore contents were studied. Thermally induced crosslinking during the poling process, performed at the glass-transition temperature (Tg), was prevented by Tg being decreased through the addition of a plasticizer. Electrooptic coefficients (r33), measured for crosslinked and noncrosslinked systems, had similar absolute values and relaxation dynamics. This behavior was explained in terms of the similar rotational mobility of the chromophore units and the paucity of crosslinking sites. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polystyrene radically polymerized in atmosphere of air is composed of bisegment (C-A) or trisegment (C-A-C) block copolymers consisting of styrene segment (A) and styrene peroxide segment (C). Dielectric measurements of a system of copolymers of styrene and oxygen were obtained above the glass temperature. Three primary relaxations, a, b, and c, in order of descending temperature, were found corresponding to three microphases: styrene phase (phase a), styrene peroxide phase (phase c), and an intermediate phase (phase b) which contains a low concentration of peroxide bonds. An alternating copolymer of styrene and oxygen exhibits the relaxation c alone. With heat treatment above the glass temperature, relaxation c and subsequently relaxation b vanish with thermal degradation of peroxide bonds. The sum of relaxation strengths is linearly related to the content of peroxide bonds which was evaluated by the elementary analysis and DTA. Below the glass temperature, the temperature dependence of dielectric loss of carefully purified polystyrene without peroxide bonds shows very weak peaks which correspond to γ (200°K at 10 kHz) and δ (50°K at 10 kHz) peaks, respectively, in the activation plot. When low molecular degradation products of peroxide bonds are occluded or impurities such as benzaldehyde are added into the specimen, the height of the γ peak is appreciably enhanced, indicating that the reorientation of small polar molecules in polystyrene accompanies the vibration of the phenyl group about the C? C6H5 bond which gives rise to the γ relaxation.  相似文献

Disulfide‐centered star‐shaped poly(ε‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐l ‐lysine)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers (i.e., A2B4 type Cy‐PZlys‐b‐PEO) were synthesized by the combination of ring‐opening polymerization and thiol‐yne chemistry. Their molecular structures and physical properties were characterized in detail by FTIR, 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, and polarized optical microscope. Despite mainly exhibiting an α‐helix conformation, the inner PZlys blocks within copolymers greatly prohibited the crystallinity of the outer PEO blocks and presented a liquid crystal phase transition behavior in solid state. These block copolymers Cy‐PZlys‐b‐PEO self‐assembled into nearly spherical micelles in aqueous solution, which had a hydrophobic disulfide‐centered PZlys core surrounded by a hydrophilic PEO corona. As monitored by means of DLS and TEM, these micelles were progressively reduced to smaller micelles in 10 mM 1,4‐dithiothreitol at 37 °C and finally became ones with a half size, demonstrating a reduction‐sensitivity. Despite a good drug‐loading property, the DOX‐loaded micelles of Cy‐PZlys‐b‐PEO exhibited a reduction‐triggered drug release profile with an improved burst‐release behavior compared with the linear counterpart. Importantly, this work provides a versatile strategy for the synthesis of the disulfide‐centered star‐shaped polypeptide block copolymers potential for intracellular glutathione‐triggered drug delivery systems. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of crosslinked siloxane/poly(ethylene glycol) (Si–PEG) copolymers were synthesized from the reactive methoxy‐functional silicone resin (Si resin) and PEGs with different molecular weights via two kinds of crosslinking reactions during an in situ curing stage. One of the crosslinking reactions is the self‐condensation between two methoxy groups in the Si resin, and another one is an alkoxy‐exchange reaction between the methoxy group in the Si resin and the OH group in PEG. The synthesized crosslinked copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, DSC, and 13C NMR. The crosslinked copolymers were stable in a moisture‐free environment, but the Si? O? C linkages were hydrolyzed in humid conditions. The gel‐like solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) were prepared by impregnating these crosslinked Si–PEG copolymers in a propylene carbonate (LiClO4/PC) solution. The highest conductivity reached 2.4 × 10?4 S cm?1 at 25 °C and increased to 8.7 × 10?4 S cm?1 at 85 °C. The conductivities of these gel‐type SPEs were affected by the content of LiClO4/PC, the molecular weights of PEGs, and the weight fraction of the Si resin. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene‐substituted benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene donor units (TTBDT) serve as novel promising building blocks for donor–acceptor (D‐A) copolymers in organic photovoltaic cells. In this study, a new D‐A type copolymer (PTTBDT‐TPD) consisting of TTBDT and thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione (TPD) is synthesized by Stille coupling polymerization. A PTTBDT‐TPD analog consisting of TTBDT and alkylthienyl‐substituted BDT (PTBDT‐TPD) is also synthesized to compare the optical, electrochemical, morphological, and photovoltaic properties of the polymers. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices are fabricated using the polymers as p‐type donors and [6,6]‐phenyl C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the n‐type acceptor. The power conversion efficiencies of the devices fabricated using PTTBDT‐TPD and PTBDT‐TPD are 6.03 and 5.44%, respectively. The difference in efficiency is attributed to the broad UV–visible absorption and high crystallinity of PTTBDT‐TPD. The replacement of the alkylthienyl moiety with thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene on BDT can yield broad UV–visible absorption due to extended π‐conjugation, and enhanced molecular ordering and orientation for organic photovoltaic cells. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Conjugated copolymers based on benzodithiophene (BDT) derivatives and thiophene‐quinoxaline‐thiophene (TQT) segments represent an efficient class of light harvesting materials for organic photovoltaic (OPV) applications. Commonly, BDT‐TQT copolymers are synthesized by Stille cross‐coupling polymerization. In this study, alkoxy and thienyl functionalized alternating BDT‐alt‐TQT copolymers are synthesized by direct arylation polymerization (DArP), using Ozawa conditions. An extensive optimization of the reaction conditions such as the catalytic system, solvent, temperature, base, and the concentration of the catalyst is accomplished. The optical and electrochemical properties of the copolymers obtained by DArP are compared to the reference polymers synthesized by Stille cross‐coupling polymerization. Finally, the optimized BDT‐alt‐TQT copolymers are incorporated into organic solar cells as electron donors. The solar cells of the DArP copolymers exhibit power conversion efficiencies up to 80% (rel.) of their Stille cross coupling analogues. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. The transesterification of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate (HFIPA) homopolymers and block copolymers with methyl acrylate (MA) or n-butyl acrylate (n-BuA) were investigated for the efficient synthesis of p-type and n-type organic semiconductor acrylates. HFIPA, MA, and n-BuA are readily prepared in a one-pot synthesis by Cu(0) reversible deactivation radical polymerization in high yield with low dispersity to give poly(HFIPA)100, PMA100-b-poly(HFIPA)x, and PnBuA100-b-poly(HFIPA)x (x = 100, 50,25). The transesterification of poly(HFIPA)100 was also studied using 19F NMR spectroscopy. Based on this method, a series of eight homopolymers and three copolymers based on semiconductor motifs commonly found in organic light-emitting diodes, organic thin-film transistors, and organic photovoltaics were synthesized with narrow dispersity and conversions up to 99%. These experiments demonstrate that poly(HFIPA) can provide a useful building block in the synthesis of organic electronic materials, providing a simpler route to complex materials which may be challenging to access directly via controlled radical polymerization. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Amphiphilic block and statistical copolymers of vinyl ethers (VEs) with pendant glucose residues were synthesized by the living cationic polymerization of isobutyl VE (IBVE) and a VE carrying 1,2:5,6‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐D ‐glucose (IpGlcVE), followed by deprotection. The block copolymer was prepared by a two‐stage sequential block copolymerization, whereas the statistical copolymer was obtained by the copolymerization of a mixture of the two monomers. The monomer reactivity ratios estimated with the statistical copolymerization were r1 (IBVE) = 1.65 and r2 (IpGlcVE) = 1.15. The obtained statistical copolymers were nearly uniform with the comonomer composition along the main chain. Both the block and statistical copolymers had narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight ∼ 1.1). Gel permeation chromatography, static light scattering, and spin–lattice relaxation time measurements in a selective solvent revealed that the block copolymer formed multimolecular micelles, possibly with a hydrophobic poly(IBVE) core and a glucose‐carrying poly(VE) shell, whereas the statistical copolymer with nearly the same molecular weight and segment composition was molecularly dispersed in solution. The surface properties of the solvent‐cast films of the block and statistical copolymer were also investigated with the contact‐angle measurement. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Perfectly‐alternating linear (AB)n multiblock copolymers consist of n AB block pairs covalently linked in an alternating sequence. Although these copolymers can microphase‐order in the same fashion as their lower‐order (n = 1) diblock analogs, the 2(n ? 1) biconformational midblocks comprising each copolymer molecule have a considerable impact on microstructural characteristics and bulk properties. We have applied transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and extensional rheometry to examine and compare the morphologies and properties of two series of compositionally symmetric (lamellar) poly(styrene‐b‐isoprene)n (SI)n (1 ≤ n ≤ 4) multiblock copolymers. In one series, chain length was held constant allowing block mass (Mb) to decrease with increasing n. In the second copolymer series, Mb remained relatively invariant. Increasing n in these two series generally promoted reductions in both the lamellar period and upper (styrenic) glass‐transition temperature, but noticeable increases in tensile modulus and yield strength. These observed trends are more pronounced in the copolymer series with constant chain length due to the coupled relationship between n and Mb. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel donor–acceptor ( D–A ) copolymer comprising of weak electron donating BDT moiety and strong 9‐(2‐octyldodecyl)?8H‐pyrrolo[3,4‐b] bisthieno[2,3‐f:3',2'‐h] quinoxaline‐8,10(9H)‐dione (PTQD) unit denoted as P(PTQD‐BDT) was synthesized as donor material for polymer solar cells. P(PTQD‐BDT) shows a broad visible‐near‐infrared absorption band with an optical bandgap of 1.74 eV and possesses a relatively low‐lying HOMO level at ?5.28 eV. Bulk‐heterojunction polymer solar cell with the optimized blend of 1:2 (weight ratio) P(PTQD‐BDT):PC71BM (processed with chloroform) shows an open circuit voltage of 0.92 V, a short circuit current density of 7.84 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 0.50, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.61%. The PCE has been further improved to 5.55 % (Jsc = 10.34 mA/cm2, Voc = 0.88V and FF = 0.61), when 3% v ol 1,8‐diio‐dooctane (DIO) was used as solvent additive for the processing of P(PTQD‐BDT):PC71BM blended film. The enhancement in Jsc is as a result of the appropriate morphology and efficient exciton dissociation into free charge carrier. The increase in PCE has been attributed to the favorable nanoscale morphology for efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport (reduction in the electron to hole mobility ratio). © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three arylene difluoride monomers containing phosphine oxide ( 1 ), phosphinic acid ( 2 ), or phosphinate ester ( 3 ) groups were prepared and polymerized with bisphenol A to give novel poly-(arylene ether)s ( 4 , 5 , and 6 ). The polymers obtained had moderate molecular weights (ηinh: 0.14–0.30 dL g−1 in N-methylpyrrolidinone) and glass-transition temperatures (Tg: 102–200 °C), depending on the phosphine group in the main chain. Using bis(4-fluorophenyl)sulfone as a comonomer improved the polymerization to give copolymers with higher solution viscosities. The stoichiometric investigation revealed that 7 mol % excess of fluoride monomer gave the highest molecular weight copolymer 8 with ηinh of 0.78 dL g−1, which had a Tg of 176 °C, a T of 432 °C, and formed a hard film by casting from solution. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Six alternating conjugated copolymers ( PL1 – PL6 ) of benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) and thiophene, containing electron‐withdrawing oxadiazole (OXD), ester, or alkyl as side chains, were synthesized by Stille coupling reaction. The structures of the polymers were confirmed, and their thermal, optical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties were investigated. The introduction of conjugated electron‐withdrawing OXD or formate ester side chain benefits to decrease the bandgaps of the polymers and improve the photovoltaic performance due to the low steric hindrance of BDT. Bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells (PSCs) were fabricated based on the blend of the as‐synthesized polymers and the fullerene derivative [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) in a 1:2 weight ratio. In this article, pendent thiophene (2‐butyl‐5‐octylthiophene) side chain is used to modify the backbone of the polymers containing benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene (BDT) and thieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione (TPD). Compared with the dodecyloxy side‐chained polymer (P1), pendent thiophene‐based polymers (P2 and P3) show similar number‐average molecular weight (Mn), polydispersity index, thermal stability (Td ~ 334–337 °C), and optical band gaps ( ) (~1.8 eV). Polymer (P2)‐based BDT with pendent thiophene and ethylhexyl‐modified TPD shows relatively low‐lying HOMO energy level (?5.52 eV) and nearly 1 V high open circuit voltage (VOC).
